Some weired problem with Installation

Hello Everyone, I recently purchased a PC and installed knoppix 3.2 on it. But I ran in to a strange problem with it. <problemDescription> After installing GNU/Linux for the first time with xfs filesystem. suddenly after few days I recieved an error from INIT which said getty not found and got stuck at that. Suspecting a damaged file system I ran xfs_recover on the root partition. After recovery the OS worked fine for few days but only to run in to the same problem again. This time also I repaired the filesystem and OS worked fine. But the problem kept coming back. Hence after a while I reinstalled GNU/Linux with ReiserFS. With this the OS worked fine for another 15 days, but after 15 days it crashed bad this time it was saying INIT panick exception violation at (some hex address) waiting for 30 sec and I got the same message after every 30 second. suspecting a bad HDD I ran badblocks command on it to find and fix any badblocks present. But none were found. And recovery was also not feasible this time Hence now I have reinstalled GNU/Linux with ext3 filesyste. IT's working fine so far(I ve not passed that evil 15th day yet). Hope I won't run in to the same problem again. </problemDescription> I was told that there are some issues regarding xfs filesystem in knoppix hence I took the decision of reinstall for the first time. On both the occasions system was shutdown properly. And syslog did not report any abnormilities. Can any one shed some light on this. Thanks in Advance Shashank

Runaway ESR

Wonder if any one of you came across this @ Slashdot. It's about ESR adding his own jargon descriptions to the well-known jargon file he maintains. SCO evidence

Seems that SCO has given evidence to analysts at the Aberdeen Group; some 80 lines of it. More details here: http://eet.com/sys/news/OEG20030606S0039 As of now, I think SCO's making a mountain out of a mole-hill. But then here is one concern presented in the article: <i>If SCO (Lindon, Utah) prevails in its legal efforts, many observers believe the action could, at best, result in hundreds of multimillion-dollar licensing payments from Fortune 1000 companies and, at worst, damage the foundation of open-source software.</i> Well, I knew OSS was based on wrong principles--kind of a leg-in-leg, but this will certainly raise questions on the immunity of Free Software from such claims. By the looks of things, you may also want to use a rescue disc, and check your lilo for the correct root device, or other lilo options. Since its asking you to enter directly to shell, that looks like single-user mode. If you have upgraded the kernel, try booting back to the last working kernel, or the original kernel. If this fails as well, means you prolly have to check the lilo options. Its very unlikely for a filesystem to die off.

Its a wonderful thought, and I was personally greatly disappointed when it didn't kick off last time. However, the PRC is just as it was, and I have not deleted anything from the site..the passwords, usernames, etc are still present. If we can do anything to get it going, that'll be great. A good way to start would be to... o prepare a list of the people intereseted on the mailing lists in india who are ready to mentor proejects. o List down the projects that can be given out. a few options might be... -contributions on indlinux (what say karunakar??) -some development on libyahoo on which mr philip tellis has been working... - gknowledge (dr. nag, can we have some modules on which some students can work??) - etc etc (ooh! this is a nice project '-) ) Lets take this all over India this time and try to get more and more people(both students and mentors) on this. Who else can do the work of spreading the word better than FN :). FN, can we have the word spread to all the mailing lists in the country. I m posting this on the mumbai and pune GLUGs. Goa and Bealgaum GLUGs are the one i know of, you ofcourse would know of many more such destinations where you can have this mail. It would also be great if you can have the PRC mentioned in the next issue of LFY(if thats not too much of a trouble.) I think we will have to conduct a few more workshops around us if the idea has to be spread to the majour colleges. I will try and push to have one workshop organised some time in july in South maharashtra(would be either in RIT, Sangli or DY Patil COE, Kolhapur (bhaskar, u getting this??) ). [ILUG-BOM] Help needed to convert VB application on open source - commercial

we have an application with front-end as VB6 on win98/nt/2k. reporting tool used is Crystal report 8.5. back-end can be rdbms connected thru odbc. aaa. we have replaced rdbms to win-Mysql under windows environment with minor modifications but crystal-report is not supporting mysql (under win2k environment) any help / guidance on report-generation tool on mysql under windows environment will be appreciated. bbb. next, we intent to migrate / convert the application on linux, mysql / postgresql with browser-front-end using perl/php. any help for conversion or trainging on commercial basis is appreciable.
