kernel compilation

Hi Friends, Yesterday I compiled(recompiled) the kernel for linux 2.4.2-2 (RHL7.1 default). The steps what I followed are like this... (I'm telling you steps just to check whether I procced in proper way or not.) 1. cd /usr/src/linux2.4.2-2 [this is the dir where the kernel is stored.] 2. make xconfig 3. make dep [ what happens if we change step 3 & 4 ] 4. make clean [i.e. first step 4 & then 3 ] 5. make bzImage [ can we change this name to something like newkernel 6. make modules 7. make modules_install [Do I need to make & install modules before making bzImage?] 8. cp bzImage /boot/bzImage 9. lilo configration. What additional steps I required if I want to install kernel from new source i.e. eigther from cdrom or from another drive? How can I create new dir called linux2.4.x ( for that respective kernel.) The compilation come up with 2 errors. They are, Now my modem is not accessable to me even with root. whenever I try to connect to the internel with kppp it gives the message, "Sorry, can't open modem". Secondly, whenever I boot into linux it gives the following message, "mounting local file system: mount: fs type is not supported by kernel. [ Failed ] " Same message appears for remote file system. In this case remote file system is my windows partitions. Due to this, during shut down I get the message, stoppin automount [ Failed ] What are the changes I need to do to avoid this? For email, we have tied up with a service provider named station12 who is based in netherlands. An email is created through any email client, goes to my linux box, to hathway cable to station12 to inmarsat which locates in which occean my ship is travelling and sends it to their sat C terminal. What is 64-bit computing?

Hi, The question may seem trivial but I have a significant confusion in my mind becoz of the conflicting things I read. We were tought that the microprocessor architecture is denoted as the "NUMBER OF DATA LINES"-bit architecture. For example --- becoz 8085 has 8 data lines it is 8 bit, 8086 has 16 so it is 16 bit etc. WHY THEN PENTIUM IS CALLED 32 BIT ARCHITECTURE EVEN IF IT HAS 64 DATA LINES?? Also Intel is tomtomming about their new 64-bit Itenium architecture. What is it that makes Itenium 64 bit?? Now for the software side. What is that that makes a FILE SYSTEM 32bits/64bits?? Problem in booting disklessnode (LTSP)

Hi all, Please guide me to solve out this networking problem. I have installed Mandrake Linux in my PIII 733 256MB Ram machine which is having RTL 8029 Ethernet card. I have also installed NFS,Appache,DHCP servers. My challenge is to boot a diskless node using LTSP (Linux terminal server project). I have gone through the doucments LTSP (ltsp.org), downloaded and installed the respective Kernal, Core and SVGA rpms in my server.The dhcpd.conf and host.allow file also configured. Also I had downloaded the Ethernet image file for rtl 8139 card and made an ethernet image floppy for booting the node. While booting the node with ethernet image floppy, the MAC address of the card is is displying properly and finally it is giving a message that searching DHCP server and start searching and login Window is not appearing on the screen. The cables and connections are perfect from server to node through a hub. (I had tried another 486 machine using Xdenu and Telnet was working fine with the same cabling) If any body had configured the disklessnode using LTSP, please help me to sort out the problem Regards, Vinod Bhaskar ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through : http://mail.sify.com

I am giving a talk in the ACM Seminar today evening at 6:30pm, NCST Juhu. Web Engineering with Zee Object Publishing Environment (ZOPE) ZOPE is a feature rich web application server written in Python (a powerful object oriented programming language). It is object oriented with built-in support for XML, search, password authentication, security, user management, and supports the protocols like http, ftp, WebDav, XML-RPC. It can use data from various sources like file systems, ZODB, RDBMS, and LDAP. The lecture will cover introduction, installation, demonstration of most of the features of ZOPE and a few of the ZOPE Products used for the creation and maintenance of dynamic web sites. During the talk the suitability of ZOPE for developing e-education applications will be discussed. Nagarjuna

Hi, I think there are several restricted shells available on net. If you cant find them try the following. You can write small shell script(say /bin/rksh) which does 'chroot' to '/restricted_home'. And then calls 'bash'. Under '/restricted_home' you can create 'bin/', 'home/temp/'. You might also have to create '/restricted_home/etc/passwd' with 'temp' user's entry(same as in /etc/passwd) in it. You can than put binaries(commands) in bin. Note that these binaries should NOT have any library dependencies, otherwise you might have to create '/restricted_home/lib/' and put files under it. Note that you must specify user's shell as '/bin/rksh' in /etc/passwd. Amish. Apache server.

Hi Everyone. 1)I have configured the apache sereve. But when I access the site. It gives me an error 403/.Forbidden. Where can I set the permission. Note all the dirroot and the related folders have nobody as user and group. sendmail rewriting for vsnl relay

I believe that I have managed to configure my sendmail.cf file to properly counter vsnl's new system. It uses separate generics tables for the header and the envelope. I still have to tweak it a bit, but it's getting better. If this mail gets through from my real address (iname.com) then you know that it has worked.
