sameer had written about a problem of getting into linux without the boot floopy i had the same problem sameer so i did this: 1.made a folder in c: and put loadlin.exe and vmlinuz into the same folder{loadloin willbe in the folder dosutils in ur CD}{vmlinuz in dosutils/autoboot} 2.made a bat file in c: with the following instructions: cd\ cd lboot loadlin c:\lboot\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 3.note: lboot was the folder i made in c: which had loadlin and vmlinuz and hda8 is the part of the hdd where i loaded RH7.1 4.the problem occured because u tried to load linux on cylinders after 1024 (pls try this at ur own risk, it did wrk for me) Namit. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? JunkBuster asking for chkconfig

Hi all, Yesterday I downloaded junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm and tried to install it using $ rpm -Uvh junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm The command returned failed dependancies asking for chkconfig However chkconfig is already installed on my system .. $ whereis chkconfig chkconfig /sbin/chkconfig No man page is available for chkconfig .. SIZE The size of the task's code plus data plus stack space, in kilobytes, is shown here. ...... RSS The total amount of physical memory used by the task, in kilobytes, is shown here. For ELF processes used library pages are counted here, for a.out processes not. ...... The SIZE and RSS fields don't count the page tables and the task_struct of a process; this is at least 12K of mem- ory that is always resident. >......ping my linux box from windows, i get a time out error.. Did try pinging by IP or hostname?? If IP works but hostname pinging doesn't then its Name-Resolution (DNS) problem. If IP pinging doesn't work either - I'm stumped! Fart

Size , RSS in top

Hi, Can anyone explain me the significance of Sice Vs RSS as reported by top and program performance ? I did a man top, but I am still confused. I have java and C programs running on my RH 6.2 box. One of the C programs shows RSS as 35M and size as 36664 Another instance shows RSS as 660 and size as 36500. Both are the same executable, but one instance is writing large chunks of data to a socket. Do I need to be concerned if RSS increases ? Or should I just care about size ? Thanks Shahed

boot loader error

Hi all, While installing the RH 7.1, I received the following error message. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An error occur while installing the bootloader. We HIGHLY recommend you make a recover boot floppy when prompted, otherwise you may not be able to reboot into RHL. The error report was: warning : device 0x0309 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit Fatal sector39745412 too large for linear mode ( try 'lba32' instead) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does it mean? How can I get rid of this? I created a boot floppy after this when prompted but, when I try to boot from floppy it gives the message: SYSLINUX 1.52 2001-02-07 Boot failed Now I'm not able to boot into the linux in any way.
