Boot Messages When linux boots there is a plethora of messages which really bugs me. Can I have a simple message like "Welcome To Linux" when I boot into linux instead of those overwhelming messages (those telling me my processor type, HDD type etc...or the ones telling me that the startup services are ' [ OK ] ' ) Mail Server Can I set up my own mail server ? In the PCQ's latest issue there are instructions on setting it in intranet. Can I set it up on my workstation ? Is there some site giving all the instructions Has someone among you tried it? Linux and Multimedia Yesterday I played a mpg file for the first time on linux and I was very disppointed by the performance . The file was almost played in slow motion :-( Windows media player gave me a better performance.Guess Linux and multimedia don't go well together . Kernel Comiplation I am relatively new to linux and when I get some major problems I get atleast one suggestion to ' compile the kernel ' . What does it mean? I only know C and Pascal programming . Can someone enlighten me please.

Using precompiled kernel

I just compiled linux-2.4.6 on RH 7.1 from the PCQ CD. Now, for some reason I want to remove my ext2 partition. I will be reinstalling RH later. So, in order to use the kernel I had compiled earlier, which files, other than the kernel image, do I need to backup. The modules/2.4.6 directory? Also, System.map-2.4.6 maybe? http://www.harbour-project.org/ is where one can find an GPLed Clipper compiler. You can probably use it to compile your FoxPro/BASE apps. Fart

Hallo friends, I am a beginner of Linux. I am about to shift my Novell netware platform to Linux. We are having one PIII 733 64 MB Ram, 20 GB HDD server and 10 diskless nodes. Please help me to sort out the problems. 1. Can I install Linux in the server and configure the diskless nodes under linux. Or all diskless nodes must have hard disk and I have to install work station in it. 2. Can I run the existing clipper programs in Linux. Or what is the alterations I have to make in Clipper programs to run under Linux. 3. What is the other alternative for Clipper, if I can't run clipper programs under Linux. 4. What is the minmum configuration required for server and workstations (Our nodes are Pentium 100s with 16 MB RAM) 5. Can the X windows can be accessed through diskless nodes. 6. Can I share the Internet/email using a Proxy server and diskless nodes. We are having one unlimited Satyam dailup connection, which is dailed through ordinary BSNL Line. If any body can help me to sort out the above problems, I am thankful to them. Regards, Vinod.
