[OT][crosspost]India's First Freedom Toaster Released

Dear All, GNU/Linux users group, Trivandrum (www.ilug-tvm.org) and Zyxware Technologies are conducting a 5 day install fest at Technopark,Trivandrum, primarily targeting the IT professionals working at Technopark.This 5 day mega install fest is being conducted at Park Center, Technopark, Trivandrum from September 1-5. With this event we at GNU/Linux users group, Trivandrum, hope to carry the message of Free Software aggressively to one of the largest IT parks in the country. We have also released India's first Freedom Toaster during the inauguration of this Install fest. This Freedomtoaster was designed and developed by Zyxware Technologies and is being jointly promoted with GNU/Linux Users Group Trivandrum. You can read more about it and check out available resources and photos at www.freedomtoaster.in. The whole concept was based on the original Freedomtoaster developed by the Shuttleworth Foundation. A Freedom Toaster is basically a self contained kiosk that will burn any one of the free software distributions onto user supplied optical media. The freedom toaster serves as an easy way to distribute free software(mainly GNU/Linux distributions). Such a dispensing mechanism is highly relevant in a country like India where unlimited broadband internet is not exactly cheap, whereas the chief source of free software remains the internet. The freedom toaster intends to bridge that gap and thus make free and open source software easily accessible to the public, minimal human intervention being an added advantage. Along with the install fest we are also conducting a technical seminar series on various Free Software topics. Also visitors will have the opportunity to try out different GNU/Linux distributions and also many software including popular Free Software games. There will also be opportunities for visitors to get their questions regarding free software applications answered by experts. Kerala State IT Mission, SPACE Kerala and FSF India are the other partner organizations who are behind this and BSNL is sponsoring the event. Together, we have been successful in organizing similar events in the city this year. We hope that, the event and our freedom toaster initiative will get support from all like minded people all over the country and hopefully this will become an inspiration for other people to take the initiative and further strengthen the free software movement in our country. Making DVDs videos from youtube.com is that possible using KUBUNTU LINUX tools. Is it legal. Use of Kubuntu LINUX to watch "naughty" sites.

Hi, I noticed that nobody is interested in a secure operating system like Kubuntu LINUX (CD-ROM available in 10 weeks by shipping). But with dual-boot Kubuntu LINUX can one watch any videos and any image sites without getting spyware and viruses and ad-ware -------------- that is very serious --------- some idiots might want to turn off google preferences from advanced to "watch everything" and then type in "naked mary" or some thing. On youtube.com can you make DVDs off videos off youtube.com I mean MTNL is free download at night and some idiot might make a huge DVD off videos of youtube.com Those would show all over the world. Of course, uploads by MTNL are free so nice, decent photos and videos can be posted for free. BUT is all this possible using KUBUNTU LINUX or any other linux. Erach

hi, why do hardware vendors recommend customers to go for windows rather than linux? Most common reason is that they know nothing about linux, or are not confident of supporting linux. No one wants to admit lack of knowledge - so they recommend against it. Not evil minds - just ignorance. windows dlls v/s wine --- would need all older versions of WINE too to run under virtualboxes running LINUX

No, virtualbox emulates the Intel hardware and you select the version of the hardware and the guest and host operating system. Then you install your copy of Windows and then run visual c++ and visual basic on it. Do do the same in linux, one would have to run different instances of virtual box on linux, below the virtual box, run different (older) versions of WINE and then the visual C++ and visual basic would run legally under the different versions of WINE. By the way, I did run Microsoft Office under WINE, and TALLY under WINE but the next day they did not run. I wish somebody would come up with an open source / free ERP version / or at least a TALLY. [OT] Mini Laptop Makers Hoodwink Potential Buyers.

Hello, I am looking for a good mini laptop with the new Atom processor but find the manufacturers using gimmicks to promote their products. First they announce a product launch by a certain date in order to apply the brakes on the rival products and still there is no mention in the news about the launch. Even during the initial unveiling of the product, they mention very low prices like 300 to 400 USD as the likely price and after the product is launched it is much above 600 USD. For the Indian buyer it is a whopping 10K above the previous rate. Even the iphone 3G is sold at a much lower rate in the US and in India which is price sensitive it is priced too high, almost double. Installing Windows applications via virtualbox or WINE

I have a comment on virtualization v/s WINE. WINE does not run my old Visual C++ or Visual Basic Compiler which runs on the Windows 98 because it says "sorry the new DLL's of Internet explorer 6.0 or 7.0 are here and conflict with the internet explorer 3.0 dll's of visual basic). So I prefer virtualization. That time, less memory was needed --- so it is easy to run multiple Operating System's on one machine. Of course, one should upgrade to keep enhancing the software ---- but I only want to learn my Visual Basic again. It seems my Visual Basic, Visual Windows C++ and Microsoft Windows 98 edition are finally obsoleted if I try to use Wine but not if I use virtual box. Erach
