[OT] Postal estamps with emails.

Hello All, Many a times my clients as well as I face problems with sending small software files as attachments by email because the spam filters of various email providers block even genuine messages. Emailing has become very unreliable to send important messages. Many a times even genuine text mails are rejected by servers. There have been attempts by some email providers to use a paid stamp like system for emails so that those emails are not rejected by other providers. however this is a private effort and prices may vary from different email providers. Rivalry between providers could also result in problems of access. The postal department of any country is the Govt. flagship and is never private. Postal agreements are between governments of nations. So can we have a similar agreement on email stamps (digital signatures) by postal depts. of every nation where a national online account is created for users within that country and this account is refilled locally just like the mobile pre-paid refills. As a statutory requirement, all email providers must recognize and accept mails that carry these Postal Estamps and deliver the messages directly to the inbox of the recipient. Offline email clients like Thunderbird can carry an option to 'add estamp'. The estamp account holder simply clicks a button which uses a user_name and password to fetch a stamp and attach it to the mail. The mail will be sent only after the stamp is fetched so its headers will not contain any information of the estamp login/passwd. The cost of estamps will be definitely lower than normal postage and that may also encourage more senders to get net savvy. All stamps will be of the same value, say 5paise to 25paise per stamp. The high volume of genuine mail traffic will provide a huge revenue for the Postal Dept. The spam guards can continue to filter mails like they did before except for *any* mails from *any* server that carries an estamp. This will also help recognize many small local mail servers that directly send mail and are otherwise rejected by other servers. We can setup our own mail servers that will be recognized by all. Hello All, Seems as if, Mr. Eshwar's (hope spelled it correctly), hardware details were blocked. I, on his behalf, am posting his details. Intel's website recommends Mandriva 2007 to work out of the box. If someone near the easter suburbs of Mumbai (KanjurMarg, Thane, Bhandup), could help him out with a copy of Mandriva 2007, please do so. Alternatively, if you have tested any other distro with this hardware and would like to recommend that, please let the list (and him) know about it. Here's his hardware details. There's a couse at MUM Univ. teaching GNU/Linux!

Hello All, Thought of sharing this with all on the list. There's actually a course (a diploma course) that has a paper called "Fundamentals of Operating System - Linux OS", with GNU/Linux (or Linux based distro). So, there are course that have exposure to GNU/Linux (or Linux based distro). The course is called "Diploma If any student, who is currently pursuing this course, please comment on this thread. I hope they are not using Redhat Linux 9.0 for demos ;) Perhaps, there are a few more. I think, they should be aware of this list and join it. Attend GLUG-meets. Offline Installation of Sun Java on Edubuntu Server

I require to install Sun Java on Edubuntu Server offline The problem is that I don't have Internet on the Linux Machine and so need to download the Sun Java for the Linux version and get the things and also need Postgresql and MySQL as the database for the same. I had gone to the java.sun.com and they have Java for Linux in form of Self Extracting format. I had also seen http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/sun-java5-jre In that page I find that I should download http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java5/sun-java5_1.5.… which is about 88 MB which is too large for download as the Sun's site has only about 16 MB. I require the database also Postgresql and MySQL Can anyone give me appropriate pointers to me to install me in a ubuntu machine Can anyone help me Thanks in advance CSJakharia P.S. Please remember I can't use apt-get command as I have to download the packages from other machine and get those packages in the linux machine --------------------------------- Bored stiff? Of Java, GPL, Gosling, and other things

Hello, Everyone was over the moon when Sun accounced Java would be going GPL. We heard a lot of stuff from corporates, FSF, etc... but i didn't see much of a visible reaction from Sun's core development team, namely James Gosling. i just came across this, it seems a lot of developers wanted all of Java to be free as in freedom from day 1 and were pretty annoyed that it would not be so. Thus i did some searching and i found this quote from Gosling himself : ``I'm really happy we're finally getting it done (the only thing I'm unhappy about is how many complexities there are to take care of - don't worry, we'll get it done). No, I'm not job hunting: Sun is fun again!
