One of my friends have a Intel 915GV Pentium 4 HT machine, and although I have never seen him encounter any issues with his LAN card, but he does have trouble with his resolution at times. As far as I remember, Fedora Core 5 managed just fine, but Ubuntu 6.06 had issues. This was solved using a program called 915resolution. It is there in the Ubuntu repositories, so one can use Synaptic to install it. There is a similar program called 855resolution meant for Intel 855 based boards. Is there any specific reason to use Ubuntu? If not then you can try http://www.pendrivelinux.com/, which has HOWTOs with Puppy Linux and Knoppix. For Fedora based systems, there is a tool called Kadischi which generates a customised live CD from a specified repository of RPMs. Kadischi is still in beta stage, but they are planning to make it capable of generating live USB devices and not only CDs. apache with local vhost files

hi, i have a server where numerous domains are served through apache virtual hosts. This is on debian sarge. So I make one file per domain in sites-available and symlink to sites-enabled. This is getting to be a bit of a bore. I would like the users to make their own vhost files and keep them in their home directories and to symlink from there to sites-enabled. A small exposure to GNU/Linux

This post is sent to three lists (GNU/Linux , FSF-EDU, FSF-FRIENDS) because I wanted to share this experience and also have a small question. I was asked to present a seminar on a topic assigned to me. The seminar topic doesn't have much relevance to this post, but there was something different that I tried. In a way, I have exposed "Free Software, Ubuntu LIVE CD" distro to my classmates and one of my professor. I didn't speak about GNU and Free Software, but I did mention about considering (GNU/Linux) as an alternative to Windows. One mistake I committed, was I being a bit bais to GNU/Linux and pin-pointing _only_ Microsoft to be responsible for proprietary software. The question that I have ask is this. We had a DLP Projector that could not synchronize with the hardware and the display always went out of Range for Ubuntu 6.06. challenge: customise ubuntu basic system to run from USB disk

hello all. I am putting this challenge with reference to my portable book reader project. I want a way to customise my basic ubuntu system and run it from a USB flash card that is put in mobiles or in cameras. or may be a pen drive? the system will be as follows. 1> a kernel having only those modules required to boot from a USB disk and having sound, display, and other necessary things. the kernel wont have network drivers or even ide drivers. no cd rom drivers. 2. I want to make such an OS on the computer and then port it to usb. 3. I know I wont be able to boot this small system from my hard disk after saying that I will exclude ide drivers. I want a way in which I can create a chroot jail in my existing ubuntu box and try things around a bit. then some how may be format the USB disk with ext2 and then put it on there. or may be make an iso image like what slax does and put it on the pen drive with the help of unionfs. any ideas? Hello Mr. Krishnakant, I have actually managed to find a link though, I cannot guarantee the CD / DVD quality because I personally do not have any experience of purchasing it from this Vendor. The Vendor is Kiraninfotech and they have their website where you can order Debain CDs. http://www.kiraninfotech.com/store/ What actually brings me to this vendor is that he's listed on Knoppix's Website for purchasing Knoppix CD's from India. Get a file through FTP

Hi, i have some problem in FTPing a file, googling could not help around. I have a shell script wriiten on my linux machine(Server A) that get's a csv file from another server(Server B). Every minute , a csv file is updated on Server B and every 30 secs the Server A gets the file from B. a funny insident with me, gnu/linux debate.

hello every one. relax and just chil out with the following real joke that took place with me on 15th. at a school where I was advocating gnu/linux over m$ with one of the "naukars of MR bil dada". I was at a function for my falisitation from my own school in dadar. the guest of honour was some one from microsoft since they donated 100 computers with windows of captivity to the school. as usual I was explaining the authorities at my school why they should not teach windows to young students and do bad sanskars on them. actually one of the dignitories MR. Nitin Shah was also an associate of redhat linux. so I had one person to speek for me as well. the ms guy started to show me down by saying you un organised geeks don't even know what Information Technology means to people. and u can only develop academic toys for college students who want to know what is an OS like. your system can't offer any thing except a toy box. I told him "sir, there was a hindi film called divar just few years back, I just transfered one of its famous dylogs into IT" MR. Bil Gaits: "mere pas word hain, excel hain, access hain, power point hain, SQL server hain, tumhre pas kya hain bolo kya hain tumhare pas!" I say "mere pas freedom hain". this just came out sponteneously and out of the box. the entire staff was in throws of laughter. and it was then that they asked me what did I say that even some one from MS can't answer. the rest is not history but will be future. enjoy.
