Welcome to the GNU/Linux User Group of Bombay (ilug-bom)! READ THESE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM CLOSELY Now that you are a member you can read and post mails to the group. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too". Messages larger than 7k will not be posted immediately. Such messages will need the list admin's approval. 3. Focus on one subject per message and always include a pertinent subject title for the message, that way the user can locate the message quickly. Also please include a suitable header in case of Commercial / Offtopic mails. Do NOT use subject headers like "HELP", "One question". Most experienced users will simply ignore these mails. 4. Capitalise words only to highlight an important point or to distinguish a title or heading. Capitalizing whole words that are not titles is generally termed as SHOUTING! *Asterisks* surrounding a word can be used to make a stronger point. Use the underscore symbol before and after the title of a book, i.e. _Linux Configuration And Installation_ Underscores may also be used to signify _underlining_, while surrounding your text with slashes makes it /italics/. 5. Limit line length to approximately 65-70 characters and avoid control characters. This helps ensure that lines don't grow too long after several levels of replies. Remember that each reply adds one level of > to the start of the line. 6. NEVER send chain letters to the mailing list. A mail simultaneously sent to more than 10 users will not reach the list. This is to eliminate possible spammers/bulk mailers to reach the list. 7. Be careful when using sarcasm and humour. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humourous, use emoticons (smileys) to express humour. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humour. 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Please remember that we have both male and female members. No gender abuse is allowed on the list, and do not include any gender specific slang in your posts. 10. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Examples: IMHO = in my humble/honest opinion FYI = for your information BTW = by the way Flame = antagonistic criticism. http://www.jargon.org for more such acronymns. 11. Please provide URL's to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. In any case your posting may not be more than 7k. Occassionally if you may have to send such a mail, post it, it will reach the members after the list admin approves it. 12. When using the mailing list for commercial purpose, please prefix the subject line with "COMMERCIAL". 13. Please *read all your mails before replying* to a mail. Someone may have already answered it. 14. Remember that most of the people are paying by the minute for their internet access. Some pay per byte. Hence please do not waste bandwidth. Ensure your posts are in plain text only. Do not post html mails, or include attachments. Restrict signatures to not more than 4 lines of 72 column text. Do NOT include company disclaimers in your messages. 15. Any violation to the above will be given a warning. 5 such warnings and the subscriber will be suspended from the mailing list for 15 days. Votes were taken on whether to block non-text messages or not. 740 subscribers. About 30 participated in the vote 18 - for 9 - against 3 - i cannot figure out what they said There was also 1 vote for Digests being MIMEd. One common request from all camps was that html mails/senders of these mails should not be blocked completely, but if possible should be converted to text and sent forward. If it is blocked, then the user should be notified about why it was blocked and how he can fix it. Admin's decision: filter content. primarily text/plain will be allowed through. signed mails will also be allowed. text/html will be converted to text/plain. Other attachments will be stripped. Messages will be dropped if there is nothing left in them after filtering (eg, someone sends html mail that has no content). -- List Admin

Blocking any attachments is fine, but blocking html to favour plain text would be like buying a new computer just because your operating system doesn't support it. Why can't there be html support into procmail, mutt, etc (lynx code could provide a hint)? We're trying to get people interested in GNU/Linux, not to tell them "You are welcome, but only on our conditions. Don't use html mailing. Don't call GNU/Linux as Linux (boy do we have flame fests on that one)....". All I heard from the mutt and procmail users here is "change mailing list policies for us because our systems don't like them". Why doesn't anyone come forward and say "lets start a mini project to incorporate html support into procmail/mutt". The whole concept of GNU/Linux being a geeks OS only is being stressed here by saying "you gotta learn alternate (probably dificult for some) ways to express yourself by using your imagination. If you're not good enough then Linux is not for you.. go to your sucky windows". Ban html messages and lose the initiative on getting newbies into the GLUG. Getting warning messages the first time doesn't exactly seem to be a welcoming sign for any newbie probably struggling to install the OS on his system. Let it remain an elitist group then. problem starting emacs

i connect to a gnu/linux server through telnet. on the server, emacs is installed, but X is not. when i try to start emacs, it gives the foll error (i guess this is because emacs is trying to start X). emacs: error in loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.7: cannot open shared obje ct file: No such file or directory is there any way to start emacs in the non-gui mode (i know this can be done, but don't know how to do it). at my home, if i open emacs in the prompt mode (with the X stopped), it opens automatically in the non-gui mode. the server is managed by a sysadmin. do i need to tell him to do something, or can it be done if i add something in my ".bashrc" or ".emacsrc" files? i would be thankful if anyone could suggest some way to do it.

raid problem

Dear All, At the time of installation I created two patations for raid in that first raid partation is one harddisk and second raid partation is another harddisk. After installation I am not getting that /etc/raidtab file. Is any one is having experience in raid plz help me. Curently I am using redhat 8. Thanx in Advance. Warm Regards, Vaasu
