tar backup

Hi I am using a tar command to take my 5 gb data backup on Hp dat drive. I am using tar -zcvf /dev/st0 directories to take backup For restoring tar -zxvf /dev/st0 directories to take retore it It is taking lot of time to restore the files .I think when i am tring to restore any file it serially reads all files prior to files i want to take backup so it is taking time to restore it. Is there any command by which i can tell dat to automatically get forward to location of file which I want to take back & restore it. Rgds girish __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? YANB help for installation of onboard soundcard

I need to install alsa and need a copy of original redhat 8.0 copy (physce or something) Also How do I ionstall alsa RPM or the tar files ? Please solve my problem of installing onboard sound card IT's VIA8233 as for as linux diagnostics go. Re: Windows tries to read linux partition

Hi, I am using Grub Bootloader. My linux partition is visible in windows as D (hda6). It can't read the filesystem but asks to format it time and again. I'm afraid that one of my family members might say yes to it and ruin everything for me. I tried the 'hide (hd0,5)' option in the grub console, but even that doesn't work. I tried searching around in google for it. Couldn't find anything useful. Please help. I have a windows partition as hda5. But in windows it shows an unrecognized device as D and the windows partition as E. Siddhesh

Knoppix V/s RedHat Booting problem.

Hello Friends, I am new to the group and xcited about it. I am a newbie to Linux using it since last Five Months. I have problem at hand. I have installed Knoppix 3.2 and RH 9.0 on a single HDD. Knoppix uses LILO and RH uses GRUB by default as the bootloader. I installed Knoppix first on /dev/hda1 with LILO in the MBR. After that while installing RH on /dev/hda3 the Knoppix OS was not detected as the second OS. So I added a Entry called Knoppix and partition as /dev/hda1. But when the system boots it does show the Knoppix entry but does not boot from it. I booted from a Knoppix bootable and did LILO Config. But due to that the GRUB was wiped out. I want to know how I can install GRUB with Knoppix as a OS option on the same drive. Or I will have to boot Knoppix from a bootable floppy everytime. Can anyone help? Hi, I have written a small shell script to salvage bad CDs. This script could be useful for recovering Video CDs.
