July GLUG meet

Dear All, We are organizing a Firefox community event in association with Mozilla Foundation on 14th July at Magnet office in Kandivali East. I have just posted the plan here: http://www.mehtanirav.com/2007/06/29/join-hands-with-firefox/ Was thinking we can also do the GLUG meet that evening at our place. Dibya Prakash has agreed to take a session on Ruby On Rails. Everyone is invited to attend the Firefox event, as well as the LUG meet. We can keep the LUG meet between 5.30 to 7PM. Well they finally did it and a beta is out already - http://desktop.google.com A quick review - 1. Its fast and returns good results 2. Its still (beta) heavy ( 13 MB footprint in memory ) as compared to windows counterpart. 3. Its very responsive and easy to use. 4. The directories it searches by default is pretty good. 5. Extensible with other plugins. Am not sure how many plugins will work with the linux one. 6. Works with Ubuntu ( the favored one these days ) and rh/sles. 7. Bad bad thing - closed source. They should really find way to wrap their algorithms than closing off the entire app. Beagle with its mono bindings was a bit too slow for me ( i could hear my laptop hdd whir ). And trackerd with catfish was more than tricky to configure for any relevant results. So as of now google desktop wins the competion ( was there one ?) despite its flaws. whats your take on it ? regards, C

Hi, Now that beryl and compiz have kissed and made up, the new improved kid on the block is called "Compiz Fusion" A nice how to for ubuntu-users - http://vorian.org/?p=82 Basically you need the packages from Trevino's repositories. If you face problem with video playback windows then using ccsm (compizconfig settings manager ) add this to "General Options" > "Opacity Settings" > "Opacity windows" > ((type= Unknown | Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu | Tooltip | Notification | Combo | Dnd | name=sun-awt-X11-XWindowPeer) | (type=Normal & override_redirect=1)) & !(name=sun-awt-X11-XFramePeer | name=sun-awt-X11-XDialogPeer | name=MPlayer ) Oh and keep watching for the new zoom out plugin. It works flawlessly on my measly T42 with 512 MB ram and ATI Mobility. regards, C

Hello All, I was searching for firewall testers and came across this link. http://www.auditmypc.com/anonymous-surfing.asp This link tells you what information your pc gives to the website. It shows the ip address which is quite normal, but it also gives an area map of where you are located within Mumbai using google maps. My query is that how do they find out the area _within_ the city of your ip address? What does the number value immediately after Bombay indicate? Triband users try it out. The course will be held between 16th-19th July, 2007 at IITB. Kfind does not search symbolic link directories

Hi, I am not able to search Symbolic link directories with Kfind. Kfind is a file searching tool in KDE. It can be used stand alone or from within Konqueror under Tool > Find File. When queried for a file, the searching does not include symbolic link directory. I couldn't find a way to do so. There are many options to search for specific *types* of file (image, audio, device, link, etc.) , modification time, etc. but no option to tell kfind to look into symbolic link directories. Any ideas on what I am missing out ? With gnu's "find" command, there is an option " -L " which scans symbolic link directories too. How does one do it with Kfind ? I couldn't find much with google.
