Importance of Free Software in Democracies.

Hello All, At the recent speech by Mr. George G. of FSF Europe in HBCSE, he mentioned a very important point which I liked and want to pass on to those who did not attend. He explained..... In today's world knowledge is getting more and more digitized. Due to this digitization, it is the major Corporates that are controlling access to this knowledge through software code. In a Democracy where information (knowledge) should flow freely and be accessible to all, this control of knowledge by the software giants is dangerous and unwanted. This is even more important for the Governments to ensure that third parties do not control their data. Therefore its is absolutely necessary that Governments of Democratic Nations adopt free software and formats in order to safeguard their data and get it out of the clutches and control of the corporate entities. -- Regards, Rony. Actually, this default behaviour is a little irritating. As Mukund says, the default behaviour should be that of a mass storage device. However, what actually happens for many devices such as cameras, the default application (say for instance iPhoto in the case of a camera) starts up and the file navigator (Finder) does not show the device loaded at all (which is the default behaviour for ordinary mass storage devices). is IE6.5 or higher w3c compliant

As the subject says is IE6.5 or higher w3c compliant and how compliant are other browsers in displaying a w3c compliant page. Basically there is a conflict going on at a potential client since one of the vendors wants that crap to run so that his app which is browser based can function. If the o/p of his app is w3c compliant FF / Konqueror / lynx should work properly and he shouldnt care what runs on a client. Since the vendor is a software giant and i will be kicking ass, i want to make sure. google throws up pages of irrelevant (almost) stuff. On a related note are there standrds for xml and does M$ push it's own version. -- Rgds JTD

Can not login in KDE

I am Debian Etch user. Last day onwards i am not able to login in KDE ( GUI ) with normal user. but console login was successful. I created new user but stilll not worked. I enabled ROOT login by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. So i am able to login with ROOT in GUI Syslog shows following error can't save user authentication in home directory. -- With Regards Abhishek Amberkar There is no operating system but GNU, and Linux is one of its kernels.

Colloquium on FREE SOFTWARE AND SCIENCE by Georg Greve, President, Free Software Foundation Europe On Thursday June 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm Venue: V G Kulkarni Auditorium, HBCSE ABOUT THE TALK FREE SOFTWARE AND SCIENCE Free Software and science share common roots, and benefit society in several similar ways. In his talk, Mr Greve will explain the concept of Free Software and how it relates to maintaining our scientific basis as a society. As a practical example of this collaboration, the talk will give a brief introduction of the Science, Education and Learning in Freedom project, in which the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research plays a crucial role. The talk will close with an overview of how all of this relates to the global political trends of knowledge monopolisation, and the Access to Knowledge initiative. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Georg C.F. Greve President, Free Software Foundation Europe In early 2001, Georg Greve initiated the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE, FSF Europe), the first Free Software Foundation outside the United States of America and the largest transnational Free Software Foundation so far. Construction and coordination of FSFE as European non-governmental organisation, as well as its integration and coordination in global context was the focus of his work in the past years. Georg writes in the "Brave GNU World," a monthly column on free software published on the Internet in as many as 10 languages, and in international magazines including the German Linux-Magazin. How to Boost Speed of OLSR Mesh?

Hello All, At the wireless mesh setup in HBCSE, the download speed was very slow, max. 1 to 1.2 Mbps for a single user.
