report on the stake holders meeting

I attended the stake holders meeting in Mumbai at the Patent's office. The room was full of people, more than 80 people attended the meet. Of which about 30 were interested in the software issue. the rest of them are interested mostly in bioinformatics, chemical processes etc. What gave me solace is that this is not an attempt to modify the law. So, status quo exists. software patents per se are not possible in India. However. what the office is doing is it prepared a draft of a Manual helping the inventors in how to apply for a patent. In that manual, there is an attempt to suggest how to exploit the 'per se' and apply for software patents in combination with hardware. Due to several questions on this issue raised by several of us, and also due to written feedback submitted by quite a few others in Delhi meet, they are organizing a stake holders meeting in Bangalore later (in the coming three to four months period) where they are going to settle all the doubts and listen all the points of view. The date of bangalore meeting is not yet announced. Meanwhile, chennai and kolkatta meetings are still going to be held before the bangalore meeting. It is a good idea to send our supporters to both these places, so that the officers must see that there is sufficient opposition to this manipulation. Nagarjuna

[OT] Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapters - product suggestion

For power, my network device is PoE capable and also has a 12V/1A DC in. There are no power outlets near the device. Also, the ethernet switch does not have any PoE ports. I am looking for an adapter, that sits in the closet alongside the ethernet switch, with input a) Jack for DC12V/1A in, b) RJ45 LAN in (from switch), and output A) RJ45 LAN out (ethernet+dc power). Mr. Rajesh, of NIXI ( www.nixi.in / The National Internet eXchange of India ) will be in Mumbai on Monday, 4th of August. He would be visiting the Directi office in Mumbai and would be very interested to meet LUG members. One of agenda for the meeting is for sponsoring bandwidth for foss projects or foss setups like - local copy of sf.net, debian/fedora/ubuntu/yourfavdistro, indlinux mirrors. wifi card configuration help needed....

hey guys, I am trying to configure an atheros AR5007EG wifi card on fc8 with kernel version 2.6.25.11-60.fc8 i install it using yum install madwifi* it got install properly without any errors... but when i do ifconfig -a it doesnt show me any wifi interface i did modprobe ath_pci its shows me modules installed ... so i went through madwifi how-to ...there they have mention steps in to create interface but those steps dont work here is what i get:- # wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device #wlanconfig ath0 destroy wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device what those these means??? does anybody has configured this chipset on fc8 well i am configuring it on my acer laptop (Aspire 5053) Regards Advait Raut

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. How much time it takes depends on the kind of customization your looking for. On a Ubuntu / Kubuntu based system , you can use remastersys or reconstructor. http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-linux-mint-livecd-with-remastersys Thats a how-to on remastersys to get you started. The only thing to remember is that remastersys will automatically include all packages installed on your system into the custom distribution. So its best to use it on a new install. That will prevent installation of unrequired software. Here is the link for Reconstructor : http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/ This is a good tool as well. Has some more customizations. The best way is to make a Live Distro from scratch. That way you can keep it quite trim by removing all unnecessary packages. You can also have a different window manager if you want to keep it really small. There are also tools to customize fedora , knoppix, slax , DSL etc. Another tool worth mentioning is Insta Linux http://www.instalinux.com/ Its a online app where u can choose what apps you want. Need Live CD Focused on "Education"

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. EduMorphix was just perfect, I dont know why they decided to dis-continue it. Freeduc (http://www.ofset.org/freeduc-cd) is not updated in a long time either There is no Live CD for edubuntu. But still it makes sense to read and understand them before implementation. Remember to encrypt your ssh private key. Never leave it on the disk in raw form unless you have some compelling reasons to do so. Sometimes using passphrase based encryption is not feasible at all, like to auto-execute some commands on remote system when human operator is not present in front of the terminal to supply it. In such cases, the private key is kept on the disk in its raw form. I am assuming that your are present in front of the terminal from where your program is fired. This will allow you to supply the passphase on demand. If your program is fired multiple times in a session or connects to multiple systems in a session then these password prompts might become annoying. In such cases, consider using the utility ssh-add. It takes your passphrase while starting up and keeps it in the memory for on demand supply. Thus you can supply the passphrase once and then run your program without supplying it again. But remember to run "ssh-add -D" when all your ssh related work is over. > Can any one please advice or guide me how to achieve this > kind of encryption. If you mean a custom encryption scheme here, I would say that cooking up such a scheme is always a bad idea. It requires a lot of mathematical skills to develop a good encryption scheme. In 2005, I was involved in the Patent Amendment Act 2005 and on behalf of Red Hat, we had made representations to policy makers on why software patents are bad for the Indian software industry. At that time, Lawrence Liang and Prashanth Iyengar of the Alternative Law Forum had done a fantastic job of putting together a position paper on this issue virtually overnight. Happily, our lobbying was successful and software was kept out of the Amendment. What makes me hopping mad is that the Draft Manual seeks to bring in through the backdoor, something that was explicitly rejected by the Indian parliament. To say the very least, this is a very dubious practice. Interestingly, Infosys and TCS are in favor of software patents. Those who followed the OOXML fight on this blog would know that both these organizations had voted in favor of Microsoft's OOXML proposal. If there are articulate FOSS developers in the Mumbai LUG, I would request them to be present at the 7th August 2008 meeting and explain to the group why software patents are against the interest of the developer community.

Is there any way to encrypt my password in the same script which system or script can understande but when any one else open my script not able to read that password line. Hi, I use an eclipse plugin called Mylyn [1]. Mylyn allows me to group my work into tasks (integrates with things like Bugzilla, trac etc.)[2]. The best thing that Mylyn provides is that it creates separate contexts for each of these tasks. The context influences what I see in a particular eclipse view. So for example, in the file explorer view in eclipse, I only see files that I have changed while working in this context. Additionally it also influences the auto suggest options. The context feature works great when you have to frequenly switch between tasks. It allows you to get back into the mode for solving a particular task. I was wondering if something similar for the shell would be useful. It could for example alter the history to only have the commands that you used in the context of working on a paritcular task. It could maybe even set up env accordingly. PC hangs on md5sum DVD.ISO

Hello, Off late I am having problems with downloaded DVD isos. Earlier I have downloaded 4 Debian DVD isos as well as the Etch Updates DVD iso and all their md5sum results were fine. Now I find that the Sabayon as well as the Debian DVD1 isos throw an 'Input/Output Error' and after that the link between the system and my HDD appears to be lost as no command is accepted and the system as well as the display goes for a toss. _simple_ checkbook balancing program

I am looking for a _simple_ checkbook balancing program. All I need is to be able to enter my debits and credits and be able to print it out to give it to my CA. The ability to print (ideally directly) is essential. Incrementing check numbers would be nice too. The ability to import a qif file is a plus point but not absolutely essential. Previously I used gacc w/ kubuntu 6.04 (and fedora -- I forget which version). This was the perfect solution. Unfortunately after upgrading to kubuntu 7.04 (and 8.04) gacc does not work. What happens is that though the program opens, there is no text in the menu bar or the status bar. The same is the trouble with cbtracker. Here again, the program starts up but I run up against this problem of no text in the menu or status bar. I wrote to the author and he suggested that it could be a problem with the gtk theme and maybe changing the gtk theme might help. Google also gave a similar answer but for older versions of kubuntu. The software that helped in these cases is no longer available for kubuntu 7.x or 8.x. I installed _all_the gtk-themes available. None helped. Asking on the kubuntu list turned up exactly zero answers :(. Okay so back to google. I found pycheckbook but it messes up the dates when it imports a qif file. All the dates are changed to the present date. Also, it won't print directly. You need to export to text then open in vim or OOo and more often than not the formatting is screwed up. I also found chkbk. Just a shell script but no export or printing support that I could find. Next was cbb. Again no direct printing possible. Then I looked at brinance. A cli program that takes a cli parameter everytime you run it. Depends upon Brinance.pm -- a perl module that the author accepts is not very perl-ish and hence may give different results. I looked at kmymoney, gnucash, buddi. Kmymoney, nicely integrates with kde, imports qif files correctly after a bit of fiddling. But it won't let me print just a record of my transcations. Too much shoo sha for my taste (or even need). I tried gnucash but it is greatly overkill. Buddi won't import _anything_ :( . Maybe I'm missing something but the import and export commands are greyed out. Hi, There are lots of technical questions and answers which are being answered on this list. Can you make this list a searchable list (instead of merely downloading the zipped files) or put it on yahoo groups (viewable by everybody ----- how does one prevent SPAM) or google groups so everybody can view it. Also, note that the OLPC XO notebook with built-in OLSR is available in Nepal for $ 125. I had got Microsoft Word and Excel and powerpoint to work under WINE on Kubuntu LINUX but then again it became non-workable the next day. I can't get Tally to connect properly under WINE. wlan to lan to internet

I have a machine w/ kubuntu w/ a wlan0 (runing w/ ndiswrapper) connecting to the net via braodband modem. I now want to connect my laptop to the net thru the broadband modem via the wifi. I followed this link: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274790-highlight-adhoc+wireless.html I managed to get the laptop talking to the kubuntu machine and I can even browse the net on the laptop. The problem is that I have lost internet connectivity on the kubuntu machine :( . No ping, no web access, zilch. I have the follwoing setup: modem <-> (pub.lic.I.P) PC <-> wifi (192.168.1.202) <-> (192.168.1.204) laptop I have made the requisite changes in the commands shown on this page. where is the problem ? do I need any changes to this line ? route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 10.0.1.1 I've changed it to route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 192.168.1.202 regards, Sharukh -- Dr. Sharukh K. Hi, I recently got hold of the latest prototype of the above data logger that is being manufactured by a Mumbai firm. In looks it is an unimpressive rectangular box without a display. It is meant purely for logging trackpoints and waypoints. It claims to be 32 channel and has 4 MB RAM. It has 1. power/lo battery LED 2. Satellite LED - glows red on satellite acquisition 3. Computer/Memory full LED 4. Waypoint LED 1. Power button 2. Computer button 3. Waypoint button It runs on a Nokia cell phone battery and can be charged with a standard nokia charger. There is a serial port and a screw to attach an antenna. The antenna comes with a 3 metre cable and has a powerful magnet. A serial cable is provided with two outlets - one for downloading the GPS data and the other for direct instrument to computer reading. The cable also has a bell-push for recording waypoints. Usage: in a car, stick the antenna on the roof, the instrument inside and tape the way point bellpush to the steering wheel - similar arrangement for a bike. Walking, keep the unit in a pocket, the antenna in a shirt pocket and the waypoint bell push in your hand. Getting data: Connect to a PC using a serial-usb cable. Type cat /dev/ttyUSB0 > filename.txt, and the data is transferred. Hi, does anyone have a full/partial debian mirror ( dists - lenny , arch - i386/amd64 )? or anyone have fat (& unlimited bandwidth) to update one ( I have a june 2007 one - total download required would be about 20GB - binary only ). problem updating lenny mirror on slow pipe is by the time mirror is half update, a quarter of it would have already changed!.. actually i got my answer. yes it does require a server like VNC-server or any remote desktop server. Actually if you use CentOS [or any other distro for that matter] , it will automate the remote desktop access feature for you. The CentOS remote desktop app is quite configurable as well. but one more thing. how do i get a remote desk top. do i need to install a VNC in server also? to get this. if yes then is it possible to get a remote desktop without installing any thing to server? I cant really understand your question. However from what I understand, you want to find out whether the remote computer you are trying to connect from needs any additional software. [ Please correct me if I am wrong ]. Using a package called vnc-java , You can access your computer from any location that has a Java -enabled web browser. Installing a web server

Hi I have downloaded Apache2.2.9 tar file.The instalation guide asks me to copy the tar file in /usr/local/directory.but i am not able to do it because it says I don't have any rights since i am not in root.Also I tried to do in my own directory.This is what i did: I unzipped the tar file of Apache(its name being httpd-2.2.9.tar.bz2) in my own directory.Then using terminal i connected directory by 'cd' then did ./configure. After that it does lots of checking and then i did 'make' and after lots of procedure i did 'make install'.These were the instructions given in the LINUX FOR YOU magazine in one of the articles regarding setting up web servers.But then how do i know my server has started, Then anyone could anyone guide me with PHP5.2.6 installation in short word. who moved Mumbai?

Hi, I was editing the OSM map in the Juhu area, and found that, compared to the yahoo image and to the existing traces, the whole map seems to have slipped a good way south and slightly east also. I checked other parts of the map and find the same error every where. Since the existing GPS traces also coincide with the Yahoo map, I think that somehow someone has moved the whole map of Mumbai south and east. It may also be because my laptop has low memory or something, but i doubt it as I do not see the same problem in Delhi, Bangalore or Chennai. hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. If you can boot in verbose mode , you can tell us where exactly the boot process is halting. may i get centos DVD. This is from the CentOS Website. DVD's ----- DVD's are normally available for each version, but the ISO files are not normally included in the ISO directory. You can download the CentOS DVD's via bittorrent. This is because of the following reasons: 1. Files greater than 2 GB are not served properly buy the default apache included in CentOS (and many other distros), so external (public) CentOS mirrors would end up with large files that they could not serve taking up space on thier servers. 2. Including all DVDs in the mirror would increase the size of the CentOS mirror by 50% (it would be 1.5 x current). As we continue to release new arches and support for new versions, this would cause the size of CentOS to become to large; reducing the number of people who could mirror it for us externally. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. Cent OS live cd not booting

hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. i faced following problem. 1. it boots normally but after some after booting its not showing menu. when i press alt+f2 launcher does not open. 2. when i tryed this cd in diffrent computer it stops at starting. it only shows "ready". and after that hangs up. i have some other query too. 3. may i get centos DVD. 4. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. thank you.

[ILUG-Bom] SCIM Hindi Printing Problem

I installed Ubuntu on a senior writer's machine to get him rid of Windows. He is comfortable and happy, but when he uses SCIM to type in Hindi and takes print-out, all he gets on paper is boxes.
