I can not surf the NET

Hi I am a newbie to the list and linux. Lately i installed Sarge 3.1 and when i try to surf the net from root i can but when i try to do the same from user, mozilla says "Website not found" Same with GAIM, Kopete and others. SO presently i pull up my terminal and issue the su command and from there fire mozilla to surf. Is there a way where i can surf as a normal user. I channged pppd to suid "chmod 4660 /usr/sbin/pppd" even that doesn't work. Can somebody help me here. THanks in Advance . The ones in the pc are perfect audio and rf noise sources. Embeded boards are expensive because of miniscule volumes. Their advantage is battery operations, low heat, no moving parts and compact size. Relative to their cost the performance is pathetic. 2 hard disks and formatting

Hi I have 2 hdds both 40gb. ( Say D1 and D2) I have 2 pc's (say P1 and P2) P1- new with P4,256mb ram CDR/DVD combo drive etc.and D1 is connected here P2 old IBM branded celeron 500 64 mb RAM 52x CD ROM drive BIOS does not support CD booting and D2 is connected here The P1 pc boots XP and FC3 as XP is used by my brother. Also I have installed 2 more distros on this. As the P2 pc does not have a FDD and CD boot is not possible I was not able to load any distros except ubuntu so it was lying idle for some time I removed D2 from the old PC P2 and connected in the P1 Pc The P1 Pc is detecting it as Primary master and Primary slave. Even FC3 recognises it as hdb. My problems 1.I do not remember what filesystem I have created on D2 although FC3 shows some partitions. I am unable to mount them. 2. Sometimes after booting FC3 or even Slackware when I run dmesg I get some errors of DisK_read io error 3.How do i format D2 and create partitions on the same 4.My D2 is showing as 32gb even though it is 40 gb. hi grp need to know few things. If u tried ubuntu the grub which comes has a table format , how is that made? can that be removed without compiling a new kernel? . I just want to make a cool grub splash screen and i dont want that box and those notes. one solution is to change the color of the box and the text. But itz not the correct way. Any Idea? Raj

At home we have a x86 box with gnu-linux on it and am planning to have a combo card fitted on it. The Co-Ax for the cable TV will terminate on it. From here i will want to transmit these signals to tbe bedroom where i want to install a smaller TV set. Does anyone have any idea of the options i should be looking at. Evening Fellas, Am looking to build an MP3 player based on Gnu-/linux. This would be based essentially on one of the embedded processor architectures either the MIPS or the x86. The whole issue is as follows, i have a 25x25rms amplifier at my residence and would like to have an mp3 player with an LCD-Remote Control connected to it. The building of the mp3 player is the easiest part. The tough part is finding hardware that would be the right fit. What are the boards i should be looking at?. Well i got the latest (in india) Acer Aspire 5002 with AMD Turion ML-30 processor. It rocks i also have a toshiba 1.8ghz centrino , when i compare i think AMD is a monster. though laptop comes with 256MB ram i doubled it. only draback is itz 400FSB :( ... there are some wonderful machines in international market ( i mean USofA) like HP nx6125 turion 2 ghz ... but as usual asian countries get the let over. so i think this HP machine will come in india in next 6month ( or later) abt acer also has good machine in UK and US . not in India :( i think these chaps are least bothered ( damn pissing) Abt Linux for Turion, i tried Fedora core 4 and Ubuntu( modified to my requirements ) and both are equally good. and much faster then windows for sure. and plus point Turion processor doesnot have heat problem ... anymore raj

Hello All, I am thinking about migrating to the 115 kbps r-connect internet service through a fwp. I liked the iphone's speed but it is usb and works on windows. I have a few questions. 1. According to those of you who have used reliance's fwp for r-connect on linux, what would be the best option for top speed and linux compatibility; the older one with serial cable or the iphone with usb cable or older one with usb cable? 2. Can the serial cable version be setup without drivers in kppp just like an external modem is setup? 3. Does its dialler work in the gui mode like kppp or it has to be controlled through cli only? 4. How to mount ntfs in linux FC3

Hi all, I have installed FC3 and windows 2000pro on my system, I want to access ntfs partition of windows2000 from linux. but FC3 doesnt support ntfs. So can anybody tell me how to enable the ntfs suport? for that i will need patch or module. i don't want to recompile kernel using patch so i want only module. please tell me where i will get module, any pointers for that? help Installing Ubuntu

I recently bought a HCL branded PC with 2.93 GHz, 512 MB DDR, 80GB SATA, DVD combo drive, intex speakers... I tried running a live version of Ubuntu on it, but it is not able to identify the cdrom drive. So the live version fails to load and so does the installation. problems with erasing CD-RW on samsung cd-writer

I have been trying to erase a CD-RW(moserbaer) using cdrecord utility (on kernel 2.6.11). Writing o CD-R is not an issue. To erase the disk I issued the command "cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hdd blank=all" After issuing this command it receive the following message <snip> Starting to write CD/DVD at speed 10 in real BLANK mode for single session. Debian, Fedora, SuSE, Mandrake, CentOS (RHEL clone) are a few that have AMD64 editions. I would suggest that you try the AMD64 edition of whichever 32 bit distro you are using now. Alternate Dialup Problem

Hello All, I have been experiencing problems whenever I want to use an alternate dialup isp instead of my main default one. I use Mandrake 10.1 with kppp as my dialer. After I have connected to one isp, if I disconnect and select the second isp, the connection is successfull but sites don't open up. The kppp accounts are set to delete earlier dns entries so that everytime there is a fresh entry and the firewall is also flushed but no luck. If the system is rebooted then I can use the second isp. Conclusion: Whatever isp is dialled first works, for the next, its a hit and run case with more failures than success. Any clues? Any Tips or tricks? Kmail won't fetch my email...

Hi Guys, I got fed up of hotmail and its non-threaded interface. So I created a new gmail account just for using this mailing list :P. Anyway, I enabled pop3 @ gmail and everything seems to be working fine. But there is a problem. I sent myself an email just to test whether kmail is working alright. The email was sent fine and it has landed up in my inbox. But when I asked kmail to fetch my emails, it says no new mail. I logged into the web interface of gmail and sure enough the email was there. Why wont kmail fetch that email? Any ideas? Also, is my email looking ok? I am wrapping the lines at 78. Should I change it? BTW I am using FC2 with kmail 1.6.2 -- Dinesh A. Joshi

For those who don't know, The Linux community in Bangalore - The Bangalore LUG- organizes an event every year for the past few years. So far, this event has been called "Linux Bangalore". I'd heard of this event in 2003, but was able to attend the event in 2004. You get to meet lots of techies, listen to talks, learn lessons, share knowledge, and build contacts. I feel that apart from the name and the venue, there's nothing Bangalore specific about this event - all are welcome and there's no discrimination. This year, the event promises to be focussed on FLOSS and community issues, than be limited to just Linux. Since it is the attendees and the various enthusiasts who'll benefit the most, all are invited to participate in the discussions. Hi I have been using linux since 2000. Earlier it was only Slackware but now I am quadruple booting my machine with Win XP(my brother uses this) FC3(primary distro-full install) Debian 3.1(25/4/05 build-base install will add packages as and when needed) Slackware 10.1(without KDE or Gnome but with XFCE and fluxbox but usage will be more of CLI The basic purpose of doing this was to get a taste of 3 major distributions. Everything is running fine but now what Also I want to learn programming and basic userlevel CLI tasks even maybe text editing in vi/vimor emacs. I dont know from where to start. May be a book on programming etc.I want to use linux installed on my Pc for some learning purpose. Earlier when I was new to Linux setting it up and using Linux for playing music/video/surfing were only the primary tasks I did. Any suggestions Thanks and Regards Ninad

hi there issues with communcation softwares

Hi everybody. I have a small issue with communication softwares. i was using procomm and pcplus under DOS to check the signals of the devices connected to my serial port. now in linux i use minicom but i dont find that effective. So can anyone let me know if they have used any softwares for communication with serial ports. i mean softwares like hyperterminal in windows. If yes please let me know. Windows won't forget samba password.

How can I cause Windows XP to forget the samba passwd? If I login to samba as foo and then after some time I want to re-login as bar, XP doesn't ask for the passwd. It just logs me in as foo. How can I sort of "logout" of samba? Restarting smb doesn't help. Agile Mumbai 2005 conference

Hi folks, ASCI (Agile Software Community of India) is organizing a conference on Agile methodologies in Mumabi. The details of the conference can be found at ASCI's website http://202.53.78.202/agile2005/agilemumbai/index.htm. I understand that this is a methodology conference and not a technology conference. But I think it would be helpful to the Linux hackers for the following reasons: 1. Agile and Open Source share the same philosophy 2. Techniques like short releases, code ownership, collaboration across team, developers writing unit tests, etc are quite similar to what happens in the Open Source world. 3. There are few other techniques like continuous integration, automation, pair programming, etc that could be very useful in the Open Source context. ASCI was started back at the beginning of this year to promote Agile methodologies in India. Since then we have organized two conferences, in Bangalore and in Goa. Mumbai is the third conference and the next one is planned to be held in Pune next month. We are seeking support from all Agile (and non-Agile) enthusiasts in making this conference a success. We have a fantastic line up of speakers from various organizations that practice Agile. Please do sign up for the event and help make it a success.
