AFAIK, Theo De Raadt was kicked out of the BSD group because he was considered to be very difficult to work with. "Free for All" or one of the other books that document open source mentions this. This rant against Linux sounds like a case of sour grapes. Also, it requires a special kind of personality to build a community around open source software and the ability to collaborate and inspire trust in others is essential. I get the following error when I try accessing www.ilug-bom.org.in. Other websites work fine. This meet was attended by about 60 people, mostly students of C-DAC local center. This time we experimented with a saturday meet, which got good response. Following talks and discussions were held. * DTrace in OpenSolaris -- by Sameer Sameer statred the meet with his presentation on dynamic tracing using DTrace on Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris. DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework for the Solaris Operating Environment. DTrace provides a powerful infrastructure to permit administrators, developers, and service personnel to concisely answer arbitrary questions about the behavior of the operating system and user programs. * Gaming on GNU/Linux -- by Rajeev Rajeev brought in his gaming machine (was it a computer?) to demo the latest games available for GNU/Linux platform. He explained the various technologies being used currently in the gaming industry like OpenGL, OpenAL, Cedega etc. Viewers were spellbound to see the demos of Doom3, Unreal 2004, CounterStrike. Hardware/Bios Issue: AGP Card causes memory test to hang

Ok, so maybe not the best forum, but I have seen hardware related queries, so following the precedent. Hoping someone can help me out. Hardware: motherboard: Asus ASUS A7266-MX-UAYZ with onboard Video/Lan/Sound and AGP slot. Processor: ATHLON xp 2100+ Video Card: VideoGF FX 5200 256 MB AGP card. Memory: 2 Dimms of 512 MB Each (different companies) but 400 Mhz totaling 1024 MB. Problem: The AGP Card causes the system to hang when it reaches the memory test stage. If I keep pressing "del", I can get into the bios. If I keep pressing ESC, I can get it to skip the memory test and the system comes up. If I fail to do the above, the keyboard is rendered lifeless and I have to hard boot. Without the AGP Card it works fine and the memory test takes place and system comes up OK. Any clues? KDE upgrade issue

HI, im trying to install kde 3.4 on fedora core1 system which is currently running kde 3.1 I downloaded the three required packages arts, kdebase and kdelibs. I installed arts first and then kdelibs and they got installed without any errors. But after that when i tried to install the kdebase package the configure script gave an error that kdelibs must be installed first. Do i need to do something regarding the old kde or wat??I ran the configure script of arts and kdelibs with no options except --with-qt-dir=/home/puneet/qt3.4/ option which is the path to the version of qt i wana use.. WHat coudl be the problem??? Please reply quickly, Puneet P>S> I did all this coz umbrello(UML designer) needed a beeter version of qt than i had and then after i installed qt in umbrello i got an error that kde must be compiled with this new version of kde hence i downloaded the new version of kde. IF you can suggest any other UML designer that would be really helpful.!!

Background: Was introduced to yet another PC Support vendor. I ask this of every vendor these days. "Do you support linux because I always recommend Linux to most people who ask for solutions to their many woes but the switch never materializes for lack of support by the AMC vendor. If you do, then let me know and I will send you prospective clients." At the end of the relatively long conversation, he came up with the most thought provoking comparison between linux and windows. He said, "Agreed, microsoft has many problems and is unstable etc, but you see, Microsoft Windows is like a woman, has it's problems, gets infected but still people want it, whereas Linux is a 'hijra' who cannot get a virus but still nobody wants it". I am not kidding. Those were the exact words. I was too caught up with interpreting the comparison to discuss anything else. And am still thinking, if windows is woman, linux is eunuch, who is the male in the scheme of things?. Well, it takes all kinds to make the world. Linux Training: Looking to form a group and getting an instructor to train.

Hi, A friend of mine is hoping to get some training done on Linux (from the basics to as far as he can go). But is looking at flexible timings. He has a setup of 4 machines in his office and is based in south Mumbai. The plan is to get an instructor level person to conduct the classes on weekends/weekevenings, whatever is convenient to all. If anyone is interested in hooking up (2 seats available) since one will be taken by him and one by instructor then let me know. This will also bring down the costs hopefully. First Customer Put on Linux

Hello All, Today I got my first customer to get into linux. The machine was an Intel Original GLVA with a Celeron 2 Ghz. cpu, 256 Mb RAM. The distro loaded was Mandrake 10.1. The sound device got detected smoothly and it gave the boot up music too on login. The system uses a LAN cablenet as well as a dialup (when the lan is down). I used the gui to setup the same in Mandrake. This cablenet is luckily direct with no PPPoE. The ip address was a static one and in windows, it has a domain and host name in the dns setting that is necessary. However that was a mistake to do in linux as the search domain is different from domain entry in windows. The eth0 would not connect to the net. Then I created the ppp0 connection and that too did not connect to the net. The problem was that the ppp0 picked up the dns server entry of the eth0. Both the connections were removed and first the ppp0 was setup and it went on the net smoothly. Then the eth0 was created again but this time, no names were used at all. Omly ip, subnet mask, gateway and dns-server-ip. That did the trick and the eth0 was up and running on the net. There is a very nice control on the task bar for disconnecting and reconnecting the eth0 link and that adds added safety of disconnecting the link when the user is not on the net. It reconnects successfully. Thunderbird, firefox and firestarter was added. One nice feature of the firestarter firewall is that if you leave the program running in the task bar and reboot, then on login, it asks the user to enter the root password and starts the firewall, like a reminder. There was one problem though on reboot. The sound server gave startup errors and the sound went dead. It was getting too late to investigate but It must be something about the automatic bios setting that was discussed by some members here. Its irq may be shifting??? The video player does not play VCDs now. But that is a minor issue and the cus. will use windows for multimedia for the time being. Maybe on my next visit.... What surprised me was the ease with which the cust. took to linux in one shot inspite of the various logins and password entries. I had not anticipated that. The usual way to do it is to point the system at an online package repository. Bandwidth and download limits in India cause this to be a big pain in the wallet -- no ordinary user is going to do it and many technical users will not want to. So, any solutions? A local package mirror is one, but you still have the last-mile link being a bottleneck. Update CDs that they can subscribe to, that Rony can have delivered once a month or so? Asrock MB refuses Mandrake.

Hello All, Mandrake 10.1 does not install on the Asrock 845 chipset P 4i45 GV mobo. On booting from the first CD, it gave the initial 2 boot options of direct install/upgrade or custom. Then the first loading of the kernel starts and then there is a screen with a blue title bar and a task bar saying "Welcome to Mandrake...." Thats it. The system does not move further. Even Ctrl+Alt+Del does not reboot the system. To cross check linux compatibility with this mobo, live Knoppix 3.2 was tried and it booted fine and gave me the desktop and even played mp3s from the hdd. In case this may be of any help, the first line in the knoppix boot up text messages was "PCI Device 00:f1.1 not available due to conflicts". Any clues? Hi all, I am actually a student and a GNU/Linux enthusiast. I actually, came to know about GNU/Linux in 2003 December as a GUI operating system. I was under the impression that it is just Linux(GNU/Linux) and is CUI based. I had no idea that developments had taken place. I was going through magazines like PCQUEST, DIGIT and found that DIGIT had given Redhat Linux 9.0 CD's to subscribers. Luckily one my friend was the subscriber of DIGIT and had obtained the CD. I wanted to try this out and ultimately had messed up my computer. Later on went through manuals and stuff and got it set right...Now I use Redhat Linux 9.0 My friend and I have installed Redhat Linux 9.0 in many of our friend's computers FOR FREE.... Dear Rajeev, Would it be possible for u to talk on Gaming on Linux in this meet. Thats the only reason why windows is still on my machine and many others'. I tried wine and cedega, though cedega was comparatively better, i never got the games to work like they did on windows. I also tried a game ported to linux by loki games, again the sound was not working though everthing else was really great once i got it to work (after invoking the game with an LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 2.4). Maybe my machine is not good enough, its a PIII 1GHz with 256MB RAM and 64MB Nvidia GeForce2 MX400 card. Really looking forward to ur talk (whenever it is) Anand.

I am running Debian testing/unstable on a IBM 390X laptop. I have a Tata LG LSP-345 fixed wireless phone. I have procured the (serial port) data cable from Tata Indicom directly because I was having intermittent problems using a cable from lamington road. I googled and found this link: http://btbytes.com/2004/11/tata-indicom-linux-lg-lsp345.html I copied the wvdial.conf to my machine. It worked for some days but then suddenly stopped working. This is what I get: root@bryonia:~# wvdial tata --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ --> Sending: ATQ0 --> Re-Sending: ATZ --> Modem not responding. root@bryonia:~# Need I add that I can get online frm winduhs pretty effortlessly. Tata ofcourse provides no support for linux. Has anyone ever done a comparison exercise for printer running costs? Some time back I had googled, Dot Matrix Printer: 10 paise per page Laserjet: Rs. 0.5/page Inkjet Printers: Rs. 2/page The cost of the Dot Matrix printing is further reduced because of the low tech and highly reliable reinking costs. Till date i have never been successful in getting a inkjet cartridge re-inked (though only tried the hp deskjet 670C). Does anyone have more reliable estimates on the cost comparisons? Have you been successfully and consistently reinked an inkjet cartridge thus reducing the cost per page? if yes, then which brand/model is the most "re=ink" friendly. (mdk9.2, win XP pro) samba 3 configuration problem

USB (or PCI) Linux WiFi NIC with Monitor mode

Hi All, I am looking for a USB Wi-Fi NIC interface, so that I can connect to a wireless network, on a PC running Linux. (Suse 9.2, Kernal 2.6 i believe ) I have found the URL below, http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Linux.Wireless.drivers… which lists a lot of options, but I was wondering if anyone on this list can suggest from their experience, a good USB piece of hardware, that is relatively easy to install. My most important requirment, is to be able to use ethareal, to sniff packets on the WLAN, so I am looking for a driver that supports monitor or promouscious mode. Ethreal seems to have problems with this on WinXP, with most common wifi nic drivers, and so recommends using Linux, therefore my quest to find a device. I dont have any PCI slots free, but if anyone has had good experience with a PCI card, then I may even free up a slot, instead of going the USB way. Thanks Shahed.

Xandros 3.0 and Toshiba Tecra 8100: does not read bootable CD #1

I consider this a strange issue. Trying to install Xandros 3.0 OCE on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 (P3 600, 256 MB, DVD Rom). Does not Boot from the CD. or a DVD. The CD Works fine on other systens, Other OS CDs work fine on this system (Tecra 8100). Existing system was Rh9.0. Building RPMs

Hello All, Can anyone post a note on building rpms from source rpms? I have looked on the net, even the rpm website but I goes a little bouncer. I have even created an rpm folder with some subfolders called BUILD RPMS SOURCE ... as per a site's instructions but I am not able to get any rpm --rebuild command to work. It gives an error of command not found. I use Mandrake 10.1 and its package manager shows no such package 'rpm-build' or 'rpm*' even in the full list. What is this part about setting environment variables for the rpm building? One site say that the source rpm has to be installed first and then it is rebuilt. Its all confusing. The government has started distributing CDs containing Tamil-language versions of various open-source applications, including the Firefox browser, the OpenOffice.org productivity suite and the Columba e-mail client. It plans to freely distribute 3.5 million copies of the CD to Tamil speakers worldwide, according to R.K.V.S. Raman, a researcher at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, a Bangalore-based organization involved in the production of the CD. Open Source Software In India, seeking avenues for growth There's no standing still in a competitive global market--just check out the tech action in Bangalore. Raman told ZDNet UK on Wednesday that the CDs have been in considerable demand following a newspaper-and-television advertising campaign last month. "We have had a tremendous response to this (initiative)," he said. "In the first two weeks of the campaign we got about 100,000 hits daily on the Web site offering CDs, and about 2,000 to 3,000 downloads (of Tamil-language applications). We have already sent out around 50,000 CDs and have a backlog of 35,000." Once the requested CDs have been sent out, more copies will be distributed with computer magazines and newspapers, according to Raman. Even the president of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has taken an interest in the project and earlier this month met the team involved in the production of the CD. The next stage of the project is to distribute CDs containing applications in Hindi, the national language of India. This stage will be launched on June 21 and likely will involve more than the 3.5 million CDs earmarked for the current phase, said Raman. Eventually, the government plans to release CDs in all of the 22 official languages of India. Raman believes open-source software has two main advantages for the Indian population--it is relatively inexpensive and it can be modified fairly easily. "We are sometimes not comfortable with Western user interfaces--they don't make sense in our culture, particularly for rural people who haven't had much access to technology. If we want to modify the software we have to have access to the code," he said. The Indian government's decision to ship free software in this way likely will be a blow to Microsoft, which plans to release a low-cost version of Windows in India soon. Microsoft originally hoped to release its Windows XP Starter Edition--a low-cost, feature-restricted version of Windows XP--by the end of March, but it's now aiming for a June release. (7 Comments) [Read More/Comment] The goal of Anjuta DevStudio is to provide a truely customizable and extensible IDE framework and at the same time provide the basic implementations of common development tools. libanjuta is the framework that realizes the Anjuta IDE plugin framework and Anjuta DevStudio realizes many of the common development plugins. Anjuta branches Anjuta currently has two main branches, ANJUTA_1_2_0 and HEAD. The ANJUTA_1_2_0 branch is stable branch and corresponds to anjuta-1.x release series. The HEAD branch is the anjuta-2.x releases and is the latest development series. Anjuta 2.x development series has new extensible plugin architecture and all the plugins have been ported to this new plateform. The libanjuta interface defines all the IDE APIs and is used to write anjuta plugins. In addition, it also provides many utility classes. Following are the major milestones that we will attempt to reach by the estimated dates given. There will be smaller releases in-between, mainly stablization and bugfix releases. openoffice 2.0 beta (.ods) format

OO 2.0 beta has adopted the .ods format whereas I just converted all the excel files to .sxc!!!!!! Govt. not promoting linux

Hello All, I came across this article in the Asian Age about microsoft teaming up with the Uttaranchal Govt. to provide PCs with starter XP packs for all the Govt. employees on easy loans. Microsoft is also talking to other states to push its product. It is even trying to tie up with HCL and BSNL to introduce a joint offering for boradband users. Does this mean killing linux support??? The www.asianage.com site says that it will not open without IE. my pc.conf : AMD64 2800+,Asus K8S-MX the motherboard has an onboard ethernet controller: SiS 190 / 191 anybody with this m/b and managed to get ethernet working??? I tried gentoo-64-(univ.cd),Ubunto-64 but couldnt find aprop. drivers.. SiS190.c is there in kernel sourcetree.. upto 2.6.5 but i couldnt see it after that.. I installed gentoo anyway.. and also FC3 (recompiled kernel 2.6.11.11) .. but some how I feel its not as fast as it shud be.. sadly though, winXP runs decently fast.. Many other device manufacturers are using embedded Linux (DLink, Linksys, Maxtor NAS devices come to mind) and they don't mention Linux either. Xandros 3 Stinks :(

Dear Friends, I wasted 2 evenings trying to setup and use this linux joke called Xandros 3 that came free with this month's chip cd. Are they trying to promote linux or get people pissed off and avoid linux? Its lilo does not integrate with the existing grub. Tried out all combinations of grub script but it would always give kernel panic. Finally after reloading it and creating a bootable floppy, it finally booted from the floppy only to show what a disgrace it is to linux and its earlier version 1. Its dialup does not work even on an external modem. (Version 1 worked even on an internal modem). The xine player hanged and got stuck on my screen.
