libtool versioning

I'd spoken about libtool versioning at a lug meet a long time ago. This will just be few lines on it. libtool libraries on linux are of the form: libname.so.X.Y.Z where 'name' is the name of the library, and X, Y and Z are whole numbers. Let's deal with Y first since that's the easiest. When a library author increments the Y number by 1, it signifies an internal change in the library that does not affect users of the library. These would generally be things like changing an algorithm or variable names or documentation, but not touching the API. Now the other two. The first number - X - is the library version. A library author increments this number by one when any of the following occurs: - A new feature (including API) was added - An existing feature (including API) was dropped - An existing feature (including API) was changed Of the above, the first is backwards compatible, the second is not, and the third may be (using default values for new parameters for example). For case 3, the new library may be source compatible but not binary compatible, suggesting that any code that uses the library must be recompiled to work, but not rewritten. For case 2, any code that used the dropped feature must be rewritten. For all three cases, code that uses the library may need to be recompiled even if it doesn't make use of the changed features because the virtual pointer table may have changed (specific to Compiled OO languages). libtool versioning helps tell library users what to do. Everytime X is incremented, it suggests that code may have to be rewritten or recompiled. To identify which, we look at the last digit - Z. The number Z is the library API's age, ie, how far back is it compatible. So, a few examples. You compile against: libfoo.so.3.0.0 New version released: libfoo.so.3.1.0 Action needed: none New version released: libfoo.so.4.0.1 Action needed: may need recompile/relink (4-1 == 3) New version released: libfoo.so.5.0.2 Action needed: may need recompile/relink (5-2 == 3) New version released: libfoo.so.4.0.0 Action needed: may need rewrite/recompile (4-0 > 3) Let the major library version number that we compiled against be M. In the above cases, to determine whether a recompile is required or a rewrite is required, we check that X-Z <= M <= X Here's something that I use to remind me: # +1 : 0 : +1 == new interface that does not break old one. # +1 : 0 : 0 == removed/changed an interface. Breaks old apps. # ? : +1 : ? == internal changes that doesn't break anything. Finished :) For more information, run "info libtool" -- Real Users are afraid they'll break the machine -- but they're never afraid to break your face.

Problem starting GNOME

Hi all, Recently I happened to add an application to be started whenever I login to the system on an RHEL ES system. This I did by using Start Menu | Preferences | More Preferences | Sessions and startup programs on a GNOME Desktop. It didn't start on a KDE Desktop even at that time. All was fine and the application used to popup when I start login as desired user. Then later on I stopped the startup of the application by removing the corresponding entry at the same location. But then whenever I login as the concerned user I am unable to start GNOME but can only login to KDE (Both are installed). Root(hda0,1) should be root (hd0,0) for Win200. where hd0 means the first HDD and the partition no is the next fig, so if Win200 is /dev/hda1 then the entry should be "0" in the grub. similarly the other OS entries must also be corrected. Dear All: I have uploaded a series of high-resolution scanned maps and satellite imagery of Mumbai City, Suburbs, and the Metropolitan Region, in the spirit of open geo-data. These are free for viewing, downloading, and sharing. This archive contains the Bombay City Guide series conducted by the Survey of India from 1929-69, which I obtained in the University of Chicago Library a few years ago, along with some other regional plans of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and Bombay Municipal Corporation, and high-resolution composite satellite imagery of Mumbai from the NASA Landsat 7 series. You can view and download these maps at: http://www.crit.org.in/archives/maps You can view the images at different sizes, and if you want to download them, simply right-click on the image. To download the originals, view at original size and right-click. Please note that the file sizes are very large, between 5-25 MB and will require a fast connection to view and download properly. Hi list, I am using Mandrake 10.1 Official on multiboot system. After installing Mandrake 9.2 (yes 9.2 NOT 10.1) on un-partitioned space. Windows stop booting. Since as per default GRUB setting, it should show non *Linux OS also in Boot menu. But, here it is not showing any other OS. NOTE: Boot loader might be installed on MBR (instead of first non windows partition)? Background: Using Monit, to monitor mail servers and alerts are sent to orange and bpl mobile phones using the email-to-sms feature. Drawback: Unreliable: Possible Solution: Monitor Remotely from local server and instead of sending email to sms, switch over to SMS-to-SMS. While going the official route would work out expensive, I plan to use the reliance phone where my SMSes are free. Now, how do I go about doing this setup. Ok, so a data cable will be required and purchased. Then what? The system is Redhat 9 and the mail server (if it matters) is postfix. The alert system is Monit. rconnect monitoring in Debian

any body using relieance rconnect to connect to net. i am running a debian box here, and i just got there 650 plan where you pay flat Rs.650 and get always on connection with 1Gb of download limit. the problem is how do i know how much have i downloaded? i contacted there support they said, they don't have any info about this. infact once the guy said that its users who will have to keep track how much they have downloaded, i don't understand if they themselves don't know whether i have crossed 1Gb or not, how will they bill me. anyways, so i have decided to keep a track of myself. i am not using kppp where i know how it can be done. how do i monitor when i am using rconnect?

Alinux aka Peanut Linux

aLinux is a new name of what was until recently known as Peanut Linux. The originally small distribution has grown large and "Peanut isn't a Peanut no-more, it's evolved into something, well, larger, a watermelon... Of course it will be the same, just a different name. Changes in aLinux 12.2 are mainly xitami rebuilt, mimes added to that, and mplayer-plug, 'apt' updated to name change. RPM updated to now show a vendor, this can be over ridden in /usr/lib/rpm/macros; as well as email address. Updated RPMs popt from 1.8.1 - 1.9.1 I believe. Some other stuff updated, can't remember it all... oh yeah, kdenetwork, updated to support wireless networking... umm... think brain think... lol... Internal Modem problem

Hi all, i have installed PCTEL internal modem in my Redhat enterprise linux dut it is unable to work ,,it works fine in WINDOWS OS though it detect and showing in hwcong file but still when i activate using GUI it bumps me error. So on windows xp their so called "engineer" gave me the pacenet dialer and connected me to internet with 1) my username 2) A-C was "net9online" and "service-name" was cable I called pacenet-call centre and they said they cannot create @linuxuser for me as i use 25kbps plan. I think connection must work on linux because it works on windows, I guess the problem might be in these 2 things 1) it sometimes connects with PAP and sometimes CHAP and both methods fail to authenticate, what should i use to connect to server, and how? 2) Problem might also be in kernel or normal mode pppoe , because i dont know the difference Now I'm on linux and connected to internet by the router way http://172.50.1.1 , but can't hold it for 24*7

Thanks everyone the connection is up not on usb but on lan card with cross wire (stupid of me should have done this first). Now I'm at the mercy of mtnl ;-) to see if the connection stays up...... Derwyn

Here's the reply that D-link guys sent me in regards to the MTNL DSL modem, the only way to get it working on linux is to do it vire a hub and ethernrt card. And ironically this modem uses a linux kernel and other gnu stuff in the firmware. Hi friends, I also had a similar problem, but mine is when I wrote a plugin for proftp to execute any command on a remote machine...Proftp is running as root, and sets the ownership and privileges of the user requesting the execution. However, when it runs a shell script (or anything that forks a terminal, the program run under it gets executed as root. the temporary workaround I found for it is to su into user to a terminal, and run the command...something like: su <user.group> -c "<command>" but again, it is not a good solution, it forks 2 terminals instead of 1. Is there a better way to set the ownership of the user on a shell script when executed by a user? I've tried by playing around with the MTNL modem on suse / Fedora. Suse through yast detects it as a modem but no luck in getting it up.... Fedora tried adsl-setup with still no luck Using dhcp on the ethernet card. The modem driver in suse is DSL-502 Has anyone suceeded in doing this MTNL/Tri band connection on Linux.... If no has anyone spoken to MTNL as to how to get this connection up on linux... The stupid linesmen have no idea at all..... Derwyn

I would like to know what are sms gateways. How do people at Indian Idol process incoming sms's. Is any special hardware required ? What is a Gsm modem ? If I ask Airtel or Orange to provide me a gateway, will they give me some special hardware or a sim card ? I need all this info for my project. I will be using gnokii for this. If not found, the email should be forwarded to the hosted website where all users are configured. Similarly for both domain. I think SMART HOST should do what I want, but not sure how to define smarthost for 2 domains on a single local mail server... Hope I am able to put the picture correct. Thank you. Vai

i have a server. i want two domains on that server,suppose xyz.com abc.com i configured /etc/named.conf zone "xyz.com" { type master; file "xyz.com.zone"; forwarders {} ; }; zone "abc.com" { type master; file "abc.com.zone"; forwarders {}; }; i configured /var/named too abc.com.zone xyz.com.zone but whenever i dig abc.com it gives me the answer 1 but at the same time if i dig xyz.com it gives me answer 0. only one domain responds me at a time can plz someone help me i want sendmail to send as well as recieve mails using the two domains plz can anybody tell me how to do that ________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Hello All, We have 2 domains hosted on 2 diff. servers in US. We have 2 offices (Mumbai, Nagpur). If any mumbai users sends an email to any nagpur user, the sendmail bounces the email back saying that no such user exists. I want to setup sendmail such that if it is not able to find the user on the local system it should fwd the email to the hosted server (US) so that the email will be delivered to the nagpur user's mailbox which can then be fetched by the Nagpur server's fetchmail. I need to do this for both domains. How can I set this up. Any advice & pointers are deeply thanked. Thanks Vai

hi, no its not dhcp, earlier when they started the router that they were giving was in pppoe mode, and it was required for us to use something like rp-pppoe to dial out. but now they have come out with this new dlink modem (DsL-502T), which has a static ip given to it. this modem also has a lan side ip which is 192.168.1.1 so either we can give our machines a static ip set default route through the box's ip. In windows it better to leave the setting to dhcp.

Here we submit some examples of three such alternative Free Software programs which can be used for technical education. * (1) Operating System: Windows v/s GNU/Linux Because of the software tools prescribed in the colleges, and also a general lack of awareness of Free Software options, most colleges use Microsoft Windows based operating system. Yet, in terms of technological features, stability, learning possibilities, the GNU/Linux is increasingly being recognised as the best available globally. It is the best suited for any educational institution. Students can not only use it, but also can study its source code to understand its internal workings. Likewise, they can easily get in touch with the many volunteers who have put together this amazing set of tools, and collaborate internationally to created more suitable products and also hike their own skill-sets. But many of the colleges use or have started adopting GNU/ Linux, starting with the server room, where it is well known for its stability and security now it has entered our labs and desktops. * (2) Simulation: Matlab v/s Octave Matlab is used in communication and electronics lab. Matlab for an individual license for use in a university (academic use) costs $500. Any college will have to buy a minimum of 25 licenses. This means shelling out Rs.537,500. Octave, which is a simulation software written by university professors. This usually comes, along and as part of, the GNU/Linux Operating System. The advantage to students is that they don't have to buy a limited student version to use at home. They can use Octave both at lab and at home. SciLab? is another Free Software competitor for Matlab. It uses sophisticated algorithms to analyse data and produce aesthetic graphics. NG-SPICE is another GPLd Circuit Simulator which is based on the University of Berkley's Spice Version 3f5. * (3) Office software's: MS Office v/s Open Office Currently, we all used Microsoft Word to submit our project documents for review and for other academic purposes. Recent technological developments now mean that we have Open Office which is as good as Microsoft Office and has the same, if not better, features. Microsoft Office in fact lacks some features like PDF (Portable Document Format) support, compatibility with older versions of Microsoft Office, lack a vector drawing application, etc. Open Office gives you everything starting from a word processor, to presentation software to PDF generator. It is fully compatible with Microsoft Office -- so already existing data in those formats can be used. Don't you think it's the right time to save money and enhance efficiency of technological education in our country? The above are just examples. There are many such software programs from which the students can benefit. We hope the university understands the urgency and the need. We would be happy to give the university any information/help that is needed. Currently, India has a wide range of volunteer GNU/Linux support groups, a list of which can be found at http://wikiwikiweb.de/LugsList * (4) Computer Networks Subject Teaching: Ethreal, tcpdump, NS2 etc We use the above mentioned tools for the teaching of Computer Networks and Data Communication subjects. There are a number of other GNU GPLed tools which can be used in a number of other labs for teaching and learning. * (5) Content Management Systems: Drupal, PHP-Nuke etc For building websites and info portals for students to make online learning possible. In the world of online forums, Free Software have a number of free options. You could well imagine the impact that the accelerated spread of such easily-reachable and usable tools would have, not just on the engineers of tomorrow, but on the wider Indian society as a whole. [OT] MTNL Tri Band ADSL equipment config

Fellow list members, The Khar(W) CO exchange informed me that they will be bringing in my ADSL connection by end of March and left a form to be filled up and submitted at the CO. The form has an item that refers to CPE equipment - either rented from MTNL or customer owned. I asked the lines man what exactly does the CPE mean and he was not sure if it would be my D-Link DI604 router or something else. Therefore, the query to this list. The ADSL setup that I have seen within the SBC/Ameritech (US midwest) network is as shown in the fig. below. The 2W/UTP from CO is terminated on a DSL/Tel. line splitter. The splitter has one RJ11 (for phone) and one RJ45 (for the DSL router OR the NIC in the computer) connector. ________ 2W UTP|DSL/Tel.| 2W -------|Splitter|------ from |________| UTP to Tel. set CO | | RJ45 to WAN port on DSL Router Hopefully, some of you on this list have already got this service and you are able to share some info on the CPE/router configs. Is the MTNL ADSL connection setup similar to the above fig.? If not, what does it look like? Also, how is the IP connection established i.e. DHCP, Static IP, or PPPoE? TIA. Regards, Arun Khan

Progress So Far

Dear Friends, In my experiment to load the edumorphix from the grub of the existing Redhat, I have now been able to boot that partition hda12 using this script in my grub.conf file.... title Debian GNU/Linux (with LILO) root (hd0,11) kernel (hd0,11)/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.25-lck1 root=(hd0,11)/ The trouble area was the last line which was earlier root=/dev/hda12, which I tried with root=(hd0,11)/ and it was accepted. However after the initial startup messages, I get a kernel panic message. Any ideas? Does debian panic when it faces windows users? :-) Thanks for helping and Regards, Rony.

As a student, I plead to every university, to adopt, encourage and spread the use of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS). The benefits are clearly far-more significant than cost savings (which of course is a huge motivating factor). The quality of software reviewed and worked on by virtually the entire developer community of the world is definitely at least world-class if nothing else. It is possible to save on costs with $0 priced closed source software often termed as freeware, but the limited resources of the single developer or the couple of developers behind the software makes future of such software bleak. Compared to that, software released under an open source license, helps user as well as developer involvement to happen as deeply and transparent as no other licensing model can support. As the letter includes the following (stripped) statement "...Octave, which is simulation software written by University professors. This usually comes with the GNU/Linux Operating System." which clearly shows that professors of universities elsewhere have contributed to the solution of making quality software available to the students and colleges alike under a license that welcomes further contributions to improve the project virtually endlessly. As a personal experience, I often have used open source alternatives whenever acquiring the proprietary packages meant depending on the lab assistant to provide the CD for illegal copying or genuinely going out and shelling out all those huge wads of cash for functionality that was already at my disposal with added advantage of continuing development and a long-life (of the software). As universities use and recommend use of open source software,rate of development is bound to grow with more and more students using the same version of software both at college and home (no limited cheap "student" edition which are "cheap" imitations with myriad "limitations"). Also professors' contributions in the form of bug reports, bug fixes, new functionality patches and their work in increasing awareness about the benefits of using open source software would help improve quality of free software to an enormous extent. I found one ( I hope ..) just press ESC key , when the grub screen appears IT would hopefully ask whether to exit the graphics mode and move to text mode.. Hi all, I am a newbie to Linux. I am writing this mail hoping that it will save few hours work for someone somewhere. In this mail I am describing method used by me for setting up Hathway cable-internet on my home PC using usb-interface & Debian Linux. My Linux box- AMD Athlon XP1800+ 128 MB / 80 GB Multiboot - Debian Sarge (from PCQ Dec2004) / XP / 98SE Kernel - 2.6.8 Desktop - KDE 3.2 Hathway cable internet using Motorola Surfboard 5100 & USB cable interface Location - Mumbai, India 1. Information required before you start- (a) IP address assigned by Hathway (like 203.212.xxx.xx) (b) Subnet mask (255.255.255.0) (c) Gateway address (like 203.212.xxx.xx) (d) DNS addresses (like 203.212.xxx.xx) All of the above should be available in the subscription letter issued by Hathway. 2. Your kernel should be compiled with support for USBNET & CDCEther drivers. (Debian distribution by PCQ-Dec2004 have these precompiled). 3. Connect the cable modem to USB port of your machine & boot the machine. 4. The OS will detect the modem as ethernet device as "eth0".(I do not have any ethernet card, else this may change) You can check the same by "dmesg" command. Excerpt from dmesg on my machine is as follows- <quote> eth0: register usbnet at usb-0000:00:07.3-1, CDC Ethernet Device usbcore: registered new driver usbnet <unquote> 5. From start menu > system > networking (or from command line "network-admin") get network setup window. You need superuser password. - Click Add - connection type = ethernet - Configuration = manual - Feed IP, Subnet & Gateway - Finish with creating new connection - Enter DNS addresses in corresponding tab window. 6. You have finished the job ! 7. Check with "ifconfig eth0" & "netstat -r" if network interface has correct values & routing table is showing gateway correctly. RHCE is the premiere cert. as far as Linux is concerned. Its the second toughest IT cert., after the CCIE. Ofcourse, you also have options of the vendor-neutral LPI and SuSE's new cert. But these are online exams, and do not test your practical skills as much the RHCE does. Needless to add, only certs will get you nowhere. How to DualBoot Debian/RHEL

Dear Friends, I tried out the EduMorphix live CD and after that I installed it in my HDD as it is a Debian GNU distro and I want to try it out. Everything went OK but for safety, I did not install the LILO and planned to setup dual boot in the RHEL grub loader. I even visited the site for instructions on dual booting multiple linux distris. Below is the details of my system. As per the site's instructions, I copied 3 files from /boot of debian to /boot of RHEL. There is no initrd-xxxx.img file though. These are the 3 files in /boot of the debian in /dev/hda12 config-2.4.25-lck1 vmlinuz ....This is an executable file vmlinuz-2.4.25-lck1 This is my grub.conf in RHEL in /dev/hda8 # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. I would like to know, my RHEL's /boot is on /dev/hda8 but it is shown as hd0,7 not hd0,8 in grub.conf. My Debian is on /dev/hda12 (from fdisk), so using the same analogy, I made (hd0,11) but it detects it as an 82 partition and cannot mount it. I don't have any ext2 partitions in my system. Hello, I have a strange problem, i have configured a proxy server with squid(transparent), also i have some iptables rules flowing. I use an 64kbps Internet connection from my cable operator, he terminates a cat5 cable at my premises, i have two lan cards on my redhat linux 9 box, eth0 is my internal LAN and eth1 is where i connect to internet. I have static ips for both eth0 and eth1. My problem is that whenever i download/upload any file it takes a very long time and stops responding, is it that i have to open some ports, or is it the problem of my ISP. Thankyou in advance.
