Hello Luggers, I have a setup of single box running WhiteBox Linux 3.0 with squid & iptables. The iptables setup is :- i forward all incomming connections to 80 port from local users to squid proxy server with rules: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -s ! 192.168.0.1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.1:3128 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 192.168.0.1 -j SNAT --to 192.168.0.1 iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 192.168.0.2 -i eth0 -o eth0 -p tcp --dport 8080 -j ACCEPT I have allowed localhost and 192.168.0.0/24 network in squid acl config.Now my problem is that when every any host tries to browse any site the following error is shown by squid If i hit http://www.yahoo.com/ in browser i get ========================================== ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While trying to retrieve the URL: / The following error was encountered: Invalid URL Some aspect of the requested URL is incorrect. linux server crashed .......why?

Very high latency, and low bandwidth utilisation with even moderate number of users connected or distance beyond 25 mtrs (i have done some bit of testing). I prefer to carry a cross & straight cable any day (most offices have a lan point within reach). The 11G thingy is anything but standard for now. Wireless lan is great for experiments with mobile voice apps etc.- not daily use. Me thinks it will be 2 yrs before wireless lans become reliable and useful.By then the current crop of peripherals will be hazardous pollutants. However 11g on a point to point link over a distance of a few kilometers is very good - 4 to 24 Mbps.

His response time to compaints at my father and 2 friends was about half day. Zenith depends on its dealers to provide first line of support and get it to zenith for serious problems. Anyway, no components are manufactured in india, all come from abroad. Saswata, Toshiba-IBM-Acer could be good options to look at. I can vouch for the in-capability and unprofessionalism at Zenith to be able to cater to customer problems. As for Zenith, he just gets the whole laptop in a CKD form from Taiwan to his plant in goa, gets out the screw drivers and assembles the same. These laptops are most probably from the same stables as your Gateway/HIS/Low end Taiwanese manufacturers stables. Stay away from these taiwanese look a likes since its less on the quality that worries me.......but largely its Zeniths approach to after sales service. Also, support for Gnu-Linux on these laptops would surely be and added benefit. Hi All, Something to mention about RHCE. As someone mentioned earlier 'it's nice to prepare for RHCE' but after getting certified I think the market is still not prepared for a RHCE. For eg. I completed RHCE on August 2004 but still waiting for a good option. There is no adv. in the newspaper Appointments asking for RHCE. So what's the good in going for so much effort. -- Subhamoy

I thought laptops were a part of the pc division of ibm sold to the chineese. Don't use dell. You are dpendent on dell to service you. Unless you are a large corporate, you will need to go down on knees and beg for service. Dell does not support linux on laptops. Hp and ibm you can get service from multiple support centers and they officially sell laptops with linux preloaded. The linux loaded laptops are cheaper by at least 7k. Acer is also good, cheap and supports linux. So does toshiba - yesterday's advt 50k or so. Have a look at zenith laptops. Their quality is suprisingly good. Hi linuxers, I am a newbie to networking and am keen to learn networking in linux. The only resource i have is a single computer.Is it possible to setup and test firewalls and mail servers and other servers only using a single comp using the loopback address.Or can i try using two network cards on a single comp? Can I assign two ip address to a single ethernet interface.Please let me know if i can learn using a single comp as i cannot afford to join any course or purchase another comp to learn it. The power pc cpus provide a range of watts/mips combinations which beat intel cpus hands down on both counts and can be used in small embedded stuff all the way upto large clusters - running GNU/Linux. Hello, Now here a lot of people may ask why there are two projects with the same goal ... the thing is that the DotGNU people earlier have tried to merge the two projects together but all they got were verbal volleys from our very favourite Miguel de Icaza. The main problem at the moment is that the Mono guys (read Novell) doesn't want to have Mono under a Free Software license and they also recently changed their library licensing from LGPL to MIT's X11 license to make it more unrestrictive. The reality is much more complicated than that. Both teams have invested heavily in their own stacks, and neither group is willing to throw away they work that they have produced. To that mix, you can add the licensing piece, which has two elements: * Novell licenses the Mono source code for proprietary applications, very much in the same way that Qt, MySQL and Berkeley DB are relicensed, because they allow us to fund the work of Mono while still contributing it to the free software world. It would be ideal if all software wrote itself and we had many more contributors working for free, but today thanks to this licensing model we are able to fund 25 developers to work full time on Mono. * The .NET technologies are a source of great debate in the open source world, and adding to the mix the fears that people have over the GPL and the LGPL makes things worse. The particular problem is that there is room for "interpretation" in the case of the GNU LGPL about what a "derivative works" is in the presence of an OO library. If you make a subclass of a Mono library and override a method, is it a "derivative work"? Lets say: class MyApp : Window { ... } Reasonable people will have different opinions. Now, the matter is more complex since it is not about a given lawyer opinion. The problem is that every contributor has the right to interpret what "derivative works" means. Each one is entitled to his opinion, and it means that proprietary developers would risk having their source violate the license. The choices were to invent a new license, or pick something trusted, so we decided to go with the license that gives you the most freedom to maximize adoption and minimize fear. Mono is about brining new software to the Linux world, and bringing ISVs to Linux is something we consider very important. They also plan to sell Mono to companies under proprietary licenses if they want to. Talking about technical issues, DotGNU is faster than Mono as Mono is self hsoting (written in C# itself) and Mono also has a very weird approach towards implementing the Windows.Forms thingy ... The speed issue is incorrect. The MONO VM is among the fastest VMs out there, we are now close to matching the Microsoft.NET one as we have been working on very advanced optimizations based on SSA: SSAPRE, Arrays Bound Check elimination and in general our JIT has been tuned during two and a half years. DotGNU today has a tuned interpreter, but a tuned native code generator is better. You might be referring to the speed of the C# compiler, but here you are comparing apples versus oranges, let me explain why: * The PNet compiler is not a complete C# 1.0 compiler. One day, it will get there, but it is not there today. Speed wise, they do not implement definite assignment, which is a very computationally expensive operation, so it is easy to be fast if you do not flag every error or every warning. * Mono's C# compiler is not only C# 1.0 compliant, but implements about 70% of the C# 2.0 stuff today, including generics which on its own took a year to develop and tune. * Mono's C# compiler *can* be made faster, and even match the speed of cscc if you precompile all your assemblies with all optimizations like this: for i in $prefix/lib/mono/gac/*/*dll; do mono --aot -O=all $a done Do the same for mcs.exe they have done it using Wine whereas DotGNU only needs X to run Windows.Forms What Mono seems to me at the moment is that it's just a C# development environment for GNU/Linux and doesn't intend to be 100% compatible with MS .Net ... they are trying to push GTk# instead of Windows.Forms ... who'll use GTk# if Windows.Forms works perfectly ? As DotGNU's implementation of Windows.Forms is incomplete, and so is Mono's new implementation. You can not run any existing commercial application with either of them. Both will mature, but you wont be able to show me any commercial app running on either today. We are working on a new implementation of Windows.Forms, that follows the same approach the DotGNU people took. There are four full-time developers working on it so we will soon have something ready for production use. Now, I do believe that Windows.Forms has many flaws, specially for open source software as it does not work well with translation to different languages nor do the applications "just-work" in different languages like Gtk# applications do. This is important to support open source programs that work in many languages. We consider Windows.Forms to be important to bring Windows developers to Linux, but our path to independence is really using a toolkit that came out of the open source world and works well with other open source efforts. Witness the effort of Gnome India and how well it supports every script available, or how it supports Hebrew and Arabic without changing a line in the software. Windows.Forms just can not cope with this. far as DotGNU is concerned, GTk# or any free software libs can be easily made to work with DotGNU's Portable .Net. The fact that Gopal V, one of the major contributors to the DotGNU project ported the Portable .Net to the Encore Simputer in 3 hours flat on Linux Bangalore/2004 this time bears testimony of the portability issue. DotGNU support for Gtk# will definitely mature in the future, and I wish them good luck, but they are nowhere the stability or completeness of Mono. They can screenshot applications, but they wont be able to run the more complex apps like F-Spot, Beagle, MonoDevelop or even Monodoc. As for portability, porting an interpreter is very easy. Barely anything more than "configure; make; make install". In fact, you should be able to run Mono on the Encore Simputer as well, since we support the ARM processor in our interpreter. We are now working on a JIT engine for the StrongARM, so that will give you also a nice performance boost. While I don't intend to demean Mono in any way, I dislike their attitude towards the Freedom aspect in general and the DotGNU project in particular. (Rhys Weatherley and others have relicensed DotGNU code to Mono under their MIT's X11 license but the reverse has not happened till date). The DotGNU project needs our help and it's time we got our facts right and decided whom we should support. I would not have replied, but "its time we got our facts right" annoys me, because your post is miss-informed and far from having the facts right. What you have heard is a bunch of half-facts. You are wrong about that. DotGNU has taken large chunks of Mono code under the MIT X11 and distributes it as part of their runtime (RegularExpressions, XmlSerialization) both which are very complex pieces of code. They also ship our class libraries for any high-level features, so they tend to be behind Mono. Good luck, Miguel.

RHCE doubts Linux networking resource advice

There's no use becoming an RHCE the usual way...go thru dumps...! You wont find any dumps although...! I'am an RHCT.....i got 85 % in the exam but was not granted an RHCE coz i didnt get 70% in the RHCE part I gave the exam on RH 9.0 so there must have been massive changes since then..! The fun is in preparing for RHCE and not giving it...dont worry abt losing money OR failing...be prepared to loose it the first time...and my bet is that u would atleast fare well if not with a high score..! The catch is that if u have a good hands on exp in the industry in a live env...RHCE is a simple exam if not...then u would have work really really hard..! RHCE has not much value if u cant answer interview questions..! As for the question from one of our members as to whether we could learn networking with one machine...well yes..! Use a PC emulator...with bridged OR host networking...! VMWARE and BOSCH are two popular ones..! Take a cable net connection and u'll definitely get a big LAN to sniff arnd..! Somehow after restart its X11 did not function so I put in the RHEL CD1 and reloaded it without selecting any packages and no hdd formatting except delete the new Mandrake partition. It loaded smoothly and I found my system intact but the modem would not get detected. So the modem was uninstalled using rpm -e package_name. Then the rpm was reinstalled. Now the KPPP (with its existing settings) opens up the websites and email without going through the ritual of first starting 'Network Device Control'. This is strange but I am happy. Regards, Rony.

Hathway under Fedora Core 3

Hi, I am going to install Fedora Core 3. My knoppix system detected my cable modem (Askey Cable Modem, provided by hathway for cable internet) properly and configured it right. I have plugged the modem is USB and no etthernet or lan link is provided. It is correctly dtected as a network adapter/device in Knoppix and Windows XP. However, suse linux 9.1 personal detects it as a dial up modem rather than a network device. Will it work in Fedora? Any tips/known issues? Thank You, Rohan.

IF U have difficulty reading this mail copy the entire contents and paste in gedit or Notepad for that reason Syntaxs are important please note.... FEDORA/Red-Hat is assumed here If U want to to go for HDD installation completely ( say No cdrom at all to boot) and no linux at all First Boot thru Linux Rescue Disk ( a bootable Floppy available easily) U got to mount the partition containing the images somewhere mkdir /mnt/source # needed to mount the partition containing iso images mkdir /mnt/cd1 # needed to mount the iso image itself mount /dev/hd?? /mnt/source cd /mnt/source # Note :cd1.iso is the name of Ur firstcd image ( Say ) mount /mnt/source/cd1.iso /mnt/cd1 -o loop,ro cd /mnt/cd1 here U will find a directory called images, do cd to that ls boot.img now U got to prepare Ur installation Disk , Keep a Good Floppy ready.... dd if=boot.img of=/dev/fd0 it will give output something like 2880 records in and 2880 records out Note both counts should be same else there is some error while writing the floppy, change it. IF U get both counts same U have Ur installation image ready get out of LRD cd / umount /mnt/cd1 umount /mnt/source reboot Ur Machine and boot from the newly created floppy If every thing written above and done by U is ok U will find Redhat installer boot prompt at boot prompt give linux askmethod press enter it will boot and U will have to some inputs After it will ask the medium U want to boot from choose harddisk now it will list all Ur partition choose the partition containing the images.......... if U have kept the images in some directory do specify the same in the second field If the images are in root of the partition do not give anything here Press enter or OK ( WHATEVER ......) Copying DVD's with kb3 - IO errors

Hi all, I am trying to copy dvds with kb3, but I keep getting I/O errors. Even when I try to use a simple cp -R * /tmp on the dvd mount, it copies a few files and then I get a load of I/O errors. However, the dvd is fine, as I am able to view its contents. I am using Suse Linux 9.2, and I am not sure where to look for the problem. Could it be the dvd driver ? Or is it something kernel related ? Any ideas on what could be the problem would be appriciated. Thanks Shahed.

Dear Rohit, I have done many such installations ( I was forced ..) (Necessity is the MOTHER of INVENTION they say ....) Infact I always prefer HDD installation cause they are much faster and don't require Cd changing also U need to create a the ISO images of the Cd's and place them in one partition.( u can use a seperate directory too....) Type may be FAT or EXT ( avoid NTFS) U must now the partition naming convention eg /dev/hdc1 ,/dev/hda5 ... Since U have opted the HDD installation I assume U know the way to get there... Regarding making the ISO.... U can use X-Cdroast if u know and are comfortable.. If u don't have a Gnu/Linux machine up.. Then try Knpoppix and U can find X-cdroast in it.. if U prefer command line: issue this command in the directory U want the image /dev/cdrom refers to Ur cdrom device dd if=/dev/cdrom of=FC_Disk_1.iso Note the of==output file, and U can give any name U want above is just a example (Please Choose Different Name for each Cd.. I know U know that ....Just Kidding ) Regarding Add -Remove Package.. It automatically check for CD-Rom for Disks and not where U installed from... OF-Course Unless U tweak it to do so ?? Now Once U have iso What are U waiting for then....... Start the installation........ Happy GNU-ing............. Do tell me Whether I was of any help or not .... KPPP Problem solved

The problem of no site opening in KPPP has been resolved, although I don't know if the method is right. After a bootup, the 'Network Device Control' has to be called up first to activate any of the dialup accounts ppp0, ppp1, ppp2 ....The modem will dial to the ISP and then the sites open. The connection should be now closed to run kppp. Closing this connection is also tricky as it is never shown as 'active', either the RedHat software has bugs or its the third party modem driver problem, I really don't know. So a trick method was tried and it works. The 'activate' button is clicked for the same active connection and that interrupts the modem to start dialing again. As it starts dialling, click the 'activate' button again and this time the window waits. Immediately click on the 'X' button on the top right corner to simply close the window. This stops the dialing. Come out of 'N D C' and then use kppp as if nothing ever was wrong, till you reboot again. Regards, Rony.

i agree with Biju. The deal is that programmers working on Windows Platform,with a year's experience gets 20Ktake home plus perks and benefits. If the Linuxenthusiasts gets lessdough then his Windows counterpart, no matter what you say about sharin' and open source, or whatever, its gonna serve as a detterent to him and thus to the FLOSS,etc. movements also. I say this because I have gone through this stage, and though now I am a wiser, a couple of years ago,I was ready to put Linux as nothing but just a hobby cuz "out there" no one seemed to pay you enough for it. The problem of pages getting ejected without printing was due to a postscript setting in the printer properties in the OO Printer Setup (./spadmin). The correct command line on OO setup for printing was lpr -P lx300 which I found out from the good site, http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/COMP/printing/linux_print.html However the page still kept getting ejected. This problem was traced to the setting for postscript in the spadmin where the 'from driver' was changed to '1'. This finally printed the page on my lx 300. To cross check I tried 'from driver' and '2' but they ejected the page. Only postscript 1 is accepted by my printer. The print quality is terrible but this is because it is a postscript printout which is a very basic printout. OO does not support lx300 in its drivers database so only a 'generic printer' can be selected. Generic printer driver supports only postscript. Maybe the new versions of OO 1.1.3 and the preview 2.0 may have better features. Is there any way by which OO can be forced to use a system's default driver, without postscript? Regards, Rony.

Hi all, This is just to announce that PC Quest this month has 1 DVD + 1 CD on the cover. The DVD is Debian Sarge. I haven't tried it out myself yet, but plan to do so as soon as I can make time. I want to install FC from the harddisk. 1. For that, do I have have to copy the CDs as iso files to the harddisk or do I create a RPMS folder and stuff like that ? If iso files are required, what s/w is there to create iso from a CD ? I know only nero which gives nrg files. 2. Also will Fat32 partition suffice for this job or do I have to create a Ext2 partition ? 3. Later on, if I have to add/remove any packages, will the OS look for them in the 'old place' to speak of. Internet Problems

Hello Luggers, The internet access after the modem installation is quite queer. If I setup the internet conection wizard, it creates a network device ppp0 in the list, below the eth0 device. However even after dialing to my isp, it does not show the device ppp0 as active. I have 3 different ISPs so I configured them in kppp. Everything is fine and the connections take place, but when I want to go to any site it only keeps going upto 'resolving host' and does not find the site. If I use the network device control and click on activate for the ppp0, it dials and gives me access to the net but still is shown as 'inactive'. As a result of this I cannot close my connection. I have used RedHat 8 in my other comp earlier with multiple isps and kppp but this behaviour in RHEL is strange. I installed firefox in RHEL and it works fine, giving the addition of a tabbed interface. Regards, Rony.

A Positive Attitude

Dear Luggers, Its 2.40 am and I finally got my modem working in RHEL. The problem was that I had piled up many drivers one over another. I did a fresh install of the OS and then installation and setup was as smooth as butter. I also observe that though the site says that the free driver version is limited to 14kbps, I am able to connect at 56Kbps. Hi, This is about vsnl's new smtp authentication settings. As usual, they have only given instructions for outlook, outlook express and eudora and netscape. The chap on the helpdesk phone had no clue whatsoever as to what to do with linux or even what sort of authentication they were using. Of course, the 22nd November deadline is way past and I can still get my emails thru the vsnl smtp server without any changes in my config. If this mail gets thru, that should be proof enough. Hello Manish, Thanks a lot for your response. Unfortunately my query was incomplete. I did not want way to append o/p of `pwd` to variable. What I wanted was a way to expand relative path to absolute path by removing unwanted prefixes such as "." or ".." and any other partial paths. csh by itself expands "~" but not "." and ".." So if I store: set ABC = ./my/relative/path set DEF = `pwd`${ABC} I get string such as: /home/kiran/./my/relative/path in DEF This is a valid path-string, But I wanted to get away with the "." OR in following example set ABC = ../kiran/my/relative/path set DEF = `pwd`${ABC} I will get /home/kiran/../kiran/my/relative/path in DEF which again is a valid-path string. But what I want is, /home/kiran/my/relative/path in DEF One way is: 1. Store current dir in a variable 2. cd to relative path 3. Do pwd and get result 4. Go back to original variable But I hope ther must be a smarter way to do this. Sorry for the incomplte query posted earlier. Suse 9.2 on Dell PC & Utility Partition Qs

Hi All, I just installed Suse 9.2 on a Dell 4600, with WinXP pre-installed. I used all the default / suggested disk partition settings. My Dell seems to have a "Utility Partition", which was detected by the installer and Grub gives me an option to boot into it. However, I am not able to boot into it I can boot into WinXP though without any problem. If I press F12 when I reboot the PC, there is an option to go into the utility partition, but this just brings up grub. I have not really understood the problem fully, so I dont know what to search for to look for answers :-( Does anyone have ay idea what may have gone on during the install process ? Thanks Shahed

Dear Luggers, Cable internet is a reality that one cannot ignore but it also has its problems of security. Viruses and trojans keep getting in frequently and its quite a nuiscance having to get rid of them often on the same machine. A firewall is not very usefull here as it is in dialup. To access the net, the gateway traffic has to be allowed, so that brings in the unwanted elements too. Being a LAN based system, there is unauthorised traffic from other infected machines too. The clients are all on windows as linux is still not very popular. However, the principles of security should be similar. So what is the way to keep the client machine clean even if the gateway is not so? Regards, Rony.

You only need to make changes in the SMTP settings in your mail client. 1) Set the outgoing SMTP server as smtp.vsnl.net 2) Switch on outgoing server authentication 3) If the client doesn't automatically use the POP login & password for SMTP also, you need to manually put these in. 3a) Make sure you put in the FULL email address as the username, not just the login. I had hell until I figured this out - and the helpdesk didn't know about this. 3b) If you need to set authentication type in your client use "LOGIN" not "PLAIN" or "CRAM-MD5". Regards, Rony. hi rony, as far as linmodems are concerned i have no idea... ....but as far as ur concern abt no firewall in linux is concerned, try installing "clamav" (its a firewall for linux). Fedor Core 3 problem

Hello I am trying to install fedora core 3 on my system. But every time after booting and showing language selection menu it shows me bug like assertions(sector<=3) and assertions(head>=0) and installation abort abnormally Please help me what is wrong Thank you Regards, Komal
