It just looks good. I like command line linux/uni= x for what it is - however, I have a big big problem with its GUI. Th= e fonts, the widgets, the ratios. The numerous GUI toolkits aren't he= lping a standardisation either. Windows looks great - because = everything is consistent. The size of the icons, the fonts, buttons, = etc. Everything goes well with each other. I'm waiting for a the day = I can find a distro with a WM that maintiains consistency in terms if= sizes of widgets and fonts and all the related things resulting in a= very very smoothly integrated and polished interface. I want the app= s to use the native WM widgets, regardless of what TK they were devel= oped using. Webcams which one to use

Which model of locally available USB webcams work with 2.4.24 kernel. I used to use the dlink duc 300 (ov511 chip), which is not available any more. The dlink DSB-C300 uses divio nw802 (or something similar) which produces a horrid black image :-( . Both of the above have 640x480 pixel resoluion@15fps. similar resolution webcam would be good but not essential (i will settle for CIF /SIF).

Ive tried downloading this about 6 times - everytime landing u= p with some or the other problem. And when I manage to complete the downloa= d, the md5s didnt sum. Once the md5 summed and I burnt the image for later = use, only to find out later that the cd was empty. Don't ask me how. This m= orning it was at 450mb before I went for breakfast. No idea what happened to my earlier post! Half t= he lines were missing, stupid Rediff signature was probably to blame. = I've tried downloading this about 6 times - everytime landing up with some or the other problem. uxterm and emacs

Hi All, If I start "uxterm -e emacs -nw", emacs does not respond to Meta-x key press as M-x but as M-8-. This happens only with uxterm. Works fine with xterm, gnome-terminal and console. Locale is set to en_US. I am using Debian unstable. /etc/inputrc is in right format with input-meta etc properly configured. Can anyone shed more light on this? thanks, Rajesh

Hi! Recently installed gentoo and it seems to be really great. Is anyone using gentoo on this list ? Are there any caveats to consider while using it ? Hi Amish, I've no problems with that date= . But, I guess 18th is Sunday which means the college would be off and majo= rity of the students won't be there to attend the meet. So I propose why do= n't we have this meet on 24th (Saturday) of this month. I'm also planning t= o have the FSF Seminar on the same day. We can schedule the meeting after 5= pm. MTNL ADSL Connection on Linux

Hello, I have a dual boot (or rather, triple boot) PC at home, with Linux (Debian-Knoppix) as well as Windows 98 and XP Professional, and we are considering getting an MTNL ADSL internet connection. However, their FAQ (http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/internetservices/adsl/faq.html) says that "At the user's premises, the user must have a PC with a LAN-Card and a Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or a Windows XP Operating System". Hi, I have accidentally deleted some files and I want to recover them. I cam to know that 'mc' works for ext2 file systems only. mine is an ext3 one. Hi Friends, A brief description before i put in my queries.... :) Background :- ----------------- Assume that a motherboard has 'N' physical ethernet devices (eth devices). For each of these devices the linux kernel assign a particular ID. e.g. eth0, eth1, eth2, etc ....... These device ID's are assigned when the linux kernel has come up and done some basic initialization. Also these device ID's do not change while the linux kernel is up and running. With the same kernel version and driver version the eth device number assigned to a particular physical port does not change over multiple system reboots. Query :- --------- I would like to know a few things, with the second query being most important. 1) When i make changes to the kernel code (not related to eth devices) i need to recompile the kernel and give it a new number. For this the eth driver also needs to be recompiled with the newer number. Sometimes after compilation the kernel mapping of ethernet ID (eth0, eth1, etc ....) to the physical port changes. And this behaviour is a "sometimes behaviour". ie. If i build kernel and driver and if the mapping changes, the mapping remains same for the kernel version number. But if rebuild the kernel then mapping again changes with this newer mapping remaining constant for this newer version. 2) How does the linux kernel map the ethernet device ID to the physical port. For e.g. :- How does it detect that port 'X' will have eth4 as device ID. Ashutosh.

help: resizing root partition

My partition table is as follows: Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 382 3068383+ b W95 FAT32 /dev/hda2 383 896 4128705 83 Linux /dev/hda3 897 4757 31013482+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda4 4758 4823 530145 82 Linux swap /dev/hda5 897 2750 14892223+ b W95 FAT32 /dev/hda6 2751 3770 8193118+ b W95 FAT32 /dev/hda7 3771 4280 4096543+ 83 Linux hda7 is my root partition. As it is clear from the partiton table there is a free space of 4281 to 4757. (It actually was a partition that i deleted) My problem is that i want to merge this free space into hda7 i.e. my root partition. I tried parted but it gives me following error: Error: Filesystem has incompatible feature enabled After that I tried fdisk and simply increased the cylinders of hda7 from 4280 to 4757. As expected the partition size(cylinders) was increased but not usable space. my question is that how can I format this partition without losing the data on it as well as able to use it completely. Actually Arjun, the problem is that Karim's book doesn'= t not explicitly teach the building of the root filesystem. He also uses th ird party packages like like Busybox, TinyLogin, etc. which I am specifical= ly prohibited from using. What I need is how do I manually seg= regate all the files built in the toolchain into the appropriate /bin /sbin= /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/lib et al. directories of my created root filesyst= em. Hello Everybody, I have to use the ucspi tools (tcpclient,tcpserver) with serialmail. Consider the following case. I run the command on Linux. tcpserver 90.0.0.24 5000 pwd (any program) so that a tcpserver is created and waits for connections and executes the pwd command. now using the tcpclient tool a client can be started to connect to the tcpserver . tcpclient 90.0.0.24 5000 serialsmtp prefix garfield Here garfield is the host name for tcpserver. I have to use serialmail with tcpclient. The following error is given. serialsmtp: fatal: protocol violation What is the cause of this error ? how can it be rectified. Hey luggers, I have successfully compiled a GNU toolcha= in from scratch. My host platform is an i686 and the target I'm developing = for is an i386. Thanks to Chetan S for actually repyling to my= persistent and annoying mails. There is one more thing. Hello linuxers, Gotta a problem. I have RH= L 9.0 installed with a customized iptables filter+ squid proxy running on i= t.This linux box is natting a few ports into the internal netwk. where I ha= ve my web server+ mail server installed. Now the PROBLEM is that, I keep ge= tting an error "ip_conntrack table full dropping packets" and the= n the internet connection speed on the clients drops like anything although I have a leased line here. I have googled bout the problem, it seems that = the 2.4.20 kernel has this vulnerability. I have downloaded 2.4.24.tar.bz2 = kernel. But, I want to make sure whether installing this new kernel will so= lve the problem ??? There is a setting for limiting the size of a request, but couldn't find any that disallows serving files that are larger than some size. Is there a way to take care of this directly? Hello ppl, I'm building the GNU toolchain for a= i386 platform, specifically , with my host machine being PIII(i686) As far as I know, I have to first build binutils, then the bootstrap= gcc and then glibc. My binutils is successfully installed. Fo= r my bootsrap compiler my ./configure is successfull with the following par= ameters --without-headers --with-newlib --enable-languages=c = However, Im getting erros while "make" ing . I pe= rsonally think that its a version mismatch problem bretween gcc, binu= tis and glibc. I'e been googling for the past two days and have tried= with lots of different versions. Regards, Rajesh Hi, I have finally managed to download the FlashMob RC4 iso. I have played around with it a little bit and here are the results. Basic requirement is 200 MB of Free RAM after booting (Morphix-based). I ran a test on a PII 300MHz with 128MB RAM. I have PCQLinux2004 installed on this machine and it runs like a charm. I could boot Linux and run the software. It ran the small benchmark giving me 0.1 GFLOPS but it didn't run the big benchmark citing insufficient memory. Next I ran it on a PIV 1.8GHz 512MB RAM in standalone mode. It ran great, and the small benchmark gave me a result of 0.5 GFLOPS and the big benchmark gave me 1.04 GFLOPS. Third test was to run it on my Compaq Laptop PIV 2.3GHz 512MB RAM in standalone mode. For some reason the SpeedStep technology kicks in and runs the CPU only at 1.6GHz. This happens with Knoppix 3.3 also. I still haven't tried it out with Suse 9.1 LiveCD. Anyway, the benchmarks ran but gave me pathetic results of 0.2 GFLOPS and 0.4 GFLOPS. I have no idea why. I haven't tried to analyse it yet. Fourth test was to run the server on my Laptop and the PIV as a compute node. Both nodes were detected. In this case, I got an insufficient memory error (don't know for which node, but I suspect my laptop). The benchmark ran and gave me bad results again with the big benchmark just yielding 0.8 GFLOPS. In the fift test, I used another PIV 1.8GHz 512MB desktop as the server and similar configuration for the compute node. No errors this time and the benchmarks ran great giving me 0.5 GFLOPS and 1.8GFLOPS for the small and big benchmarks using 2 nodes. Do you think we can try this out on a larger scale now ? I used it on a P III system with 128 MB ram (Compaq deskpro) and it auto detected all hardware. The response time is also very good. I personally think it is a very good distro for the desktop. Hi: I have a working Suse 9.1 Bootable CD-ROM. And I'd like to try out FlashMob. I'm likely to come to Mumbai next week. The issue so far was that we just talked about it all the time but never really did anything towards it. For me, actually having the ISO in my possession was a major achievement. The next step was to ensure that I could use it and participate in any flashmob activity that we decide. Now, more of us need to do the same thing. Only then can we really think of getting together. MySQL Errors

Hi folks, I want to start programming in AMP. Departing from its past practice of not providing ISO images for free download, SUSE has released a complete, bootable, and installable ISO image of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal. You can find it on SUSE's main FTP server or one of its mirrors, although there is no news about the release on SUSE's own web site. How is libc.so executable ?

Can somone please expain how is libc.so executable ? i.e How does it print its version info out when invoked, when its a shared library ? I have read some stuff on how to build shared libraries, load them etc, but I havent found information on how I can write a SO in linux, and have it also behave like an executable. Thanks Shahed

In our context, it is a bunch of people coming together with their computers to run a clustered version of Linux in order to create a super-computer. The primary objective of this super-computer is to run the LINPACK benchmark to find the collective GFLOP rating of the cluster. Check out www.flashmobcomputing.org and other references on the net. We, in Mumbai have been toying with the idea of doing something like this for the last couple of months but nothing concrete has happened so far.
