problem with bash in RedHat gnu/linux 9

Reviews of broadband ISP's in Bombay?

I want to get broadband internet access for my wife's parents in the Chembur/Kurla East area of Bombay. The idea is to get more bandwidth for communications like voice and webcam. While searching the net for info, I discovered this group and read the thread on Powersurfer. There was a lot of info hard to find elsewhere, such as the facts that average speeds can be 8-10 kbps, the back-end bandwidth is 2 mbps, and it can take months to get service after signing up because they need a minimum number of users in an area. So it looks like a good idea to start a discussion in this group on what's going on. If any of you have experience with broadband in Bombay, no matter whether cable, dsl, or wireless, I'd love to hear about it. For example, what average speeds are you getting? How reliable is the connection? What troubles did you have getting set up? How responsive is the customer service? How are the reputations of the various providers? Is it really superior to a dial-up connection? Are there other things you wish you knew before subscribing? Thanks in advance, Tom

Does mutt use localhost:25 or the sendmail binary to send the mail? I guess mutt cannot talk to SMTP directly. BLOCK SENDER NOT WORKING

Hi , I hv installed block sender plugin. But its not blocking mails. Actually when I saw README file of block sender I found following lines This plugin relies on the use of the procmail LDA. Within the plugin directory is a file called 'sqblock.rc'. This file contains a recipe that must be added to the global procmailrc file (usually located at /etc/procmailrc) along with variables that must be defined. The easiest way to do this is to simply include sqblock.rc in your global procmailrc file by adding a line such as this: INCLUDERC=/path/to/sqblock.rc This should be the first line of your global procmailrc file. So I added lines in my procmail rc as follows /INCLUDERC=/usr/share/squirrelmail/plugins/block_sender/sqblock.rc but still its not working. I know something is wronge somewhere but I cant find it out yet. Any suggestion? Waiting for your reply. Linux file permissions

Hello fellow linuxers, I am having some problem with Linux file permissions. It is simple but some how I am not able to arrive at a perfect solution. I am having four folders in another folder called 'departments'. They are 'sales','accounts','support' and 'management'. I want to accomplish the following objectives:- 1) All people can access 'departments' folder. 2) People belonging to a particular department have read/write access in their folder only. eg. sales people can read/write in sales folder etc. 3) People belonging to other departments cannot *see* into other departments folder. eg.support people cannot *see* anything in sales, accounts, management folder etc. 4) People belonging to 'management' can read/write into all folders. 5) People belonging to 'accounts' can *read* 'sales' folder . They cannot add/delete files. I know that I have to use usermod,groupmod,chmod,chown.chgrp commands. But I am not able to work out on what exact folder/file to work on. Iptables Query

Hi Problem 1] I am able to use IPTABLES for sharing Intenet and DNAT. The server used has a live IP and the code used to enable me to share Internet Access and DNAT to my internal server is iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE But as far as I understand MASQUERADE is used in case of Dynamic IPs and with Fixed or Live IP you can directly use DNAT and SNAT rules. But when I remove the above mentioned line I am not able to share Internet Access nor I am able to access internal servers from outside (DNAT). How to combine 2 mpeg videos on a GNU/Linux system?

Hi I'm trying to combine 2 mpeg videos. I thought the following would work: cat file1.mpg file2.mpg > final.mpg When I play the final.mpg it works fine till the second video starts and returns the following error on the screen libmpeg2: stream not demultiplexed ? I'm using XINE. I thought maybe what I need is a Video Editor for Linux and so found LVE on SourceForge but had problems compiling it.. This is the error I get qdir.cpp:10:26: qapplication.h: No such file or directory followed by a whole bunch of similar errors. I'm using a GNU/Linux system (Knoppix 3.2 - Debian). Anyone had any luck with making lve? One more thing ... the first video is 10 seconds long and does not contain any audio signal. Whereas the second video is a 32 minute video of RMS which is compressed big time since the file is only 53 MB. Regards Rishi

[ILUG-BOM] Unique Event to show case GNU/Linux in Mumbai and Call for Help!

Long Mail! Hi, Summary: this note is to inform and seek your help for FSF Stall at the WSF Event, manage the Media Centre, and give any helping hand (time and money). Richard Stallman and several other leaders of Free software from Europe, Latin America will be visiting. We have a unique event to organize and witness in Mumbai this January, an international event called World Social Forum. Read more about it from http://www.wsfindia.org. Since the use of Swatantra Software (read free software) is concieved as an important social and ethical practice by the organizers of this event, which actually takes place every year at one place or other in the world, they have agreed to use only GNU/Linux in an important facility of the event called Media Centre. Media Centre is a place where all the journalists from all around the world who will visit the place to cover the event will be using the computers to send emails, exchange documents with their offices, compose articles etc. This Media Centre will be using exclusively GNU/Linux. An important occassion for all of us to celebrate! But, at the same time a very crucial responsibility. There will be 160 PC running GNU/Linux. We dont want to accept any failures. All the journalists who will be coming there are NOT GNU/linux users. At most they know how to use a desktop. So we will provide them with the best of what GNU/Linux provides with best office software, and a few of the communication tools they need to work. These PC are required to be internationalized so that they could with a touch of a button could be able to use different keyboards. It is expected most people will be using French, Spanish, German and English. Several East Europian and Asian friends are also expected. We should install, test, and maintain all the machines before they are deployed for ten days, the actual event is from 16th to 22nd January. Media Centre should begin functioning from 15th afternoon to 23rd morning. There is another facility where online translation of the speaches will be provided. The people who want translation will be using a radio, sets will be provided, and an FM station will be setup for this purpose. Even for this hitech event the organizers have chosen to use GNU/Linux. FSF Europe and others are helping this to happen. FSF India Stall: At this stall we will have people telling and distributing information, and other goodies if any to the visitors. Richard Stallman will be there all the six days in Mumbai and he will be giving around 4-5 speaches and will be participating in several round table meetings. Our repsonsibility is to provide enough volunteers who know GNU/linux Desktop well to help the journalists and other important visitors to use the computers at the Media Centre. So, please try to volunteer to support this event and take up a responsibility. Since the media centre is required to be running 24 hours, we need to do a shift system so that we are always there to help. We need to people who would like to help the users to do their tasks, such as sending mails, printing documents, saving files, making CDs when they leave, composing documents, spell checking, setting the language options, providing internet facility etc. The technical skills needed are not very high. More than general familiarity to GNU/linux is enough. The PC will have either GNOME or KDE installed. We also need some experts around to trouble shoot and fix installation related problems. We need about 40 volunteeers in all, with about 15 people to be there during the day time on any day. Let me remind the dates are 15th to 22nd. Installation will team however will start the work by 12th morning. BTW, the venue is National Stock Exchange grounds Goregaon. We cant get a better opportunity to show case to the world that Swatantra Software is mature and will meet the IT aspirations of people. Hello Friends... This is my 1st post. so plz be kind if I did any wrong :-) I have VIA 8233 board I heard 1st sound when I used mandrek 9.2, RH 9.0 (which came along DIGIT). I think mandrek is more cool... (it's my op.) But DIGIT gave only CD-1 other 2 r missing... In mandrek 8.0 they have option at install time...But...mandrek "devloped" 9.2 so good............ Lastly "plz anyone of u folks can kindly give/distribute those CD's i tried knoppix 3.2 but it has no sound supprt/dma support /SVGA support ..ah...VIA8233... knoppix 3.3 would be nice..." rh9.0 too slow !

Hi, I installed RH 9 on my system : Celeron 1.2Ghz= on an Intel 810e2 Chipset with RAM : 2 chips of 512 MB and 256 MB, = each detected to half it's capacity, to give 256+128 = 384 MB. RH = 9 detected this correctly DURING INSTALL. I got it installed and all= , but now it's VERRY slow and unresponsive. This same problem had occ= ured when I had switched my system from a P3 to a Celeron 1.2 (along with a= RAM change from 128 single to the current scenario). Why is the syst= em so slow ? Unable to NAT

Hi All I an trying to share internet access using NAT. On the server side I have set ip_forward to 1 and added MASQUERADE in iptables script. And on the client side I have configured server ip as gateway and using same dns servers as specified on the server. But when I do tracert (windows client) it just hits gateway machine and get Request Timed Out. SOS. Triple boot Red Hat 9, Windows Me and SuSE 9.0

I do most of my software development on Red-Hat 9 since it was new. My test system is a Pentium 4 /1.7 GHz on an Intel D845GEBV2 motherboard with 512k DDR-SDRAM. Put in a Samsung CDROM and three 40GB-7200 rpm Samsung Puma hard disk drives. [hda, hdb and hdd] hda on my computer has Red Hat 9 hdb has Windows Me Wanting to check-out what SuSE had to offer, I bought a SuSE Professional Linux 9.0 box. SuSE installed uneventfully on hdd, but now Red-Hat 9 wont boot. It chokes when it finds SuSEs Reiser filesystem and /boot Disabling hdd (Secondary Slave) in bios, lets my Red Hat 9 on hda (Primary Master) boot normally. Any suggestions how to get SuSE 9.0 and Red Hat 9 to coexist? Ram

All the CDs contain only one file with the extension ..cpio.gz I unzipped it using gzip but how to extract files from .cpio format. I read the man page for CPIO but could not understand it. You could try this out even if you're on another distro. you will have to enter the root password to access it. hi, i got multiple processes running on my system, whose process id's (PID) can be known by "ps". My query is .... can we increase and/or decrease the priority of these processes "dynamically", so that i can choose which process gets the maximum and which one gets the minimum CPU TIME. best of luck. ashutosh.

suggest a speedy window manager

hi ppl, this is my first mail to the list. I am a relatively newbie to linux. The problem is that i am using gnome as my desktop, which seems to have slowed down my system considerably. Could anyone of u suggest me any other window manager, which would speedup the system, be simple and provide optional features. Tried KDE but no performance improvement. Hi Friends/Pete, I m new to sendmail, I was configuring Sendmail/Squiremail setup, I was successfull in doing so.Now the problem is I m not able to SMTP my mails thru Outlook Express although I m able POP the same. I doubt with some Relay configuration. I edited my /etc/mail/access file to allow other ip and then ran the makemap command as makemap hash /etc/mail/access.db < /etc/mail/access and restarted the service but din'nt work. Any advise on the same ??? Also if some one could help me with some good docs on NIS and LDAP clubing with sendmail. I have a text file in the format Full name email@ddress It's a pretty long list of names and I want to remove all the email addresses from the file. I basically want to be left with a file with only the names of the persons, one on each line. I tried :s [a-z]\@[a-z] //g in vim but it did not work. Hi, When i gave 'map' at EFI prompt,nothing related to CDROM was displayed. The o/p of 'dmesg' is: #dmesg | egrep -i 'flo|cd' hda: HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7500, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdb: LS-120 SLIM4 00 UHD Floppy, ATAPI FLOPPY drive Hence i created a boot disk by : dd if=boot.img of=/dev/hdb bs=180k Now at EFI prompt i change to shell>fs1: fs1>elilo linux The system won't boot from local cdrom,but it boots from prev old linux which is on hard disk!! Server Details a) Our service provider provides us a catchall account & SMTP access. e.g. Server IP 10.10.10.10 b) We have a gateway firewall server with squid running. e.g. Server IP 55.55.55.55 (Live IP) c) We have a email server running behind the firewall. e.g Server IP 77.77.77.77 To Do a) The email server should be able to send POP & SMTP requests to our email service providers server ie 10.10.10.10 via our gateway server b) Users from internet should be able to access our internal email server i.e. 77.77.77.77 via our gateway server 55.55.55.55 Current Status a) I feel the following iptable code running on our gateway server will allow users from internet to access our internal email server. Dear Linuxers, I have been working hard on building my own RedHat Linux based distro..... I have made a kickstart file using redhat-config-kickstart and saved the file @ ROOTBUILD/ dir and isolinux/ Dir..... While testing anaconda --test method=nfs ...e.tc. The custom kickstart installation does not begin but I do see the changes in all the RedHat logos...e.t.c Does that mean I cannot test the kickstart using anaconda --tes method=nfs ...command or am I making a mistake...in placing the kickstart file. frozen messages in exim

I am running debian testing/unstable w/ exim 3.xx. I am getting frozen messages in the mailq. Eximon gives the following error: -------------------- Unknown local part "sharukh" in domain "pavri.net" -------------------- I have the following line in /etc/email-addresses spavri: sharukh(a)pavri.net what am I doing wrong ? sharukh -- Dr. Sharukh K.
