Hi, I am trying to write a parser to handle double byte strings. I want to replace double byte characters containing some special symbols (like { } ^ ] [ \ etc) in their trail byte with *. Could anybody help in this matter? working with exim

I need some help with exim. Just for the heck of it, I shifted to Debian and am running a mix of testing/unstable. And I haven't broken anything major, and yes apt is great but this mail is not about apt. I would like to start using exim as the mta as that seems to be the default (I know I can install postfix - but I want to get exim working now). I am on cable with a nigtbird plan. My webhost supports pop-before-smtp. I had configured exim at install time and had chosen the config to work with a smarthost. Now when I send a mail from mutt, I can't see anything with the mailq command. The machine was offline at that time so the mail could not have gone and has to be in the queue. I know that exim -q or -qf will send the queued mails, but I can't see the queued mails. I went thru the debian reference and the exim faq but could not get any help. I have used sendmail w/ rh 7.3 and postfix w/ rh9. What are the equivalent commands to 1. mailq 2. delete a mail in the queue 3. edit a mail in the queue (an do it w/ sendmail but not w/ postfix) thanks, Sharukh. -- Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri. Contacting the list admin

If anyone needs to contact the list admin (for example to report abuse), use the list admin's address and not the list address. The admin does not monitor the list exhaustively. Also, a request to people not to include *real* email addresses in the body of their messages. The archiver (pipermail) does not obfuscate these addresses, making them spam feed. Ideas on how to fix this are welcome. -- List Admin

xfs problem

I installed a linux RH 7.1 in my comp. I think I changed the display settings from KDE to TMW or something like that. Now the comp hangs just when the whole os has been loaded and the x server is about to start. The Alt F2 function does not work and when i try to reboot (Ctrl Alt Del) I get an xfs FAILED message on the screen. I dont know if I'am perfectly right but each connection needs 1.5MB RAM which should'nt be a problem in your case... whether you want raid on the server or not depends on the level of mission critical docs on the server........ well there's an excellent utility at sourceforge which helps you change passwds of samba users... Backups are not a problem, since you can access the files from anywhere in the office...ou can use "tar" to compress files...and store them on CD's with the name Autocad12DEC2003.tar.gz for ex. Make SAMBA the LMB and also remember to use the netlogon feature... dont worry just url your way to http://www.harkness.co.uk/file_sharing/ Quite a good place to get a primer on samba....and then the good ol mailing list to your rescue......way to go man....enjoy the SAMBA dance... Multithreading query/ thread stack limit

Hi friends, I am developing a multithread program on solaris platform. In one of the functions, which is being called inside a thread, there is a very huge array of a large structure. (Instead of creating on heap, it is created ON STACK, i.e. local variable of a funtion). I tested the program using Rational purify. When I increase the size of the structure or the array size, the purify gives a sequence of BSWs (beyond stack write error) and BSRs (Beyond stack read error). Obviously, this problem has something to do with the thread stack limit. 1. Why does purify give beyond stack write and beyond stack read errors and not "Stack overflow error"? 2. How to find out the thread stack limit on a particular system? Is it configurable? If I run the same code segment inside a process (main thread) I don't get the above BSRs and BSWs. Hi, I am trying to port a large and complex application to Linux. I have identified two approaches by which this can be done. I was hoping to get advice on which is the best approach, as well as the pros and cons of each approach. The application consists of 2 layers: Layer 1 -------- * Written in ANSI C * Queries a proprietary database Layer 2 --------- * Consists of a GUI written entirely in MFC * End user uses this layer to communicate what search and retrieval he wants the Layer 1 to perform. * Some part of business logic is also mixed up in the GUI. - Many times the result set returned by Layer 1 is modified by Layer 2. - Occasionally the search string given by the end user is first modified in Layer 2 before being passed on to Layer 1. - Filters to queries are applied by Layer 2 code. There are two approaches that I have identified to do the porting: Option 1: Go the WINE way. -------------------------------------------------------- As expected, the ANSI C code of Layer 1 works perfectly within WINE. Not all parts of the GUI code of Layer 2 work in WINE. When a feature does not work, it does not mean that the problem is in its code. It could be in code which is some steps earlier. So I need to hunt and correct the errors by recoding the error producing code. The advantage is that perhaps this may be much lesser work than the second option. Option 2: Go the Qtk way. -------------------------------------------------------- I have studied a white paper on Qtk. As far as I can see, almost all the components in MFC have been re-coded by Qtk people so that they can be complied to run on GNU/Linux. My task therefore involves a. examining all the code modules b. separating the code which deals with MFC from the business logic code. c. replacing the MFC code by Qtk code (The business logic code can be pasted directly in Qtk. Right?) This is more work compared to Option 1 but there is one advantage. The same source code than can be recompiled for Mac and Unix versions also. Hello there, I want to setup a File Server on the network at my dad's office. he has 10 computers ( win2k , win 98 ) they open MS office applications and Autocad files. People have suggested Samba, so thats the way i am going... I have more doubts, but no experience setting such stuff up. 1) how do i do backups ? as they work with MSWord and Autocad they dont have much data, but some stuff needs to be archived and a small amount is frequently changed. ( CD ? Tape ? ) 2) what sort of hardware is required for such a server ? any special hardware. ( Raid ? , what sort of Hard Disks ) 3) Any other points which i may have missed ? Networking Equipmet ? Cannot ping internet hosts

Hi! it seems that my ISP ( LAN based internet ) has blocked pinging of internet hosts. I am unable to ping google,yahoo etc. I need it to check whether I am connected to internet. Is there any other way to check if I am connected to Internet ? Also how to find out the current IP address of my PC ? /sbin/ifconfig does give the IP address, but suppose I've to use it in a script, how do I get it ? I've written this small script to get the IP address : /sbin/ifconfig | grep inet | sed -n 1p | tr -s " " |cut -f3 -d " "|cut -f2 -d ":" Is there simpler way to do it ? Hi, I've installed Fedora Core1 (Kernel - linux-2.4.22-1.2129.nptl). I've compiled it, so that I can access my NTFS partition. I'm trying to automount that partition. I've specified "ntfs -fstype=ntfs :/dev/hda5" in my auto.misc file. But I'm unable to access the partition. whenever I try to 'cd /misc/ntfs' it gives me error as No such file or directory. Hello, I am trying to setup an email server in my office premises. I want to setup a server which can receive mails for a domain like the following one( giving only the format not the exact one since it is not yet decided): user(a)anything1.host1.domain.com user(a)anything2.host1.domain.com user(a)anything2.host1.domain.com basically its the second subdomain which is changing along with user name, rest of the other things remains same. I have a static IP with me which is yet to be registered for the domain name. Since I am new to this task and don't know how to go about it. Though I have read from a site www.dyndns.org, and they suggest that the static IP should be on the hostname host1.domain.com for above example. Am I right in understanding that? Hi All, I need to manipulate (modify headers, check body for certain strings etc, append footer texts etc..) every outgoing email. How can this be done. I have been googling for a long time but no good clue... I am considering the following options... (1) I can pipe every outging email to a PHP script which will do the necessary manipulation and then forward the email to SMTP. I wonder if this is possible (2) I can pipe every outgoing mail to MySQL. I can then use PHP scripts to manipulate the email and fwd it to the SMTP. (3) I will have to write a PHP script (whch will behave like an SMTP server) and bind it to port XX. The Email clients can be configured to deliver the email to Port XX instead of port 25. I don't really know how complicated this PHP script will be !! Any inputs, pointers are deeply thanked. Only a _few_ students learning computer science know about it. How many of them actually use it I dont know. So there is a majority who dont know about Linux. These people are using pirated softwares primarily. As RMS says towards building a better society, we need to spread Linux awareness. 2) There are companies which use Properietery software for their needs which can easily be fulfilled by FLOSS software. This will help these companies reduce their operational costs and increase profits or reduce price for their product. In any way economy is benifitted. I dont want to start a flame war here over TCO. I belive that Linux has lower TCO than properitery softwares. 3) FLOSS offers a lot of learning opportunities in the technology. a generation strong in the technical field will fetch more work to India than just BPO work. And when I say technology, that includes Microsoft technologies like .NET for which one can start developing applications on Linux platform using MONO or DotGNU. (I just came from Bangalore Linux 2003 where I saw a few demonstrations of how Mono can be used to code in C#) In my opinion the agenda should be to make more and more people aware about the viable alternative out there. Let this event get good media coverage, let it be known in all the colleges in Mumbai. And not just Engineering one, but all the Arts/Commerce/Science colleges. In my opinion such events should be arranged in all major cities. Since we stay in Mumbai, we should take responsibility to conduct such an event. The problem I see is how many volenteers we have? how many of us has time to devote? Can we handle an event at such a volume? Regards Aseem

In my current organisation, I asked my boss if I could use Linux as my desktop. The answer was a straight away "why do u need Linux ? ". And the company spends so much time and resources on windows patches and security alerts just because everybody is running windoze. 2. Programmers perspective - clearly Bangalore and Hyd are ahead of Mumbai in technology race. In such a situation ppl from Mumbai have to shift to Blr and Hyd for better career prospects. While I do appreciate growth of Blr and Hyd, I do not see any reason why Mumbai should be left out of the race. Holding such events will definately foster technical growth in Mumbai. 3. End user perspective - Mumbai with all its banks and financial institutions is financial capital of the country and a promising market. 4. Maybe even govt. agencies can benifit ( if they find time from the various scams :) ) --yogesh

Building mod_jk for tomcat on RedHat 9

hi All, I have successfully installed Tomcat 4.1.29 on my RH 9 machine and the http://localhost:8080/ is working fine. I have also preinstalled J2SDK on my machine. Now my major headache is building connector module (mod_jk.so) for my Apache to communicate with Tomcat. I have tried to follow a lot of documentations step by step to build the connector but without any success. After setting CATALINA_HOME & JAVA_HOME env variables on my machine this is a brief description of what i did set CONN_SRC_HOME = /usr/src/jakarta-tomcat-connectors-4.1.29-src. Run the buildconf script to to create the CONN_SRC_HOME/jk/native/configure file. by issuing CONN_SRC_HOME/jk/native/buildconf.sh Run the configure script with the path to the apxs file on your system and the options below: ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs till here everything went fine without any errors. But when i issued the make command after a long compilation procedure the make exited with error 1. it said unable to find libapr-0.so module. I tried to google solution for this but without help. I would really appreciate if any one can help me out of this situation. INDIA'S BIGGEST 'OPEN SOURCE' MEET GETS UNDERWAY DEC 2 IN BANGALORE FROM FREDERICK NORONHA In a country of vast numbers, figures sometimes cease to surprise. But organisers were themselves thrilled on roping in 2000 registered delegates for a major open source conference over 72 hours before the meet's start on December 2. "A little while ago, we breached the 2000 registered delegates barrier, and are heading for the stars. We are going to need tin openers and shoe-horns to get everyone in," said a tongue-in-cheek announcement from Atul Chitnis, one of the main organisers of the Linux Bangalore 2003. India's southern garden-city of Bangalore considers itself the 'Silicon Valley of India' and this will be the third year running it has been hosting the largest-so far open source conference in this country of a thousand million. At 2000 registered participants, the number crossed the official seating capacity of the conference. But, organisers said: "This does not necessarily mean that you wont get to participate, since not everyone who registers actually shows up, and some people will attend on some days, and miss others. However it does mean that we are going to be seeing a full house again this year." Online-registration costs Rs 300, while those who sign-up at the venue, the prestigious Indian Institute of Sciences, would have to pay Rs 500. In dollar terms, this is just approx US$ 6 and US$ 11 respectively. But for Indian participants, this obviously means more than its dollar-equivalent suggests. Food comes included for this three-day event. Hewlett Packard, Novell Inc which recently bought over Ximian and Suse, and local Bangalore firm Exocore Consulting are sponsors for the event. India's federal government, which has earned some flak for appearing unsure of its support to Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), has also come in with sponsorship, as in the past year. Organisers went ahead to call this "India's biggest annual Open Source event". Till now, they've had no competition in either size or ambitions. But in 2004, the country's first exclusively-FLOSS magazine called 'Linux For You' has announced plans for a national meet in Delhi. It is not clear still what size and shape that meet would take on. Said the Bangalore organisers: "What differentiates this event from commercial events (that are typically driven by vendors) is that this event is completely conceived, organised and driven by the Open Source community, focussing on technology talks and a technology expo." It is seen as being built on a "low-cost" model, where Rs 300 to 500 brings in access to "all talks and sub-events". This year, over the three days, this event promises nearly 100 talks. Speakers pulled in from across the globe include Miguel de Icaza (Mono/Ximian), Rasmus Lerdorf (PHP), Nat Friedman (Ximian), Jeremy Zawodny (MySQL/Yahoo), Bdale Garbee (Debian), Harald Welte (iptables) and others. Local big names from across India's open source movement would also be present, though those in the Free Software camp -- with its nucleus around the also South India-based Free Software Foundation (India) -- are known to sometimes keep off this event due to differences in approaches. Some of those from India taking part would include KDE-developer of Indian origin Sirtaj Singh Kang, Anjuta-developer Naba Kumar, one of the co-founders of the Linux India movement Sudhakar 'Thaths' Chandrasekharan and others. Organizers have planned the screening of a movie ('Revolution OS'), a music concert by the fusion group Laya Taranga, and a rock concert by the group Phenom. "Bangalore, already the IT capital of India, is quickly becoming a hothouse for Open Source development, with companies like Ximian/Novell, IBM, HP and others setting up development centres there," said the event's organisers. reinstalling over /

hello ppl, i wanted ot upgrade from RH7.2 to RH9 today, but this was failing because it seems my rpm database is corrupted or somthing. ( invalid hash ) so now i am planning ot install over my root fs of the original RH7.2 thankfully i have /home on a different partition and i have copied /etc and /usr/src ( carious kernel sources ) there. so the question is can i just "chown" over my home after reinstalling the new RH9 fs. or is there anything else. i have ot look out for ?? thanks for reading rahul -- Let me put it this way: today is going to be a learning experience.

Guys I need some help. my qmail seems to be working qmailctl stat shows that the smtp is working now how do I make applications see it as sendmail. Meeting Venue on 14th.

I have recived a proposal that the next meeting can be held at CDAC's Training School in Bandra. Mr. Prasad Kulkarni said it is possible to hold our meetings there. Many of the students who will be taking CDAC's courses will also be attending. I would like to know whether we do this on the coming 14th of DEC or the meeting in Jan. kernel panic --- init not found

I have red hat 9 installed on my computer partition /dev/hda9. (there is no special /boot partition) I had made a monolithic kernel but the kernel could not load init----it was not able to mount the ext3 file system, it gave the error "kernel panic init not found, try passing init=/ ............." (although I had compiled the kernel with ext3 file support) After that I downloaded the kernel-2.4.20-19.9.src.rpm from redhat.com. I compiled it using the rpmbuild command. The compilation was successful But still the same error "kernel panic init not found, try passing init=/ ............." again the kernel is not able to mount the ext3 file system.
