Problems with Partition Table

Hi all Luggers ! On my home PC I have 10GB hdd in which there are three primary partitions - 6gb,2gb,2gb .. Win98 is installed on the first partition and the second partition also belongs to Win98 .. Linux is installed on the last partition in which I have 2 logical partitions one for Root(/) and the other for the Swap partition Before installing Linux, Win98 showed me both the partitions correctly as c: and d: as the last one was kept unused for installing Linux.. However after installing Linux, Win98 shows 3 partitions as c,d and e where e: shows the contents of what previously belonged to d: and now the d: show me an error message of "Invalid media reading drive d " In other words the positions of both the partitions are swapped (from win98 point of view) Even worse I can't access the second partition from the dos prompt .. In linux things are as they shud be and I can mount both the Win98 partitions properly .. Please help me Thanks in advance Warm Regards, $ sonpal -kj

x win problems

hi all, there is an observation with regards to KDE manager (i am not sure if others behave similarly). if you put the machine in screen saver mode (password protected ) and press ctl+alt+bs then xwin gets killed (actually it should not because autherization is not confirmed) and gives open access to the account! (even if it was logging the user out it would have been fine). is there anyway to stop this? ulhas

Compressed files

Are *.gz files really compressed into smaller sizes? Because when I open a gzipped file using WinZip, the compression ratio always reads 0%, and after extracting the conctents of a gzipped file and adding up the file sizes, it totals the size of the *.gz file. So where's the compression? Also, which one can give the maximum compression, gzip or bzip? - Shrikant p.s:- is it my imagination, or are duels getting rather prolix?

Kernel Compiling

Hi, Thanx guys, for all the support and encouragement. I had another linux installation at home and tried compiling it at home with a new kernel 2.4.4, which i dowloaded from kernel.org I managed compiling it and also booting into it. However before i got too excited, i found that i set my eth0 wrong. I tried to linuxconf and netconf and both gave me pipe broken error. Do i have to recompile and if i do what do i have to take care? About the upmteen problems that i faced in my office installation I think i will reinstall RHL 6.2 once again and then try to compile to the new version. The basic problem I had was gcc/cc was not installed and therefore i could not compile. Will try installing an older version of gcc. unable to make menuconfig

Hi Luggers, It all started after I started to upgrade my kernel from 2.2 to 2.4.2 as philip suggested, i untarred the 2.4.1 kernel but was unable to add the patch. While applying the 2.4.2 patch, it gave me an error : patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line unexpected end of line in patch. I continued to make menuconfig. and got the following error: rm -f include/asm ( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm) make -C scripts/lxdialog all make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.1/scripts/lxdialog' >>Unable to find the Ncurses libraries. >> >>You must have Ncurses installed in order >>to use 'make menuconfig' make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.1/scripts/lxdialog' i already have it installed. i.e ncurses3-1.9.9e-11.i386.rpm and ncurses-5.0-11.i386.rpm Then i downloaded gcc-2.96-54 which gave me an rpm error saying major numbers <=3 are supported. So i am upgrading rpm to 4.0.1-0.6x and it is giving me an error failed dependencies libdb-3.1.so is meeded. Am i going in circles. Is there a simpler way. Please advise. A., NCST Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Juhu Abstract:Data compression techniques are applied to files to reduce their size, which in turn increases the capacity of data storage and speeds up data transmission. Data compression draws heavily from information theory, which deals with the probability of some symbol appearing in the input. For totally random sources, each symbol is equally likely, but random sources are uncompressible. This means that the more probable an event, the less information it contains. Data compression techniques also work on this principle. If we look at real-world files, we find a lot of redundant data in them. Data compression exploits this redundancy to its advantage. Hello There, I need to know If there is an online (dowloadable or otherwise) verion of a good book on C/C++ like Dennis Ritchie / Bjarne Stroustroup... Ditto for Unix. N/W prog. like Richard Stevens... I had seen the 2nd Edition and felt it was mostly about how different commands work..And feel I can get this info from MAN... Or am I wrong? ok here goes i am an absolutely faltu (read -just finished his Be comps last week ) ideal mind (what was it ideal minds being devils workshops).... and with little idea of linux limited to seeing it boot and typing vi/gcc blah blah at the prompt i survived college with barely writing a socket pgm and a fork pgm.. now i really want to learn network programming,shell scripting ..any gurus/good traning institutes in mumbai -- ? or do u all know any books /sites... i will be installing redhat 6.2 this week end frm pcq2k cd..i do have suse linux -- is redhat a good choice ? Where do I get information on how to configure my /etc/sysctl.conf? I am installing IBM DB2 and as a part of the procedure, I have to edit that file "set maximum message queues to 128" (I don't know what that means, but I am sure it's got nothing to do with email messages). Here's what I have to add to the file -- # Sets maximum number of message queues to 128 # Set this to 1024 or higher on production systems kernel.msgmni = 128 What does that parameter mean? There's no manpage for the conf file. LUG meet at FreeOS' new Office

The Indian Linux User's Group [Mumbai Chapter] met at the spanking new offices of FreeOS Technologies on Sun 24-Jun-2001 at Vile Parle. BTW, the HQ of FreeOS is at Worli. There were 16 participants in all and the CEO of FreeOS, Prakash, was kind enough to grace the event. Philip was kind enough to give a gruelling [to him, I guess] lecture on "How to compile a Linux kernel" - replete with practical demo and all. The participants were from all levels of Linux experience and many interesting questions were fielded. Dinesh saved the day on many an occasion from the ramparts, as it were, with his insightful contributions and asides. We winded up at about 8.30pm and Navin was kind enough to bring along his DigiCam to immortalize the event forever. The results of his photographic prowess are attached here. hi folks! i've managed to download the 2.4.5 kernel..(thnkx krishnan for offering ur cd) I've currently got 2.2.14 on my Suse box. I've also gone thru the Changes file for the new kernel, and accordingly downloaded new e2fsprogs, modutils, binutils egcs etc.Before i take the plunge, i wanted to know if anyone has done this beofre on suse...what happens to yast? will it still work? any gotchas/caveats etc etc? also, the new kernel requires me to go back to egcs 1.1.2 which means an older gcc than the one currently on my system... what happens to my other applications? well..i think i;ve asked more than enuff questions in one mail! tia kishor _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Installing Linux

I am unable to install RHL 6.2 on my 20 GB Hdd. The partitions created are 2 gb Win 250 mb /boot 256 mb swap and 3 gb linux. The rest of the spave is kept blank. After creating the partitions, setting up the ip and the xserver, it installs the rpms after this it gives the following error exception occurred /usr/bin/anaconda line 342, in ? and the error list goes on. I tried installing specific rpms and still the same problem. I have installed with the same cd a few times previously without any problems. what could be the error. How does one get rid of linux? I have a new hard disk with only linux installed on it. How do i get rid of linux from that hard disk? I dun wanna low level format from the CMOS and then use a windows boot disk to use the partition again.. isnt there any other way? 1. Takes too long to load on a graphical browser (because of the excessive use of tables) 2. What do the four images on the Sections page mean? A descriptive text tag would be useful. Also, is it correct to rip the images off the linux.com site? 3. PHPNuke seems pretty good, with the customisation options 4. How-to link returns a 404 5. LDP link returns a 404 6. Footer links are not visible using some themes (dark theme in particular) 7. What is the SMART Library advt that appears at the top of the page? Mouse problems

Hi, I'm trying to install debian on my system, and everything works out pretty fine, except the mouse part. Firstly, there's no /dev/mouse. So I figure that shouldnt be a problem and get gpm up and running and use /dev/psaux and then I do a startx. Then, when I move the mouse around, the pointer initially goes haywire, and then come to a complete standstill at the centre of the screen. My mouse is a PS/2 type. Any sol^ns ? - Shrikant

Hi All, FYI Remarkable improvements in server performance! http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2776396,00.html Apache 1.3.19 running on a Red Hat Linux 7.1 system upgraded to the 2.4.5 kernel was able to process at peak throughput 4,602 Web requests per second. the best score Apache on Linux had was 1,842 requests per second (remember, in our retest, Linux and Apache settings were directly tuned by Red Hat engineers). Instant Messengers - Times of India

The Times of India - Saturday 16 June - has an article about Mundu - the first Instant Messenger that can handle "all" the protocols, and allows communication between people on different protocols. Three things I don't get. 1. If they are the first, then what are everybuddy and jabber? 2. If they handle all the protocols, then why don't they handle jabber, zephyr and irc? 3. I don't understand how they allow communication between people on different protocols. Has anyone used mundu? As far as I can figure out, in order to send a message on MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM or anything for that matter, you must have an account with that service. If you do have an account, then where does the cross protocol communication come up? If they do in fact support cross protocol communication, then good for them. Either way, I'm tired of uninformed reporters overlooking open source software once again. What we really need is education of the media. Any ideas? Philip -- One Bell System - it works. SiS900 LAN Card problem

hello guys! I've got a Acer Sx with SiS900 onboard lan adapter...which SuSE recognises during installation, but strangely, i see the rtl8139 module being loaded instead of the sis900 module. now, i wouldnt be complaining if it was working, but it aint...i can see eth0 and stuff, but cant hear any replies to my pings. so i do rmmod rtl8139 and insmod sis900, and the system complains that resource is busy.. well..so i shut down networking and _then_ do insmod..it returns without error, but alas! when i start networking it says eth0 - no such device... i have even downloaded the latest sis900.c and sis900.h files from the SiS site and tried to compile in the sis900 driver into the kernel..but still it doesnt configure eth0 at boot time. sigh! finally i'm posting this here..has anyone successfull configured this card?(if u have, are u still sane?) i suspect there might be some options that this card required, but i havent come across_any_ documentation regarding this. Its not mentioned in the white paper written by the blokes from SiS who wrote this driver.. anyway..ANY help is appreciated right now..i've gotta go and get me a Dispirin now.. kishor PS: i havent got any replies to my earlier query about my X problem.....is this Acer Sx such a rare piece? Problems with Opti931 Sound card in Caldera

Hi all, I have OPTi 82c931 as sound card for which i installed the Alsa driver .. The system is AMD-K6-II 500 with ViaMVP3 m/b I'm using Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 .. I installed the driver as instructed by the INSTALL file .. However even after inserting the module manually using modprobe, my PC is still mute .. Have tried to unmute the mixer in the KDE using kmix but it says 'You do not have enough permissions. Log in as root and chmod a+rw /dev/mixer' .. however I was logged in as root and it actually has full rwx permission for all .. Dunno what the problem is .. The contents of /proc/asound/sndstat says 'Audio Devices:Not enabled in config' Ditto for Synth Devices & Mixer Devices .. Now what does this config means ? Has any body configured such sound card previously ? Shud I post the pnpdump file alongwith the mail ? Please guide me .. Thanks in advance .. $ sonpal -kj

PQ Boot

I have installed Linux 6.0 along with a Win98 installation in a system, that had Partition Magic 6.0 and Power Quest installed. While I tried to install LILO, it didn't get installed -- is that because, Boot Magic is already installed as the MBR ? Normally, Boot Magic gives an option of booting into Win or if any other OS is installed. But in this case, I'm still having to use a Linux boot disk for booting into Linux :/

True Type Fonts.

Hi all, Some good thing to share. I installed the new version of XFree86 that came with PCQ (last month - XFree86-4.02). Interestingly, the new X font server displays all (okay, not all, but most of them) the true type fonts that I have. There are only few steps to be done to achieve this. This is what I did. 1. First I created a new directory in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ directory. I called it "TrueType". 2. Then I copied all the true type fonts that I had into that directory. 3. Next I ran the following command [root@localhost /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType]# ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir 4. Next I added the path of the newly made directory in the "catalog" of the config file for xfs. The config file is at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config. I also added the path in the "FontPath" of XF86Config file. 5. Next, I restarted the font server, [root@localhost ~]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart That's it !!! Now you can have all your true type fonts. I could even have Indian fonts working with it. :-) More importantly, for GUI users, Netscape now looks much better. Believe me, much better especially Netscape 6.1. I have tried it with both Netscape 4.73 and Netscape 6.1 and both of them are able to use the new fonts. Netscape 4.73 somehow is not able to use all of them. I don't know why that is so. Netscape 6.1 uses all of them. Will now try to use this fonts with StarOffice. BTW, I am not able to use Java with StarOffice 5.1/5.2. I have jdk 1.3 installed. I have looked at many places for some answers, but couldn't find. I tried some of the solutions available on the net. The only difference now is that it does not display any "errors", but still no applets. Quite wierd, specially since both the products are made by the same company. Regards, Rajen.

Hi, Rajen, I have used a separate font server called xfstt. It is available via freshmeat. I am very satisfied with its performance and it is very easy to configure. In case you have used it, how is the performance of XFree86-4.02 as compared to xfstt. I am unaware of what is meant by anti-aliased fonts etc. In fact I do not know much about fonts. But xsftt is excellent. I borrowed some true type fonts from a Windows 98 machine. I do not know if it is the right way. Please comment. Problems after using X !!

hi! I'm using an Acer Sx computer in my office, and i installed Suse 6.4 on it yesterday... I could configure X easily..it auto detected and selected the SVGA server, with DAC, and proper video memory... startx fired the X and i gleefully "moused" away.. the problem occured when i logged out of KDE....i couldnt get to a text console! none of the consoles work! all i get is vertical lines......and different colors on diferent consoles..!!! i had 3 partitions on my 20 GB HDD. C: with win98 OS(5 GB) D: DATA (win98) (10 GB) NonDos Mandrake (5 GB) After installing Mandrake 7.1, on the 3rd partition of 5 GB (Non DOS), and the other 2 with win98 partitions, i m not able to access my D: drive. I checked with DOS Fdisk it showed D: as NonDOS, and with Mandrake Install CD, it showed win98. Pls help me, as i have no back of my data. Hey linuxers, How do I set up Pine so that the recipient's mail client displays the from header as "From: Chrisil" ? Although I am using a role with "Set From: Chrisil <ajjoseph(a)powersurfer.net>", the from header in the recipient's client appears as "From: ajjoseph(a)powersurfer.net". Even while composing Pine displays the header "From: Chrisil <ajjoseph(a)powersurfer.net>". Also I need to send mail through my ISP's SMTP server using Mutt. For this I need to setup sendmail(Is this called relay??). How can I configure sendmail for this. I have no experience configuring sendmail. Please help. Mutt's asking for missing file!

Hi, I'm trying to use mutt on my Slackware 7.1 box, but on starting it up, it says "/var/spool/mail/root --> no such file or directory errno=2" [to that effect] Now, I have a fair idea of what it means, because I deleted the file called 'root' in /var/spool/mail [even though some stuff in it explicitly told me not to mess around with it]. But is there any way that I can get the file replaced/remade? - Shrikant

Hi friends, I have installed jdk 1.3 and j2sdkee1.2.1 on RedHat linux 6.2. I tried to use forte for java (community edition) for this setup. But it gives me error saying "Please set JAVA_PATH variable to point to jdk home." I don't know how to setup environment variables in linux. Cannot log into RH 6.2 anymore

well, i have a squid proxy, using IPchains for sharing net, samba for LAN, DHCP server on a RH 6.2. I wish to monitor the senders address and reciepients address (if possible). Writing client side program which will trap the urls

hi friends. I want to write a program on client end which will trap all the urls accessed by the surfer. Requirement is something like that the program will run in background and logs all urls in text file. Can somebody please suggest me tools .. i preffer C ... just tell me how shall i write it ?..... client browser can be NS, IE.... anything.. Help required ranjeet

mouse problems

hi all, i have recently switched to mandrake 8.0 only to face a strange difficulty. during installation process, the kernel correctly detected my mouse (however, did not show me the settings!) but after that it stopped. now i have confirmed that the mouse (logitech firstmouse+) and serial port are okay. could someone pls. guide me as to how to configure it. it is mounted on ttyS1 and i have tried "mouse" only to remain in the same state. thanx ulhas

Dear linuxers You must have noticed that our list has been down for three days. My server at hbcse has been unstable after upgrading the system, and in the process old beta version of mailman stopped working. I have now installed mailman on another system mm.ilug-bom.org.in, same as our www.ilug-bom.org.in, and started working. I hope this will continue to work without fail. You may notice that the mails will now come to your mailbox very fast after posting. Please note the change of posting address, and web access address. This mail contains all the information. Infact this new mailman version contains list management links in every mail. I hope this feature will be very useful. Please do change your filters (procmail, netscape etc.) Also please change your options. I managed to collect only the digest and non-digest members list separately, and lost the other options that you may have set. You have to visit the web site http://mm.ilug-bom.org.in/mailman/listinfo/linuxers to make the changes.
