Downloading Knoppix in Sify Broadband

Hello Friends, I just wanted to share wat im doing right now...May sound crazy..But experts here may give me some advice tats why im writing this... I started downloading knoppix on sunday morning(08:08:05) with my sify broadband connection...But till afternoon i could download only 12% of the total download using the Firfox browsers inbuilt download manager after which i had a power shut down :( So i had to restart the download from 0% again in the evening,Some one in one of the yahoo chat rooms suggested me to use "FlashGet" to download knoppix,So till yesterday nite i was able to download 15% of it...Again today morning i started it,Its still downloading :D Whn i just look back,I feel wat im doing is quite funny or indeterminable...I didnt know any other way to get it,Im put up in chennai...I don't have any friends having knoppix CD in here....Im still continuing this thing here.... Kindly tell me any other alternatives....Coz the only way i felt like getting is this one.. :( Thanks a lot for patiently reading.... Regds, Gokul

Hello folks, As mentioned in the subject, I have Gentoo Linux 2005.0 running KDE 3.4.2. I happen to have a Nokia 3650 phone. For a long time, I've wanted to be able to transfer images, videos etc from the phone to my Linux box and vice-versa via Bluetooth. I tried to get this setup working a few days ago and found success. Forward DNS request to ISP

Hello, I have setup a Linux proxy on FC2 with wvdial for internet connection over modem. I have about 5 differenet ISP dialup accounts & depending on connectivity, I keep juggling between the ISPs. The problem is, whenever I swicth the ISP, I have to change the DSN IPs on the desktop too. If I put my Proxy Server's IP address as the DNS on the desktop, then I will not have to keep changing the DNS values on the desktop. Is there any simple way to forward DNS queries (recd from the desktops) to the ISP's DNS Server (allotted dynamically for every connection)? Alternately is it not possible for server (i guess squid) to do all the resolving business and let the desktop live in peace.... Advice / suggestions / pointers are welcome. Vai

Windows cellphone

I am the owner of an IQ 200phone. I was gifted this abomination. It has windows ce. The processor is omap 510 a TI variant of ARM with dsp for cellphones. It is a nightmare to use. I suppose that is the windows standard. The hardware is good and would be put to good use if only i could load linux. I am ofcourse planning to do so but wanted to know if anyone on the list has this gizmo, so that i can get it working if things go wrong. rgds jtd

Hello All, In the concrete jungles that we live in, the amount of natural daylight that is available to every room in our buildings is negligible. This results in full usage of electric lighting even during the daytime. Due to this, our electricity bills shoot up and the commercial establishments pay the maximum price for this. We all know that optic fibres can transport light over long distances and are flexible enough. A single optic fibre is too thin to transport a huge amount of light but suppose a whole bunch of optic fibres were used to form a... say one inch (or more) thick cable, then would it be possible to transport a high intensity of light through this cable? This needs to be experimented. If successful, then we can have a thick cable that runs from the terrace of the building to the room where the lighting is needed. The bright sunlight can be focused on the cable using parabolic reflectors or optical lenses. A transparent heat shield can be placed just before the cable starts, to absorb excess heat. At the receiving end, a special spherical glass unit with multiple miniature prisms can be used to evenly disperse the light like a bulb. For every 'bulb' there will be one cable. The cable will be flexible enough to be routed in a neat way. If this system works for even 50% to 60% of total office lighting, then this will mean a huge saving on electricity bills for commercial establishments as well as residences and will be a clean, maintainence-free source of day-light energy. What ports need to be masqueraded for VPN connections?

Hi We have a LAN with windows workstations connecting to the internet using a Linux router. Because of the viruses penetrating through internet explorer we've disabled Masquerading/NAT of the entire network and installed a proxy which does content filtering and virus scanning. However, a few windows workstations connect to a VPN. Does anyone know what ports need to be masqueraded for VPN connections? Thanks Regards Rishi

[OT] Com Port Issue

Hello All, I am having a dispute with my mobo repairer. I gave him a board that had serial mouse problems. He is supposed to have exchanged it with a working one as the one I gave him had a defective com port that could not be repaired. I did not mark my board so I cannot verify if an actual exchange has taken place. The 'replaced' system worked for 4 days at the client's place and the com port got knocked out again. Cyberoam trouble...

Hi guys, My ISP, 7star, uses cyberoam client to authenticate its users. I was happily using linc-daemon to authenticate to my ISP's server. As fate would have it he upgraded it. Now it uses Cyberoam version 6.5.0.5. linc-daemon is unable to login :(. It does say "login sucessfull" but I am unable to connect to any websites. The same configuration was working fine before he upgraded. He wasn't very co-operative the last time I had enquired about getting his connection working on Linux. Plus he has this weird idea that Linux is a "hacker" (or cracker) OS. I am 100% sure that the configuration is correct. Nevertheless I tried I tried the client which is distributed by cyberoam. It doesn't work either. It says "You have successfully logged into xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" yet I can't connect to websites. It just get stuck after name resolution. As I said earlier I am 100% sure that there is no configuration problem. It is definitely due to some misconfiguration on the ISP's side or the protocol isn't supported by linc-daemon. Any help, suggestions are HIGHLY appreciated. I can't live without internet on Linux :( Regards Dinesh Joshi P.S.: Apologies if the formatting isn't ok on the email. Hello everyone, I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 with 1 gig ram, and nvdia graphics card(details in the end). I am trying to configure a dual head single graphics card. The other monitor is a dell 1024x768 lcd display. The problem I am facing is that when i click on configure display and try to configure a dual head, the ok button does not respond. And, finally i need to click on cancel.. Any help will be appreciated. Morning Fellas, With inputs from the gurus on this ml and from Sherlock, i have decided to make use of the Via-ITX board for the MP3 player on which i will connect a 64MB IDE Flash for the Shrinked Operating System and an LCD Display along with a Remote via the serial/Paralell connectors. Have tried some contacts on lamington for the via-itx boards but can't get anywhere. Any links/nos/email addresses of pple who retail the via-itx eden/c3 boards?. Please do pass them on if possible along with contacts for the LCD Display and the Remote Controls too is possible. Is there a site from where these can be ordered?. Afternoon Fellas, Am planning on booting me Via-ITX from 64MB of flash with the OS in ReadOnly mode. The HDD for storing the MP3's will be in RO mode too. Getting a stripped down version of Gnu-Linux to run on the flash will be the easiest part. The issues which i am still trying to work out are about integration of a JukeBox with the Remote Controller and LCD Display. Am pretty blank about intgrating the LCD and Remote Controllers with Gnu-Linux via Serial/Paralell ports and providing hooks to the onboard JukeBox application. Do point me to some docs/pdfs/sites i can read up on this please. Root partition doesn't unmount on poweroff

Hi everyone, I'm running Ubuntu 5.04 on my machine. When I poweroff the machine from a terminal or by pressing the "power" button, the root partition doesn't unmount cleanly and it checks the drive for errors on restarting. This *dosen't* happen when I poweroff from GDM or from Xfce. Can anyone help me with this? I use the commands like "sleep <time> && poweroff" very often, so it gets annoying when fsck runs on startup. (the filesystem is ext2). I see Debian Gnome. The mistake I made was that I did not scan Disk1 -partly coz of the prompt (insert any Debian disks..e.g. 2 of a set of 2 disks) after I scanned that disk, things went smooth. I went manual and installed x-window-system and gnome. Had a little trouble with X. The auto-config took /dev/input/mice which crashed X. I edited X configuration (all coz of my Lin Bible) that to /dev/psaux and Gnome is up!. Now to rain on my own parade. No sound .. /dev/dsp no such device. I had Suse 9.1 with sound so my h/w is up to it. (Intel865GBF onboard sound) The Gnome login screen now has no shut down option. earlier I installed the desktop from tasksel and that had the option. Now I just come to the login screen and push the power button Ok? Any key-comb to shutdown. I setup fstab to read my NTFS partitions. trouble is non-root users can't get in. Fat partitions have the same setting ro,user,noauto and they work. What's with this ? Nautilus keeps crashing - unstable Debian set?? I lost my desktop icons and right click on the desktop. That apart Debian-gnome is super-fast and a treat to work on. I got ruby and freeRIDE running in no time. Thanks a million, jtd Gishu

This is a very important thing which I am focusing on. Please feel free to add anything else you have noticed. Then perhaps we could send a letter to TOI or something Have you ever realized how TOI seems to favour Windows a lot. I am not just talking about ignoring Linux. Anything which is not Windows gets a small box while even the slightest news about Windows gets half a page. To qoute a recent example: In the Aug. 5, 2005 issue of Times International they have half a page for Windows Vista, and Another half a page in Mumbai Mirror. They say how it has coll new graphics with transparent titlebars. Hasn't KDE and X had it from atleast 6 months ago. When there is anything about IE like tabs in IE7 they had an article, but I have never seen any article about Netscape, Opera, Mozilla or Firefox. They never tell you that if you switched from Windows to another OS you could totally escape from viruses without having temporary updates. HCL released their Rs 9990 PC having FC3 or FC4. But all they mentioned was that it had a 'Linux-based OS'. No mention about why it is good, its features and better security? Isn't the press supposed to be impartial. Lots of other newspapers provide technology news not concerning Microsoft. Well I have expressed my views. Please note that this is just my opinion and I am not voicing everyone. Nikhil

Linux compatible motherboard...

Hey people, My friend wants to buy a Linux friendly motherboard. The dealer is giving him the following options: 1. MSI RS480M2 for AMD64 2800+ 2. Intel 845GVSR for P4 2.4Gig 3. Intel 915GAV(i think, not sure) for a P4 2.66Gig His requirements: 1. Basic development PC, nothing much 2. Must be able to run Madrake(Mandriva) 10.1 Official 3. Alternatively he should be able to run SuSE 9.1 PE which is quite old and hence I question the availability of drivers for recent hardware. 4. He is a newbie so everything must work out of the box. Don't expect him to compile drivers and stuff...forget a kernel recompile. Please give your opinions and suggest a better, more compatible motherboards. I got the Debian Sarge CDs from gautam borad, who posted on this list sometime back. Next time dude, pls post that the 7 CDs are "unstable" version r0A. Would have helped me ? ok so I got it installed at the cost of my Suse 9.1 working install. Base install AOK. The sources.list file has cdrom entries for disks 2-7 of the set (Just looked up a book.. i think this is a list of places to look for packages. However if I try to install gnome for instance apt-get install gnome I get a slew of dependencies, which "will not be installed" or something to that effect. How do I plead with apt-get to find and install the req dependencies ? Pls keep in mind that the machine does not have a 4 lane broadband conn. so online updates would be a prob. Can I get a Desktop from somewhere within the 7 CDs stuck at the Debian command prompt again (spider sense tingling - jtd are u replying before I post this?), Gishu Pillai

Hi I am a newbie to the list and linux. Lately i installed Sarge 3.1 and when i try to surf the net from root i can but when i try to do the same from user, mozilla says "Website not found" Same with GAIM, Kopete and others. SO presently i pull up my terminal and issue the su command and from there fire mozilla to surf. Is there a way where i can surf as a normal user. I channged pppd to suid "chmod 4660 /usr/sbin/pppd" even that doesn't work. Can somebody help me here. THanks in Advance . The ones in the pc are perfect audio and rf noise sources. Embeded boards are expensive because of miniscule volumes. Their advantage is battery operations, low heat, no moving parts and compact size. Relative to their cost the performance is pathetic. 2 hard disks and formatting

Hi I have 2 hdds both 40gb. ( Say D1 and D2) I have 2 pc's (say P1 and P2) P1- new with P4,256mb ram CDR/DVD combo drive etc.and D1 is connected here P2 old IBM branded celeron 500 64 mb RAM 52x CD ROM drive BIOS does not support CD booting and D2 is connected here The P1 pc boots XP and FC3 as XP is used by my brother. Also I have installed 2 more distros on this. As the P2 pc does not have a FDD and CD boot is not possible I was not able to load any distros except ubuntu so it was lying idle for some time I removed D2 from the old PC P2 and connected in the P1 Pc The P1 Pc is detecting it as Primary master and Primary slave. Even FC3 recognises it as hdb. My problems 1.I do not remember what filesystem I have created on D2 although FC3 shows some partitions. I am unable to mount them. 2. Sometimes after booting FC3 or even Slackware when I run dmesg I get some errors of DisK_read io error 3.How do i format D2 and create partitions on the same 4.My D2 is showing as 32gb even though it is 40 gb. Evening Fellas, Am looking to build an MP3 player based on Gnu-/linux. This would be based essentially on one of the embedded processor architectures either the MIPS or the x86. The whole issue is as follows, i have a 25x25rms amplifier at my residence and would like to have an mp3 player with an LCD-Remote Control connected to it. The building of the mp3 player is the easiest part. The tough part is finding hardware that would be the right fit. What are the boards i should be looking at?. Well i got the latest (in india) Acer Aspire 5002 with AMD Turion ML-30 processor. According to those of you who have used reliance's fwp for r-connect on linux, what would be the best option for top speed and linux compatibility; the older one with serial cable or the iphone with usb cable or older one with usb cable? 2. Can the serial cable version be setup without drivers in kppp just like an external modem is setup? 3. Does its dialler work in the gui mode like kppp or it has to be controlled through cli only? 4. Has anyone tried out web hosting services in Mumbai. I'm looking for the following configuration - Linux, PHP 4.3.x(preferably 4.3.8+) and Apache with FTP and .htaccess support. Hi All, I am using Fedora core 1 and i have downoaded ebtables-brnf-3_vs_2.4.22.diff.gz file for ebtables configuration. I want this to enable ethernet Bridgining on my LAN and also wants to put few rules of firewall. I have searched a lot but still not able to patch ebtables with my kernel. Could anyone of you help me in this regard. I need configuration steps as well as files which will required for configuration. help Installing Ubuntu

I recently bought a HCL branded PC with 2.93 GHz, 512 MB DDR, 80GB SATA, DVD combo drive, intex speakers... I tried running a live version of Ubuntu on it, but it is not able to identify the cdrom drive. So the live version fails to load and so does the installation. The DVD combo drive is a TSST corp CDW/DVD TS-H492A. If anyone has the drivers for this or can provide any help at all whatsoever, please do! Obliged, Kiran

problems with erasing CD-RW on samsung cd-writer

I have been trying to erase a CD-RW(moserbaer) using cdrecord utility (on kernel 2.6.11). Writing o CD-R is not an issue. To erase the disk I issued the command "cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hdd blank=all" After issuing this command it receive the following message <snip> Starting to write CD/DVD at speed 10 in real BLANK mode for single session. Debian, Fedora, SuSE, Mandrake, CentOS (RHEL clone) are a few that have AMD64 editions. I would suggest that you try the AMD64 edition of whichever 32 bit distro you are using now. Alternate Dialup Problem

Hello All, I have been experiencing problems whenever I want to use an alternate dialup isp instead of my main default one. I use Mandrake 10.1 with kppp as my dialer. After I have connected to one isp, if I disconnect and select the second isp, the connection is successfull but sites don't open up. The kppp accounts are set to delete earlier dns entries so that everytime there is a fresh entry and the firewall is also flushed but no luck. If the system is rebooted then I can use the second isp. Conclusion: Whatever isp is dialled first works, for the next, its a hit and run case with more failures than success. Any clues? Any Tips or tricks? Kmail won't fetch my email...

Hi Guys, I got fed up of hotmail and its non-threaded interface. So I created a new gmail account just for using this mailing list :P. Anyway, I enabled pop3 @ gmail and everything seems to be working fine. But there is a problem. I sent myself an email just to test whether kmail is working alright. The email was sent fine and it has landed up in my inbox. But when I asked kmail to fetch my emails, it says no new mail. I logged into the web interface of gmail and sure enough the email was there. Why wont kmail fetch that email? Any ideas? Also, is my email looking ok? I am wrapping the lines at 78. Should I change it? BTW I am using FC2 with kmail 1.6.2 -- Dinesh A. Joshi

For those who don't know, The Linux community in Bangalore - The Bangalore LUG- organizes an event every year for the past few years. So far, this event has been called "Linux Bangalore". I'd heard of this event in 2003, but was able to attend the event in 2004. You get to meet lots of techies, listen to talks, learn lessons, share knowledge, and build contacts. I feel that apart from the name and the venue, there's nothing Bangalore specific about this event - all are welcome and there's no discrimination. This year, the event promises to be focussed on FLOSS and community issues, than be limited to just Linux. Since it is the attendees and the various enthusiasts who'll benefit the most, all are invited to participate in the discussions. While there are people from this list who're already members of the linux-bangalore-2005 list, apparently not everyone is aware of this event, and the planning for this event. Hi I have been using linux since 2000. Earlier it was only Slackware but now I am quadruple booting my machine with Win XP(my brother uses this) FC3(primary distro-full install) Debian 3.1(25/4/05 build-base install will add packages as and when needed) Slackware 10.1(without KDE or Gnome but with XFCE and fluxbox but usage will be more of CLI The basic purpose of doing this was to get a taste of 3 major distributions. Everything is running fine but now what Also I want to learn programming and basic userlevel CLI tasks even maybe text editing in vi/vimor emacs. I dont know from where to start. May be a book on programming etc.I want to use linux installed on my Pc for some learning purpose. Earlier when I was new to Linux setting it up and using Linux for playing music/video/surfing were only the primary tasks I did. Any suggestions Thanks and Regards Ninad

hi there issues with communcation softwares

Hi everybody. I have a small issue with communication softwares. i was using procomm and pcplus under DOS to check the signals of the devices connected to my serial port. now in linux i use minicom but i dont find that effective. So can anyone let me know if they have used any softwares for communication with serial ports. i mean softwares like hyperterminal in windows. If yes please let me know. Windows won't forget samba password.

How can I cause Windows XP to forget the samba passwd? If I login to samba as foo and then after some time I want to re-login as bar, XP doesn't ask for the passwd. It just logs me in as foo. How can I sort of "logout" of samba? Restarting smb doesn't help. I use minicom for checking anything and everything connected to the serial port and have never had a problem, which is in sharp contrast to hyperterm on w98 which fails to work with most of the time.

disconnections of users in samba

hi; i have configured samba server( print server and file server) but problem is some of the users is automatically disconnecting from server . i checked logs then i got following error log [2005/07/12 10:34:49, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(436) read_data: read failure for 4. are tabs separate browsers in firefox

Icons freeze when online, detailed output.

Agile Mumbai 2005 conference

Hi folks, ASCI (Agile Software Community of India) is organizing a conference on Agile methodologies in Mumabi. The details of the conference can be found at ASCI's website http://202.53.78.202/agile2005/agilemumbai/index.htm. I understand that this is a methodology conference and not a technology conference. But I think it would be helpful to the Linux hackers for the following reasons: 1. Agile and Open Source share the same philosophy 2. Techniques like short releases, code ownership, collaboration across team, developers writing unit tests, etc are quite similar to what happens in the Open Source world. 3. There are few other techniques like continuous integration, automation, pair programming, etc that could be very useful in the Open Source context. ASCI was started back at the beginning of this year to promote Agile methodologies in India. Since then we have organized two conferences, in Bangalore and in Goa. Mumbai is the third conference and the next one is planned to be held in Pune next month. We are seeking support from all Agile (and non-Agile) enthusiasts in making this conference a success. We have a fantastic line up of speakers from various organizations that practice Agile. Please do sign up for the event and help make it a success.
