sameer had written about a problem of getting into linux without the boot floopy i had the same problem sameer so i did this: 1.made a folder in c: and put loadlin.exe and vmlinuz into the same folder{loadloin willbe in the folder dosutils in ur CD}{vmlinuz in dosutils/autoboot} 2.made a bat file in c: with the following instructions: cd\ cd lboot loadlin c:\lboot\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 3.note: lboot was the folder i made in c: which had loadlin and vmlinuz and hda8 is the part of the hdd where i loaded RH7.1 4.the problem occured because u tried to load linux on cylinders after 1024 (pls try this at ur own risk, it did wrk for me) Namit. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? JunkBuster asking for chkconfig

Hi all, Yesterday I downloaded junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm and tried to install it using $ rpm -Uvh junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm The command returned failed dependancies asking for chkconfig However chkconfig is already installed on my system .. $ whereis chkconfig chkconfig /sbin/chkconfig No man page is available for chkconfig .. Size , RSS in top

Hi, Can anyone explain me the significance of Sice Vs RSS as reported by top and program performance ? I did a man top, but I am still confused. I have java and C programs running on my RH 6.2 box. One of the C programs shows RSS as 35M and size as 36664 Another instance shows RSS as 660 and size as 36500. Both are the same executable, but one instance is writing large chunks of data to a socket. Do I need to be concerned if RSS increases ? Or should I just care about size ? Thanks Shahed

Hi, I have 2 boxes with me. One is running windows 2000 pro and other is running Red Hat linux 7.1... I have setup a network between them.. the linux machine has to NICs, eth0 [ internal network ] and eth1 [ cable connection ].... when i ping my windows box from linux, i get good responds... but when i ping my linux box from windows, i get a time out error... my routing tables are correct.... both the systems have the same subnet masks... anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem? hi, I am using Debian (testing) on a kernel 2.4.7, and compiled modules for sound card support .... but I can't get it to work. Three problems that I encounter: 1. no sound 2. aumix complains that mixer support is not compiled into the kernel, but there was no mixer support for the 1371. 3. whenever I move the mouse, I hear a distinct buzzing sound from the speakers. KDE & netscape + [OT]Restart Problem

Hello people I have a problem running netscape on kde it gives a segmentation error - core dumped message and exits the queer thing is that it works perfectly with gnome running so how do i solve this problem ? secondly i have started having an [OT] hardware problem every time i restart my computer my keyboard and mouse stop functioning and the computer hangs if windows is default in lilo and the if linux is default in lilo then redhat kudzu the hardware detecting tool starts and offers a list of keyboards to choose from i have to go with the default in lilo as pressing keys has no effect except the capslock, numlock and scrolllock buttons blinking together. also the keyboard is detected as otherwise a "keyboard not detected" error would be given by my bios thanks Aarjav __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? We don't need no dependencies

The dependency stuff in Linux is really frustrating . I mean when I download some new software and try to install it , it shows some dependency problems. To give you an example recently I downloaded a a mail client called mahogany which had 2 dependencies. Now I downloaded the reqd package to solve it. To my surprise that package had 5 unsolved dependencies ! I gave up the idea thinking that I would be running around in circles. I had same nightmarish experience when I tried to upgrade rpm 3 to rpm 4 Is there some distribution available which gets over this problem ? Linux is so well organized in other ways then why this irrational dependency thing . Why can't developers make standalone software ?

Disk Partitioning for RHL7.1

Hi all, In the installation of the RHL7.1, I found that it does not allow me to install Workstation mode in a dual bootable system with a lilo prompt. So I decided to give cusom setup. But I still stucked up at the disk partitioning part. So can somebody tell me how should I partition the disk & mount it to the different mount points. My present disk partitions are: The Disk Druid shows the following chart -------------------------------------------------------------------- Partitions Mount Point Device Requested Actual Type <not set> hda1 3898M 3898M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda5 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda6 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda7 3961M 3961M win95 FAT32 Add Edit Delete Reset Make RAID device (BTW wht is RAID) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drive Summery Device Geom [c/h/s] Total(M) Free(M) Used(M) used (%) hda [2481/255/63] 19461M 3883M 15578M 80 % ---------------------------------------------------------------------- So I have around 3.8GB for linux. How much minimum space should I assign to these mount points: / /boot /usr /home /var /opt /tmp /usr/local Do I need to assign any FAT partition to any mount point I tried this & found that only /home & /opt are allowed in the FAT partitons. Pablo, Check out the handshake required between ur pc and the remote terminal(server). maybe ur handshake is not correct or there is some spelling mistake or something. if it is possible, for the remote host ur r dialing to, to monitor its connections ask them to do so. set up a time when some admin guy will sit at the terminal there and see if u are actually talking properly with that server there! i dont think having an old modem is the cause of the trouble. check out the protocol ur using. :) regards sagar sule ===== When you have hit rock bottom, The only way you can go is UP! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Disk Partitioning in RHL 7.1

Dear Friends, Yesterday I tried to install Red Hat Linux (RHL) 7.1 on my m/c. Everything goes fine abt detecting kbd & mouse. After that I start with system installer with the workstation mode for the installation. The next step was the Disk Partitioning. Let me tell u 1st abt my disk partitioning. I have 20GB hdd with 4 partiton of approx 4GB with FAT32 (total 16GB) for windows & remaining 4GB is left free for Linux. Drive Disk Space SetAS C 4GB pri dos D 4GB logical | In E 4GB logical | Extended DOS F 4GB logical | & remaining 4GB is free for Linux. I AM UNABLE TO INSTALL LINUX ON THIS FREE SPACE. I'm STUCK UP AT THIS PLACE. Here the Auto partitioning failed (in workstation mode, other options r server, laptop & custom mode) giving the resion that, " There is not sufficient disk space in order to automatically partition your disk space. You will need to manually partition your disk for RHL to install." Giving 2 options for disk partioning 1st manually partition with Disk Druid & 2nd with fdisk (expert mode) The Disk Druid shows the following chart -------------------------------------------------------------------- Partitions Mount Point Device Requested Actual Type <not set> hda1 3898M 3898M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda5 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda6 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda7 3961M 3961M win95 FAT32 Add Edit Delete Reset Make RAID device (BTW wht is RAID) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drive Summery Device Geom [c/h/s] Total(M) Free(M) Used(M) used (%) hda [2481/255/63] 19461M 3883M 15578M 80 % ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If I try to mount the entire free disk space (3883MB) as linux native with mount point as / (root) then the system gives the message that, " There are currently unallocated partition(s) in the list of requested partitions. The unallocated partition(s) are as shown below, along with the reason they are not allocated. / Not enough free space " ...& the installation get aborted & I need to reboot the system. How can I come out of this? & make the partition for root swap & home 2nd thing if I try to assign swap partition (let it b 1mb or 128 mb) from the free space of hda device the Disk Druid chart show Requested is 128MB & Actual is 2047MB & free space remains is only 1836MB. The same happend even if i assign swap of just 1MB. here only requested mem changes & other parameters remains same. Why is this happening? I have used vim for whatever little lisping I did. It has good syntax highlighting, flashes the parenthesis etc. There are only two things I think vim does not do that emacs does (are there any more?). #1. Autoindent according to the number of parens open. #2. Run a lisp session in an emacs buffer. #1. I did manually. Is there any way to do it in vi that I do not know off? #2. this is not so much of a problem as I used two terminals open, one for vi and the other for lisp. I used gpm for copy paste. Emacs does not have syntax highlighting in the console mode I think. This font-lock-mode, it seems, works only if you open a emacs session from X. But I do not want to use X. Under X I think Xemacs is better that the emacs. Any reasons I should use emacs rather than vim? quasi. p.s. Philip what about tutorials on vim||emacs like the one on pine?

hi guys i have finaly figured out what to do with jdk1.3 and redhat 7.1.the info may be a outdated as newer version of jdks have been launched but nevertheless this is what you have to do first set the envirnoment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the directory /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/client & /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/classic & /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/server or where you have installed them then set the envirnoment variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 after this create a symlink for the cat file which redhat has removed from the past location after this you should be able to get java running the reason behind the setting of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL variable is the jdk1.3.o version is not working with the new floating stack feature of the i686 version of glibc.the problem is due to the assumptions made by jvm which are now invalid .this has been supposedly corrected by the new version of jdk .if you have 1.3 then force glibc to use the deprecated stack model by settting LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 if any one has got some experience with GUI development in java please contact me individually not through the mailing list i am facing some problems . bye tushar _________________________________________________________ For Rs. 2,000,000 worth of Aptech scholarships click below http://events.rediff.com/aptechsch/scholarship.htm

Pablo had the following problem ............. I have a problem to connect with a modem from my Linux machine to a Linux server (modem is working, as other people can connect). The problem seems to be that my modem does not understand when it gets connected to the remote modem. First of all, to dial I have to use ATX1DT instead of ATDT, I do not know why. After the modems are connected, the "typical noise" comes and it never stops. I never get the login prompt. =========================================== Pablo, i hope u r using wvdial, (if not use it! its good). anyways, in wvdial.conf there is an option "Carrier Check". disable it. u will have to edit wvdial.conf in /etc directory. just add Carrier Check = No in the file. this should do the trick. and the gvc modem cannot understand the usual mtnl tones so ATX1D instead of ATDT!! regards sagar ===== When you have hit rock bottom, The only way you can go is UP! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Mouse Config Debian 2.2

Dear Linuxers, After installing Debian 2.2 and trying to start the X server, the X server crashed giving out the error as Fatal Server Error Cannot open mouse(No such file or directory) Somewhere I messed up with the mouse config, but I dont know how to config mouse later after the installation of Debian system. Does gpmconfig configures mouse? Anyways it gave me command not found. GNU Emacs manual

Hi, I noted the expression of interest in GNU Emacs, Lisp etc. I too wanted to master Emacs, so I dowloaded the tex source on my Windoze office machine last week, ran MikTeX over it, converted it to a PDF file and printed out all 526 pages of it, since we plan to use Emacs on Win NT at work to edit sundry TCL/Tk scripts. The upshot of this is that I have made a photocopy of the manual for myself (copied back to back, it comes in at a manageable 270 odd sheets, spiral bound). This cost me around two hundred and sixty rupees, at fifty paise per page. If anyone is interested in a copy, I can either give them my original printed sheets to photocopy, or else the PDF file to print out (1.7 MB). If anough people are interested, maybe we could negotiate with a Xerox offset print facility to deliver even cheaper copies. Incidentally, I used the photocopy shop in St. Andrews College, Bandra (West). Let me know if anyone is interested. BTW, Philip, what text editor do you use? Kernel compilation :some doubts

Phew! finally compiled the kernel and got it working :-) I used many config options and made different kernels (about 5) before arriving at this working kernel. I do not remember the exact options I used. Is there some file where the options are stored so that I can refer them while further tweaking my kernel? How do I know whether my new kernel is better than the default one? Please enlighten. -- A shortcut is the longest distance between two points.

We will look at a broad overview of the Machine Learning spectrum, from Inductive Learning to Clustering. We will also specifically cover Inductive Machine Learning in more detail and the technologies used to implement it and finish off with the various exciting applications of Machine Learning. Kernel compilation problems

I am using kernel 2.4.2-2 I compiled it using following steps : make xconfig make dep;make clean make bzImage make modules;make modules_install Now I copied bzImage to /boot and made appropriate changes to lilo.conf I executed /sbin/lilo Now while booting linux I get following errors: modprobe:Can't locate module opl3sa2 {My sound card is Yamaha and I had enabled this module} I tried sndconfig which gave me following error : You don't seem to be running kernel with modular sound enabled (soundcore.o was not found in the module search path) { I had enabled modular sound } The second error is as follows: mount:fs type vfat not supported by kernel { I had enabled this during the configuration} I tried booting through my original kernel but still I get these errors. Hi There, I have recently installed debain on my machine. And its' nice :). I have the following doubts - 1> How can we browse through the dselect (Select), which gives the list of the applications. 2> If I delete the shortcuts to zope in rc2.d and upto rc5.d, will that be enuff to remove it from startup? Or will it have some bad consequnces? 3> RedHat used to take hell lot of time to check my filesystem. Debian does tht pretty quickly. Why is that so. The fstab entry is the same in both the cases. 4> How can I install rpms in Debian or will i have to install thru tars? Pine is not distributed by default with Debian distro because it doesnt come under the GPL but u can d/l it seperatly from their website. OT : VPNs across proxies

Hello, Can someone please explain the following? HOST1 belongs to NETWORK1. NETWORK1 has a proxy server and a firewall which connect it to the internet. HOST2 belongs to NETWORK2 and is a VPN server. Now, HOST1 acts as a VPN client, goes thru the proxy and the firewall and initiates a session with the VPN server. Thus depending on HOST2, certain services of NETWORK2 are now available to HOST1. Is the reverse true? ie can HOST2 access any of the services of NETWORK1, thru the connection established above? Thanks a lot. hey folks the 2.4.5 kernel CHANGES document recommends mkinitrd-2.5-1. Now, i got the source rpm, but my version of rpm cant handle the new rpms. I've searched high and low for a tarball, but to no avail. Why do we hate Windows?

I have seen many Linux users (Linux users in general and not just linuxers) referring to Windows or it's apps in rather demeaning way e.g. window$,win....,M$ Win.., windoze, etc. Why are we so intolerant ? I mean we have been using this OS since it's arrival .Most of us (I am not sure but I guess) have dual boot system . I am not professing the use of Windows but I think it is imperative for us to understand that Windows is here to stay ,at least in the desktop environment . Also I think Windows is affordable for most users ( OEM stuff ) .So I think the argument that Windows costs a fortune is not true. In Linux too we have commercial distributions ( Suse,Corel, Red Hat Deluxe Workstation,etc..) whose costs are comparable to that of Windows 95 or 98 . So the question is why do we hate Windows so much ? New Kernel

Hi I just compiled a new kernel from the 2.4.0 sources. During the configuration I configured the OSS sound modules to be selected and integrated the driver for my sound card cs4232 (Crystal) into the kernel *not as a loadable module*. Listen to this cyberage stuff: I applied to BSNL a few days back as for VSNL I have to do 95 code now which becomes very costly. Previously I had 172222 connectivity at local charges. Now BSNL application has been sent almost 3 weeks back and when i called them today someone blamed the privatization process. "Private ho gaya to gadbad ho gaya. problem with java

i have REDHAT 7.1 and jdk1.3 the jdk is in the /usr/java directory.initially i was not able to compile my java programs using jdk1.3 but i was able to compile with kaffe's javac.then i modfied the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variabe to point to the lib.jvm.so file in the jre directory.after settinfg the CLASSPATH variable to the present working directory i was able to compile my java program .after this when i try to run the .class file with java .class filename (without ofcourse the .class extension ) nothing happens the shell hangs cause idont get the commandprompt again.initially i thought it was because of the size of the java program cause i was porting a fairly lage application.but then i tried a simple program and it dint work either. any help,or links will be appreciated. ____________________________________________________ http://www.monsterindia.com - The Best Jobs. lilo screen notcoming

Hi luggers. I am re installing RH 6.2,during installation, after the Disk Druid Partition Screen , LILO configuration , with default OS selection , MBR or not , etc should come. That screen dosent come , instead it straight goes to the time setting/followed by formatting/installing packages. I am using a 32 Mb boot, 128 mb swap,(both linux native) , 1302 mb / (winfat32), in disk druid. and if LILo screen dosent come , how do i make sure the LILO gets installed to help me at boot time. ttyS1 on Linux on i815

Hello, Is there any special configuration required for ttyS1 on Linux to work on i815 chip motherboards? I can see it detects ttyS00/ttyS01 but my modem/mouse only works on ttyS0. COM2(ttyS1) resides on seperate card. It doesnt work even on windows. So I wonder if it is COM2 or something else? Amish.

Problem installing Linux

I'm trying to install Linux 7.1 on my friend's comp .Here is the configuration: PIII 866 ,815e Chipset,128 RAM,20 GB HDD The partition is 15+5.I deleted 5GB to make room for Linux. Windows ME is present on the 15 GB partition .Now during setup when I add mount point / in Disk Druid I get error that boot partition>1024 cylinders. I checked out Fdisk instead of Disk Druid and found that the cylinders available are in the range somwhere between 1800 to 2000 (Sorry, I forgot exact numbers). I have read that latest lilo supports >1024 cylinders .Where should I download lilo from? After downloading how can I "tell" the setup to install the latest LILO instead of it's default. One of our ilug members had similar prob and Philip had suggested : Install your system as usual, but choose not to use lilo. How do I install the system (I can't create / )? Antialiasing in X

Folks, I have a query. Does the X server do antialiasing? Because whenever I try viewing the ps or pdf files the fonts are horribly rendered. And generally my X looks grubby. Is this a problem with any specific version of X? I have an accelerated (Mach64) server running with 32bit color depth. Also I have seen some GNU/Linux boxes with KDE 2 where the fonts were rendered properly. Is this the doing of KDE? I dont have KDE and run GNOME+Enlightenment/fwm. I like GNOME and KDE but these are memory hungry desktops . Multitasking becomes little difficult due to this . Following is output of free while running XMMS and Kmail The values are in MB total used *free* shared buffers cached Mem: 60 59 1 0 1 29 -/+ buffers/cache: 29 31 Swap: 156 1 155 Notice the drastically low value of free memory. The situation is pretty much the same with GNOME. Please suggest some lightweight desktop environment which doesn't eat so much memory.

[OT] Possible virus, can anyone confirm

I received a file named Book3_26.xls.pif in my mail. I suspect this to be a virus because of the way the filename is masked to show up as an excel sheet in default windows installs. IMPORTANT: This was sent to me by someone who has my address in your addressbook. Anyone using windows, and having my address in your addressbook, please check your system. The virus is probably harmless through mail because of a stupid problem. There's an extra = at the end of the base 64 encoded file, which means it cannot be decoded, at least not by standards compliant decoders. OE may still decode it. Don't know about NSMessenger. A simple inspection of the attachment tells you that. I extracted the file, and ran strings on it. It gave me this: BFD: BFD internal error, aborting at coffcode.h line 763 in styp_to_sec_flags BFD: Please report this bug. This seems to be a problem with strings. (strings on Solaris works) I then did a file on it and found it to be a Win32 executable (surprise!). I then did a less on the file to see what was in it. I found a lot of things, including the following (edited to fit): Content-Disposition: quoted-printable 8bit 7bit octet-stream plain mixed Content-Transfer-Encoding: ; charset= ; boundary=" Content-Type: application mixed _Outlook_Express_message_boundary Outlook Express MIME messages encoding and decoding X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 MIME-Version: 1.0 date: Organization: Subject: To: From: along with three letter abbreviations of days of the week and months of the year and a lot more. I believe it may be the former, though its size (173KB) seems to suggest it does a lot more than just send email. Towards the fourth quarter of the file, I found actual excel stuff. KDE Desktop

Hi guys, I am using PCQ Linux 7.1 on p3 810 machine with KDE as my desktop (recently installed). The resolution set is too high. If i change the resolution with ctrl-alt-+ then i can see better, however, the desktop screen gets bigger than my monitor. How do i resize it and yet see with the right font size ? I tried configuring the desktop, increasing the font size and increasing the resolution, but the fonts still are small. How do i set it right. Compiled Kernel

Hi guys, I recently downloaded and compiled a new kernel 2.4.4 But, whenever i boot into this kernel, i am not able to use linuxconf, mount, etc since they are broken. When i boot into the old kernel, i still able to. What could be the reason. Will i have to install newer versions or have i done something wrong while compiling. If the IP is say 202.54.1.18 whois 202.54.1.18(a)whois.apnic.net shud give u the results. Hello, I am having a few problems. I use a cross over utp cable to connect my win box to LINUX box I am able to ping each other's Ip from another computer that means the connection works. I have enabled the FTP Telnet and Http from NETSYSV to run at boot time This is what I want to achieve 1.proxy through linux 2. remote admin through Windows 3.running web server on linux I am unable to open http:// of linux box though linux can approach the localserver as well as the web server on my Win box. using http://90.0.1.0 What is the problem here ? changing hostname

I tried to change my hostname from the file /etc/hosts but the hostname remained the same.Now I found this /etc/sysconfig/network file which had my hostname.I changed the hostname and now my hostname is changed. Is this the correct procedure to change the hostname ? Now when I run startx I seem to get following message: hostname lookup failure I can't read all the messages as the x server now displays the gray screen. I can work normally with the net and mail. Folks, I think Philip said "It's okay to use windows if you use a pirated copy. Just don't pay Microsoft for it." come come, people! Was he really serious? No one, repeat, NO one is forcing anybody to use Microsoft products. People use them because they, for various reasons, find no better alternative. Microsoft are within their rights to charge anything they want for any part of their products (someone mentioned that you get the OS but not the API). If you do not like that but still buy them, then it is you who is the sucker, not them unethical. Microsoft is a company like any other. It is a commercial venture who has to look after the prosperity of its shareholders. They also have to protect themselves from the competition by devising schemes and strategies to beat them. In this they are no different from any other company (take the example of the Cola wars). In this business environment, the stronger, smarter one survives. Very much like nature. RMS is a person. More than that he is an academician. He is one of that breed for whom creativity is reward enough - that is their life passion. I have lived among academicians all my life. There are scientists and researchers who sweat and work their butts off, expanding the frontiers of science and human understanding - on a flat salary. Is it possible to imagine a Mathematician selling his proof for money to different Universities? Why, the mathematician who developed most of game theory, John Nash jr., on which much of modern economics is based, did not become a millionaire (or receive _any_ monetary benefit out of it). Here it is learning for the sake of the thirst, not money. Even as near as till 50 years back all pure sciences used to enjoy this kind of freedom. The freedom of not only sharing but distributing knowledge. RMS feels computers also fall into this category, he being part of the breed. I for one agree with him. Whatever, if ever, work I do in this field will be there for all. But why do we insist that everyone should follow this way of life. Trade and commerce are as old as our civilisations themselves. They have their valid place in society. For eg. Edison and the founder of Gillette tried and failed many time before they perfected and _sold_ their products. There were some like Vincent Van Gaug who painted to pass the time(to keep his sanity maybe?) and there were other who did it because some King commissioned them. Both is art. The point is, the driving force for some is money and for someone something else. We cannot call one correct and the other wrong. To make use of intellectual property for the better of all or the better of oneself has to be the decision of the intellectual himself. For whatever cribbs I have read about Microsoft and proprietary software, the best answer I can think up is the GNU & OpenSource movements themselves. These happened because someone (many ones) were dissatisfied with the situation and took steps to change things. It brought a lot of like minded people together, and they worked for the good of all. What is most, MOST important IMHO, is the availability of freedom for such behavior. People were free to choose. and they choose to change things. Other chose to stick with Microsoft(etc.). Both have their reasons and I feel both are right. As FSF is _free_ to choose and decide its ideology and strategy, so is Microsoft _free_ to choose its priorities. And so are you _free_ to choose between them and the others... This is the real freedom. Does a restaurant, who has a popular special dish, disclose its secret recipe? If people feel that they do require the source code for further modifications (I seriously doubt the number outside of computer crazies) and if Microsoft(etc.) refuses, then they have alternatives. They should and often do ignore/boycott Microsoft. But then because Microsoft does not agree with your point of view does not mean they are wrong. They never said that they are in the knowledge sharing business. They are making software which will enable you to use your hardware in such a way as to increase your efficiency(their claim), do things you could not otherwise do (mind you, here I mean for eg. the 'act of sending email' not the software to do it), and be more productive, then they are within their right to sell this software - with all strings attached. If there is any other better alternative to them available, they will be wiped out of the market. As for exorbitant charges, compare vegetable prices at Kurla and Santacruz (W). People often charge because a lot of people pay. Red Hat dares to charge Rs2000+ for their manuals (does it cost so much to print?) because they have made a name and can. In society people are driven by various things - ego, pride, creative urge, credit from others, lust or money, need for money, philanthropy etc. So long as these things adhere to the common moral code of conduct we all agree to, we can smirk at some of them but we cannot call any of them wrong. --------------------- what is it that we live this whole life for? as a human being, I feel that creating something is about the only thing... to live life day in and day out in a mundane routine is not for me... I should make a difference... walk a new path... or die trying... To want is to sin, I feel... want is recursive... with no terminating condition. The path is dangerous... but to walk it is itself a victory. knowledge is decocted essence of information... Hi Vijay, Actually speaking its just plain useless to run Linux on Palm Hardware, reasons: 1. Palm uses DragonBall which does not have memory protection, hence no pre-emptive multitasking. 2. Existing Palm apps cannot run, they are built to run for PalmOS. Nikhil, An interesting topic of discussion!! Linuxers hate Windoze and Micro$oft because of it's lousy ways of marketing, and business practises, and the buggy software it produces. Windoze is here to stay because of the ease of use and being popular, NOT because it is well-designed with well thought-of OS concepts. How many OS concepts of Windows do you think are original to Microsoft? For that matter, how many original ideas do you think Microsoft came up with? Ask them. They will send you a list of all the companies from where most their software has been stolen or purchased. It is not appreciated if you steal someone else's valuables and try to tell the world that it is yours. Nobody is going to have any respect towards such a person or company. There is a long list of companies that Microsoft screwed up, because they were its competetors. Have you heard of a beautiful OS called "BeOS"? Microsoft spoiled a deal that Apple was to make with Be, to implement that OS on Apple. Then, Apple went ahead on its own and came out with Mac OS X. As it has always been doing, M$ messed Be completely without mercy; without even recognizing the fact that BeOS is MUCH MORE beautiful and elegant than Windows. I agree with you that Windows is here to stay, not because of it's strength as an OS, but because of our human nature of being conservative and because of the wide variety of software/shareware available. Frankly, I would hesitate to call Windows as an Operating System. Microsoft, having some of the best talent in the world, is doing the worst job - of creating buggy software, and releasing it without checking it thoroughly. How can you think of any company to be so irresponsible towards the world, unless they are pretty sure that we are dumb? And, when someone advertise their bugs, they get annoyed and say that they have to inform Microsoft to protect the users. Funny, isn't it? They dont do their job well, and dont credit others who does. You said Windows is more afforable than Linux. Do you know that you can get a Linux CD just by paying for the media and shipping charges? So, how much are you really paying for the OS? Please compare that with Microsoft's OS prices, and you will realize the fact. Also, Linux is tested, being open source, whereas Windows is never fully tested - you come to know about a bug only if Microsoft releases it, or someone else finds it. Still you are not convinced of their monopolistic and stupid practises? Any big company try to acquire or kill it's competitors, so that it can survive and dominate. But not as mercilessly and unethically as Microsoft. They as well tried to kill Java, but thanks to Sun Microsystems and others; they couldn't do that! Being popular and widely used doesnt mean that it is good or the best. Do you know that in the process of doing so many stupid things; they once tried to migrate Hotmail servers to Windows NT from Solaris? They soon have to accept the fact that NT can't do it. Well, we can write a whole book about the evil-doings of Microsoft, and the annonying behaviour of it's OSes. Let me conclude by saying that Linux is here to stay. forwarding in Qmail

Hi guys, I have a domain foo.com and pop accounts abc(a)foo.com How do i send mail to pqr(a)foo.com . Here pqr is not a user on my local mail server (qmail) but an external user who downloads mail directly from the net from a different location. Earlier i used forwarding of mails for users not found locally, to pqr(a)mail.foo.com, collected the same on the net by creating a sub-domain mail on foo.com, pop accounts pqr for receiving and forwarding the same to their respective accounts. Now, with many new pop accounts being added, is there an alternative and simpler method of forwarding mail for such accounts. Why do we hate Windows?

I have seen many Linux users (Linux users in general and not just linuxers) referring to Windows or it's apps in rather demeaning way e.g. window$,win....,M$ Win.., windoze, etc. Why are we so intolerant ? I mean we have been using this OS since it's arrival .Most of us (I am not sure but I guess) have dual boot system . I am not professing the use of Windows but I think it is imperative for us to understand that Windows is here to stay ,at least in the desktop environment . Also I think Windows is affordable for most users ( OEM stuff ) .So I think the argument that Windows costs a fortune is not true. In Linux too we have commercial distributions ( Suse,Corel, Red Hat Deluxe Workstation,etc..) whose costs are comparable to that of Windows 95 or 98 . So the question is why do we hate Windows so much ? Rebuilding source RPMs and creating RPMS out of tarballs in RedHat 7.1

I recently installed PCQ's RedHat 7.1. I haven't looked into it much, but I've been having some problems with RPMs. In RedHat 6.2 and below, I could build binary RPMs from source RPMs with rpm --rebuild. tarballs with specs in them could be tackled with rpm -ta. Neither of these seem to work in RedHat 7.1, even though the man page mentions them as valid switches. Swap space

Over a few days I have realised that tar format of compresion is the more widely used format not only for backing up data locally on the hard disk but also for distribution of software. Making effective use of Pine - V ================================ As the final part of this not so exhaustive tutorial on pine, we will cover incoming folders, a feature that can really speed up the processing and archiving of email messages. We will look at them in conjunction with procmail, the most common mail filter in use today, and multiple mail servers. Before we start though, we need to know what incoming folders are. Put simply, incoming folders are folders that your mail comes in to; automatically. In a little more technical sense, these are the files that a Mail Delivery Agent appends your incoming mails to. Don't worry if you don't know what a mail delivery agent is or does, we'll figure it out later. Your inbox is an incoming folder, and is your default incoming folder. It's probably also your only incoming folder. For now, let's just enable the incoming folders feature in pine. In your configuration screen, move down to folder preferences, and enable incoming folders. That's it. Now, we can create folders in our incoming message folders collection, and have a delivery agent store messages in there. Move to the Folder List screen. I hope you know how to get there by now. My guess is that your in your incoming folders collection, with the selection over INBOX, and no other folders in that collection. We'll try and create a folder for a pop3 mailbox (imap is easier). I'm assuming here that you have a pop3 account somewhere, so if you don't, you're going to have to imagine this. If you're working on a unix box, then you could set up a local pop3 account for testing. Don't use the account that you are logged in as, because it would just use the same mailbox as your default INBOX. This could cause sharing violations. Now, add a folder using the A key. You are asked for the server on which your folder is. If we were using an imap server, we'd just enter the name of the server here. For example, if you have a vsnl.net address, your server would be mail.vsnl.net. Since we have to tell pine that it is a pop3 server, we add this to the server name with a slash. I'm going to add my yahoo account, so I'll put in pop.mail.yahoo.com/pop3 I now have to specify the folder in which my mails are stored. If you use imap, then your server will support server folders, but in the case of pop3, you have only one folder, and this is your inbox. Specify the folder as inbox. As a nickname, you can enter anything. I prefer to call it yahoo, so that I know that it's my yahoo mail. Just make sure the nick is unique within your incoming folder collection. Now, if you select this folder, you are prompted for a username and password. If the login is successful, you see your message index. If you have other pop3 or imap accounts, add folders for them here. This method of reading your remote mail makes sense only if you want to leave it on the remote server always and never keep a local copy. If you want to download all your mail though, there are better methods that use programs like fetchmail and procmail. I won't go into the set up and configuration of fetchmail and procmail. That probably deserves a tutorial series of its own. Over here, we'll just make a small procmailrc file to sort mails on sender or recipient to different folders. First change to your mail directory and create a directory where all your incoming folders will be. This is the physical location of your incoming folders. % cd ~/mail % mkdir incoming Create a file called .procmailrc in your home directory, and put the following into it: :0: *To: .*linuxers mail/incoming/lug :0: *From: .*someone.special mail/incomin/personal :0: *From: .*somejerk mail/incoming/boring Then, start pine, and create incoming folders for each of the above. When prompted for the host, leave the entry blank. It defaults to a local folder. When asked for the folder name, enter the path to the folder from your home directory. This would be the same as what you put in your .procmailrc file. The first would be mail/incoming/lug, and its nick would be lug, I guess. Similarly, do the other two. We now wait till we get mails that satisfy these rules. Let's hope at least two of our folders have received something really soon. Assuming that you've now received some mail in your Inbox, lug folder and personal folder, start up pine, and go to your message index. Start reading your messages, press Tab when you finish reading a message. The next new message should automatically open up. When all messages in your inbox have been read, pine will prompt you to read messages in your next incoming folder. Your incoming folders are sorted alphabetically, but since you don't have any mail in boring yet (we hope), the first folder it will go to is linuxers. Note: INBOX will always be the first folder, even if you have fodlers that start with AA. Pine will show you the message index of the next incoming folder. Similarly, pine will run through all incoming folders that have received new mail since you last visited the folder (or started pine, whichever was later). What this means, is that if you visit a folder, but don't read any of the mails in there, the folder is still considered seen, and will not be visited through Tab cycling. You can still view it from the folder list though. So far, we've been able to sort our mail using procmail, and view all mails on a single subject together. One more feature which helps here, is the message index sorting. Pressing $ in the message index allows you to sort the index in any of 10 sort orders. I've found, that for discussion groups, it's often helpful to sort by thread or ordered subject. Although we can read all related mail together, we still need to manually sort them out for archiving; assuming of course that you archive some mails. I archive my lug mails, as well as those from other discussion groups, but not those that I get in my inbox. It's a pain to have to type in the entire archive folder name everytime I want to save a mail. It would have been much nicer if pine could do this for me automatically. Well, pine does. Let's get back to the configuration screen, and add a few incoming archive folders. Move down to incoming-archive-folders, and press enter. Enter the name of your incoming folder followed by its archive folder, separated by a space. I have an entry like this for my lug mails: incoming-archive-folders = lug lug Notice that I can use the same name for my incoming and archive folders, because they are in different collections. If you need to enter more than one pair, separate pairs by commas. If you already have a list, you can insert a new entry anywhere by pressing enter on the item before which you want to insert. Deletion of individual entries is also possible. Now, everytime you leave an incoming folder, you will be prompted to save all read, but not deleted messages into the corresponding archive folder. You can avoid this prompt, by setting auto-move-read-msgs in Advanced User Preferences. You will still be prompted to expunge deleted messages in your incoming folders. This can be avoided by setting expunge-without-confirm. This flag will only affect incoming folders, and you will still be prompted for expunging deleted mails in your other folders. How to do that automatically, is left for you to find out. This concludes the tutorial series on making effective use of pine. There's a lot more that can be done, but it's up to you to experiment with all the different configuration options. Some features can only be set through the configuration file .pinerc in your home directory. The global configuration file is usually /etc/pine.conf. There's also a file called /etc/pine.conf.fixed. This is one of the security features of pine. If you run a site where users are not allowed to change certain options in their pine set ups, then you can put those fixed values in pine.conf.fixed. Pine reads configuration files in the order pine.conf, .pinerc, pine.conf.fixed, with each file overriding settings in the earlier ones. I have a RH 6.2 setup with DHCP server, DNS Caching server, IPChains enabled for net sharing, on a normal Dial-Up connection, which is working perfectly fine for my LAN. Now, we are going to ADD a DSL connection to the same setup, and same purpose. For which we will be adding a 10/100 mbps LAN card. Since, the review of DSL connection at my place is not good, I wish to continue with my Dial-Up connection, whenever there is a bandwidth problem. [OT] How copy protection schemes are implemented

There was a thread about how to protect CDs etc against copying - basic copy protection techniques. When checking one of my ancient archives before blowing it away entirely, I happened upon the following piece of code that was written to circumvent a basic key-disk floppy based copy protection scheme. I had written it to show someone how easy these schemes were to get around (actually, some, based on hardware hasps and self-modifying code are pretty tough, so beware!). I reproduce the code here for anyone who is interested in the guts of a fairly trivial copy protection scheme and its antidote. The code is pretty heavily commented, since it was in the nature of a tutorial, so that you should not have any trouble following it if you are at all familiar with x86 architecture and the DOS/ BIOS system call scheme. Old timers like me who date back to the days of the 2 x 360 KB FDD based PCs may wax nostalgic at the mention of Central Point Software's CopyIINokey (nokey.com). Incidentally, although this code works, it probably will render your PC's floppy unusable without a reboot, since it does not do any process based vaildation. Also, although it circumvents a copy protection scheme, PLEASE DO NOT USE IT FOR SOFTWARE PIRACY! red hat install problem

Hi I created 2 partitions , / and /swap and set their mount points on a secondary 2.1 Gb hdd.(slave) (hdb) The loading takes place frm MBR (which i figure has to be my master 4.3 hdd)(hda). I cant seem to boot into win/dos at boot time , LILO doesnt give any options after pressing TAB. How do i reclaim my data on windows ? How do I restore to original system , I distinctly remember deleting HDA's partitions for the mount points from the list before loading linux redhat 6.2. hi there guys, i wanted to install opera ( the web browser) for linux and needed to upgrade qt for this purpose. it seems qt 2.2 needs libmng.so.0, s i got this file (libmng.so.0) too. can anyone tell me where to place this lib file so that the qt install sees it. i have tried copying it to /lib , but i still get an error msg. plz hlp bye navin
