[Announce] ayttm

Announcing the release of Ayttm 0.2.1 You can get it at http://www.nongnu.org/ayttm/ Ayttm is a fork of Everybuddy, and aims to, at first, address its problems: * stability: Ayttm should not segfault when you use it. * intuitivity: Ayttm should be almost instantly usable by my mother ;) * simplicity: almost useless prefs should be hidden, reserved to "advanced" users, and things have to work without wondering what this or that will produce. * (internet) accessibility: Ayttm's CVS and releases should be available 24/7. That's why it's on savannah. Ayttm is maintained by Colin Leroy. * Important notes about this release - There has been a name change. This script Block's YM, MSN, BOL!

Hi all, I was going through the mailing archive of some site and found the queries regarding blocking yahoo and msn messenger using iptable. There is a small script which I have written to block the yahoo,msn and rediff messenger using iptable. I thought to share it with you all as it might help some one on the list to block them. u can download the script from http://www.linzsystem.com/iptmess.tgz Took around a week to compile this huge list of servers and it definitely works Mohan -- "...very few phenomena can pull someone out of Deep Hack Mode, with two noted exceptions: being struck by lightning, or worse, your *computer* being struck by lightning." ILUG-Bom IRC Channel

Ilug-Bom now has it's own IRC channel. We are called #ilug-bom and are located on irc.freenode.net - Home of many popular open source projects' channels. To learn more about IRC go to http://www.irchelp.org. For the ignorant people, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's a medium which offers the opportunity of Real Time communication between a large number of entities - Basically, the biggest collection of chat rooms. To connect to IRC you need a client like X-Chat, BitchX, KvIRC, mIRC(for Windows users) etc. To connect to freenode type /server irc.freenode.net Once you are connected, type /join #ilug-bom That should get you into the channel. If you have a constant connection to the net, please come and stick around, as we would like to see this # grow. mgetty compilation options

How do I find out whether the 'mgetty' binary installed from its rpm is compiled with -DAUTO_PPP or not? Or going further and generalizing, how do I find the flags that were used to compile a binary? I have configured my machine as a dialin server. Currently, mgetty accepts the username and then calls /bin/login to accept and authenticate the password from the peer. But I want pppd to authenticate the peer rather than /bin/login. So mgetty should call pppd rather than /bin/login. The file /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config has the option for doing this. But a comment in the file says that mgetty has to be compiled with -DAUTO_PPP option for it to work. I suspect that the currently installed mgetty binary isn't compiled with -DAUTO_PPP because even after enabling /AutoPPP/ in login.config, the remote client still gets a bash prompt after authenticating which indicates /bin/login being called. I read the installed mgetty documentation but it doesn't say anything about the AutoPPP option being used while compiling or not. -- Abhir Joshi http://education.vsnl.com/abhir/

i wud first of all like 2 tell u that i'm new 2 linux & have just started using it full time. so i request u all 2 plz forgive my so many questions in the past few mails. i don't want 2 give the impression, that i'm a good 4 nothing guy with no work 2 do other than ask questions. but i feel that the questions that i ask are of very trivial nature & will help me a lot in getting a strong foothold of my newly discovered OS. my doubt is that i have an epson 480 color stylus printer & i don't know how 2 change its cartridge. thanx 4 all the help! -- Pradnyesh Sawant ( The Doubtfire ) Ph: 27703060 B.E. But, that takes a long time to code and debug. Whereas, doing things in a more higher-level abstracted language makes development and deployment easier. So, basically the choice depends on the requirements. You might want to look at the different scripting languages available out there and decide which one to use. It's not very difficult to implement a solution like this one. Why, maybe you could try out the Korn Shell - it has support for regex, sockets and other goodies built-in! Nosferatu

I am trying to compare C and Java, based solely on my experience. What I meant is OS, if we all use/fix GNU/Linux as OS then do we really need Java? Because Java programs are slow and my experience is that C programs can be written faster than Java. Also as far as I know, Java is written in C too. Amish. P.S. I agree many would debate, so I say its my opinion, experience and belief.

my cdrom is giving problems?

i have a samsung 52x cdrom drive, which has recently started giving me problems it used 2 work fine with my previous rhl7.1 installation.now i use rhl7.3. whenever i try 2 use the "eject" option after right clicking the cdrom icon on the desktop, the hdd is accessed for some secs, then the cdrom light glows for some secs, but the cdrom tray doesn't open. the same thing happens even if i try 2 manually eject the cdrom tray by pressing the button below the cdrom tray. i don't seem 2 understand the problem. the cdrom drive is 2 yrs old, & i haven't done ne cd drive cleaning since. is it bcoz of this? also plz throw some light as 2 how do i clean the cdrom drive. -- Pradnyesh Sawant ( The Doubtfire ) Ph: 27703060 B.E.
