Konqueror Image rendering bug

Hello Lists, I browse using Konqueror with Images "turned off" so that large size images aren't fetched. (or for that matter any image, irrespective of its size). (sometimes, or at times use Mozilla Firefox) As per rules of W3C, the "alt" tag is compulsory for images, and Konqueror doesn't seem to read that attribute and display it when images are turned off. Therefore, I have filed a bug with kde's bug tracking system with Id 145224 (so that you can search the report of this bug). If you can vote for this bug, may be it'll get some attention and fixes for this will be applied. Konqueror has known to be pretty standards compliant and is the *fastest* browser (wow!, Ah! kacpid hogging CPU (with intel dual core)

Hi, I have this machine with a new mobo + intel dual core installed, running debian etch (kernel 2.6.18-4-686).. /proc/cpuinfo shows two processors.. the system as such seems slow with high enough latency.. and top shows kacpid constantly hogging.. 90-100% of CPU time always.., acpid is running, with thermal, fan, processor etc modules loaded.. what could be the issue? or how to fix it? has anyone faced similar issue with dual cores? (meanwhile i am compiling 2.6.20 with processor type dual core selected!) Karunakar

hi, as you know, NRC-FOSS (http://nrcfosshelpline.in/web/) is planning to start a node at Mumbai. This node will help to coordinate/facilitate foss related activities in Mumbai especially in the following areas: 1. promoting foss in formal and non-formal education 2. popularising foss in schools, colleges, industry and ngos in the maharashtra region 3. fostering the writing and development of foss code in the area. To this end we hope to facilitate at least a couple of meetings/installfests or linux demo days a month in various establishments as well as help coordinate activities. It goes without saying that we cant achieve anything without active participation of the LUG. The node will in all probability be hosted by VJTI and we are having a meeting with the management and the managements of other colleges on the 17th morning at VJTI. We would like to discuss the scope and functioning of the node with members of the community in the afternoon/evening. I know it is a working day, but I hope a good number of members will take some time off to participate. The meeting will take place at the VJTI and exact place and time will be announced depending on the response we get here. Hello Lists, (see header) I am using Kubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) on my second hdd and three applications, Konqueror, Konverstaion and Kopete (yes, KDE - Kyonki haha) on my MTNL Triband line, without specifying the DNS. The automatically accepted DNS was the IP address of the ADSL Router / Modem. (D-Link 502 T) I wasn't able to get updates using apt-get because, the command would fetch the first URL and become stagnant with no network activity over the ethernet LED. I finally, decided to add the DNS servers provided by MTNL, and wow! apt-get could finally understand what it is supposed to connect to and fetched updates. Phew! Why didn't the K affect the 'K'onsole. Some other underlying protocol, perhaps? BTW, I managed to install Firefox (1.5.0.11) and have bookmarked two links on installing Firefox 2.0 on *buntu. These updates consumes a lot of my bits, and that brings me to a question! Can I (if I get one) use the Kubuntu 6.06 DVD as a source for installing common applications (such as say GCC 3.x or 4.x, Java 1.4.x JRE 1.5.x etc?) [OT] Any telecom breakdown?

Killimg bad cd/dvd scan process.

Hello All, How does one kill a runaway bad cd/dvd reading process that does not allow any other program to run? Even in console, before one can log in and do ps -ax, it floods the screen with I/O error messages. Any keyboard shortcut to kill the process? Ctrl+C does not work. -- Regards, Rony.

firefox and X together take up 100% of cpu usage???

For the past few days i've been observing that when firefox is running continuously for some time (sometimes for minutes, sometime for hours), X and firefox are taking up 100% of cpu usage. Linux on Vista Installation Report.

Hello All, The installation went smoothly with no manual correction needed to grub. The machine was an HCL one with Pentium 2.8 Ghz. Dual Core, Gigabyte 955 mobo and 512 MB RAM with 15" LCD screen and DVD writer. OS was Vista Home basic. Kubuntu 7.04 64 bit was used to first boot live and test his Tata Indicom LG FWP. ( The Tata dealer had assured him of driver compatibility with Vista but after the purchase, could not keep it up. Tata CC guys put their hands up too.) The standard LG wvdial.conf worked and net was up and running. Installation was smooth just like other Kubuntus and after reboot we first booted into Vista to see if everything was ok. It was all fine. Since his 3rd partition was a 44 GB one, I had split it into 30 GB for FAT32, and the remaining for Linux root and swap. In Vista the 30 GB formatted vfat did not show up on My Computer. In the disk management, that partition was manually assigned a drive letter. Then it got visible and usable. For multimedia support in Kubuntu 7.04, I was looking for the repo list on the net but found nothing for Feisty. So from the same site http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/2663/how-to_get_full , the text '## Canonical 'Commercial' Repository deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu edgy-commercial main' was appended to the /etc/apt/sources.list file and the word 'edgy' was replaced with 'feisty'. In the command, 'sudo apt-get install totem-xine totem-xine-firefox-plugin libxine-extracodecs flashplugin-nonfree msttcorefonts sun-java5-plugin skype banshee streamtuner xmms realplay f-spot' (remove totem packages as they are for gnome) some of the softwares are not available so apt-get will throw errors. Eliminate the ones not available and the rest essential ones will get downloaded. As it became late and net was slow, I had to leave and could not test multimedia support. Otherwise the system is up and running on the net. -- Regards, Rony.

hi everyone , i am a new user of linux , i have installed mandriva , but i am having some problem in the installation of lan card , as written in the manual i have done half the step , and in between i need to do a compilation step where the file sc92031.c is to be compiled and the output should be sc92031.o , i tried to compile it but errors are coming , i think some library files are not being found while compilation , can anyone tell me that what are those library files and where can i get them.....

Anyone willing to either help build the network, using known mesh technology and community owned and run hardware, or to build projects (art, games, catalogues, collaborative performances etc) that will showcase network capabilities, or to research open technologies to optimally strengthen the network, or to research and develop new technology layers on the network, or to collectively build or provide access to storage layers to power data resources, or *anything* not covered in the previous descriptions but have the possibility of growing value for all, please do join in and let's get the ball rolling. fyi the first mesh node was built by LUGgers at HBCSE last month, and this list has grown out of the person-to-person discussions following that, to look for ways to bring this technology to bear for this *urban* area. Aside from Nagarjuna and myself, artists and educators and techie enthusiasts are coming together in the hope that more such efforts will catalyse the Mumbai mesh into self-sustaining growth. Wall command like utility/command in Linux

I have 25 thin clients with builtin mozilla browser. I have a LAMP applicaiton running on a server. The users are accessing the application on their thin client using the builtin mozilla browser. My problem is : 1) when i want to shutdown the server , i didn't know whether somebody is using the application or not. 2) I have another server on which the users are logged in through X session called on their thin clients. If some/any users forgots to log-off his/her login then I didn't come to know that the users is not doing anythink. Is there any wall like command/utility , thru. which i can pass on a message which will be displayed on all the active users as well as the message will be passed to all the http users ? -Jagdish

Linux with Vista

Hello All, A friend of mine bought a branded pc with Vista installed. However no additional peripherals work as their drivers are not available in vista. I suggested that he install Linux in dual boot and he has agreed. I only want to know if Linux and Vista will live peacefully and boot from Grub.
