It could also be the heatsink has dried up. this is a common issue, do you hear any specific sounds when you try and put the machine on? If you want, you can get the mobo repaired too (if possible), if you are in mumbai, you can go to esskay in lamington road and give it to them. If its the heatsink paste, you can get Arctic Silver 5. Its an amazing product. Just make sure you read the online application manual. A single drop (size of uncooked grain of rice) is generally good enough for a p4 system. Not to mention it brings down the core temperature upto 8-10 degrees when you clean the fan + apply this. The cooler your machine, the faster/better it performs. Alternatively if you are considering a new system, amd's are okay, but if you want to be future proof, the core 2 duo would be a better bet. AMD64 gives you the 64 architecture, but its still officially an emulated architecture.Unless you went for the opterons and stuff. The core2 would give you the benefits of SMP (if enabled in your kernel). I normally prefer AMD products to Intel (from the early 700mhz duron, and more with the t-birds and even more since the athlons), have always favoured the underdogs, but bottom line is still performance. But this would however mean a bit more expenses now, as compared to performance you gain in the long run. Shaving cream ran out. Suggestions for a new, shaving cream/foam

Hi, My shaving foam is about to run out. Its Gillette currently. I'm wondering if I should perhaps switch to another brand? Gillette is too expensive. Problem checking /home with fsck

hi, A few days ago I faced a strange problem when I booted my laptop which runs Dapper on an i-386 and it went for a file system scan after 30 mounts it detected file system errors in root partition which got solved when I ran fsck from the recovery shell but the problem in my /home partition persisted Everytime I restarted the laptop it gave the following lines: buffer i/o error on sectors contiguously from 2661645 (i hope i m not missing any digit) This took 20 minutes because it was going line by line for each location Then I tried to fix the prolem in recovery mode to see what was happening WHAT I FOUND OUT WAS There was a problem for which "ide: error not recognised" was returned,and then SeekDriveReady returned error in the LBA sector...What else could go wrong was the question? Then it logged me in and strangely I found everything was working fine even configurations in my home directory.... So the first thing I did was in fstab i removed check of /home so tht it doesnt exasperate me for 20 mins filling my screen with buffer i/o error n then location counting....................... I will probably check it again with parted because fsck failed again for those sectors Now can anyone has any idea about an idea tht what might be wrong n everything is fine so it is worth bothering or should I go n sue Acer for a new hard disk cos my warranty covers me till mid JUNE.... Password less scp

Greetings, I have been facing this problem for the last couple of days. I have 2 remote Linux Servers located at Mumbai and chennai. I need to copy files to my other machine in the night. Problem is that scp command asks for password on every execution. redhat knowledge base ( http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_45_8645.shtm) has highligted a way to use scp command w/o any password. Despite me using their steps, i am unable to do the same. Can some one help me ??? Rgds Gopi

hello, I am going to try an experiment with printer sharing. I will like to know how to share a printer installed on a fedora machine? by the way aside from printer I had one more doubt. if I share a folder of a fedora machine via samba, is there any thing additional I need to do for accessing it from another fedora machine? I know how to access a linux based system from the windows machine but I don't know about sharing computers and accessing folders on a linux to linux machine. may be I am missing some thing stupid. so kindly guide me. Hi I have the following system Intel P4-2.4ghz processor on a D845gvsr mobo 256mb RAM Samsung combo drive(CD-R +DVD) 2 40gig HDD. The whole system was assembled in Oct 2004 Recently my pc stopped working and I was told that it is a motherboard problem and needs to be replaced. Now I am looking for a mobo+processor combo and many friends suggested AMD64 based processors. Points to be considered 1. My usage is limited to basic office applications, surfing, songs, videos, chat etc ie a desktop user. 2. I need to run some games on it for my kid and as such also need XP as my primary OS 3. Being a linux enthu most of my usage is on a Linux distro. 4. I also try out various new distros. Is it advisable to go for a AMD processor and motherboard combo. If yes---What are the suitable configs (AMD+mobo) If no----- What are the alternatives (Pentium etc) Thanks Ninad

I see that kword allows you to read a pdf file, however it doesn't let you export it back to pdf. OO 2.0 on the other hand lets you export your document into pdf format, however doesn't let you import one for editing. TIA, Chiragz

apologies for improper use of the language, was used to the sms lingo. extremely sorry. i have reframed my issue:- i had installed kubuntu recently n then ubuntu too(both from the cd), and in both, i could not use the internet, oculd not open web sites. i downloaded the sify installer for linux, dn followed te instructions as was written in the manual/readme file. i set the ip, dns everything but i still could not use the internet.when i logged in, it woud simply show the timestamp ,nothing further. could u help me out pls i got the reply when "ping"ed the gateway, but when i tried logging in using the sify installer, it would simply not connect, it is supposed to show my account details,etc., but it would simply not do so apologies again to mrugesh n vihan ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer? ubuntu vs knoppix

Just curious, I know distro wars are bad, and well alot of people just say use what best suits you, I am just curious if anyone has had first hand experience between the 2. And if so which would be a more "debian" /apt way to go. And also have a nice clear interface to deal with out of the box, not to mention the support and ease of use. A friend of mine is strongly considering moving away from all MS products. So much so he sold his xbox 360 and has been collecting for a while to be able to buy the ps3. I told him if hes loading up linux on his ps3, he might as well get the exposure on his desktop. After all, that baby will smoke his current AMD 2000. So which distro would you guys suggest and between those 2 and if you have a specific reason why, would be nice so i can tell him. Also if i could grab a DVD off someone (maybe couriered) would be nice. Else I could just download it and have it in a week. Thanks, Satish
