Hi all, I am planning to buy a new cell. Someone suggested A1010 which seemed to be excellent value for money. I searched some more and found A1000/A768i/A1200 with comparable features and Linux OS. IIRC, jtd has an A768i. I wanted some review of these mobiles. Tata Cable Broadband

Hi, Has anyone used Tata's Cable Broadband (not Tata DSL). I have been using Exatt Cablenet all this while and I am really bugged with their downtime. Tata has just recently launched cable broadband in my locality and the introductory schemes are really cheap. However I am concerned about the authentication mechanism. It seems that they are using some browser based authentication scheme so I doubt if there is any problem in connecting through linux. Playing VCDs in Ubuntu.

Hello All, I gave one more shot at trying to play VCDs and DVDs in Ubuntu 6.10 on my desktop. All instructions given on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats were followed but still VCDs would not be opened in Totem. A DVD would play upto the menu but the 'Play' link that comes after that on the screen would not come and the screen would simply remain blank. From the net a useful page was found http://alternativenayk.wordpress.com/2007/01/20/playing-vcds-on-ubuntu-linu… Using apt, gxine and gxineplugins packages were downloaded and that finally helped in playing VCDs as well as DVDs. Gxine has good audio settings options that allow you to set audio levels in order to avoid distortion. The same procedure was followed in the Acer 2428 laptop running Edubuntu 6.06 LTS. I am able to get videos for VCDs as well as DVD but no sound. The system too did not have sound so some ALSA packages were downloaded based on their look and feel. System sound is up but no movie sounds. I am able to record my voice using 'Sound Recorder' but the playback is faint. Could anyone help me out on this? fedora support and reliability question.

hello all, just one question about fedora and this is really very serious because I have got contracts from 3 other big organisations for converting their enterprise to gnu/linux. I found that fedora is having more hardware support than any distro for the latest hardware like ggc mother boards etc. now my question is that what kind of reliability can we expect with fedora and what is the level of support we get? for example ubuntu has a "LTS" meaning Long Time Support policy. I think fedora obviously can't provide this because this is purely community driven project. I am not so sure about mandriva whether is is purely community driven or an organisation is supporting it. any ways the point is that can fedora have that kind of support because new versions come every now and then so can we look for support on fedora? for example if I am using fedora core 6 how long can I get updates and new packages for the same? thanking all. Generally a domain can not be registered by anybody unless you do not renew registration. There is a very decent period given in between. Also I have never seen a domain name based pricing by any domain registrar for new name registrations let alone a renewal. So its out of question for a name renewal wherein the name is legally yours and you can very well shift the registrar if they refuse to play ball. I suppose also that in case of such problems being created by a registrar you can complain to ICANN or some such regional authority. problem with mounting usb drive in debian etch

Hello, i recently upgraded debian from sarge to etch (apt-get dist-upgrade), and since then my usb ain't getting detected. initially my /etc/fstab lines were as follows ### /dev/sda1 /media/usb1 vfat noauto,users,uid=500 0 0 /dev/sda2 /media/usb2 vfat noauto,users,uid=500 0 0 ### but now i get the following error: mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist i checked /dev and saw that "sda?" does not exist at all. but something called "usbdev[123].1_ep[00][81]" exists. using them, however gave me the following error: mount: /media/usb1/ is not a block device big brother google told to check /proc/partitions, but that shows only my HDD partitions, and doesn't show any information about the usb drive :( Thanks for all the help -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere. --Anon

[OT] Some Technology Observations.

Hello All, The Homi Bhabha Auditorium at TIFR is just like a cinema hall and it has a projector at the back just like a cinema projector but the difference is that it is a digital projector and for the first time I saw such a big cinema grade and screen size digital projector. Just as some TVs had come out with 3D vision where 2 images with different polarizations were interlaced and broadcast and then viewed through polarized specs, TIFR could also experiment with this technique and give 3D projection a try. Another use for the digital projector would be the future cinema concepts that the film industry is trying out. They plan to set up digital cinemas where the film is simultaneously released through broadband or satellite broadcasts in order to avoid piracy. It is also usefull for Movie On Demand systems where movies can be randomly selected for the particular session without waiting for the cans to arrive. Another observation was that whenever every speaker wanted to start his/her presentation, it would take a few minutes to setup their laptops as they would be connected to the vga cable on stage. Instead of all this wiring, is it possible to use the wireless LAN to broadcast the video-out directly to the projector through a receiver interface? What would be needed is a small application ( which can become a default in future distros ) in the laptop that compresses the video-out and sends it out through the wLAN to the hall's internal computer which then sends it to the projector. So every speaker simply clicks the application button in the laptop to start broadcasting. This will also give total wireless freedom for the speakers to move with their laptops. A wLAN runs at 50 Mbps which means 6.25 MBytes per second which should be more than sufficient for compressed video streams and internet access together. About 2 years ago I had also put forward a concept on this list, where a single projector is used to broadcast multiple images that can be selectively observed by different members of the audience. The projector would project image frames at high speeds. These images would be a combination of different video outputs from different sources. The members of the audience wear special LCD specs that work as a transparent window with a black LCD shutter. There are 2 or mode films being projected in multi frame sequences and the shutter in the glass opens only when its corresponding frame appears. So different people are simultaneously watching different movies in the same hall, using the same projector. Sound is wireless broadcast to individual headphones. Though this is far fetched for now, a small experiment can be carried out to watch at least 2 movies together. There are 2 video outputs available at a frame rate of 25 frames per second and each frame consisting of 2 fields interlaced together. So the video field frequency is 50 Hz. for each movie. The projector is running at 100 Hz. and it interlaces the 2 separate movie fields one after the other in a sequence. The glass shutter is yet to be developed, so a mechanical shutter can be used for experiments. It will be a fan blade type shutter, similar to the ones used in film projectors. 2 persons will individually view the screen through these shutters, but they will be phased to open only at their respective field projection and close during the other. So while person A is watching movie A, person B is watching movie B. Now if the 2 + 2 fields are polarized too, then during each frame session, 2 polarized fields are available. So now 4 people can watch 4 different movies using a combination of a shutter as well as polarized glasses, although with jitter. They have every reason to be deeply concerned that this is the beginning of a significant patent aggression by Microsoft," Eben Moglen, the Foundation's general counsel, said on Friday. The foundation controls intellectual property rights to key parts of the open-source Linux operating system. Novell angered members of the open-source community that develops Linux and other free software programs in November when it entered a wide-ranging business deal with Microsoft. Critics called on the board to punish Novell by banning it from distributing new versions of Linux software, said Moglen. Linux is the most popular variant of open-source software. Unlike proprietary software such as Microsoft Windows, open-source software lets developers share code and add functions and is generally available at no cost. Moglen said the board has not made a decision on the matter but that he expects it to announce a ruling within two weeks. If the foundation decides to take action, the ban would apply to new versions of Linux covered under a licensing agreement due to take effect in March. John Dragoon, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Novell, declined to comment saying it would be premature to speculate on how the issue would be resolved. "We'll take a look at the final determination and we'll react accordingly," he said. Software companies such as Novell sell standardized versions of open-source programs with custom features, maintenance plans and technical support. Linux sales accounted for 5 percent of the $967 million in revenue that Novell reported last year. The deal with Microsoft has turned into a far bigger cash generator as it calls for Microsoft to make two upfront payments totaling $348 million. The two companies agreed to jointly sell their products and also develop technologies to make it easier for businesses to use Linux alongside Windows software. They will also license each other's intellectual property. Members of the open-source community have called on Novell to pull out of the pact, saying it would undermine the patent position of Linux software and also give Microsoft an edge in persuading businesses to use Microsoft products over Linux and other types of open-source software. Jefferies & Co. analyst Katherine Egbert said Novell's business was likely to suffer if it was banned from using the new versions of Linux. It would have to boost spending on research and development to upgrade its software without access to the latest versions of the open-source code provided by the Foundation. Novell shares ended down 2 cents at $7.16 on the Nasdaq. The stock is likely to trade down before the Foundation discloses its ruling as investors stay on the sidelines to avoid the worst-case scenario, analysts said. [OT] Hardware Problems - Maybe CPU/Mobo

Hi, My monitor suddenly turned itself off while I was using the computer in the afternoon. The keyboard stopped working too. Since then, I've tried: Connecting the monitor to the onboard graphics instead of the AGP card. Replacing the power supply. Both the power supplies with all the load like hard disks and DVD drives disconnected. Two different monitors. No go. Then I had an idea and tried removing the RAM. There were no beeps, so probably, even POST isn't reached. I then disassembled, cleaned and reassembled everything. Nothing worked. When I switch on the computer, the monitor doesn't get any signal. The power supply and CPU fans are on. Any suggestions or ideas? I can't find a compatible processor or motherboard anywhere to test out mine.
