Hello all developers out there, I have released version 0.2 of ColourCode. ColourCode is a small ruby application to generate syntax highlighted HTML files from a source file. It is released under the GNU GPLv2 Currently it supports Javascript, Java, C++, C#, Python, Ruby and Shellscript(bash). I would appreciate it if some of you could take a look at it. My hearty congratulations to all of you, who made the gnowledge.org portal launch a great event. let us all continue to make this one of the largest collaborative portals in the world. Though the event marks the end of a project, for those who are in it, it is a beginning. The gnowledge portal team is now ready to take calls to conduct workshops to introduce the new way of organizing a very large amount of free knowledge that already exists on the Internet. Errors while Installing the Glibc-2.4.6

I'm building and installing the Glibc-2.4.6 library and getting the following errors when I install: Entering state 2 Reading a token: Now at end of input. Reducing stack by rule 2 (line 345), extdefs -> program Stack now 0 Entering state 1 Now at end of input. /tools/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.3/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: : No such file: No such file or directory collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Execution of gcc failed! The script has found some problems with your installation! Please read the FAQ and the README file and check the following: - Did you change the gcc specs file (necessary after upgrading from Linux libc5)? - Are there any symbolic links of the form libXXX.so to old libraries? Links like libm.so -> libm.so.5 (where libm.so.5 is an old library) are wrong, libm.so should point to the newly installed glibc file - and there should be only one such link (check e.g. /lib and /usr/lib) You should restart this script from your build directory after you've fixed all problems! Btw. the script doesn't work if you're installing GNU libc not as your primary library! make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/tools/glibc-2.3.6' make: *** [install] Error 2 root:/tools/glibc-2.3.6-build# I check everything listed above maybe I missed something. Edubuntu 6.06 LTS on Acer 2428 Report.

Hello All, The knowledge.org DVD that was released today has an Edubuntu 6.06 LTS iso in it. Just to try it out I burned it into a CD. It loaded smoothly in the pc for a live session. Then it was tried on the Acer 2428 laptop too and not only was the live session good but it installed smoothly into the HDD too. What I remember is that during a demo camp for linux, Ubuntu 6.06 as well as 6.10 threw up problems with Acer 2428 laptops. On mine too Ubuntu 6.10 would hang. Those lappys had to be loaded with Kubuntu 6.06. However Edubuntu 6.06 does not seem to have any issues with Acer 2428 and it uses the gnome desktop just like Ubuntu (which does not work on it). Another advantage of edubuntu over ubuntu is that its gnome comes loaded with graphics softwares like Scribus, Paint, Video Editor, Draw etc. So its more than just a distro for kids. Its for the aunties and uncles. However I could not play VCDs. Anyway I am used to it now. Wireless support for gnome is in-built so unlike kde, there is no separate wireless manager. Its handled by the 'Networking' utility in the 'Administration' menu under 'System'. Once your WAP is up, simply use the networking utility and under the blank list of available networks, a click on the drop down list will reveal your WAP's name below. That's what I heard in the background when my sister called me this evening. I got her to pick up the pamplet and found that a company named Vinsoft Technologies was doing this. It's providing packages of computers+AMC+training. Also, apparently there's some big poster on Churchgate station on Linux as well. I didn't get a chance to see that though. hello everyone, first of all my apologies to all,for asking a question that may be very silly,but i am not ashamed to tell that i duuno the concept about this... :-(,so i am ready to show my ignorance and not become ignorant my whole life...anyway following is the question,and please can some one define it or give some good link about it.It will be really helpful for me. 1) Where in memory exactly auto,static and extern(global) variables are stored..? 2) Detail explanation of the memory model of a C program. I am confused where in memory these variables are stored and also what are the stages in memory during compilation.. It will be very helpful for me,if someone guide me. Debian trends and future distros.

Hello Everyone, Here are some news tips and updates for Debian and its alied distros. During April 07, Ubuntu will come out with a multi-media centric distro called UbuntuStudio http://ubuntustudio.org/ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio There is also another media centric Ubuntu called Ubuntu Multimedia Center http://ubuntummc.com/ During that time the new Ubuntu versions 7.04 will be released too. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue28 Debian 4 which is still under 'Testing' and will be finally called Etch http://www.us.debian.org/releases/testing/ can be downloaded for trial using a small netinstall iso http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ from http://www.us.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ The netinstall iso is the base system only. But saves download of heavy dvds for testing. There are CD isos too but I don't know which iso contains what packages. I downloaded the netinstall iso which was 130 MB and used 'installgui' at boot prompt to use and study its GUI installer. Its really great and very good for non-experts to try out Debian. It works smoothly just like Fedora's Anaconda. Its kernel is 2.6.17. During installation, the Desktop option was selected during package selection and it download 540 MB of Gnome desktop. My 400 MB triband account is screaming and hysterical at the heavy downloads this month. :P Gnome in Etch RC1 is 2.15. In Ubuntu 6.10 it is 2.16. After install, the updates prompter in Etch states that kernel 2.6.18 image is available. So thats a plus point for Debian Etch. Gnome in Etch is a bit buggy. Its printer tool allows you to select and choose printers but at the final 'Apply' button, the entire process vanishes into thin air. You are back to square 1. The best way to setup printers in _any_ linux distro is to ensure that CUPS is running and use a web browser and type localhost:631 in the address bar. 631 is the CUPS port for printing. If you have enabled network administration ( see docs on the CUPS website) you can access your printer from across different machines by typing Your_Printer_PC_IP_Address:631 If you are a command line fan or X is not loaded then use the lynx text browser to do the same in command line. 'lynx localhost:631' You can change printer settings too, like page size, resolution etc. Another bug with gnome is that its automatic NetworkManager applet initially detects the connection established but after a reboot or two, it does not even detect the network device. All this while network is actually working and giving internet access. But Gnome in etch packs in some more packages and utilities compared to Ubuntu 6.10. It has a separate CD burning utility ( cannot recall its name) just like K3B in KDE. The default in-built burning utility still exists. The best option then would be to use both Gnome and KDE in Debian Etch and for that request someone who has its DVD to make a copy for you. ;) Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ The all-new Yahoo! Gnome under KDM possible?

If you install kde over gnome does it overwrite gdm? i mean does gnome work under kdm? I went through a few links under google but none could give me an answer! Or do the display managers work exclusively as in Gnome by default uses gdm whenever you log into gnome and kde uses kdm whenever i log into KDE? Sachin G. Nambiar

problems with installing ubuntu on an intel ggc based machine Please help.

hello. I had the shock of my life today. I had previously mentioned about a server installation I have to do. I don't find it will be any problem after the feedback I got about fedora. however there is another case which is really very interesting. I am trying to install gnu/linux on a machine with a seluron 2.8 processor and an intel ggc 2 motherboard with ati radeon display (the board is the latest intel mobo) if the case was a very streight forward case I would never have a problem in changing the distro. but I got the following interesting results. 1. ubuntu 6.06.1 (dapper) booted nicely with every device driver but display resolution was very bad probably 640 by 480. 2. ubuntu 6.10 was even more interesting. it did not boot at all on a machine with the same ggc 2 mother board with a seluron processor but booted very well on the same mobo with intel p4 3ghz processor. 3. fedora core 5 did not show up the graphical installer but I managed to install it without any desktop like gnome or kde. so the best part was on all computers ubuntu 6.06 aka 6.06.1 booted without proper display. and ubuntu 6.10 did not boot on the same ggc motherboard with seluron 2.8 processor and booted perfectly well with the same mobo with a p4 3 ghz processor. another small thing although it might not mean any thing. on the seluron and ggc mobo combination 256 mb ddr2 ram is available and on the p4 with ggc mobo 512 ddr2 ram. what shockes me time and again is that how 6.06 boots on every machine being older and 6.10 is so inconsistent. secondly 6.10 not just booted but gave perfect display (umm well at least 800 by 600) on a ggc with p4 and did not boot at all on other seluron machine with same mobo? Please sort out this problem and suggest the perfect distro. Krishnakant.

gnu/linux compatible interactive applications for children

Hi, I am running ubuntu dapper drake and works well for my needs. However now the time has come to introduce some interactive applications for toddlers. Its a long shot but are there any such media companies or specific applications that will run on my system? Examples of such CD/DVDs can be: 1) Learning alphabets and numbers 2) Nursery Rhymes 3) Click n paint and so on. I do have wine installed where i run IE6 and other exe applications. In parallel i will try and install some of those apps and see if it works, but in the meantime if anyone can supply me with some known-to-work names or feedback, I'll appreciate it. "Since we have a new core in this review, I decided it was prudent to pull out both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Linux. We wanted to find out where Core 2 shows the most performance and how it did versus AMD in each mode. The table below shows the compile options for each OS and processor type. I didn't go all out and be over-aggressive here. It was important to compile the applications for each specific processor type but not be too aggressive and cause instability." What compilation has he done? Is he actually compiling the kernel or packages or does he give the specific commands at boot prompt? Could someone briefly explain the process? File Deletion

hi, I want to delete files older than a particular date or older than a particular no of days. the command i used for this is on a usual linux machine was- find /dir -type f -mtime +7 | xargs rm -f ( also i used a combination of "touch" and "find" which too worked fine) now my problem is i have to perform the same task only in C (without using shell script ) as the device for which i m writing this module has its own small linux kernel and hence doesnt support many commnads like "find" , "more" ,"mv" etc .......... i am aware of the remove() function in C but how do i get the date a file was last modified and then delete it ???
