Seek advice to quit Windows

Hi, Let me first introduce myself. I have been a silent observer of this list for the past 1-2 years. Though I havent contributed anything to this list, I very much like the concept of Linux and Free Software. Unfortunately, for me I learnt about this long after I went for the microsoft certification which helped me to get a job. I work as a windows system admin (3 years) for living. After observing and readin a lot in this community and a little bit of personal experience with linux I wish to move into linux administration and personally I hate microsoft's way of working. To work in windows I need to keep myself trained in windows and for that i have to use windows. That goes into a vicious circle. I find myself locked I am sure I would be considered as a newbie (I am one) in the linux world and I see jobs are mostly for the experienced in the linux administration. What should I do to make the switch? I need your suggestions. I wish to quit windows..now -- True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. Opensource for a Small Manufacturing unit

Hi, Am going to work in a small manufacturing unit with a T.O. of around 9cr. Currently they do have a few desktops(un-networked) with pirated copies(based on discussions i doubt they know the difference and i want to change that) of Windows XP installed. By their roadmap and current projects in hand they see a very easy jump into a sub 20cr and perhaps more, category. I propose to install opensource software in this company, mostly to avoid licensing issues as soon as they are spotted on MS's radar as they grow larger. It's business not ideology. Requirements: Tally software Autocad/Studioworks or any other as good opensource/linux variant. Spreadsheet Email etc These are the basic requirements and currently they dont even have a website mostly because their business is not web centric or even remotely close to it. I know there are other engineering based software variants to autocad out there, but are they as good? and what about Tally. As far as i know they can definitely afford a licensed version of engineering/accounting software. But they really need to avoid software costs in the future. People i assume are not very software oriented apart from basic usage. Please note that software has to be scalable as the business is going to grow! So i would also need some miniature BI tool(even if it's just a spread sheet in it's simplest form) if possible in the future. Recommend a Linux distro

Hi list, A friend of mine is a network admin. Recently, I had a talk with him and convinced him to use GNU/Linux to control the internet access to all the client PCs in his organization. His requirements are pretty simple and can be satisfied by using Squid. But the problem is that his knowledge of GNU/Linux is nill, zero! Now I would really like to know if there is some distro that can meet his requirements ( Proxy, NAT, DNS Cache, Firewall easy to setup and web based administration of the server ). You know something that would need him to only pop in the CD on a fresh machine - install automatically without creating too much fuss about partitioning scheme, the packages that he wants etc.. etc.. and would give him a simple web based interface ( something like we have on cheap routers or similar to webmin ). Sqlite3 linking problem

Hi all, I have used sqlite3 database engine for my C appln . my C program (first.c )simply opens database , creates tables and closes database. I have confirmed the presence of sqlite3 librarries on my system at /usr/lib/ my compliation option is : gcc first.c -lsqlite3 and then i get a compln error as path to sqlite3 lib - could not read symbols :Invalid operation ld returned with exit status 1 Can any one help me to sort out this ? it will b of great help to me ......... MTNL Triband - SSH

Hi ! I have a Linux box connected to MTNL triband by D-Link Dsl 502 router. The triband connection also has a Live ip. my query is: 1.) I have opened the iptables for ssh port 22, on the linux box but still cannot get to thru from outside. I have connected the router in bridge mode. This is were you are terribly mistaken the whole idea, even a practically proven fact! When you give your software to some one, 1. he uses it 2. If he feels it good in doing his job, a. he suggests the same to his friends. But, his friends also wish to test is themselves so he needs to *distribute*. b. he thinks he can help you in improving the software still better, so he contributes 3. He find some bugs in the software and if he is skilled, gets you some patches so your software becomes less buggy. Hence, when he shares/distributes the software with his friends, more eyes are looking into the software and hence more bugs get *solved* and your software improves. 4. So, its not the only user you gave your software to, but its 10 and 100s of others who voluntarily involve themselves in improving *your* software, just because they like it and think it is useful than others. You need not spend *millions* in this manner to make your software reach high quality, feature richness or get a huge user base. And, a developer who has the skill to create software, and if he is indeed really interested in helping the community with good quality software, will indeed follow the FOSS philosophy we all stand for and not the one which you have misunderstood. [OT?] Is there a TCS LUG?

Hi, Is there anyone from TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) on this list and do you guys know of a TCS LUG? When I was recruited into TCS I was told that there's a Linux User Group in TCS as well. But I couldn't find anything through the TCS employee portal. My search has been even more difficult since I work in client office.
