Problem with using GPS is (a) lack of detailed maps for India (b) cost An 8051 with RF chip should do the basic processing. Else put in a DSP for more computation and use the 8051 as the front end for communication. You are not looking at a fancy OS on it, right. these RF can be configured for directional transmission by placing a directional antenna at the transmitter end. Akshay

Hello All, While we are on to discussing new ideas, this is a concept that I thought of during my daily traveling. I am mostly on field and travel a lot in public transport. I have observed that visually impaired persons usually have a problem with directions and it is more complex when it comes to making choices in different directions. Now that we have the honor of having an extremely talented person like Mr. Mane on our list, he too can give feedback on this. The normal method is to use beeping sounds near signals and crossings. However, our road networks are complex and require more complex sign aids. The problem is compounded when making a choice at a junction of many roads, not knowing which road leads to what place. This can be resolved by having radio beepers at all road points and each beeper having its own data repeatedly broadcast. To differentiate between each post and its data, the user has a handheld unidirectional radio receiver that has a mini parabolic dish antenna. The user first turns the receiver around and gets beeps for every radio post detected. As the device is pointed, its sound is the loudest when pointing straight to it. Then with the flick of a switch, he hears the data through a earphone. It tells him where he is located and where the direction he points to, is leading to with actual road names too. Linux file recovery.

Hello All, I want to know some good utility for recovering a deleted ext3 partition's files and folders. The partition is not yet overwritten. I googled and tried `r-linux' in windows as well as `recover' in linux but both these softwares simply dump a long list of blank files that represent inodes. The tldp site too does not provide info about converting inodes into original files. How does one actually convert deleted files/folders into their original form? GDB Help

Hi, I 'm working on Debuggers, basically GDB ... need to change it for a native chipset. I need to know 1. the "chain of functions" GDB goes through when given the command on the Command-Line. 2. Also the "chain of commands" GDB goes through when given commands like break, step etc. I 'm reading GDB Internals ... but its not helping me much in this regard. Pleas Help. -- wrr

Ideally this should come with the cell phone. But what with Bluetooth being subjective to virus attacks, an addon can be designed which does this task. Also, with RF enabled microcontrollers available cheaply, one can do these developments as standalone devices. Another application is giving them out at places like Prince of Wales Musuem instead of the casette players. Each location identified with numbers can emit a low power rf. The player with the tourist shall know which id is this and hence what information to play out. The RF/processing cost is not major hurdle if the amout of processing required is small and the distances are within a few hundred metres, the data rates not exceeding a few kbps. (64kbps is supported by a few chips over short distances) regards, Akshay

Contacting moderators

I was trying to contact the moderator (I mailed Anurag) about a problem I face reading the listmail with my webmail client (I can't access it right now, but I think it is called something Boxes - it has an icon of an Escher like box assembly), but the mail bounced saying no such mailbox, which is vizarre because he most definitely is still using his gnuer address. Anyway, the problem is that the first mail in the digest is clearly visible, while the rest are dimmed and darned difficult to read. Does anyone know why this happens? Secondly, the listmail appears without a date - so that it is all piled up at the very end of my Inbox. This also happens with some spam (heh heh - no drawing hasty conclusions), but not all. As you can see, I also access the list from my yahoo listmail address, and here I don't get either problem. ubuntu and wine: some updates

Installed ubuntu dapper drake desktop for the first time. Before this, I had only worked with RH based distros. Installed Apache, MySQL and PHP also. It was a Breeze. Overall, only 1 word can describe the entire distro and setup. Sexy. Had to run putty for an application (ssh and xterm messed up the function keys) so installed it over wine. Again, a breeze though with some errors. Which is ok. One tip: The font looks weird. So you will need to change it to anything else and it will look fine. I had to install desktop version even though I am using it as a server because we dont have the luxury of a dedicated server only machine. My mandatory question is: Would it have been better to have installed the server version with ready LAMP stack and then enabled X? thanks abhi __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Perl Hashes.

Hi. I have a perl hash that has 200 key-value pairs. Something like this: 001 one 002 two ........... 200 two_hundred My script can read the pairs which are at the top without issues, but from pair 170 onwards, the script fails to read them. Is there any limit on the memory/number of elements in a hash? If I move pair number 171 right at the top, it works. Strangely, the script works very well on Linux, but the problem occurs on AIX and HP-UX. Regards, NMK.

Copying the entire file System from one partition to another

If you are keen just to upgrade your kernel the easiest thing is to get a RPM kernel for your distro, but if you really want to compile from source read on... :-) > Along with this i will be very thankfull if u can kindly explain me the kernal compilation > process(i want to compile a new kernal) http://www.freeos.com/articles/4794/ Download a vannilla kernel from http://www.kernel.org/ (click on the F) or ftp://glug-nith.org/tarballs/linux-2.6.17.11.tar.bz2 or ftp://glug-nith.org/tarballs/linux-2.4.32.tar.bz2 depending on whether you want the 2.4 or 2.6 branch. If you are using a distro as old as RH9 then you should try the 2.4 kernel. Unzip the tarball and after cding into the directory type: # make help That would show you all your available options. 3-day workshop on open source software

Dear all, There's a three-day workshop on open source software being organised by a non-profit organisation, together with assistance from local bodies and companies, in Bombay. It will be a purely technical workshop, with the aim of introducing some of the popular ideas, concepts, and application layers to the participants. All interested individuals are invited. There are no delegate fees. The details can be found in a generic invitation letter which was sent to many institutes and colleges: http://www.starcomsoftware.com/tmp/aoss-invite.pdf and the programme schedule can be found at: http://www.starcomsoftware.com/tmp/aoss-programme.xls The body responsible for organising this workshop is an int'l non-profit organisation, with their office in Singapore, called the CICC (check http://www.cicc.org.sg) These people facilitate various computing activities in Asia, and OSS is one of the areas they have decided to promote. They have been organising a series of AOSS Workshops (AOSS = Asian OSS) all over Asia and have been getting very good responses. They have now arrived at a new model for organising these workshops with practically zero central funding or corporate sponsorships, so that it remains a grassroots movement. Their first attempt at doing one in India was in May, in Chennai. This one, in Navi Mumbai, will be their second. They intend to do one in some corner or other of India every two or three months, in parallel with similar events in other parts of Asia. Wherever they organise these events, they try to rope in local volunteer bodies or SIGs, and the Chennai workshop was heavily supported by CDAC Chennai, CSI Chennai Chapter, and NIC Chennai. Most of the delegates were teachers from colleges from the four southern states, and researchers from academic institutions. CICC are in the process of exploring their network of contacts to reach out to the ILUG groups in various cities, so it is very likely that they will come to each LUG in India for organisational assistance for future events. Currently, this Bombay event which was organised in a bit of a hurry has CDAC Bombay acting as the host and providing the venue, and a group of three or four organisations providing speakers and organisational support totally on a non-commercial basis. All course material prepared by speakers for these workshops are contributed into the central pool, and are re-used for subsequent events. At the Bombay workshop, we have a mix of speakers who are young and technically competent hands-on techies, and senior managers who have headed major OSS-based projects in their organisations. The speaker from Mazgaon Docks Limited is the Head of IT at MDL, and has headed major enterprise-level application development projects on OSS platforms for MDL. It is likely that the members of this LUG mailing list are quite knowledgeable and may not find anything much to learn from the workshop. But if you know someone who is a beginner with Linux and OSS, or a boss who wants to learn about this "new Linux thing", please pass on this workshop pointer to them and let them apply as per the details given in the invitation letter.
