Ubuntu 5.10 Live Report

Hello All, This month's LFY magazine has a Ubuntu 5.10 live CD that can be used as a live sample of the Ubuntu 5.10 OS. It installed and setup smoothly. The system was P4 2.4 GHz, Intel 845 GEBV2 MB, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB IDE HDD. The display drivers were much better than 5.04 and gave good screen resolution unlike 5.04's basic 640x480 resolution. Sound could not be tested as multimedia was not complete due to legal issues :-P . Due to the dhcp now working in linux too, the triband ADSL modem got the system on the net as soon as it was up. The firewall inside the modem took care of open ports in the live system. The wvdial.conf file from my other distros was simply copied and run. It ran smoothly for both, the dialup modem as well as the Reliance LSP350R. Only thing to remember is that all root based commands must be preceeded by the word 'sudo'. And after the first run of the triband internet, switch off the adsl modem and after any of the wvdial connections are up, run the 'sudo route add default ppp0' command for net access. The transcend 512 mb pen drive was detected flawlessly and a cute little icon was automatically created on the desktop. On the whole it was a very good experience and this distro came out in flying colours. It is definately worth a try. :) My only query is that if root access is not allowed for security, still anyone can simply sudo and gain access. How is the system protected from outside. If anyone can hack into the user account, can he then sudo and play ball? How secure is this sudo? If however, I change the IP address of eth0.5 to 10.1.3.244, I can ping 10.1.3.128 (because now both are on the same subnet, and same vlan) I thought that even though the source (10.1.1.10) and destination IP (10.1.3.128) address are on different subnets, as both are on the same vlan, the gateway should be able to forward the packets. Can anyone please clarify ? Thanks Shahed.

Ubuntu - Bug Buddy

I tried to send a bug report using the Bug Buddy on Ubuntu. But it asks me for a sendmail path to send the mail to the developers. What should this path be? Also, when I saved this report as a file so that it could be sent later manually via mail, I realized that the size of that file is 4 MB!!! -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

Playing sound files/songs

hello all i have a weird problem. whenever i play sound files/songs on my debian sarge machine (any media player) it plays no doubt. but the sound is audible only when i put speaker on full volume. i fail to understand the problem. tried all sorts of players from freshmeat without success.. can anyone tell me wht could be the problem? cheers -- Apoorva Kulkarni

Auto-complete gives me more

When ever i use [Tab] for auto-complete in bash, if the output is more than the screen buffer, it automatically starts it under more e.g. $cd [tab][tab] x/ y.log z/ a.out b/ c/ --More-- Can anyone tell me, How can I change this more to less so that it can be <[tab][tab]> | less instead of <[tab][tab]> | more $cd [tab][tab] x/ y.log z/ a.out b/ c/ :_

Backup opera wand passwords in linux

Hello friends, I use opera as my default browsers and prefer to store all my passwords in the wand. I am presently using slackware and SUSE but now I plan to format my computer and install Debian. I don't have any important data. I only need my opera bookmarks, which I have backed up and my password wand. Can anyone help me there? Thank you.

Survey on Linux Desktop users by Data Quest

Hi Everyone, Data Quest is apparently doing a survey on Linux Desktop usage. I know because they called me to ask me some questions on their questionaire. The sad thing is that the guys doing the survey have absolutely no idea of what they are doing and apparantly not even connected with InfoTech. First they had a very unclear way of introducing the matter, asif worried that they will be asked something they cant answer. I told them that yes, I use Linux Desktop software. He asked me again whether I use Linux on Desktop. I clarified to him that we have stopped using desktop computers and everyone in our firm now uses Laptop computers but we use Linux in the laptops. The big joke is that he said "Oh, so you do not use Linux in Desktops.....Ok, thank you" and put down the line. They guy obviously does not know the difference between desktop computers and desktop software and that Linux Desktop software can also be loaded on laptops too. If anyone knows some of the senior managers in Data Quest, please convey this to them. I am quiet sure that at this rate, they will show a very low user numbers. Regards Saswata

Oracle apps on Linux Fedora Core4 not able to get universal installer

Hi I am trying to install Oracle Applications on Fedora Core 4. I am not able to get the Oracle universal installer. It gives the java null exception error, Java is loaded on the computer. when we gave java-version, it gave the java version. When I give xclock, it shows me the clock. SMTP for Internet

I'm currently using Cable net. The cable ISP has set up LAN and giving me access over PPPOE and I can also access his ftp,ssh,smtp on his router, I can mail to my email on gmail.com from his smtp on the router. Can I set set smtp on my computer and mail the world using it?

Gtk 1.2 themes

How can I change the gtk 1.2 themes? I got gtk-engines-industrial with apt, but cant change the theme of my gtk 1.2 apps (xmms, Audacity, Vlc Player, etc.) I tried to change the theme with gtk-theme-switch package and also by manually editing ~/.gtkrc file. I cant see any change in the above mentioned apps. revant
