ncftp configuration

Hello everybody, Sorry to bother you with this trivial problem, but as it goes, I am experiencing problem using ncftp on my RedHat Fedora core 1 system. When I checked, it had ncftp preinstalled. And when i type "ncftp 192.168.10.1" at the command prompt(where 192.168.10.1 is the IP of the host where i wanted to log in), it connects successfully and displays the ftp prompt. Now the problem is : 1) When i type ls it shows /pub and then i cannot create a directory there or cannot upload, download files. A permission denied error is shown. 2)When i try logging into ftp from the shell prompt by typing "ncftp 192.168.10.1 -u root -p XXXX", where root and XXXX are the username and 3) Actually, I need am very new to the concept of ncftp, can u suggest any resources other than ncftp documentation, where i can learn how to configure the ftp service. My project is on email archival, and the all the work in the project is complete except the ncftp portion. what i need is to build a number of user accounts, with certain usernames and passwords and then i need to write shell scripts to automate the uploading and downloading of files. If the hardware vendor does _not_ provide drivers or specs to write the drivers then no matter what Linux distro you use, you will not be able to connect to the 502t on the USB port. Ask the vendor for drivers; suggest you write about your dilemma to: K. R. Naik MD/CEO, DLink India Ltd. DLink House, Plot No. 5 Kurla-Bandra Complex Road Off CST Road, Santa Cruz (East) Mumbai, MH 400 098 Request Mr. Naik to provide you a NIC if he does not want to provide Linux drivers for the USB port :) If enough people start asking the vendors for Linux drivers perhaps they will listen. -------------- I'll try this option. Sir, I do not have a LAN Card installed in my computer. I use Redhat Linux 9.0 and kudzu is able to detect this hardware but there are no appropriate dirvers. I am planning to Upgrade to Fedora Core 4 soon and I dont know whether even, that would support. Automated Encryption

hello everybody, I am experiencing a proble related to encryption. can u suggest some encryption method which if used with shell scripts, needs no user input and can be fully automated, eg. methods where user doesnt hav to type in the encrption keys. the key can be kept in a file and can be picked up from there. Currently, I use bcrypt, which prompts user to enter the encryption key and thus goes out of shell scripts control. Why logging as root in the GUI is avoidable

The number of bad things that can happen, dramatically increases when logged in as root. Learn to run as much as possible as a regular user, and su to root only when needed. This may sound like a lot of extra work (and probably is at first), but once the "right"way of doing things is learned, it soon becomes second nature. A brief anecdote from a friend: he had a client who's new system stopped "working". Curiously, he found the entire /dev directory was missing, which he re-installed and all was well again. He was back a few days later and found the system logged in as root to X, and someone had clicked on /dev in the file manager, and dragged it onto the desktop. Smooth move! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is pretty good advice for a newbie. Driver for D-Link DSL 502T ADSL modem

Hi all, My semester exams have just ended today (Wednesday 16th Nov 2005). I have been accessing the internet for my stuff through windows for the past week and I require the driver for D-Link DSL 502T ADSL modem (yes, I have MTNL Triband) and the box of the modem came with a CD (but driver has been supplied only for Windows :-( ).... If anyone has managed to find a link or downloaded a driver from somewhere,please email it to me or direct me to that site. Hi ppl, Was cool meeting some of you guys on Sunday n my earlier meeting with Monsieur Jon Masters (when he was down here),Erle and Derwyn...consequently me is on the LUG :) With regards the project I mentioned in my meet @ Barista,Bandra which aims at easing some of the pains associated with device drivers, I finally remembered where I heard of it. Jon Masters mentioned it when Erle,Derwyn and I met up with him, I wrote to him and got a reply telling me it's called DKMS and it's a Dell project....http://linux.dell.com/projects.shtml The article on Linux Journal on the above project (link thru from the Dell site above) is also very informative. Terminal service sound problem

Hi, I use krdc from FC4 to connect to Windows machines. One problem I find is that sound doesnt work even if I select play at remote computer or play at local computer. I checked if sound in terminal service works if I connect from XP. It works fine. Once it worked but sound quality was very poor. Now I do not remember what I did to make it work. Is there anything to be configured in the sound server? Any pointers or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Regards, Raj

It's there so why not use it ? But that's beside the point (Please ANYone, do not take offense, pretty please) To put it shortly, by personal experience, except Suse I haven't heard music from a Linux box ever. Something or the other always screws up. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible. It just means I'm lazy For further assistance, please post your linux distro and soundcard model or any identification marks if present. Small problem in SUSE 10

This is my first submission to this list. Please forgive for any mistakes. I have been using linux for the past 2 years.(First installed distro FC2) I have recently installed SUSE 10 along with Fedora 4(which was previously present).I chose not to install GRUB during SUSE install and am using the GRUB of Fedora to boot Win xp ,fedora as well as SUSE.All works fine in SUSE except that the display quality is very bad. I get a resolution of 1024x768 after adding "vga=0x317" as kernel parameter while booting SUSE .But when i scroll up or down in webpages or konqueror filebrowser th scrolling is not smooth. Can anyone help me to find out what is wrong.There in no such problem in Fedora 4 which i am using since 4 months....My graphics card is S3ProSavage DDR onboard. Everything else works fine in SUSE .Also 1 more thing....I cant start SAX2 from anywhere ,neither command prompt in runlevel 3 or from yast in runlevel 5.plzz help LINUX GURUS!!!! Apart from this, I think SUSE 10 is the ideal distro to get any newbie hooked onto linux as it has a gui for almost all tasks using YAST(I myself was hooked on to linux since i first used the SUSE 9.1 Live CD.)
