root login in vncserver

Hi, I have a vncserver running in my FC4 pc. I connect to this pc from another pc where i use Slax Kill-Bill live cd. I use vncviewer for that. But is there any way to restrict root login because when I login to the vncserver it doesnt ask for a username. It just asks for password that I had set through vncpasswd. I could not find any config files in /etc. To my knowledge config files exist only in $home. I could not find anything in google. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Raj

Download speed less than upload speed

I took numerous speed tests on the internet and they show that my upload speed is almost double that of my download speed(35.5kbps). Is their anyway to tweak these settings so the come near equal. I use Arch Linux, unpatched kernel, i686 and cable net which advertises a speed of 64 kbps. -Nikhil

Hi, I need a *second* CPU for under 7-8K and I needed on some input on the current known 5 starred tried and tested - no hassle - setups. My personal preference is for an AMD + MSI combo. But I do not know of the specific models. This machine does not need to be the bling machine.. just normal DTP, spreadsheets, sandbox for web/networking apps, an occasional XP testbed machine etc. Debian should run and if possible detect everything in an hour with my molecular knowledge. All hardcore stuff goes on my machine "1". I do not want to buy something and then caned for buying "closed" hardware. So to put it simply I need a processor (anything decent enough) a motherboard (the two need to do well in tandem and not blow my roof off, no I want an AC h/w) 256 RAM (is what I'm thinking right now- manageable.) a cabinet should set me back by 1500 (exclusive of the 7-8K limit) I have an extra LAN card that I can use. Monitor and display switch operational. Input devices AOK. I have an extra CD drive. May go in for a DVD writer later (out of money) Response invited. Thread closes in 2 days. Game for flame too.. hi, i have two molecular dynamics codes, both of them take the same input, but the in different format. let me explain, for one code (named PinyMD) in the input file, we have, ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 1 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 2 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cr}\atom_ind{ 3 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.11}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cw}\atom_ind{ 4 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.13}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cw}\atom_ind{ 5 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.13}] and so on........ and for other code (named NMA) the input file, 1 1 2 1 3 2 4 1 5 1 6 2 7 1 8 1 and so on.... the relation between them is very straightforwd. what appears in PinyMD's input file as "na" might be an integer 1 or "cr" be integer 2 for NMA. i am trying to write a bash script, which will read in PinyMD input file and convert in the NMA file, after reading the line, ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 1 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cr}\atom_ind{ 2 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] so on..... it should echo, 1 1 2 3 so on.... how do i pick up elements 'na' (which i will replace with some integer) and atom_ind{ 1 } which i will replace with 1? -- Life is complex. Morning Fellas, Need some pointers from you folks. Am stuck with a simple issue. On the server i have a struct defined as: struct sendbuff { int count; char toprint[10000]; }; My objective is to pack this buffer across the n/w and recv it on the client. count is a simple counter which i am usign to keep track of the lost/unordered packets is any. USB freezes FC4 system

I have a Mercury Intel 810 motherboard. That it has a USB controller, I discovered only recently. However, whenever I plug in a USB pen drive when the system is booted up, the system completely freezes. Disconnecting the pen drive doesn't help, and I have to use the reset button. The device works fine if it's connected prior to boot up. However, if I then unmount it, and try to stick it in again, the system still freezes up. I tried recompiling the kernel, but since I dont know much, all I did was simply enable ALL the drivers in the USB section. The problem persists. Could anyone guide me to a solution? While messing around with assembly i printed the value of %esp when nothing is on the stack. It was 80. Does this mean that there are only 80 bytes on the stack. If yes then how does all the cmd line args and stuff fit in it. Squid problem

Hello, I am using squid v 2.5.STABLE8 (recompiled with x-forwarded-for patch) along with dansguardian v 2.8.0.3 on a FC2 box. Iptables dnat rules make sure that all port 80 and port 3128 requests are sent to port 8080. When I configure squid to enable access based on proxy_auth using /usr/lib/squid/pam_auth, I always get access denied... with the following line in the cache.log : 2005/08/25 11:51:06| aclAuthenticated: authentication not applicable on accelerated requests. Funny thing is -- if the client's browser settings are changed to use Proxy server on port 3128 instead of "automatically detect settings", then the browser pops up for username/password and accepts correct passwords to work just fine. But I was wanting to get this done when the browser hits on port 80 and not port 3128. Even when I try without Accel mode, I get access denied from squid, with the only difference being that instead of saying that the denied page was - lets say - "yahoo.com" -- it will say denied page was -- "/" I googled a bit and found that squid ver 3 (still under DEVEL) has an option to rebuild with "--enable-auth-on-accel" which will probably solve this problem. But i dont want to use v3 as it is still under DEVEL. I am now wondering what can be done about this ..... can someone help? Thanx in advance Vai

I guess if not then it just hangs or tries to connect indefinately. To buttress this fact further i would say that when i ssue an ifconfig the output shows Received by as a different value everytime (Increasing everytime) which i suppose indicates that the pc is indeed on the network. One question remains that even if i keep my default gateway address as blank then also my ifconfig shows two different address for eth0 which are 172.25.65.29 and Bcast as 172.25.65.31. i am not sure what this means!! any help would be appreciated. PPPoE expects cc compiler installed but it seems my machine does not have one. So i downloaded an RPM package for the same but that in turn asks for glibc-develp package. I downloaded that and tried installing but it in turn asked for kernel headers Since i dont have the installation cd for linux i have downloaded that also and will give a try but if that fails then i will get the CD and perform the installation. E667 : Fsync failed

Hi All, I am trying to install Oracle 9i Standard edition on RHEL 4. While setting the shmmax value ( as root ) in /proc/sys/kernel to that specified in the Oracle documentation, I am facing a problem. When I edit the value in shmmax using vi editor and try saving it, it gives a message "E667 : Fsync failed." I am unable to edit this file. Can anyone help me out with this ? Regards, Gopi

Hi there Following is the output of various commands i issued as requested... line after semicolon is the comment I had to do some editing since i saved the result in linux but when i opened the file in windows it had many unwanted carriage returns.
