Concept of Copy/Paste.

Hello All, What is the concept of copy paste in linux as compared to windows? In windows I can save highlighted text or links in the clipboard and close the source program or editor. In linux, if the source program/editor is closed, it does not highlight the 'paste' option in the destination program or editor. Case: As a safety measure links from emails are never clicked directly, instead they are copied and then pasted in the addres bar of the browser. In this process if the email client is closed, the 'paste' option is not highlighted. Same thing happens when saving parts of a web page text from a browser to a text editor. So in linux is the concept of copy based on the an active link only as compared to windows, where a seperate memory pad is used to store the text? opening attachments with pine

I've recently upgraded from FC2 to FC3 and am now having trouble opening attachments through pine. This is the flow of events after asking pine to display an attachment: 1. pine saves attachment to /tmp 2. pine spawns attachment viewer 3. pine deletes attachment from /tmp 4. attachment viewer finally shows up and cannot find the attachment Current version of pine - 4.63. A lot of articles on the net talking about opening attachments in pine, but none of them address this issue. Ideas on what I can try? My current solution is to have a shell script copy the file out of /tmp and then spawn the attachment viewer with the new filename. Philip

Connected Online Icons freeze.

Hi All I am working on Debian sarge 2.6.11,When I connent to internet, through my Reliance Landline Connection, all the desktop shortcuts stop responding whereas the task bar Icons respond mostly though sometimes they to turn obstinate. Initially i thought it could be because of the Firestarter as when i tried to log in through Terminal 1 or any other tty i get characters like this running that i cannot run any command. IN=PP0 OUT= MAC= SRC=220.226.9.18 DST=220.226.6.188 LEN=48 TOS=0X00 TTL=45 ID=41026 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=265 1 DPT=445 WINDOW=16384 As soon as i killl pppd after sometime the system may work. I neither see any heavy disk activity during all this. Tried google but could not locate the same error somebody facing too. A project idea

This is a quite simple and basic idea i had today. Some of you may have noticed that when oss developers are releasing it they have to put in a lot of time to design a proper website for it. So if we could have a bunch of php scripts together that would do the following things(more if you have suggestions): - Automatically generate common links like Screenshots, About, Features, Download, Help. - The developer just has to put download files in a directory called downloads or something and then the install script will parse the directory contents and generate links for download. Overtime it could be modified to recognise extensions such as deb & rpm & tar.gz and put 'source', or 'debian woody' - The install script will generate html files so that the developer can add more program specific html - It will be modular using include() - Other directories like faq or help or screenshots will also be passed Please tell me what you think about it. But the incident experienced here is applicable to windows XP specifically. (as far as I have experienced!) Secondly, I use, KDE 3.1-10 as my desktop environment under Redhat Linux 9.0 and I have a utility called Klipper This is a good utility which store the previous copied text and enables a number of entries (which can be customized). Also, hopefully, it even store after closing the source program/editor. Sir, Can I know which distro are u using? Doubt that. You can sling a pci bus onto almost anything. The 2GB limit is because of the bios. Once you boot with a floppy linux will work with any disk. Also memtest will fail if the bios settings are not suitable for the ram. Afaik linux will not interfere with the mem timings. Check the bios setup. Insert maximum wait states to slow down ram access. Replace the ram if you can find some of those ancient pieces. Or try a floppy distro. since these use very little ram it might just work. rgds jtd

Hi all, any idea what a message like this means, this is just when the kernel is loaded from floppy, uncompresses and the below message comes repeated in screenfull. Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000 the machine is a 486 with 40MB ram, 4.3GB HDD. (dos/windows too are unable to start up apart from the initial messages.) just curious typically which part of hardware could have gone wrong? Patch Kernel 2.6.11

Hi, I am using Slackware 10.1. The default kernel is 2.6.10. Slackware gives the unmodified kernel source along with the Source CDs. I installed kernel source 2.6.10. Then I downloaded the patch for kernel 2.6.11 from kernel.org and successfully applied it. After that I apply patch 2.6.11.1 which also got applied, but after that patch 2.6.11.2 gives me error. I tried it many times and checked that I am not making any mistakes, but every time 2.6.11.2 gives me error. When trying to apply patch-2.6.11.2, I get the following error. (I have tried with both the patch kernel script, as well as using the patch command directly, both with same result), root@localhost:~/linux-2.6.10# ./scripts/patch-kernel . . patch-2.6.11.2.bz2 Current kernel version is 2.6.11.1 (Woozy Numbat) Applying patch-2.6.11.2 (bzip2)... 1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file Makefile.rej Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Skipping patch. 3 out of 3 hunks ignored -- saving rejects to file drivers/input/serio/i8042-x86ia64io.h.rej Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Now as per the message if this file contains patch file "2.6.11.2" has contents which are already applied then the next file "patch 2.6.11.3 " should at least successfully apply. I tried to jump to 2.6.11.3, but of course that also gives me error. What I did next was delete the whole source directory. Re-copied the source directory, applied the 2.6.11 patch (which gets applied successfully, in any case). Then instead of applying any other 2.6.11.x patches, I directly tried to apply 2.6.12 patch and it got applied without any errors on the screen. Now I am not sure whether I have done the correct thing or not. Secondly, I still can't figure out why am I not able to apply any patch in the 2.6.11.x series subsequent to 2.6.11.1 ? What am I doing wrong ? The Documentation directory along with the source does not contain any instruction/suggestions to apply extraversion level patches.
