Hi All, First of all Disclaimer: The person writing this mail doesn't know how to write short mails. So, a request to please cooperate with him and forgive his ignorance. Then the problem: I am having a piece of hardware called the Wipro Ezynet Server. This is primarily a Linux based solution for cybercafes. It does not have port for connecting a VDU. I has two Ethernet interfaces, supposed to be remotely controlled using a web browser and does not have ports to connect the keyboard and mouse. The problem I am facing now is that the hard disk has crashed. I have misplaced the cd's and manual of the system. I have replaced the hard disks and now want to use it as an Internet gateway to connect our office LAN to the net. I don't know what to do and how to go about it. Once I tried loading RHL9 on to it. I took out the mbd and connected a pci vga card and succeeded in loading RHL. It has a small socket for connecting a kbd using a connector similar to the ones for mouse we used to have in P-I system. It has some kind of a card used to display the booting info on an LCD screen. The moment I reconnected the card, it just went bust. The card seems to know only the OS it came packaged with and seems to be the loader ( like lilo or grub) for the OS. Anyone have a better idea, how to get it up and running without connecting a VDU, KBD and MOUSE. Pls let me know. If required I will give the complete specs and picture of the system and what is inside. Without the LCD/card, we will not be able to know whether it has booted up or not and with it, it only looks for the OS it cam with. regards, rc

recover from kernel panic.....

i have mandrake linux installed but all of a sudden it is giving me a kernel panic msg as below ------------------------------------------------- during normal booting mode : Kernel panic:no init found. try passing init=option to kernel ------------------------------------------------- during failsafe mode i get other error as below: Kernel panic: :VFS:unable to mount rootfs on hda5. ------------------------------------------------- why it gives two different msg in different modes.how do i recover it.does this happen du to some data loss during power failure or some other reason. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! Dont know why that is?? Nokia having just emerged out of the dark cave, are testing the waters. The recent Nokia "patent gift" to the kernel is a case in point. As RMS said it seems to be one of the companies who try to give as little as possible in exchange for a cave full of FLOSS riches. The opening of it's patents itself was probably brought about by it's inability to distribute patent restricted code in the linux kernel, since this would place restrictions on a recipient and hence invalidate their licence to distribute the kernel. Hi guys, i guess you all must have heard about Nokia 770 its a Linux based Internet tablet that can use bluetooth Wi-FI to connect to the net n has a host of other feature. And its dedicated for Internet i.e. no phone. For developers interested in it, it uses a development platform called maemo(www.maemo.org<http://www.maemo.org>). That is basically GTK+ only but with some modifications to make it optimum for the mobile device. SO most of your GTK+ code should work wtht significant changes. CHeck out the maemo site it has a cool developer tutorial. But one thing struck me about the nokia main site for the device( www.nokia.com/770 <http://www.nokia.com/770>) it does not even mention the term Linux or Open source. Dont know why that is?? In fact that is how most hosts run. Just switch on and it will boot to it's default run level. If u need any additional services just add them to the default run level. rgds jtd

samba and permission

I'm using Fedora Core 1. I would like to mount a windows shared folder at fstab and allowing normal user to have read-write permissions. I have tried //192.168.0.1/linux /mnt/my_network_share/linux smbfs username=myusername,password=mypassword, default 0 0 //192.168.0.1/linux /mnt/my_network_share/linux smbfs username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,uid=root,gid=root 0 0 Both of them will mount the drive, but normal users won't be able to write? How to i make it with write permission? What am i missing? Komal

Time to vote with your wallet i suppose. AMD / VIA C3 it is for personal use until the air clears up. http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=4915 Using a mobo with the above will probably leave you exposed in a zillion ways. Even turning off the power is of no help. But for a private corporate network it has the potential to make the admins life interesting (maybe easy?). rgds jtd

Well Interoperability is a problem, but its not cos of Linux or openoffice in particular. Can openoffice help it if M$ hasn't released the specs of the .doc format (atleast i couldnt find it even after extensive search on google, if any has then please let me know), besides openoffice atleast publishes the format it uses unlike M$ who like to "lock in" their customers. Interoperability will always be an issue as long as people are seeing to it that it is.Atleast with linux, its "open" about all formats and implementations. Even if others r not keen to reveal their implementation atleast the format should be revealed. What if the company were no longer in business, what happens to all the stuff thats "locked" now. This topic was touched my Dr. Nagarjuna also at the GLUG meet before this one (the one in which we had the HURD demo) The same argument applies to almost all (probably all) M$ products. So as long as you choose a closes solution u cannot complain about interoperability (according to me). Anand

SIS651 chipset story

A year and 2 months before i bought a compaq s5030il which has sis651 chipset 128 ram and p42.6ghz pre loaded with turbo linux.In the first week it started with sudden hangup. Believe me Redington replaced the motherboard three times and the fourth time i took it to there office and i don't know what they did but it started working fine for a month and again now the same problem but i am left with no warranty on the system. The vendor even said it was because linux. There is no error at syslog, kernel log. Windows xp gives system error(102) and when error submitted states a Hardware failure. A reboot and the system may be fine for hours or sometimes in 20 to 30 minutes it will hang again. Can somebody help me with what could be the possibilty. Device manager shows everything fine. Is there any software like pc-doctor which can diagnose this problem which is a freeware in linux.Or can somebody guide me on this. I don't want to call redington guys because the maximum they would do is again replace the motherboard which they have done before. I've been having a similar peculiar problem, but the need for frequent rebooting has pointed me to the possible reason for failure: one hard disk (which just happens to be my system disk, with both Win98 and RH) keeps going off. On opening the box I find this disk is quite hot. My guess is it's heading towards failure. I plan to mirror it onto another disk at some point and save my data. It is definitely not an OS problem. -- Vickram
