Hi, Don't know if this is old news... Just snagged a book off the shelves.. Linux Bible 2005 - Chris. Negus. (I got it for rs.440) I'm just about to finish the 2nd chapter. so far so good ... not ready to comment on the book yet. But the killer thing is that the book comes with a DVD + CD ( the list as far I could see) DVD - Knoppix (bootable), RedHat FC 2, Slackware, SUSE LiveCD CD - Damn Small Linux (bootable - a knoppix variant), Debian Sarge Knoppix rocks! Yesterday was the historic day that I heard an mp3 play from linux + the sweet thing was that I was running linux off a Disc. No partitioning, no installation woes. "It simply worked !!!" I'd recommend this for someone who is just trying out Linux for the first time and doesn't want to "Initialize" his HDD Thanks, Gishu Pillai

Recoding would mostly end up with a much less than optimal solution, not counting other very MAJOR cost factors like testing and documenting and paying for people who can actually think. Deepak Phatak of the Indian Institute of Technology has kicked off an effort to create the Knowledge Public License, or KPL, a licensing program that will let programmers share ideas with one another while at the same time allowing them to retain the rights to their own software modifications. The license will likely function much like the Berkeley Software Distribution or the MIT License programs, he added. The idea is to create an environment where developers can take advantage of the collaborative power of the open-source movement while giving individuals the ability to exploit their own twists. Ideally, such a program could also help ease the raging tensions between the open-source software movement and proprietary software companies. "The free software people are afflicted by what I call the J factor, which is the jealousy factor. The proprietary people are afflicted by the G factor, the greed factor. They want to maximally extract money from the world," Phatak said in an interview here. "I am working to tell the world, 'Please permit these groups to coexist peacefully and harmoniously. There is a tremendous advantage to everyone.'" "Legally, we have to move very carefully because the Americans have a tendency to sue anybody for anything," he added. The number of open-source licensing programs has expanded rapidly in the past few years. Under some programs, such as the General Public License, developers have to publish their modifications if the modifications are used outside their own operations. Many in the open-source community have complained about the proliferation of licensing models and taken action to curtail the numbers. Budding software powerhouse If anything, Phatak's licensing proposal comes with the power of numbers. India's 1,750 colleges with computer science and electrical engineering degrees admit about 250,000 students a year, he said. That's up from 1983, when there were 70 colleges admitting 5,000 students a year. Combined with the boom in outsourcing, this makes India one of the major centers for software development. A contest sponsored by Red Hat seeking new concepts for open-source software drew more than 2,000 proposals, Phatak said. Winners will be announced in a few weeks. Phatak has also created the Ekalavya program to stimulate open-source ideas. Under the program (named after a Hindu legend), students submit ideas to a collaborative portal. Those with promising ideas are then linked up with mentors in the industry. "Let me tell you my dream: Today, India is a net taker in the open-source community. In four years, I want the world to recognize India as a net giver, and that is entirely possible" he said. While collaboration between universities and private enterprise is not as pervasive in India as it is in the U.S., it's growing, according to many sources. For instance, start-ups created to exploit technology that was developed at universities have begun to pop up, according to Rishi Navani, managing director at WestBridge Capital Partners, a venture firm specializing in Indo-U.S. investments. One example is Strand Genomics, which specializes in analytical software for drug discovery and development. Professors at major institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology or the Indian Institute of Science also sit on technology advisory boards with corporations and government agencies, which are often run by their former students. ("The IIT is a big club," said one graduate.) Recently, a large insurance company adopted thin clients rather than PCs in part because an IIT study showed that it could cut ownership costs by about two-thirds, Phatak said. A recent visitor to Phatak's office was Microsoft Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie. "I told him a competitive price point (for a desktop OS) would be in the single digit dollars," Phatak said. Word wrapping in Emacs

I wanted to know how to set up word-wrapping in Emacs. I went to the top level customization group -> Editing -> Fill and set a few options, but there seems to be no difference. Also, will the word wrapping work if I go back and press a few backspaces? Is there a way to justify-align my text documents? Acers Laptop Ad in Times of India (today: 9th May '05), page 15.the "fine print" *** "the Linux that is loaded is a free version and would have limited functionality until another operating system is installed" *** this is really stupid!... can anything be done to educate the acer guys? this doesn't make any sense. It is extremely misleading. What "Missing / defunct " functionality are they talking about? I think it will take us very little time to get *fully* functional *free* *Linux* working on that laptop that they can give out. anyone has any contact with acer? Free software doest work like proprietary stuff which revels in *limited" functionality. Ads like these are _extremely misleading, damaging and do more to confuse people about GNU / FSF than anything else. more M$ fud ? c'ya Erle

Apart from the moral and legal issues it is a pain to maintain upgrades to your code given the everchanging hardware and software environment. In any case imo you are better off with Debian if you are not using RH's / Suse's services. Using their services allows you to concentrate on your bussiness instead of worrying about a million different things. GNU/Linux is definetly a very happening place I assure you. Particularly in organizations with poor IT setups. And there are many such with 300 up pcs and a handful of servers. Why should RH be bothered with 40 machines, when the same effort can rake in the cash for 400. In this case the rights assigned to a recipient is contingent on the fact that the same right is automatically assigned to the next recipient, without exception of any kind. So if distributor signs a contract to the contrary with anyone they have automatically abrogated their right to distribute and are in fact in violation of the copyrights of numerous contributors to the distro. Eg you cannot have a contract with me to sell Devdas' house, because u dont own it.But suppose Devdas leases his house to you with a clause permitting subleasing, subject to the condition that the subleasee can further sublease in whole or part and that no leasee can remove this clause in their downstream sublease contract.
