Hi Directly coming to the point. Suppose I have 3 ethernet connections from 3 diff. ISPs. How can I make failover from one to another. Like suppose first fails second shud come up if second fails the 3rd shud takeover and restore 1st connection when it comes up. Regards Mangesh

hi i m trying to record voice from an external dlink 56k modem by dialing into the line. well i m able to record voice it and store it in an rmd ( raw modem data format ) file and then converting it to wav format. the problem comes when i want to stop recording by pressing one of the numeric or # / * keys. if i look for anyof the keys it stops recording immediately. is there a way to identify dtmf codes which is a part of audio stream Harsh

*Minutes of January GLUG-Meet @ Netcore Solutions* The GNU/Linux Users Group of Mumbai held its January GLUG meet on 9th January 2005 at Netcore Solutions, Lower Parel. This meet was attended by about 30 people coming from all over the city. Philip, Kiran paid a surprise visit at the meet. This meet also saw us giving a farewell to Karunakar. Following talks and discussions were held. * Open Source Architecture - by Satish Mohan. Satish Mohan from RedHat talked about the OpenSource architecture and the development work being carried out by RedHat in various areas. He talked about the GFS filesystem and redhat's RHN service which enables centralized management. --- tea break :-) * Farewell to Karunakar G. This meet also saw us giving a farewell to the stalwart of Indic Computing and Indian language localization, Indlinux.org project. Karunakar has played a tremendous role in resolving the technical issues around Indian language computing and his expertise has been sought by FLOSS localization groups in Nepal, Bhutan and other countries. Venky, Nagarjuna, Neerav shared their experiences with Karunakar and managed Karunakar to speak a few words. Thunderbird Printing

The print quality in thunderbird improved by making some changes in its font settings. 1. In Preferences, in the Display option, instead of default 'Fixed Width Font', the 'Variable Width Font' was selected. This gave a better shape to the font look. 2. In Preferences, in the Fonts option, the 'Proportional' and 'Monospace' fonts text boxes were given the option 'Sans Serif'. This also improved the look of the messages in the window too. lan connection problem

hi i had a redhat 7.1 server connected over bnc cable to a windoze machine. No problems. I changed the server to mandrake10 and the cable to utp - just a crossover cable. the nic cards on the two machines have been tested and they work. When the cable is connected, both lan cards show a steady green light. But ping doesnt ping. They guy who made the cable says that if the green lights are steady on both sides it means the wiring is correct. Is he right? -- regards kg tally ho! http://avsap.sourceforge.net

By accepting gross licence violations u are doing a grave injustice ] to GNU/Linux. There have been court cases by foss developers (Netfilter) against bussineses violating the GPL. Linksys - CISCO were forced to publish their modifications when the FSF threatened legal action. They too had wishy washy arguments for violating others rights. And BTW the list cribbers are the ones who have spent their time and money repeatedly in holding seminars and training sessions (Dr. Nagarjuna, Philip, Dinesh, Parag, Trevor, me rarely :-( and several others). So go ahead and oraganise one for cybercafe's AFTER their assoc has done their miniscule favour to themselves. I will most certainly be there to help at the seminar in any way u suggest. Since u are talking of clusters which is not a regular newbie task i am sure u will know how. If you need tools search at http://freshmeat.net/ or http://sourceforge.net/search/ and of course finally google. Post the results of your research if u want something meaningful. It took me all of one minute to find the above five pages. Since cluster managment (or any other app for that matter) depends on the nature of the problem u are trying to solve u are likely to get stupid or rant responses like this one to a stupid question. And this was preeceded by a loooong argument about laziness and ineptitude on the list if u bother to read. rgds jtd

When the cybercafe owner is a pirate, the main loser (at least in India) is billy boy (unless cafes have illegal copies ;-) of Tally), but I doubt anyone on this list is going to weep copiously about that. Practically every other popular software application needed on Windows comes free, and is probably designed that way precisely because the vendor or developer wants it to be that way. All the cybercafe owner needs is a viable alternative (cost effective and workable) to M$ piracy for the present, I suspect. But this can only be determined at the meeting, not by the kind of occasional and casual guesswork that outsiders (ie, non-cafe operators on this list, including me) can perform. Is the list expected to grow (and exponentially, let's not fool ourselves about which technology we are enthused by, and the way it is growing) or is it intended to be confined to a cosy little closed group of narcissists? There will always be newbies, and there will always be people who only need to know the basics to get their work done, there will be people who know a lot and that is their work, and hopefully there will be lots of people who not only know a lot, but are willing to take that extra step to work and help others - at what cost, only an informed discussion can determine. I sincerely hope there will be people here on this list who are enthused by this chance. My suggestion that we look at a coalition of interests (hardware - which is to say assemblers - suppliers, maintenance specialists, network specialists, integrators, buyers and finally end-consumers) that can exchange views on services, service levels and structures around which such services can be effectively marketed. For instance (maybe it doesn't need a meeting to determine this, but somehow we humans do love being heard), maybe we can consider a formal or informal FOSS collective or guild, with rules or guidelines governing rates, SLAs and distro designs. Maybe it needs a small-scale business to do this. Why close our minds to the possibilities before they are even discussed? But why are there so many list cribbers who seem to think that new avenues of making money should not even be discussed before dismissing the concept right away? I recently got inducted into the linuxers group. and no offense but most of the articles have been going way over my head. i'd like to know where do i begin? what should i go for? i duno What is BASH or Shell Scripting? I Dunno which distribution is good? whether fedora core or suse or mandrake or unbunto or the most recent one Xandros(hyped to throw windows replace in near future) the scenario here is like water water everywhere but not a drop to drink. there are hundreds of tuts available for Linux. but its truly confusing. i'd be grateful to find a good way to get around all this. plus i, being my college IEEE Secretary, am interested in organising a Linux Seminar or may be two. 1. To introduce my fellow students like me to Linux 2. To Tell them in Deep About Linux, esply About shell scripting. i'd wanna know if any of you would be interested in coming forward to conduct it. people interested can inform me. Infact there is a whole new market emerging for servers and maintaining them in small and medium enterprise. In short opportunities caused by free availability of a total computing environment - development tools, applications, manuals, Source code, hardware designs, massive totally cooperative technically very competent user community for everything u could possible imagine. All u need to add is a bussiness plan and your resources. If you had to pay for the above to get even a small bussiness started your investment would be anywhere between Rs.10 to 40 lacs. AND guess what after spending all that moolah Billy boy and gang would be taking away the lions share of the money u collect. It tickles me no end to see the "idiots" in our industry spending their hard earned cash to enrich a crooked corporation who will use the same to fleece them again and again. What is SLA? Service Level agreement. It defines your responsibilites in terms of time to respond and solve a problem and liability if u fail to do so. I am sure the drivers will already be there. The devices for which drivers are not available is because the manufacturer refuses to provide hardware details. does ubuntu have apt-get?

I finally got enough money to get a new OS. So far I've tried only RPM based distros. I have heard only good things about Ubuntu - single CD though based on Debian. What I want to know is after installing Ubuntu, using the much talked about apt-get (provided I'm connected to the net), can I get specific Debian software packages (say related to engineering and such stuff) onto my OS ? hi, my new year resolution: whatever it takes, avsap must knock tally off its pedestal positives: translation is no problem - enough guys around to do it tally has opted for mysql and shot themselves in the foot avsap has tamil, telugu, gujarati and hindi - tally doesnt negatives: indians dont like to work for free conclusion: as long as there are guys to translate, i'll do the rest btw like tally, avsap is hiring: no pay, only qualifications is a willingness to work invoicing and inventory control modules should be up in a week happy new year all kg

Rubini and Corbet and lot of other authors (incuding you) have given us the basic knowledge required and maybe even a complex PSEUDO-device driver. Also, one may argue, there are drivers with source in the linux source and also freely available on the net. However, unless we end-up writing a full fledged dd from scratch, I think the education remains incomplete. I hope you are getting I'm driving at. Thanks Raseel Bhagat
