Hello Luggers,
I tried the softwares for a bootable RAM tester floppy from both the sites
below.
http://www.memtest86.com/www.simmtester.com
The simmtester worked excellently. The memtest one hung my (good) comp half
way while testing. So the simmtester one is worth keeping in your handy
floppy collection, to check for bad RAMs.

Rony.
Hi
Well the directory has 777 permissions, and I mean any
user "xyz" not only "root".
But the point is that as the file is readonly how is
vi allowing to do forced write, and change the
ownership of file? Even if it allows this then
should't it be restricted to root or at most the
owner/group-members!!
The version of vi that I use is
"vim-enhanced-6.2.98-1" on a RedHat9.

If all the files are downloaded and md5sums do not match, it is a waste of
time and bandwidth. Sad but true :(.

What are list members experience about Red Hat Enterprise Linux support and
services? It is worth paying huge amount of money for support? After reading
article on lwn about Enterprise Linux: is it broken?
I wonder whitebox Linux initiatives worth following.
Is it true that numbers of Red Hat supports call are found on popular Linux
news group?

Some years back I read a whitepaper from techrepublic.com about harddisk failures
and what to do in such cases. Freezing a harddisk was one of things to try incase
it won't spin up. The paper even mentioned of a hard disk that used to spin-up
only when tapped on the side with a screwdriver, and stopped immediately.
According to the report, the technician attending the problem continuously tapped
the disk for two hours so that the client could transfer his data to another
harddisk.
I wanted to know if there is any 'scandisk' sort of utility for Linux. I know
about "fsck", but it warns me against running it on mounted filesystems. It
doesn't run even in the single user mode.
Actually, after I went thru the startup scripts (Fedora Core 1), I saw that it
checked for a command line argument ("forcefsck") and ran the checking utility.
That worked. But is there a better solution than that? I mean, everytime I want
to check the filesystem, I dont want to go thru grub.

Hi all,
Consider a file with read-only permissions for all
that is r--r--r-- is a directory with permissions of
777. The owner of the file is say a user "abc".
1.Any other user say "xyz" can write to this file
after opening it with vi using a forced write(wq!).
2.After the forced write "xyz" becomes the owner of
the file.

does it detect the ethernet card?

Yeah it does show the Card details .. it's a DLink Lan Card. So it shows "Realtek ...."
If "redhat-config-network-gui" is the same dialog brought up
from the Desktop Start Menu->System..->Network.
I tried that before posting here.. it shows the network card inactive. I tried putting in a static IP
instead of the default DHCP, didn't work.
I get a message box "Unable to activate..."

Dear noel,
Please follow the following steps to build the new image kernel.
You have not mentioned the kernel version here.
For 2.4.x kernel, please follow the following steps. All these steps
should perform from the kernel source directory i.e. /usr/src/linux-2.4
1. make menuconfig - we can do the
modifications here.
2. make dep - updates the
dependencies.
3. make bzImage - creates the image file under
i386 directory.
4. make modules
5. make modules_install - before executing this command
please change the EXTRAVERSION
variable in the source
directory under linux/version.h
Based on this name it
will create the modules
directory under /lib/modules...
6. make install - This will copy the System.map
and bzImage files to
/boot directory and creates
the links and finally updates
/etc/grub.conf files.
For more information please follow the following link.

Hi all,
I am facing some problems with working on "php". I
have installed Apache 2 as the webserver on a RedHat
9.I also have mysql installed.
I downloaded the php-5.0.2 source and on running the
./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs2 there are no
error messages. make and make install also don't give
any error messages.
In the httpd.conf file th following lines were added
LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
But then upon opening any "php" file I still get a
blank page in the browser.
The Apache server is works well with html files.
I will be greatful for the help. Thanks in advance.

IT WORKS....IT WORKS....IT WORKS!!!!
Whew!! got the machine to run, at last. the contact
between the cpu and the
heatsink turned out to be the culprit. just took out
the heatsink/fan,
re-applied some thermal compound and put it back in.
Voila! everything's
fine with the world again!!
Thanks to all of you for your kind help, advice and
suggestions. ilug-bom
