Linux home networking

After a rush of blood to the head, I got Steven's network programming book and installed RHL 8 on my old machine.. But predictably enough, I got stuck in no time... after some tinkering with my drives and an accidental partition format, I have RHL8 on dual boot working . But the network doesn't work... So I have a machine running WinXP and lots of crunching power connected to my trusty P2 running Win98 and RHL8. The trouble now is that WinXP and Win98 autodetect network settings and able to communicate with each other. RHL 8 on the other hand is struggling to activate the ethernet card which it has detected. Task 1 : Activate the network card Task 2 : I think Samba is used to share files with Windows. What I need is to be able to browse the files on the Linux box via the Windows explorer and vice versa Any help or pointer to a how-to would be appreciated. Thanks, Gishu Pillai

Hi Veer, guess what? i changed the smps and now the system starts up. one problem solved. but i'm into another soup now! as i mentioned in my first post, the system powered off suddenly while i was working on something. well, actually at that time i was trying to re-install windoze xp. i dual-boot with xp & gnu/linux (mandrake 9.1 - kernel 2.4.2<something>) . xp installed on c: and wasn't working. the system went off in the middle of the installation process. now when i start the machine, the fans work, hdd works, cd drive works but i don't get any display and no POST,i.e., i'm not getting the single beep on boot. the hdd activity led stays constantly on. indicates some problem with bios. does it has to do anything with the fact that i changed the cmos battery while the system was down? [ILUG-BOM] Unable to boot from new Image after compilation of kernel

Hi, I am trying to load scsi drivers on my RHL8.0 kernel 2.4.18-14. As per the driver docs, I need to rebuild the kernel with scsi support and then load the modules. I have run the following; make menuconfig make dep make bzImage The image is created in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot directory and have copied the same to /boot edited /etc/grub.conf and added the new image as initrd /bzImage When I try to boot into linux using this kernel I get the following message. VFS: Cannot open boot device "LABEL=/" please append a correct "root=" boot option kernel panic :VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00 Am able to boot using the previously installed kernel. The other lines in grub.conf are copy/pasted and same as previous entries. Where am I going wrong. Do I really need to recompile the kernel or is there some other way to load the scsi drivers. One more info, once I make bzImage, it gives me the following information: Boot sector is 512 bytes setup is 4774 bytes ssytem is 1144 kb kernel is too high for standalone boot from floppy make [1] leaving ....... I tried deselecting some of the options like bluetooth, etc in make menuconfig, but the size of the bzImage does not go below 950Kb. Making Compressed CDROM in GNU/Linux

Hi! Wrote this small howto for making compressed CD's in Linux. New users will certainly appreciate the fact Linux provides much more features than just security,stability and speed as compared to other popular OS'es. Making Compressed CDROM in Linux Nikhil Joshi Introduction I had often wondered whether there is a way to zip your files, burn them on a CD and then decompress them on-the-fly to save space. Well the good news is there is a method to do the same! Linux provides a Transparent decompression extension to achieve the same. It is useful when you have a lot of text/HTML/ doc files to burn on the CD and you want to save the precious space. It is especially useful to view the e-books which are mostly in HTML format. Prepare the Kernel CAVEAT: Please note that the CD that we are going to make will only be readable in Linux environment as Windows does not have the Transparent decompression extension. First we have to enable the Transparent decompression extension in the kernel. Compiling the kernel is a tricky business and requires patience and will to learn something new. Download and unpack the latest 2.6 series stable kernel from http:// www.kernel.org/ 2. Type make menuconfig 3. Goto File Systems -> CDROM/DVD Filesystems and enable Transparent decompression extension 4. make; make modules; make modules_install 5. Copy the bzImage to /boot and update the bootloader configuration appropriately The commands Now that we have the kernel ready let's see the commands. Put everything you want to compress in a directory. First we make a compressed directory hierarchy of the directory we want to compress. $ mkzftree intree outree creates a compressed directory (outree) out of a normal directory (intree). Now we will make an iso image out of the directory hierarchy. $ mkisofs -o mycd.iso -R -allow-lowercase -allow-multidot -l -L - z outree That's it!! We have created an iso file which we can burn using any CD Burning Software. I use k3b (http://www.k3b.org/) on Linux. Conclusion I created a normal iso image out of a directory tree and another iso image out of the compressed directory tree. The space savings were obvious: 591MB for normal iso and 448MB using compression. A gain of 143 MB. This directory tree had lots of PDF files which do not compress well as compared to ASCII text files. Overall the space saving was considerable and I am already a fan of Transparent decompression. -- Often it takes some calamity to make us live in the present. Then suddenly we wake up and see all the mistakes we have made. But it is too late to change anything. -- Calvin

Hi, I don't have any pointers but this idea might help If you could enable passwordless ssh login to all machines, thru ssh, grep your log files with a pattern and redirect output to a file in those machines, scp that output file into a master node and check if file empty, good else not alert thru mail / console.
