I'am sorry if my explanation is completely illogical...but this is what I figured out ........pls inform me if my notion is completely wrong..... In a system like Windoze ---->DLL--->EXE (RAM)---->Compiled but no check for size of compiled output. In GNU/Linux OS ---->object/.so----->binary/daemon(RAM)---->Compiled and checked for size of compiled o/p. And as for shell scripts, and rpm's which we blindly execute sometimes........pls do a md5 verification to check for trusted signatures........ Because GNU/Linux systems are not written by MS guys who simply execute any file just because it pretended its content-type to be an audio file. In my opinion MS always had policy to make system more user-friendly(trying to auto-play a sound file for user) at cost of security(and executing exe instead). This bug and so many other bugs are so obvious(assuming MS has good developers!) that sometimes I feel they are kept on purpose, so that they can ask user to upgrade to their new OS/apps claiming to be MORE safe. In my opinion MS always had policy to make system more user-friendly(trying to auto-play a sound file for user) at cost of security(and executing exe instead). This bug and so many other bugs are so obvious(assuming MS has good developers!) that sometimes I feel they are kept on purpose, so that they can ask user to upgrade to their new OS/apps claiming to be MORE safe. Hi Nachiketa, Well i guess u're using ext3 fs , have u compiled the module into the kernel or is it a loadable module ? Unable to boot the upgraded kernel

Hi, I have fedora core 1 on my computer, recently I updated the kernel from 2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp to 2.4.22-1.2149.nptlsmp through yum from redhat update site. After the update I am not able to boot the new kernel. The older kernel boots without any problem. The machine gives a kernel panic, with the last few lines of the display as follows: Mounting /proc filesystem Creating block devices Creating root device mkrootdev: label / not found Mounting root filesystem mount: error 2 mounting ext3 pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2 umount /initrd/proc failed: 2 freeing unused kernel memory: 164k freed kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. I have a Intel 865GBF Motherboard with Pentium 4 2.6HT processor 2Gb DDR SD RAM and a 120 MB SATA drive ST3120026AS and PATA ST380011A hard disks. I boot from the sata drive /dev/sda Please give me some pointers to look into to rectify the problem. Please also indicate if more information is required to diagnose the problem. Hi Abhir, Just a suggestions. In the time you searched, posted e-mail, replied to replies, you could have written the reader/parser library yourself. Is there a C/C++ library available to parse a configuration file and get the value of different variables specified therein? I know about gnome-config. Maybe there is something similar for Qt. Get More RAM (since lower ram = more swap file usage = slower / inefficient performance) d. Recomend use of less resource hungary software (galeon instead of mozilla) e. Do not fully shut off software that you are going to use again and again (eg, minimise mozilla instead of closing it when you finish looking at a webpage) An additional point I guess we can also make here is that in MS Windows XP also, most software takes time to open. Outlook express takes more than 20 seconds (and massive HDD Access) to open and MSOffice XP is much worse. We can not compare a PC running Win98 to RedHat9. That comparison does not make sense. [snip] Talking of the preloader of mozilla in Windows, can we have a *generalized* pre-loader in linux ?? I would say it wouldn't be too difficult to write a daemon that preloads stuff and keeps general statistics as to which executable/library is used the most. This would increase the booting time by little but the net result should be quite surprising in my opinion. IE starts so fast in windows is because just about everything that it requires is preloaded when windows boots. On the other hand most of the stuff that mozilla needs is loaded when it is started. Taking up the proj. anyone ? I might do so, but let me know if it would really make a difference. X configuration

hi, i am running rh9.0 in runlevel 5. kde is the default window manager. many times during boot, the graphics are not loaded. the services turn on, after which the text prompt is shown. the next step is to get a graphical login. but often the graphics get scrambled. i get a few vertical lines flashing like in X configuration and then need to reboot. but mostly gui mode starts up without any errors with proper colors, mouse etc. why does X not load sometimes? i have an onboard intel extreme graphics card on an intel 845 gbv motherboard. as i mentioned earlier mostly X and kde run smoothly. thanks rahul

Your problem seems not to be a generally observed phenomenon. man! i am not complaining about the hdd access my system does.... mine is a RHL8.0 on a P3-933 mhz, with 128MB SD RAM, the hard disk also runs at 5400 something RPM... swap alloted is half GB, i've seen hdd access right from the days i had RHL6.0, then 7.1 and now 8.0... I've always chosen to do a full installation off the CDs, just to taste everything that's inside... Agreed i have many services running, I just turn it on to work with it... telnetting into smtp/ftp/telnet servers... I think the people here are comparing the hdd access of M$ windows with gnu/linux... Windows loads all the configuration settings (Registry) into the RAM at startup, whereas gnu/linux apps have to read the config files the first time they start (am just speculating a reason)...also many services report their errors to the root's mailbox... These might be one of the many reasons of unexpected hdd access... Is my justification correct???
