Hi all, There is one situation...imagine a intranet which is to be hooked up to internet through a proxy server. do you know any intelligent proxy server that will allow dynamic bandwidth allocation with user starvation prevention....to talk in simple terms... 1. i should be able to allocate max bandwidth usage to a user in peak traffic time 2. when traffic is not present, this limit can be exccedded normally this will happen, i mean, if there is only one user, he would enjoy faster speed. but as the users add up, the speed slows down drastically. and the operation is not deterministic...i cannot guarantee that a particular user is limited using a max bandwidth qouta any clues/links..??? links to HOWTOs would be great.. Well, If u can burn u're CD while listen to music and also convert mpeg to Divx and surfing the NET too,u can call a celeron a processor. On My Athlon 1800+ machine thses tasks r trivial. So may be u shud try all these and then rethink. in my office, i connect to a RedHat gnu/linux m/c through telnet (actually through a software called "putty", which uses telnet as the underlying communication protocol). the initial welcome/login screen shows the following msg: Red Hat Linux release 7.2 (Enigma) ^^^ Kernel 2.4.7-10 on an i686 but the contents of "/proc/version" are: Linux version 2.4.7-10 (<some email id>) (gcc version 2.96 20000731) (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98) #<today's date> ^^^ any convincing explanation to the above weirdity, would be greatly appreciated. also, i have a small question, which is related to the above query (actually, it might solve the above absurdity ;-) ) does the file "/proc/version" change (or is updated) at every reboot (or some other convinient time interval). i.e. if i change the entry in "/proc/version" to make it RHL 7.2, will it stay like that forever (or until someone changes it), or will it get rectified at the next reboot? also where does the display shown at login time come from? thanks for all the help!

Hi The contents of the /proc/version file is not actually wierd it looks almost same as of urs on all systems of Red Hat Linux. This file gives you the version of Linux Kernel, GCC, the version of RedHat Linux installed in your system and dthat email id is of the development team of RedHat Linux so you can email the bugs to them. The display message that you see at the time of login comes from the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files. If your logging in through the local terminal in text mode just change the /etc/issue file to what ever you want and that will be displayed everytime you try to login. If you are trying login remotely using telnet or SSH just change the /etc/issue.net file and it will show you the message that you want at the time of login. these changes are permanent and needs to be done only once. Hi all, i have got a server having a 40 GB seagate Harddisk. When i tried to install Red Hat 7.2/8.0 on it , it got stuck at the time of partitioning. it display this error:- "an error has occurred-no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems.Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem". As i think it will due to that this fresh machine doesn't have SCSi Dreiver. Can anybody help me. Hi Dipali, If you have forgot the root password for ur system then its a little bit of head ache but dont worry you can still get to change the new password. If you are using RedHat Linux then just do the following steps. I hope that you have a rescue boot disk created at the time of installation or atleast have the RedHat installation CDs. Boot through the CD or floppy drive and at the boot prompt type linux single and press enter this will take you to single user mode from where you can change the root password to a new one and reboot the system and log in to your root account as usual. If you are using LILO as your boot loader then simply type linux single at the boot prompt and the rest will be same. I hope this fixes ur prob. I have installed knoppix 3.2 (I know 3.3 is available) I have done apt-get update and some 90 programs have been installed or upgraded. I now have kde 3.1.4. My only problem (at present) is that the screen resolution is 800x600 and I can get 1024x768 in redhat 9 as well as slackware 9 on the same box. hi , i am plannig to buy a new PC, and have problems reagarding the selection of processor. I want a AMD Athalon XP( 1.8Ghz) processor(with 256MB DDRAM) but there have been rumours that the processor gets heated up and could hang the system. My room is not well ventilated, only cooling source is Fan. In such a case would AMD give me a problem? Has anyone worked with XP series processors and how was your experience? The machine would be used solely for Linux( thats why I want to get a cheap processor ). Which MotherBoard is the best buy for AMD Athalon XP 1800 ? What i read form 'Digit' was, MSI KT4 Ultra(with VIA KT400 chipset) motherboard works great with AMD Athalon XP 2600. Seems like the SNR on the list is increasing all over again. People top-post when replying, and to top that [sic], they write a two liner after quoting an entire previous mail, sometimes even quoting the earlier messages as well! Please trim messages, and write in-line replies ... it helps a lot in terms of readability, and the size of message digests. Also, over the years, I have found it pretty useful when the subject line is relevant to the content of the message. Hi, I have configured my squid.conf settings and kept most of the settings as default to test the squid. but now, when i run the squid using squid service start or i try squid -z it shows following error : ---------- FATAL: Could not determine fully qualified hostname. Please set 'visible_hostname' Squid Cache (Version 2.5.STABLE1): Terminated abnormally. CPU Usage: 0.020 seconds = 0.010 user + 0.010 sys Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB Page faults with physical i/o: 387 Aborted ---------- my visible_hostname is Taj1 I tried to comment visible_hostname also but same error... (The hostname i have given is same as in the /etc/hosts . I have read all the docs and FAQs but still didnt find the solution.) since i m running this on local network so didnt give any .com or any other domain. My problem is that whenever I choose lycoris for booting , it shows "error 28 message". the message says " the selected item could not fit into memory". I am naive to linux terminology.
