Dear Friends: The PUKAR MONSOON SYMPOSIUM begins today, SATURDAY 19 JULY at 6.00 P.M., with a panel discussion on urban water supply featuring INDU AGARWAL from SPARC (Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres) Mumbai, KALPANA SHARMA, Deputy Editor of The Hindu, Mumbai, and DAVID SATTHERTHWAITE from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), London, U.K. The PUKAR Monsoon Symposium is a week-long series of panel discussions, film screenings, and presentations by students and researchers, which continues from today until SATURDAY 26 JULY 2003. See below for the complete shedule of activities over the coming week. All the activities in the Monsoon Symposium are free and open to the public, and we particularly encourage students and teachers to attend and participate in the Symposium, which will be followed by workshops and activities in undergraduate colleges in Mumbai on the theme of water and the city. PUKAR Monsoon 2003: "On Cities, On Water" Water as substance and as medium has been central to urban development throughout human history. In Mumbai, as in many other world cities, the modern urban experience is definitively connected to the city's geographical form as island, and its location on the coastline. In the context of globalisation, other dimensions of water, and of the relationship between cities and water are becoming increasingly visible and contested in the public arena -- notably, the privatisation of water resources and the infrastructural networks delivering water. What is the PUKAR Monsoon? The PUKAR Monsoon is an annual series of occassional lectures, workshops and pedagogic activities organised from May to August every year, in which undergraduate college students address a specific theme through a variety of creative approaches to documentation and education of urban life. The aim of PUKAR Monsoon 2003 has been to facilitate debate and reflection, encourage artistic, intellectual and creative expression, and develop hands-on skills in documenting the political and cultural implications of the many connections between cities and water. PUKAR Monsoon 2003 began with the DOC-SHOP -- an eight-day student workshop for students held from 19-27 May 2003 -- and continues with pedagogic activities in undergraduate colleges throughout Mumbai in July and August 2003, when colleges open. The government of Kazakhstan promises a better future in 2030. They have to promise something for the future. For an old fisherman kneeling in front of his grounded boat the only prospect is sand stretching out as far as the eye can see. Problems accessing Windows NT

Hi, I am facing a problem in GNU/LINUX. I tried Red hat 7.1, 7.2, and 8 and also EBZ Linux from Linux for U mag. , but I am facing the same problem. I am not able to access any of the Windows NT machines on my network from the linux machine, but I am able to access other win 2k, windows 9x, and windows xp machines from the Linux machine. Do i need any patch or some config. change from either side for things to happen smoothly. Please help me. Ketan

how much effort to port the kernel ?

hi, In order to port the kernel to a new microprocessor architecture, i need to write the machine specific code for the routines in the /arch directory. is that all, or other source files are to be modified as well? note that i am not specifying any arcitecture, and leaving the question very generic. i want to know how much effort and skill one has to put to port the kernel. trouble booting into GNU/LINUX

Hello linuxers, I recently upgraded my system to an Athlon XP 2000+ , 256 mb DDR RAM , 80 GB HDD , Asus A7N266-VM motherboard with a built in GEFORCE 2 MX display card. I installed red hat 7.3 on the new system (dual boot with windows 98 se running on the primary partition). However when i try to boot into linux i get the following error message : ------------------------------------------------------------------ root(hd0,8) file system type is ext2fs partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-3 ro root=/dev/hda9 hdc=ide-scsi [linux-bzimage,setup-0x1400,size=0xff8b0] error 28: selected item doesn't fit into memory. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Thinking that it could possibly have something to do with the location on the HDD where linux was installed , I reinstalled red hat 7.3 on an old 4.3 GB HDD as the only OS ; still getting the same error though. Could someone please pin point the cause of the problem and suggest a way of getting around it. -- Thanking You'll, Lech.

FLASH NEWS: Trevor spotted in a GLUG meet!

Hi guys, Sending in the minutes of the meeting held on 13th July. I put in as much as I could remember, please fill in if I missed anything. First thing to mention is the HUGE turnout for the meet ... the entire KReSIT classroom was filled with people, which means the attendance was roughly in the neighbourhood of 60. And on top of that, if you see faces like Philip, Trevor, Dinesh, Manish, and Terrence in the same meet, you /know/ its BIG! The meeting started out with a session on KDE/Qt programming by Amish Munshi. He talked about the set of tools that go into building a KDE application, with a quick tour of the documentation. Overall impression was the simplicity with which one can build apps the KDE way. After that, though not officially on the agenda, Trevor jumped in with a screeing of "The Code", featuring a lot of the prominent personalities from the FLOSS community. The movie is pretty interesting, and highly recommended for people who aim to convert techies into the FLOSS philosophy. The movie really gives a flavour of the community as a whole and how good software gets done in the Open Source way. An interesting part is where the movie highlights the difference between Open Source and Free Software through their prime advocates ESR and RMS respectively. The next talk was Prof. Jitendra Shah, about the on the ongoing effort on localisation of GNU/Linux for India. He mentioned a website which intends to keep track of the translation efforts and a short introduction to how a non-techie can help in translation. http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/~swapnil/indictrans/ Karunakar also demonstrated the IndLinux (Milan) CD based no a re-mastered Morphix CD. The CD has a number of partially completed Indian locales to use normal applications. Answering a doubt raised by Trevor, Karunakar explained that all the work being done in the localisation is already being merged into the mainstream repositories. This means that the new releases of most distros will have built-in Indian Locale support. Debian Sid (unstable) for example, already has Indian Locale support since it is based on bleeding edge package versions. Finally there as a call for volunteers and planning help from SameerDS for a GNU/Linux workshop to be conducted in the IITB Distance Education Program. Such a workshop will be conducted in KReSIT premises, to be attended by participants in 5 different cities over the DEP telecom network. The popular suggestion was to hold this talk for PC Vendors, since they are the best medium to take GNU/Linux to bigger masses such as SOHO users and individuals. The workshop will primarily be a series of talks, to be held on Sunday, 24th of August. Unfortunately, the topic for the venue of the next meet did not come up, which will have to be decided on the List now. help required with kernel compiling

i have compiled the 2.4.20 kernel on my system. i've got the foll problems: 1. i have usb port on my system, but i don't use them. so i disabled the usb support. so i get the foll error while booting: "cannot initialise usb-uhci". is the above thing compulsory to be initialised? does it create any problems if it is not initialised? 2. i get the foll error on bootup: "cannot find module char-major-10.." what does the above error mean? what is it related to? what effects does it have on the system? how can i overcome the error? 3. i cannot get the system to auto-shutdown, as can be done on my default Red Hat 7.3 kernel (2.4.18-3). how do i get the kernel to do an auto-shutdown? i'll be very grateful, if someone could help me out with the above problems -- HACKER: Someone who loves to program and loves being clever about it. --- Pradnyesh Sawant (The Doubtfire) B.E. You are cordially invited to the PUKAR MONSOON SYMPOSIUM, a week-long series of panel discussions, film screenings, and presentations by students and researchers on water and the city. The PUKAR Monsoon is an annual series of occassional lectures, workshops and pedagogic activities organised from May to August every year, in which undergraduate college students address a specific theme through a variety of creative approaches to documentation and education of urban life. The aim of PUKAR Monsoon 2003 has been to facilitate debate and reflection, encourage artistic, intellectual and creative expression, and develop hands-on skills in documenting the political and cultural implications of the many connections between cities and water. Water as substance and as medium has been central to urban development throughout human history. In Mumbai, as in many other world cities, the modern urban experience is definitively connected to the city's geographical form as island, and its location on the coastline. In the context of globalisation, other dimensions of water, and of the relationship between cities and water are becoming increasingly visible and contested in the public arena -- notably, the privatisation of water resources and the infrastructural networks delivering water. The government of Kazakhstan promises a better future in 2030. They have to promise something for the future. For an old fisherman kneeling in front of his grounded boat the only prospect is sand stretching out as far as the eye can see. Parcels of land are turned into rice paddies following the model of the Etang de Thau, and the small vegetable gardens planted on top of the town walls are preserved. Huê, the 19th century Imperial City, reconnects with is traditions and its water heritage. 19.15-18.00 FILM: "The Village of the Mist" (Nina Peliaeva and George Trivano, 12 minutes) At Chungungo, in Northern Chile, rain never falls. Since there are no springs in the village, every week, water is brought to the inhabitants by lorry. However, the village is near the sea, and every morning, a thick mist rises up along the mountain slopes. Scientists have thought up a simple but effective way of collecting the mist to obtain water. Up to 60,000 litres of water per day can be produced when there is mist. This has changed the life of the village.
