Finding the maximum color depth?

My system has ATI Radeon video card (AGP) and a very good monitor that supports 1600x1200 resolution. I have used the default XF96Config generated by xf86cfg. The color depths listed in the Xf86Config are 1,4,8,15,16,24. How do I find out what is the maximum depth supported on this card? Setting up Wallpaper in fvwm

Hello, I am slowly (very) getting to understand the fvwm2 configuration. My desktop is slowly looking the way I would like it to look like. The only thing missing is the wallpaper. I am using Gnome 2 on Slackware 9 with fvwm 2.4.16. I tried to set a wall paper using GThumb and that did not work. How do I setup a wallpaper when fvwm session begins? fvwm and Mozilla

Hello again, It is about fvwm again. When I open some applications (particularly Mozilla, Netscape, GThumb) my wallpaper and the application do change into some psychdelic backgrounds. Each time the mouse focus moves from the application to the desktop or vice versa, the colors get swapped. I do not have any problems apps such as Acrobat or OpenOffice etc. They are working fine. Has anyone seen this behaviour before? How do I fix these color changes in display? Stability, virus-free (except one work once ... for sticking to RedHat 6.2 long long after it was recommended, simple and clean tools and hardly any use of 'pirated' tools). But it takes time to get over the uncertainity and fear. Kernel Compilation Blues

Hi, I am trying to install the new kernel 2.5.70, from kernel.org I compiled the kernel and the modules and installed it using make install. I installed the modules too using make modules_install. However after making the necessary changes to lilo and rebooting, I could not boot into the new kernel. The comp says "Uncompressing Linux..... ok" and hangs. No messages further. no error message... nothing. I tried it with initrd (and necessary changes to lilo.conf) using mkinitrd but even that does not work. Where am I going wrong? What modules will be required in the initrd files? I used only ext2 and ext3. -- Goldwyn :o) Windows 95 never has bugs. It just develops random features.

Problem regarding Ejection of KNOPPIX Cd

Ans: Red Hat has been at the forefront of evangelising the use of Open source & Linux in India.It has been working closely with the Government and the corporate sector towards educating them on the benefits of adopting the Linux as their platformvfor deploying Corporate applications. Simultaneosuly, keeping the home user in mind, it also launched extremely user friendly Linux Distributions of the likes of Red Hat Linux 8.0 last year and Red Hat Linux 9 this month. Corporates world over can now use Open Source in the form of Linux in all areas of Enterprise computing. Red Hat has launched a family of products for the enterprise called "Red Hat Enterprise Linux". Ans: Extremely good. Lots of organisations are using open source not only as high cost saving tools but also for better performance. Business users today have a choice and dont need to get locked into one vendor. 9) Why Linux took such a long time to capture market ? Ans: Linux initially did not have any organisation to take responsibily for the software. This was critical for business users. Red Hat helped solved that problem. Also taking on a well entrenched player in any market takes time. An ecosystem also needs to be created which doesnt happen overnight. eg: if u send a spreadsheet created in open office, that receiver needs to be able to read and react. This was not possible till a while back and in some cases even now because of blocking strategies of market leaders. 10) Why should anybody continue using proprietary software? Ans: You tell me! 11) What is your endeavour to spread Free Software/Open Source in schools? Ans: A considerable number of schools have begun to use Linux, both as a network server and internet gateway and router and as a desktop operating system. With the recent enormous growth of interest in Linux this usage is certain to accelerate. Red Hat offers a radical alternative to the way schools have traditionally used computers: an alternative which is attractive in terms of cost, stability, control and security. 12) How many people do you employ in India? Ans: About 30 people. 13) Any plans to make your product more affordable by Indian standards? Ans: Our products are affordable by Indian standards and we will constantly endeavour to offer it at the best possible price. 14) What steps are you taking to bring Linux to home desktops where pirated Windows OS is flourishing? Ans: We are launching desktop OS versions every six months with better applications. We will also launch Red Hat in Hindi down the line. 15) How do you think Microsoft is taking Linux ? Ans: Better answered by them, dont you think?. Linux and its army of developers is something even a company of the likes of Microsoft can hire. dear linuxers, i have a rather antiquated Twinhead Slimnote 712cv laptop with the following config Intel Pentium 120 Mhz 16Mb RAM 1.04Gb HDD Touchpad pointing device 2PCMCIA slots i want to install debian on this system and use it for some basic wordprocessing, mail and stuff like that.. i would also like to use X, maybe with a light window manager like fvwm or flvwm. i've read a document at http://www.angieandthor.de/thor/boxes/endeavour.htm. i want to know if the SLIP based install is feasable using a computer running winXP and apache. i really would like to get this thing working soon so if anybody out there has any ideas about how i can do this any more easily or faster please do tell. gautam. problem plz help

I had linux 9.0 installed and had partioned it automatically during installation. Now due to norton antivirus my mbr was corrupted and i thought by working in rescue mode and doing a 'dd' copy everything would work fine however during booting it directly went to windows without even prompting. By the fdisk of windows i came to know, that i still had the linux partitons but they were showing up as extended dos partitons. By some R&D i came to know that windows had enabled a large disk support by which my mbr was extended to 604 bytes and i think this is where the problem lied. However in rescue mode i came to know that actually my mbr was still 512 bytes. I think this is a bug in the linux rescue. Moreover the rescue mode told me that my windows was /dev/hda1 whereas actually windows fdisk told me it was /dev/hda2. Now neither rescue mode nor installation worked. So i deleted the extended partition and i thought reinstalling 9.0 would solve the problem. But during installation anaconda terminates abrubtly and flashes a error 'received signal 11' i tried to find out what this signal 11 is but to no use. Plz help i need to reinstall 9.0 as fast as possible. thank you Catch all the cricket action. Download Yahoo! Score tracker
