Given that one of the objectives of the list is to encourage newbies to use GNU/Linux, such a reply doesn't help. This has happened so many times, I think one should understand by now that it is a common misunderstanding people have about version numbers. Hitesh, please mention what distribution of GNU/Linux you are using i.e. Red Hat, Debian etc. Also it's a good practice to use a meaningful subject line (on this list it's necessary). KDE indianization

We are trying to indianize KDE. We have translatted po file (of kedit) but after making mo file and putting it in appropriate dir (/opt/kde3/share/locale/hi/LC_MESSAGES/kedit.mo ) and exporting lang variable when we started kedi we saw no change. When we started kedit again it showed square boxes for all entries(both translated and untranslates). When i copied german mo file in hindi dir then also it showed boxes. While when LANG=de it works fine in german. Anybody having any idea why so?? Most interesting is that after placing mo file and starting kedit first time we saw no change but second time onwards(even after deleting hindi mo file) when LANG=hi it shows only boxes. Anybody having any ides. Nilesh Bansal.

Hello Every1, I am having Red Hat 9.0 and have an internet connection from a cable internet provider. Actually its an ethernet and I have been given a static IP/netmask : 172.16.56.202/255.255.255.252 . I have also been given a gateway : 172.16.1.1 and a DNS server IP : 172.16.1.1 . I have configures device eth0 to have static IP address and default gateway is also configured. THe internet connection I ude first requires me to log on with a username and password by first going on the 172.16.1.1 website. I am able to browse the ethernet. Able to log on see my usage. But when I have to go somewhere on to the internet it gives me a message connection refused when attempting to connect to... when i ping those websites it says network unreachable. I tried to install squid but squid wont start it gives an error about some unknown name???? pls help me as thats the only reason preventing me to totally switch over to GNU/Linux from other operating systems. Hi guys I'm very new to linux so help. I'm not able to instll redhat 7.2 on my machine .its not probing monitor and video drive itself...so i selected the wright one in the list ....the ones which mandrake recognises and works fine.....still redhat after the whole process of installation on sending termination signals shows monitor and video drive not found ..and doesn't run on rebooting.. My machine is Amd....Asus (MB)...Nvidea (Chip set) ...Video d. Ge Force 2 I tried ELX which i got in linuxforu , it also gives the same problem. Knoppix 3.2 is giving a bit different probs....as soon as it starts booting from cd , it automaticaly switches on the power management and shows me 'Operating frequency out of range ' and switches off the monitor in 20secs. For the root passwd problem, here's my take: its renewed and encrypted each time u boot into knoppix. so you can't find it out. (anyone? :D) However they provide the mighty root console via the start>knoppix sub menu of kde. Oh and it gives direct root access. After all you are the only one. its the cleanest and official option. However mounting hdd partitions is a matter of click since knx identifies and lists them on desktop by default. No need be root for that. Then again the question of ejecting the knx cd while its running. No problems with that too as long as you don't try to start a new software after ejecting the cd. The kernel and quite a considerable amount is loaded into ram so it doesn't need the cd for that. Keep whatever software you want running and then eject. And to eject, first unmount the cd via root console then manually eject ! :D Actually i tried this as i only have a cd-writer and no cd-rom drv. so i kept xcdroast running, mounted my hdd partitions, ejected the cd. burned a new cd and popped the knx cd back again. smooth eh ? although there's a little problem when you remount. Problem with display driver

I tried to install Redhat 9.0 on my PC. I am having S3 Graphics Prosavage DDR for the display. It detected it as S3 Prosavage KM133 because Redhat 9.0 didnt detected my display driver. I can run Redhat 9.0 at 800x600 resolution , 256 color display. Some weired problem with Installation

Hello Everyone, I recently purchased a PC and installed knoppix 3.2 on it. But I ran in to a strange problem with it. <problemDescription> After installing GNU/Linux for the first time with xfs filesystem. suddenly after few days I recieved an error from INIT which said getty not found and got stuck at that. Suspecting a damaged file system I ran xfs_recover on the root partition. After recovery the OS worked fine for few days but only to run in to the same problem again. This time also I repaired the filesystem and OS worked fine. But the problem kept coming back. Hence after a while I reinstalled GNU/Linux with ReiserFS. With this the OS worked fine for another 15 days, but after 15 days it crashed bad this time it was saying INIT panick exception violation at (some hex address) waiting for 30 sec and I got the same message after every 30 second. suspecting a bad HDD I ran badblocks command on it to find and fix any badblocks present. But none were found. And recovery was also not feasible this time Hence now I have reinstalled GNU/Linux with ext3 filesyste. IT's working fine so far(I ve not passed that evil 15th day yet). Hope I won't run in to the same problem again. </problemDescription> I was told that there are some issues regarding xfs filesystem in knoppix hence I took the decision of reinstall for the first time. On both the occasions system was shutdown properly. And syslog did not report any abnormilities. Can any one shed some light on this. Thanks in Advance Shashank

Seems that SCO has given evidence to analysts at the Aberdeen Group; some 80 lines of it. But then here is one concern presented in the article: <i>If SCO (Lindon, Utah) prevails in its legal efforts, many observers believe the action could, at best, result in hundreds of multimillion-dollar licensing payments from Fortune 1000 companies and, at worst, damage the foundation of open-source software.</i> Well, I knew OSS was based on wrong principles--kind of a leg-in-leg, but this will certainly raise questions on the immunity of Free Software from such claims. By the looks of things, you may also want to use a rescue disc, and check your lilo for the correct root device, or other lilo options. Since its asking you to enter directly to shell, that looks like single-user mode. If you have upgraded the kernel, try booting back to the last working kernel, or the original kernel. If this fails as well, means you prolly have to check the lilo options. Its very unlikely for a filesystem to die off.

we have an application with front-end as VB6 on win98/nt/2k. reporting tool used is Crystal report 8.5. back-end can be rdbms connected thru odbc. aaa. we have replaced rdbms to win-Mysql under windows environment with minor modifications but crystal-report is not supporting mysql (under win2k environment) any help / guidance on report-generation tool on mysql under windows environment will be appreciated. bbb. next, we intent to migrate / convert the application on linux, mysql / postgresql with browser-front-end using perl/php. any help for conversion or trainging on commercial basis is appreciable. Reviving the PRC

hello friends Trevor, FN and I were thinking of reviving the very noble concept of the "Project Resource Center" which trevor n Dr. Nag started last year.The idea was that we have pros on the mailing lists who can very well mentor free s/w projects. we can have a place where students can come and choose projects and interact with their respectve mentors and maybe also have meetings with them on regulr intervals. This would help both the community as there will be more development and also the students coz they can find projects to work on. The idea is quite noble and it did help us a lot last year. This, I think would be a good time to start the PRC again bcoz in a short while, the BE students will start looking for projects to do as thier final year project and we can use this opportunity to put them onto free software projects.
