Dear Sameer, Saw your website ... it is quite good. But you have got some points terribly wrong. You have written that "Linux is an operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds" ... but that's absolute crap. The name Linux doesn't refer to the OS. It's the kernel & you might know, an OS is not complete without the different tools like compilers, editors etc. Those tools were taken from the GNU project & that's why we prefer to call the OS as GNU/Linux. There are other OSes from the GNU project with a different kernel like the GNU/Hurd. The GNU project & eventually the Free Software Foundation was founded by a God like man called Richard M. Stallman whom we lovingly refer to as RMS. It's very strange to note that you being a Linuxer & a Lugger don't know anything about RMS. HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU REFER TO THE FREE SOFTWARE FOUNDATION & GNU/LINUX WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT RMS ? It's really very shameful. In your website you have mentioned about the GPL & Copyleft. Have you ever wondered who devised all these wonderful concepts ? That's RMS. I really wonder whether you know anything about GNU/Linux at all 'cos you think Unix & GNU/Linux share the "same command set". This concept is totally wrong. Though GNU/Linux was conceived as a Unix clone, it has developed to be a much more sophisticated OS with MANY commands which are yet to be implemented on Unix. You are very lucky to have posted this query on an Indian LUG 'cos if it were a US or any western LUG, you would have been flamed & spammed like hell. Don't worry. Using the knoppix installer for a custom distribution

Hi Luggers :-)) I am thinking of building a custom distribution using the knoppix installer with just the limited number of debian packages that I need. I want to distribute it to college students. At present I am reading the documentation available on the knoppix site. I want to know if anybody has done this. If yes, then what are the issues involved with doing it? Also how much time would I require to get through it? I know I will get the answers to my questions when I go through the process. But its always better to ask somebody rather than re-invent the wheel ;-) Cheers !! How about an Ilug-bom IRC channel ?

Hi Luggers, I was wondering if we could have an ilug-bom IRC channel. After corresponding with The_Linuxer, who informed me that Pune LUG has their own channel called #Pluggies on Freenode(used to be called Openprojects), I thought it might be a good idea to have an IRC # for our very own ilug-bom. The_Linuxer has already registered the channel #ilug-bom on freenode. This channel might help because this way people can get instantaneous replies to their queries. Also this might help a lot of the organizers/hosts (for various events) correspond in real time. Also considering that many luggers now have access to the internet 24/7, I think this # will remain populated throughout. I know this sounds redundant and one might say that there are enough #s on IRC which do troubleshooting of problems. However, since we have a fairly large user base now, I think that it might help to have our own litte niche on IRC :). This is very complex and requires a thorough understanding of the RTAI kernel, device drivers, assembly, Plastics, motors, robotics etc. But i will try to xplain briefly. 1) load the rtai kernel (http://www.aero.polimi.it/~rtai/) 2) RTFM 3) Purchase three stepper motors, 12 bd139, 3 bd140 transistors, one max232, one 8051, assorted resistors and capacitors, one 12mhz crystal. 4) RT all the above FMs 5) Purchase one steel rod 30cm long, gears, plastic discs, rubber rings. Ask for the manuals. and RTFM. 6) rig up the parts in 3 to create a 3 axis stepper motor driver. 7) rig up parts in 5 to create a moving arm 8) connect rig of 6 with rig of 7. connect to serial port of pc. 9) write driver to operate resultant of eight 10) test and run. Voila u have a linux based automatic printer catridge changer. U may provide a gui interface to manually change the catridge and setup various options like change catridge , dont change catridge, operate with empty catridge etc. A Windows based design might be a very good idea as the users are a little hardware challenged. > > thanx 4 all the help! Sound (Via 8233A AC'97 Onboard) issues

Hello everybody, I'm using SuSE 8.0 Professional(courtesy "thelinuxer"/B.Ghose). It is giving me trouble with my onboard sound. I have a Via Chipset (8233A) MoBo with AC'97 onboard sound. Linux seems to have picked this up okay (8233_ac97) but there's no sound at all. A recent reinstall (for another purpose) found the system locking up on the KDE splash screen unless sound was disabled from the BIOS. The boot-up messages show it as detected and started okay. Would there be a difference between 8233 and 8233A sound drivers? I have the RedHat drivers with my MoBo CD. Please advise, D Burman. Configuring Sound and USB Printer for Debian

Hi, I have Debian 3.0 woody installed. Everything else is cool but I can't configure my soundcard. My SoundCard is Crystal Audio Codec (as detected in Windows 98) on an Intel 810. But I haven't yet found the right driver for Linux. I have tried variations by Crystal Semiconductors like Crystal SoundFusion and a couple of others but they don't work at all. Please help me with this. Also I need to know how to install a USB printer. I have a 2.4 Kernel and I DID install USB support (apparently the earlier versions don't support USB), but I don't know what to do next. Siddhesh.

mutt and q and width

Hi, I have made some changes to my .muttrc file and since then the key "q" copies a message in the same folder with its deleted bit set. That is if I have a message 1 in my inbox, when I press "q" then it copies the same messsage again in the same folder and marks it as deleted. I would like to have q to quit from mutt rather than copying and deleting the message. how do i use kppp with an external modem

i have borrowed an external d-link modem, which i've configured thru wvdial (thanx 4 answering my previous mail 2 help me do that) when i try 2 use kppp, it says "sorry, can't open modem" how do i configure the modem (d-link dfm 560-e (external)) in kppp. also i was able 2 configure my internal modem thru kppp in rhl 7.1 but every time i ran kppp, it asked me for the root passwd. i tried changing the access permissions of /usr/bin/kppp & also /usr/sbin/kppp to 777, but it did not make the problem go. b'coz of the need 2 provide the root passwd every time it is reqd 2 connect 2 the net, i can't have my younger brother access the net thru linux

Hey all, Just found this one around, quite an interesting read: This is an actual letter of resignation from an employee at Zantex Computers, USA, to his boss. His boss apparently resigned very soon afterwards! Dear Mr Baker, As an employee of an institution of higher education, I have a few very basic expectations. Chief among these is that my direct superiors have an intellect that ranges above the common ground squirrel. After your consistent and annoying harassment of my co-workers and myself during the commission of our duties, I can only surmise that you are one of the few true genetic wastes of our time. Asking me, a network administrator, to explain every little nuance of everything I do each time you happen to stroll into my office is not only a waste of time, but also a waste of precious oxygen. I was hired because I know how to network computer systems, and you were apparently hired to provide amusement to myself and other employees, who watch you vainly attempt to understand the concept of "cut and paste" for the hundredth time. You will never understand computers. Something as incredibly simple as binary still gives you too many options. You will also never understand why people hate you, but I am going to try and explain it to you, even though I am sure this will be just as effective as telling you what an IP is. Your shiny new iMac has more personality than you ever will. You walk around the building all day, shiftlessly looking for fault in others. I do believe that terms like "Lolita" are not usually viewed favourably by the administration. 3. When you borrowed the digital camera to "take pictures of your others b-day", you neglected to mention that you were going to take pictures of yourself in the mirror nude. Then you forgot to erase them like the techno-moron you really are. Suffice it to say I have never seen such odd acts with a ketchup bottle, but I assure you that those have been copied and kept in safe places pending the authoring of a glowing letter of recommendation. (Try to use a spell check please. I hate having to correct your mistakes.) Thank you for your time, and I expect the letter of recommendation on my desk by 8:00 am tomorrow.
