How to check whether ppp0 is active

Hi friends, When I connect to net through a modem, I can check whether ppp0 is active or not using ifconfig command so that it will list the status of ppp0. My problem is I had set a command in crontab as follows. lynx -dump www.lcnet.com/update.php (A module to update the web mysql database) Above script has to work and update only if ppp0 is active. How can I check whether ppp0 is active (A script has to check and then if the status is true, update.php module has to execute). Please suggest me how to go about. I had put six to seven commands in a batch file and the batch file name is given in crontab. I am using wvdialer to connect to net and it redials if connection disconnect. and if I specify the dialing command "wvdial redial" in the batchfile, then the subsequent command in the batch file are not executing. Hi, There is one adidas database in staroffice 6.0 & staroffice 5.2 which works like access database. U can try with that but i am also not sure whether it converts access files. rgds girish wanted help/info about how to run (access like software) under linux using star office. currently the aplication runs under win98/MS Access . Hello, I use a P4 based machine running SuSE Linux 8.0. I have a 20 GB Hard Disk & 256 MB RDRAM. At the time of installation, I reserved around 500 MB space for the /swap directory. As intended, it should share memory with the Linux Swap space. The problem is that, when I issue the top command, it shows that used swap space is zero & my Physical Memory is 70% used. I think it's pretty high since I don't use any software which is heavy on system requirments. I tried the swapon command but in vain. Even eding the /etc/fstab file didn't help. All there... Wishing you a happy new year!!! Porting of FPW apps to Linux There is an application which is running on Window and is created using foxpro for win 2.6. It also linked to and/or calling OLE applications. It also uses DDE to share data with other DDE compatible applications like Excel. Connecting muliple Terminals via serial lines to a server

Hello, I want to setup a Central Server in my School [suppose] & connect Terminals via serial lines so that every user can log into & use only one copy of the OS installed in the Central Server but I don't realy know how to implement it. Is there any online Documentation or HOW-TO Available ?? My second qwery is ... suppose there are multiple PCs conected through Ethernet on anything. If I want to see the display of the other PC, what is the way out ? I once saw Sameer do it in a workshop ... but I couldn't follow it. Thanx in advance ... [ILUG-BOM]Missing special device file /dev/fd0

Hello, Earlier, I mounted 3.5" floppies by just giving the command # mount /dev/fd0 /floppy Now suddenly, I don't know what happened, the bash shell says the device file is missing. As an alternative, what I did is that I changed the entry in /etc/fstab & named the floppy device file to /dev/fd0H1440. Now I mount floppies by using the command # mount /dev/fd0H1440 /floppy Although it works perfectly okay, I am still intrigued by what happened. Hello All Well I am sad to write this from a win98 machine bcaz of stupid command -> "dd if=111.bin of=/dev/hda2 bs=1440 count=1" from root on RH 7.1 Actually /dev/hda2 was where / got mounted everytime..but now this command has caused inode table to get corrupted on /dev/hda2 (may be bcaz i replaced usual bs=512 to bs=1440 and so its written to unwanted space cauing damage to i-node tables).. now i can't go beyond kernel panic screen on RH 7.1 So Can i get back my data in /dev/hda2 ???How? Where is the firewall?

Hi! installed privoxy ( junkbuster clone ) ad filter. However it cannot bind to the default 8118 port. It complains that the port may be in use and exits. When i run #nmap localhost there is no 8118 port open I guess the problem is with the firewall settings. Where are these settings located? Is it the problem of firewall or something else ? Please enlighten Nikhil

Flash on Mozilla

Hi, I have installed "Full (all packages)" Mandrake 9.0, I want to install flash player for any of the browsers - Mozilla, konquorer or galeon. I have given Mozilla a try with flash as follows. I did download and extract the files, and also copied into $HOME/.netscape/plugins and also added application/x-shockware-flash in the preferences->Navigator->Helper Application used swf (not .swf) as the extension. But mozilla doesnt even ask me if it can download the plugin for flash. Bye.

Greetings, How do I convert the file names to lower case. I have a directory and the files in it which are in upper case, how do i convert all of them to lower case. Ofcourse except "mv UPPERCASE lowercase" since there are lots of files to convert and I do not want to keep typing the lowercase file name for each one of them. Thanks in advance. Bye.

Hello, i have red hat linux 7.3 running at my place. i got gcc 2.96 installed by default on my system. while installing an application, it told me to upgrade gcc. so i installed gcc 3.2. it works fine. while installing my internal modem, it told me "gcc not found" so i did "locate gcc" in the process i found a lot many "*gcc2.96.*.so" files in the /usr/lib dir. i removed all of them then i did "cleanlinks" after that my x server is not starting. i tried installing gcc 3.2 again, but it did not help. plz help urgently, as i am not able 2 do my usual stuff, & have 2 use the crappy windoze instead. ne help wud b greately appreciated. -- Best regards, Pradnyesh mailto:pradnyesh@gmx.net

Squid & MTNL

Hi! I have both MTNL and VSNL nameservers in resolv.conf However when I connect using MTNL squid gives error that the nameserver refuses to perform specified action However if I disable proxy I can access the net. Also if I connect using VSNL I do not get this error using squid. Is this the problem of MTNL nameserver or squid? Nikhil
