As earlier you can browse the CD but now you can boot from it and Install a GNU/Linux system from it within 30 minutes. If there are no other systems required on the same harddisk, the process is fully automated. Otherwise you can make partitions manually and install. Those who have valuable data on disk cannot go for the first option On reboot you get a RedHat7.3 installation with OpenOffice, Compilers for different languages and other programs. A Terminal Server also is installed and configured, ie. It can support disk-less terminals if you have a network card. Floppy Boot files and ROM imaes for diskless PCs are also included with a lot of documentation. If anybody interested in tesitng it and give feedback, send me your postal address so that a CD can be send to you. Please forward to other related mailing lists. Motorola SM56 modem not detected and depmod error

hi, I am trying to set up modem to access Internet. I have dual boot system with Win98 and Reh Het 7.3 (2.4.18-3) modem works OK when connecting to Internet using Win98 dial up networking tools. This is my modem details Its SM56 PCI I Motorola Speakephone modem. I thought ppp support was provided by default by RH7.3 kernel However after have tried to manually load sm56 [root@localhost root]# modprobe sm56 $lsmod and $cat /proc/modules always have sm56 1557324 (initializing) Never stops initializing! My /etc/wvdial.conf looks like this [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/ttyS1 Baud = 57600 SetVolume = 4 Dial Command = ATDT Init1 = ATZ Init2 = AT&F&D2&C1V1S0=0E0 Init3 = ATS7=60\T0M1\N7%C1\Q3*LS1X4 Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden FlowControl = XONXOFF [Dialer connect] Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden Stupid Mode = 0 I tried other ports as well...... /dev/sm56 as one artical on web by Marvin Stodolsky suggests amd /dev/modem.Windows detected modem on COMM3 which would be /dev/ttyS2 in Linux but I haven't tried this yet. But there is this article which says it should't matter which internal port is being used by Windows for modem. I have been searching using google for almost 2 weeks, had subscribed to close to dozen mailing lists, sent close to dozen mails but still no progress. I have researched problem well (ref. e-mail addreses I know of people who had posted to some mailing lists regarding this problem) . I haven't considered option to throw away my modem yet! Any help would be very much appreciated. But when it came to picking a computer system this year, the company was more concerned with saving money. Zumiez had been using the Unix operating system to power its cash registers, but the cost about $1,000 at each of its 100 locations was more than what the company wanted to pay. In lieu of Microsoft, which makes the industry's dominant operating system, the store's technicians turned to Linux, which was free. They installed the system by themselves and added internal e-mail, Web access and spreadsheets which they didn't have before. "It was a good cost savings," said Zumiez technology director Lee Hudson. "The stores have a lot more tools than they thought they would." While Microsoft offers many of the same tools, Zumiez runs a simple network and wouldn't use all of Windows' features, said Hudson. "We just don't need the expense of a Microsoft system," he said. The computing industry might look back on 2002 as the year people got serious about Linux. The operating system has been gaining momentum as an alternative to Microsoft and proprietary versions of Unix, and 2002 was a breakout year for the technology. Linux hasn't quite reached mainstream status in business computing, but it's coming close. And it has become a major competitor to Microsoft. The reason? Linux's underlying source code the guts of the system is available for free. Developers can download it, tinker with it and customize it for a company's needs. And in a year when words like "monopoly" and "copyright" dominated much of the technology industry, "free" drew a lot of attention. No one owns Linux, although a growing number of companies are trying to make money by helping people integrate it and by selling compatible software. The technology sprung from and now leads the movement toward freely-shared, open-source software. Microsoft welcomed Linux the way some people welcomed disco mocking it, berating it and gradually accepting that it could be here for a while. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer likened open-source software to cancer last year, but the company has since toned down its stance. These days, Microsoft is aggressively insistent that Windows costs less than Linux for the total package including tech support and other factors. We offer a few other signs that 2002 was Linux's breakout year: Moving into retail Big-name retailers and automakers adopted Linux on computer systems, in most cases replacing Unix. Movie-theater operator Regal Entertainment Group rolled out a Linux system at its concessions stands in September and is testing a Linux-based kiosk for ticket purchases. Sherwin-Williams, the paint dealer, launched Linux in May throughout its 2,500 stores in North America. Chrysler and other automakers turned to Linux computers to analyze crash simulations. Building momentum were stories from companies like Amazon.com, which said third-quarter 2001 technology costs dropped 24 percent to $54 million compared with the year before. The company attributed part of the savings to switching to Linux. Linux hits PCs It's hard to find many Linux-based personal computers at stores like Circuit City; the PC landscape belongs to Microsoft Windows, with fewer than 10 percent of users favoring such alternatives as Macintosh. But this year, Linux-based PCs from such companies as Lindows.com went on sale for as low as $199 at Walmart.com, the Web site for the discount retail giant. (That price doesn't include a monitor or modem.) Linux advocate Blake Couch, who surveys computer users about Linux on his Web site, www.wewantlinux.org, called it a watershed moment. "You get name recognition and visibility when people like IBM, Hewlett-Packard and even Sun are seen to be backing Linux," he said. "But now we're talking small-town, mom-and-pop kind of stuff when you're talking about Wal-Mart." Microsoft is watching Amid the movement, Linux has become a huge discussion topic at Microsoft, according to analysts with Seattle investment firm McAdams Wright Ragen, who visited Microsoft executives recently. "Linux was described as a huge threat, and as something that every senior executive thinks about every day," according to a Dec. 11 report by analyst L. Alan Davis. Add to that observations by Rick Belluzzo, who resigned in April as Microsoft's president and chief operating officer. In an interview with trade magazine Computerworld, Belluzzo hinted that a common reaction to the subject of Linux within Microsoft was to "jump up and scream." "Linux is clearly the biggest competitive challenge that Microsoft has ever faced," Belluzzo said in the interview. "It's unlike anything before there's not a company behind it. It's very elusive, in a way." Publicly, Microsoft has toned down its rhetoric toward Linux. The company even attended this year's LinuxWorld trade show. Peter Houston, Microsoft's chief server strategist, said the company had previously taken an "emotional" view of Linux. "I don't think customers really want us to come out and talk about what's wrong with Linux," he said. "They want to talk about how Windows solves their problems." To be sure, Microsoft has gone from bashing its competitor to portraying itself as ultimately less expensive on a "total cost of ownership" basis. The idea: It's cheaper to maintain and fix a car that most mechanics know about, such as a Toyota, than one few people drive. In a report commissioned this year by Microsoft, the research firm IDC found that Windows costs up to 22 percent less than Linux over a five-year period. Most of the cost differences were due to staffing, the report said, because more work is required to support Linux systems. IBM sees returns Companies such as HP and Sun continued to integrate Linux into software and other products this year. Wednesday, rivals Matsushita and Sony announced a partnership to develop Linux for digital home devices, such as televisions. IBM has made huge investments in Linux, with 250 of its developers working full time on the operating system. The company committed $1 billion last year to the technology, and the strategy seems to be paying off. The company's Linux sales hit $216 million in the third quarter, up 83 percent from the same period the year before and 31 percent from the previous quarter, according to research firm Gartner. IBM is so entrenched in Linux that it could dictate the operating system's future in ways likely to suit its own needs, said Houston at Microsoft. "In a very real sense, IBM is the face of Linux," he said. Meantime, it seemed that nearly everyone who rode Linux's coattails in the server market saw returns. Linux revenue grew to $548 million in the third quarter, up 65 percent from the year before, according to Gartner. That trend has caused other companies, such as graphics chipmaker Nvidia, to broaden its line of Linux-compatible products. "One of the main reasons that a lot of people move to Linux is they want to save money," said Nvidia software product manager Andrew Fear. Cutting into Unix Linux seems to be taking more business from the Unix market than from Microsoft, analysts say. "I'm not sure that there's a direct fight between Linux and Microsoft yet," said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft. The key word is yet. Aberdeen Group analyst Bill Claybrook expects Linux to leapfrog Windows and replace Unix on commercial operating systems within seven or eight years. "Linux is so appealing because it isn't owned by anybody," he said. "You don't have to deal with a monster like Microsoft. You don't have to hassle with a company over contracts and licensing." [OT] Latex... should I use it?

Hi! I recently submitted my proj synopsis, over which the examiner was not at all impressed (spacing,indentation,et al...) We had done the thing in Microsoft Word format ( I used Star Office while my colleagues Microsoft Office ) I researched a little and found out that groff and Latex are great doc formatting (typesetting ?) tools. Also I discovered that mostly Latex is preferred over groff. Now I've learnt Latex a little. However the pdf file I create (with the help of dvips and ps2pdf) looks very crappy in acrobat reader. Ghostview however displays the thing quite well. Is this normal? Has anyone tried Latex and stuff ? Most probably we would print the project on a Windows machine ( i guess very few DTP vendors have Linux as of yet :( ). One of my friends told me that pdf files do not print quite well as compared with Microsoft Word files. Is this correct? I'm in a fix. I'm beginning to like Latex. But at the same time I would not like to face problems with the printing and stuff. Has anyone made his/her synopsis/report/article in Latex ? Is there any other good doc formatting system? Please guide Thx Nikhil

Linux Lunacy at Arnala

"Are you sure about the place and the timing?", I asked Sachin - the only presence from the LUG that I was aware of till then. " As far as I remember it *was* Borivili Station, 7:00 am , Platform no. 6 .... under the indicator." "Yeah! Platform no 6 , under the indicator", comes a voice from behind us. "Hi, I am Mr. Ram Rao ...." Trevor joins in a while later, and then the gang eventually assembles. We left at around 8:00am from Borivili Station for Arnala. But 'lunacy' had already begun for all there. No one seemed to notice that things had been delayed because people were already talking computers ... after the initial 'Hi's and 'Hello's. We got to the resort talking about open source as a business strategy, AMD vs. Intel, 'tangibility in the new world' and what not. At the resort, we hogged at the breakfast table. Absence of females at the resort made us wonder if entry was restricted only to Linux users ;-). Some soft music was being played and the pool looked inviting ... so we obliged our senses ... Ouch, the water was chilling and neither was the sun as hot as yet ... but soon we got playing handball in the pool and the chill didn't quite bother us anymore. Gurpreet, Kunal , Warren had arrived by then. After a few beers, people got back in the pool for some more handball. By noon we'd had enough of it, so we got out and began waiting for lunch to be served. A discussion on the history of commercial computers ensued with Mr. Rao talking about how computers long back,before the IBM PC would boot into BASIC. There was discussion on the invention of GUI and its commercial adoption first by Apple and then by Microsoft. This was followed by some discussion on the current hardware scenario, cheap laptops, expensive server tecnologies. Trevor talked about Media Labs and some of the research work going on there... on low cost technologies. Lunch was taken at half past one and by that time all of us were hungry enough not to talk about computers until some pet puja. Prakash Advani of freeos.com, then talked about the inside experience at his venture, what gave him the idea, how he got funded and his thoughts on content publishing dotcoms as of now. That was followed by discussion on free software business models. Almost everybody was of the opinion that intellectual property had to be recognised. Ideas for revenue generation under such models were put in. Mr. Rao discussed in particular about his enterprise Bajirao Technologies which is into (proprietary) Linux based solutions for medical institutions of all sizes. We left for a walk by the beach at around 3:30, after which we left for Virar. However lunacy wasn't quite over. In the train on the way back, there was that never ending war: 'emacs vs. vi' I and Warren Noronha happened to be the only emacs users around. So it was 2 against 12, but still vociferous enough, countering each of the stupid anti-emacs arguments ... after all, emacs *is* the best editor ;-). So that's what Linux Lunacy was like. We need to print documents in draft mode on DMPs and D Inkjet printers from Openoffice. Is thre any method of doing that ? Maybe if some simple font was available this could be done !!! - Mohan Krishnan

Emulex fiber channel adapter on Linux

Hi, We have SAN here, with a Compaq TL890 tape library, an HSG80 storage array, one GS160 configured as two hosts and a normal ML350 ... all connected to a SAN switch through Emulex fiber channel adapters. For testing, we connected the tape library (TL890 directly to the ML350). It has 10 tape slots and two drives with a robotic arm ... the ML350 has an Emulex fiber channel adapter, that is supposed to show all SAN boxes as SCSI devices. But problem is, /proc/scsi/scsi shows only the robotic arm, and not the tape drives ... we tried compiling all the scsi modules into the kernel, but still no effect. Earlier, when the server was on the SAN, it could not see the storage array or other hosts either. It only shows the first LUN it founds. So we tried tweaking MAX_LUNS, but that doesn't help either! Has anybody tried doing something like this before? Please help! problem with printer resolution

Hello, i have the foll doubts regarding my printer. i hope u all will be kind enough to answer them 1. i have an epson 480 color stylus printer, which has support in rhl 7.3. the docs (/usr/share/doc/ghostscript-6.52/Devices.htm) specifies that my printer can give the foll resolutions: Xdpi=180,360,720 & Ydpi=90,180,360,720. but i don't know how 2 use these resolutions. plz tell me some place where i can learn about the "gs" command mentioned in the above mentioned doc. also i didn't understand the "YourFile.ps" part. can somebody plz hlp me out? THANX! 1. how can i see the status of the ink remaining in my cartridges? also how do i replace the cartridge when it is empty? 1. when i tried taking some print-outs using gimp, i got them in the default res. if the image is color then the print-out gets messed up, whereas if i specify a b&w print-out, then the image is printed using both color & b&w inks. how do i specify if i want 2 use only b&w ink? Hi, How do I setup bind to give all the IP address for all subdomains as a.b.c.d? I mean if myhost.com has an IP of 20.20.20.20, then how can I configure DNS server on myhost.com so that ns1.myhost.com,mail.myhost.com, and anything.myhost.com points to 20.20.20.20. I do not want to create a seperate entry for all of them I was a single line that will make everything.myhost.com point to 20.20.20.20. Thanks in advance. Bye.

Linux Lunacy ... 5:45am too early

Hey Guys, I stay in New Mumbai, Nerul. The first train around here is around 5:00 am .... So there's no way I can get there .. Andheri or Borivali by 5:45am. Is there any one else coming over from this side of town?? And yeah!, do we have a mechanism to ensure that no one interested in coming is being left behind before leaving from Andheri or Borivali? Hello, I wrote a mail 2 days back asking about how qmail was relaying mails when my test for relaying was negative. I found the problem My QMail installation is accecpting all mails for the domains I am hosting. But it does not check if the user exists on my system. For example, amishmunshi(a)myhost.com doesnot exist. But myhost.com is present in rcpthosts, locals and virtualhosts, so it is accecpting the mail, but then when it realizes that amishmunshi is not a local user and there is no alias for it, then it tries to bounce the mail, not when spammers send mails, their mail address does not exist, so the bounced mails bounce back. I want to configure qmail to accecpt mail only if the user exist. Thanks in advance. Bye.

problem in segregating forwarded mails.

I am having the following Scenario at our end and have a problem with our COBALT QUBE 3 fetchmail server which runs Cobalt Linux 6.2, kernel 2.2.16-7. We have a mail server hosted at a Service Provider with domain name "mydomain.com". All employees have e-mail adresses like xyz(a)mydomain.com. We have asked our e-Mail service provider to create another sub-domain mail account called "bom.mydomain.com" whose mailbox is accessed with the account "penguin(a)bom.mydomain.com. For all our Bombay employees , I've created accounts on the Cobalt having same id as in the mydomain.com domain. we want to use our Local Cobalt Server as Mail server for Sending and receiving mails. So we have asked our Service Provider to have all the mails forwarded from their mydomain.com account to the new sub-domain account "bom.mydomain.com" which is then downloaded by our COBALT QUBE 3 fetchmail server having the same domain name "bom.mydomain.com". Now, the problem we are facing is that although the mails at users inboxes at "mydomain.com" are being forwarded to the new sub-domain mail account, all mails are falling into the admin mailbox and not into the respective locally created folders. eg: mails addressed to test(a)mydomain.com are being forwarded to test(a)bom.mydomain.com but the mails are falling into the default penguin user's inbox which I can see in the admin's inbox. I want the forwarded mail messages to fall into the users respective inbox. How can I make the cobalt do this? Please note however that mails addressed to test(a)bom.mydomain.com or any other user does fall correctly to the "test" users mailbox when sent from any domain directly. It is only the mails forwarded from the domain.com mail domain that are causing the problem. rgds, abbas

Change password from a script
