Press Release from Free Software Foundation of India Free Software Foundation of India --------------------------------- Press release: Friday, November 15, 2002 The Free Software Foundation of India would like to bring to the attention of the Government and the general public the negative implications of the "investment pledges" made by the Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, during his present visit to India. At the outset, it needs to be made very clear that the proposed investments have no motive other than the motive of profit and nobody should be under the illusion that these "investments" are being made for the betterment of society or for the development of India. On the contrary, the type of software developed and sold by Microsoft, proprietary software, -- software which is supplied without its underlying source code and without the freedoms to study, modify and redistribute it -- constrains indigenous development and divides society. Of particular concern is the Microsoft Chairman's pledge of money to `Project Shiksha' aimed at educating 35 lakh children, tied to the condition that the Project will purchase and use licensed Microsoft software! Mr. Gates magnanimously declared that "In education, we have very low pricing. For big education projects, we will have larger donations so that the cost of software is lower." However, this is not a question of initial software cost. Microsoft would benefit tremendously from such a project even if it were to supply its software free of cost as long as it is Microsoft software. That is because the children and teachers would learn (or shall we say "indoctrinated") to use only Microsoft software, allowing the company to maintain its monopolistic stranglehold in education and beyond. This is akin to an MBBS course teaching potential doctors how to use medicines manufactured only by one particular pharmaceutical company! To quote Richard Stallman, President of the Free Software Foundation: "This `gift' is no act of generosity. Giving Microsoft software to school children is like giving them cigarettes: it is a way to get them hooked, so that once they grow up they will be a captive market for Microsoft." Thus, Microsoft is not "investing" in Indian Education but in its own future captive market. Besides the obvious issue of monopoly, there is another far more fundamental concern, that of software freedom. As pointed out earlier, Microsoft software is proprietary -- it is supplied without its underlying source code under a restrictive license which denies its users the freedoms to study, modify and redistribute the software. Which means that the students and teachers of `Project Shiksha' will not have the means or the right to study how the software works or to change it -- studying and changing the software one uses is one of the best ways to learn programming. If they find problems with the software, they will not have the means or the right to make required corrections, either by themselves or by engaging a third party. They will have to depend solely on Microsoft to provide such corrections. They will be denied the right to share the software with others outside the purview of the project premises, leading young and impressionable minds to believe that sharing is wrong! The People and the Government of India should reject outright any grant or "investment" which is tied to such restrictive conditions whose sole aim is to perpetuate a monopoly and make a nation's software infrastructure so hopelessly dependent on one corporation. The Government should set up an expert committee to look into the above implications and seriously consider formulating an IT and education policy based on Free/Swatantra Software. Swatantra Software gives the users all the rights and freedoms denied by proprietary software. It enables and encourages collaborative development independent of any corporate entity thereby guaranteeing the freedom and independence of its users. It facilitates devising local solutions to local problems independently of the software's supplier. It gives the users the means and right to study how the software works and, as software educationists know, the best way to learn to write good software is by studying other peoples' work. It allows the software to be shared, both "as is" as well as in modified forms, in keeping with the ethical tradition of the free flow of knowledge. An example of Free/Swatantra Software is the GNU/Linux operating system which is in widespread use especially in the enterprise, in government departments and in academic institutions around the world. The development of the GNU system started in 1984, and the GNU/Linux operating system has been in use since 1992. The country-wide SchoolNet program of Namibia, for instance, uses GNU/Linux. Other countries like Peru are in the process of mandating or legislating the use of free software such as GNU/Linux to ensure their independence. Linux vs Windows as my selection.

Hi, These are the practical reason why I have selected Linux as my OS. Windows : The only plus being is that it is easier to use. (no one will deny that) More support for games (But with a bad graphics card that I have, I hardly play any games on windows as well). Linux : No Viruses. Technically correct. Non - microsoft product (so it is out of dirt cheap politics) More flexible. I hold a prestigious place in my friend circle when I say that I know linux, since everyone knows that it is not that widely used so I got to be different. No formatting whenever you are in problems. You can pinpoint the problem and solve it without formatting and starting a fresh (This is actually the same as flexibility). More efficient code which improves my networking and hardware life. Last but not the least Power (You can smell the power of your computer, sweating and making noise when you are on linux) Selection is all yours. Hi, Jaju and I talked to Dr. Phatak some time ago, about our plans for the expo, PRC, regular workhshops etc. He has promised complete support from KReSIT towards the event. He also mentioned a new "Affordable Computing Lab" that will be started at KReSIT in a couple of months ... August or later seems like a good date, December or May is ideal for IIT. Those are the only two months when accomodation could be available ... hi all this is bout the dates of linux bombay 2003 although end feb or early march was perfect as far as students r concerned but i'll just summarize the dates that'll suite studentz in maharashtra. *feb/ march early - perfect coz itz thhe starting of the sem n ervery1 is kinda free * march is gud but dont get too deep in march * april wud be not so gud, a few enthu onez might come but most will back up coz of pracs * may n june can be ruled out for students * july wud be gr8 but i dunno bout the rainz * august is rainy too, but we have a plus bout the independence day * sept and later wud be tooo late ( i cant wait that long lol) CONCLUSION- feb or march wud be the best for students ( i dunno bout professionals) decide asap fellas gurpreet

Summary of discussions on the Bom-Linux Expo!

All this discussion was getting too difficult to follow. So I thought that a summary of the ideas till date would be nice! We could take pointers from other Linux Conferences like Banglore Linux 2002 (http://linux-bangalore.org) and LinuxWorld (www.linuxworld.de) Suggested dates (Timing) 1. End-Feb to Beginning - March: This may however not be suitable because an international level meet is being organized in Kerala by the govt with support from FSF-india. 2. end march to early may is not suitable as most corporates will be busy with accountsand year ending. Plus college / university exams are held around april / may. 3. July seems a better time....year-end is over, collegesabout to open, so students return to town, and generally considered dull period. 4. August: An idea to Couple it with Independence day celebrations has been suggested. Suggested Places Two places have been suggested so far: 1. IIT Campus, however someone suggested that a Conference held at IIT would be considered too technical to be of interested to the common users. 2. Nehru Science Centre 3. I would like to suggest that the place be as close to the centre of town as possible if we are expecting a large corporate turnout. The Bandra-Reclamation ground could be another option. Aim...to have the following core interests at heart. --> Conferences / Workshops/ Tech Presentations/ Competitions for Geeks/Programmers alike. --> Expo for commercial companies to demo/display their s/w and h/w products based based on FSF/OS tools. --> Get the Government to notice FSF/OS options. Invite dignitaries/Beureaucrats to be part of some key sessions involving FSF/OS implementations/pilots for the govt. --> Get major colleges and high schools as well as IIT to participate as they would provide a large audience. --> Get LUGs from other places to participate. Also find cheap accomodation for participants from outside Mumbai. Suggested places include YMCA and IIT hostels. --> Some fun events (Geeks vs. Nerds quiz? Geek of the yr. award?) Give away books on OSS by raffle / hourly quizzes. Oreilly/Wrox etc will be interested. --> A Professional Event Management firm could be used to handle the details. The acceptance of theis idea would ofcourse be based on the available money aand the numberr of volunteers we have. The cost of hiring one will be posted by Saswata some time soon. The main benefits of hiring an event maagement company would include the following as sugested by Saswata: The advantage would be that there is a strong business support backup. Things like sending out mailers, accepting registrations, collecting cheques and banking them, keeping track of budgets, making sure there are adequate trained personnel at the venue (pretty young girls for registrations, giving out the agenda, cds etc. -- every event has them), coording with the venue owners for seating, arrangements, lighting, OHPs, etc. If we dont have an event managemnt company doing the above, then we should have enough infrastructure and support system to do that type of work. I think you are talking of workshops and seminars where a large number of people would come over. (Mind you, I am not saying that volunteers from ILUG cannot do it, what I am saying is that there are hundreds of boring jobs which are to be done and these companies do it all the time, so for them it is child's play) --> We have to approach sponsors for the event. Also companies with commercial interest in mind (displaying their products) will be charged. Names like IBM, all time favourite RedHat, oracle have been suggested. --> What I'd really like to see is for the Expo to provide a recruitment office (??) for people who are intrested in contributing to the community in any way. Although the response may be half-hearted or flame out after a while, I think what really needs to be driven in the public consciousness is the fact that *YOU* can contribute. I mean, most people view Free/OSS software as just something to use, written by some ultra-smart geeks you have no hope of matching. A lot of help can be used, especially in non-programming tasks like indian-language localization, distribution, general help, etc. I suspect that there also might be programmers who are searching for a idea/project to contribute to (I know I am) so we could provide some sort of exchange for that... considering the variety of people planning to attend, it could be really useful :-) ( As contributed by Ashish Kulkarni) There are a few points to be taken care of: 1. The PRC site should be up and running. This would allow us to showcase the best projects. 2. The workshops should get underway. 3. Target audiences and speakers as well as topics have to be taken care of. 4. No. Yahoo has its chat server open on many ports(so that it works through most of firewalls). And I have noticed many times that windows client, if it fails for some reason to connect on 5050 port, it tries ftp, telnet, even http ports. it must be some temporary problem on port 5050 that too on server you might be trying to connect. Let's take the billionaire's healthcare handouts, and turn down the software handcuffs. By the time this article comes out, the world's richest man would have been here and gone. From what I hear around me, our state governments are in a tizzy, competing to outdo each other to dazzle the gent. All in a hope to get some of his cash into their state. Nothing wrong with any of this. But let's look a little closer at why the Chief Software Architect is taking 4 days out of that hyper-valuable time to hobnob with our CMs and CEOs. He's not really here because we need his money. He's here because he needs ours. Think about it - Microsoft has seen off legal challenges to its Windows monopoly. But never before has it seen such a strong marketplace challenge - in the form of the open source operating system called Linux. Linux is all the things a developing economy like India needs - open, well-documented, stable, secure, accepted worldwide - and, best of all, virtually free. Governments around the world, from Peru to the United Kingdom have begun insisting on open source to power their national initiatives. India is not far behind - Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were among the first to direct atleast some of their IT buyers to first look at open source for solutions, and only later, at proprietary systems like Microsoft before placing orders. This worries the famously paranoid Redmonders. Small wonder that the CMs of these very states are on Bill's list of people to schmooze on this trip. "Hey buddy, I'll come and throw a few scraps your way from my private jet - but, pal, you gotta buy Microsoft." Governments and their directives are not Bill's only worries. India isn't that large a market for software - we barely account for 1% of Microsoft's sales. But the fact is that we are home to 10% of the world's software developers - and Billy boy just doesn't want Coder Coomaraswamy to go over to the Linux side of the development fence. Corporations around the world want lower cost, more supportable and stable solutions. And the nightmare of India becoming one of the world's strong Linux-based development centers has ensured that our Ambanis, Tatas and Narayanamurthy's get treatment on par with our Chief Ministers. The message again: "Stay with Microsoft and we can beat off those Open-source Outlaws and bring the world back to a place where a monopolist can still make a decent living." The trip is done and over with now - and hopefully some of the glamour and space-cadet glow would have faded from those who wanted to be photographed with His Billness. Time for a reality check. For buyers, it's time to consider how the very nature of software is changing. From a point where the internet offered the ultimate open, extensible infrastructure we now have offerings like Microsoft's Palladium which, in the supposed name of security, takes the free, open nature of TCP/IP: the platform under the internet, and adds proprietary bits that will ensure that Microsoft controls and gets paid virtually every time you go out of the gate onto the net. You will also see new Microsoft licensing models that force you to pay subscriptions from now till forever for whatever you use. You don't have to accept it if you don't want to. There are alternatives. Further, you will hear standard Microsoft FUD, as they call it themselves (rumours that add to Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) that Linux is more expensive than Windows to implement. This is Redmond's new global anti-Linux positioning - once they realized their earlier "Linux is un-American and un-capitalistic" line actually ended up making it more popular. Don't take anybody's word for it. Do your own study, arrive at your own conclusions. More FUD is expected that Linux is insecure - but this coming from notoriously bug-infested Microsoft is like Saddam suddenly evangelizing humane democracy. If you're a developer, keep an equally open mind. There are advantages to being part of the Microsoft camp, especially if you want framed photographs you can show your grandchildren - or your customers live under a rock and will buy MS, no questions asked. For others, there is a global market for Linux-based solutions that is rapidly developing. You will have to re-adjust your thinking. And as far as the Bill and Melinda Foundation to eradicate AIDS? A wonderful effort by all means. The NGOs among you should strive to seek connections and funding.
