Hi Mitul, Thanks for prompt reply. I am aware of "linc". I have tried it also and able to connect to my ISP. But, my problem is, my ISP has configured the server software so that I can login from only one OS. E.g. if I login from WIN2000 for first time, I will have to use WIN2k for accessing the Net. I will not be able to login from Linux or even WIN98 afterwards. It says "You are not allowed to login from this machine". I actually wonder how the server software is identifying that I am trying to login from different OS. The hardware (i.e. Machine) is the same. It is just the case of multibooting system. I have checked that the port used by the client software on WIN98 and Win2k is different. Is it the cause of problem? Hi Mitul, I have a single Network card and it's my home machine. Single machine, single NIC, multiboot (WIN2K, WIN98 and Linux) system. I have checked MAC addresses using sniffers. In both cases WIN2K & WIN98, they are same. The difference is in the lenght of Login message (raw bytes) sent to the server. Also the ports used by 24 Online client on 2 OSs are different. Hi All, As usual the meeting formally started late @ 5:00 pm though the announced time was 4:30. In fact an informal meet was going on in the HBCSE canteen, and we have call the people from there to start the meet formally. :-) We started the meeting with introductions as there where many new faces, who were attending the meeting for first time. There were 29! members present in the meeting. :-) Sundeep gave a very insight full talk on various Free and Open Source Licenses in use by various developers and what does it mean to an average user and a possible developers. He covered following 4 prominent licenses widely used by developers. 1. X, BSD and Apache License. 2. GPL (General Public License) 3. Artistic License (Perl?) 4. MPL (Mozilla Public License. We also learned that, the most common aspect all licenses are that, software covered by them comes without any explicit or implied warranty. Also only GPL and MPL are written by either Law Professors or Lawyers and only they have any chance of standing in Court of Law. However, so far this has not happened. During Sandeep's presentation it became very clear that only GPL protects developers and users *rights* and *freedom* absolutely. That is why some times GPL is referred to as copyleft. Also during the discussion, Philip told us how a guy has written a proprietary instant messaging application using the library (libyahoo2) developed by him and how he circumvent the GPL. Then many people very curious to know the reaction and feeling of Philip. :-) In all, it was a wonderful presentation by Sandeep, where he covered most of the aspects of Free and Open Source licenses. Thanks Sundeep on behalf of LUG for such a nice presentation. We took a tea break @ 6:00 and as alway, very generous Dr. Nagarjun sponsored the tea for the attendee. (I strongly feel that we should do something is this regard. How about voluntary contribution or may be a nominal set fee for attending the meets say in the range of Rs. 10.00 to Rs. 50.00? This is just an idea, all suggestions are welcome, all flames >/dev/null :-)) We assemble again at 6:30 and Dr. Nagarjun talked about PRC (Project Resource Center) for students and various other activities for proposed Developers Network. The idea was to get more projects and invite more mentors for the PRC. We also found many volunteers for various task that needs to be done. Harsh Busa and Kapil will redesign and maintain web site. Amish Munshi and Ritesh Kale will co-ordinate LUG meets. Dr. Nagarjun and I will look after the server. It is decided that now LUG meets will be regularly done every second Sunday of the month. (Amish / Ritesh start inviting speaker and finalize the topic(s) for the next meet :-)) Also Dr. Nagarjun has generously offered the venue for all future meets. But we should also find other venues in various locations so more people for various other areas can also participate. In all, it was a nice meet almost after an year!!! 24Online Client for Linux and Multiboot systems

Hello Luggers, I have recently subscribed to an ISP that provides Internet access over LAN. The ISP uses a software (24Online from elitecore) to validate users and track the usage for billing. I have 3 OSs viz, Win98,Win2000 and Linux. The ISP's client software does not have Linux version. Also once I connect through WIN98/Win2k I can't connect from the other OS. The server software doesn't allow me to login. Error message says "you are not allowed to login from this machine. I have checked the raw data sent by the client (from 2 OSs) to the server using sniffer programs and found them to be different. can anybody tell me how should I fix this? The 24online server identifies your machine with 3 things : IP, MAC-ADDR & and authentication string based on your password. For linux. I had to do a tiny hack to the linc code. It was about the length of one of the message fields. After recompilaton it worked fine. The instruction which come with linc are important.

hi luggers i have created 2 partitions on a 20 gb samsung drive c: & D:,i have installed win2000server on D: drive and after that i deleted c: and installed Redhat linux 7.2 on it.I have properly mentioned the information on lilo boot loader about both the os.I have set Win2000 as default os to load,but after the installation of linux and reboot the machine shows menu of os to be loaded and when i select win2000 it goes to dos,but when i select linux it works fine.I cant load win2000 server now,please help me i need urgent help. Prince, First of all, basing your judgement on Red Hat alone is not a very bright idea. You should try other user friendly distributions like Xandros, Mandrake, Lycoris etc etc, before feeling disappointed about the desktop/multimedia capacities of Linux. I am using Slackware Linux 8.1, after experimenting with RedHat, Mandrake, Suse and Debian, for almost all my desktop needs. The following is a list of windows programs *i* would consider important for a desktop user and their availibility in Linux. Programs Windows Linux --------------------------------------------------------------- Web Browser IE,Netscape Mozilla,Netscape E-mail, PIM Outlook, OE Evolution, Kmail MP3 Player Winamp XMMS Media Player Windows Media Player mplayer, xine Productivity MS Office Open Office, Star Office. P2P File Sharing Kazaa, Morpheus LimeWire Image Editing Photoshop Gimp Instant Messaging MSN, Yahoo, ICQ GAIM(MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc) IRC mIRC X-Chat, KVIRC etc. [I am not bothering to include editors because, besides the fact that there a plethora of them available for Linux, i have seen that most windows users prefer using word processors like MS Word, even for editing purposes. Also, luggerz, please dont feel bad if ur favorite browser, etc is not included above. This is more or less what i feel that a desktop susbtitute for windows should need.] *All* the above mentioned substitutes for windows applications available in Linux, IMO, out perform their Windows counterpart in terms of stability and security(where applicable). As you can see, all the commonly reqd windows desktop applications have Linux substitues. The most important factor however, is the ease of use which is where, most people *think* windows is better than Linux. However, beg to defer. IMHO, all the applications listed on the linux side above are as easy to use as their Windows substitute, with the exception of the GIMP. This program, although very powerful, does not present an intuitive interface to the user. mplayer, although command line, has nice GUIs available to make it look/feel like WMP.
