It either shows y or not set. But I have set a lot of modules as M, for that matter the .config does not show up that RTL8139 is selected at all. Seems like whatever I select as module is neither selected as part of kernel nor in the modules. In the /lib/modules/2.4.12/kernel/drivers/net just see one module dummy.o and thats it. Infact whenever I run make modules_install, I see messages nothing to be done for modules_install as it enters various directories in the src tree. Its somewhere I'm making a blunder but cant figure it out. kernel recompilation problem

But the problem is after rebooting when I see /lib/modules/2.4.12/kernel/drivers/net/dummy.o and thats it. I dont see 8139too.o. Infact I can just see a directory net in drivers. Whereas in my old kernel /lib/modules/2.4.2-12/kernel/drivers, I can see many modules. many of those not required though. But in the new kernel modules I dont see anything other than net. Not even fs, probably that is why my windows partitions also cannot be mounted, says not supported by kernel. I guess there is some mistake I might be doing but can't figure it out. Do I ned to make any changes to /etc/modules.conf. The entry for 8139too is already there. Do I have to kmod, modprobe etc before rebooting the first time. PLease help. 815 integrated graphics problemo

Folks, I just installed RH6.2 at a friend's place. He has a 815 motherboard with on board graphics. How do configure x? mouse not responding in KDE

Hello, I have a Microsoft Intellimouse (2 buttons) which is serially connected to DOS COM1. Whenever I run KDE, the mouse does not respond but it does change its icon depending on what is positioned underneath it. For example, while on the desktop, it looks like a pointer but when xterm is running, it changes to an "I" bar. switch INIT run level at boot time

Hello, I edited the /etc/inittab file so that the INIT run level is 5 by default. When my machine starts, it boots normally upto the command line interface login prompt and then tries to start X. It is unable to do so successfully - the screen keeps flickering and sometimes shows a large X in the middle. I tried to come out of it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. None of these work. I have to invariably type Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot. I tried to boot from the PCQLinux 7.1 CD ROM and go into "linux rescue" mode but the system would hang after displaying the message "Starting anaconda...please wait". Is it possible to change the INIT run levl at boot time by passing the appropriate command to the kernel? If not, what is the solution to this problem? I cannot get any work done at all because of it! Thanks. Parul Mathur

I tried to figure out encryption algorithm but my ISP network crashed due to lightening and till date(around a month now) its not up, so i couldnt do any trial-error. If anybody is interested in reverse engineering the windows client, please tell me i can send you the windows client. >or is it still in the development stage. everything is always under development. can u say linux/windows is complete?! Mozilla Plugin for playing movie file

Hi everybody, I am using the mozilla browser for the kiosk as the browser and all the plugins are working well but the plugin for playing movie(xanim) is not working it ask for downloading when i go for downloading it gives error. All the plugin i am using are same for the netscape the same plugin for the movie in netscape is working properly. Is there any other plugin available for mozilla for playing movies. Remote X-clients in Debian

Hi, I can't get the X-server on my machine to display applications running on a remote servers. Here's what I have been doing 1. open an SSH connection to the server from my machine 2. set the display environment there so that it points to my machine 3. run "xhost +" to disable access control on my machine Inspite of that, applications on the remote machine fail to start with the message "Unable to open the display." But the same steps seem to work very well on RedHat machines. Is there something else that needs to be done on Debian? .htaccess query

hi all, i have a query regarding the .htaccess directories.. i have a account on a linux server wherein i have stored some programs in a directory which is protected by .htaccess ... now i have given access to this directory only by 1 login & password which i have already set .. now i have my other website on some other NTserver wherein i am running a ASP page with backend as XML and this xml database has a number of login & passwords stored. if any1 authenticates to this xml database on my nt server then i want him to get access to my linux server directory which is protected by .htaccess ..which means that if any1 authenticates on the asp page , he *should not* be prompted for the .htaccess password on the linux directory on my other server.. i.e. i want to pass a string along with the asp page to .htaccess along with my already set login & password to let this user access that directory without the .htaccess popup coming up.... ...huh hope u'll got it .. thanx cheers~ </shahazad> -- Get your firstname@lastname email for FREE at http://Nameplanet.com/?su

Language switchover

Is it possible to switch the keyboard from one language to another, say i am running GEdit and i want to type in French, can i make my keyboard settings to change to the one for French language. Linus Torvalds was recently interviewed by OSNews. These are his answers to some of the questions: What do you think of the FreeBSD 5 kernel and WindowsXP's new features from a clearly technical point of view? Linus Torvalds: I don't actually follow other operating systems much. I don't compete - I just worry about making Linux better than itself, not others. And quite frankly, I don't see anythign very interesting on a technical level in either. What is your opinion on Hailstorm, .Net and the rest of the technologies Microsoft is preparing to roll out in the years to come? Can these releases have an impact on Linux and if yes, in what way? Linus Torvalds: See my answer about not caring what the competition does, but doing my own thing as well as I can.. What is your opinion on RMS insisting calling Linux as GNU/Linux? Linus Torvalds: I don't mind what rms calls the system. I don't think his arguments for the naming are very valid, but hey, at the same time I really couldn't care less. How do you see the future of Linux for the next 5 or 10 years from an engineering but also a marketing eye? Linus Torvalds: I don't use a marketing eye, I simply don't care. There are others who do, I'll let them worry about it. >From a technical standpoint, I believe the kernel will be "more of the same", and that all the _really_ interesting stuff will be going on in user space. That's not to say that there aren't problems to keep us occupied in the kernel too, I just don't think they make for all that interesting reading ;) My thoughts: How often have we, as developers, built our tools based on what the competition does? How often have we measured our systems against our competitors and not as the tool itself? Linus' philosophy is basically, don't bother about what the others are doing, just make your own stuff better today than what it was yesterday. Most of us started out with that philosophy (at least I did), but somewhere down the line the marketroids got to us. Maybe it was done in school and college, maybe it was done at home. It's the whole concept of getting measuring success by money earned that tends to screw up developers. This, is possibly just one of the things that seperates hackers from the rest. -- Yeah. X crashes

X crashes very frequently on my machine(PCQ 7.1). Also sometimes when X crashes the machine hangs. I use X at 16bit 800x600 resolution on: AMD K6-2 with 128 MB ram and SiS 6326 card.
