sameer had written about a problem of getting into linux without the boot floopy i had the same problem sameer so i did this: 1.made a folder in c: and put loadlin.exe and vmlinuz into the same folder{loadloin willbe in the folder dosutils in ur CD}{vmlinuz in dosutils/autoboot} 2.made a bat file in c: with the following instructions: cd\ cd lboot loadlin c:\lboot\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 3.note: lboot was the folder i made in c: which had loadlin and vmlinuz and hda8 is the part of the hdd where i loaded RH7.1 4.the problem occured because u tried to load linux on cylinders after 1024 (pls try this at ur own risk, it did wrk for me) Namit. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? JunkBuster asking for chkconfig

Hi all, Yesterday I downloaded junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm and tried to install it using $ rpm -Uvh junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm The command returned failed dependancies asking for chkconfig However chkconfig is already installed on my system .. $ whereis chkconfig chkconfig /sbin/chkconfig No man page is available for chkconfig .. Size , RSS in top

Hi, Can anyone explain me the significance of Sice Vs RSS as reported by top and program performance ? I did a man top, but I am still confused. I have java and C programs running on my RH 6.2 box. One of the C programs shows RSS as 35M and size as 36664 Another instance shows RSS as 660 and size as 36500. Both are the same executable, but one instance is writing large chunks of data to a socket. Do I need to be concerned if RSS increases ? Or should I just care about size ? Thanks Shahed

We HIGHLY recommend you make a recover boot floppy when prompted, otherwise you may not be able to reboot into RHL. The error report was: warning : device 0x0309 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit Fatal sector39745412 too large for linear mode ( try 'lba32' instead) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does it mean? How can I get rid of this? I created a boot floppy after this when prompted but, when I try to boot from floppy it gives the message: SYSLINUX 1.52 2001-02-07 Boot failed Now I'm not able to boot into the linux in any way. Hi, I have 2 boxes with me. One is running windows 2000 pro and other is running Red Hat linux 7.1... I have setup a network between them.. the linux machine has to NICs, eth0 [ internal network ] and eth1 [ cable connection ].... when i ping my windows box from linux, i get good responds... but when i ping my linux box from windows, i get a time out error... my routing tables are correct.... both the systems have the same subnet masks... anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem? Kunal

hi, I am using Debian (testing) on a kernel 2.4.7, and compiled modules for sound card support .... but I can't get it to work. Three problems that I encounter: 1. no sound 2. aumix complains that mixer support is not compiled into the kernel, but there was no mixer support for the 1371. 3. whenever I move the mouse, I hear a distinct buzzing sound from the speakers. Pine is not shipped with Debian. KDE & netscape + [OT]Restart Problem

Hello people I have a problem running netscape on kde it gives a segmentation error - core dumped message and exits the queer thing is that it works perfectly with gnome running so how do i solve this problem ? secondly i have started having an [OT] hardware problem every time i restart my computer my keyboard and mouse stop functioning and the computer hangs if windows is default in lilo and the if linux is default in lilo then redhat kudzu the hardware detecting tool starts and offers a list of keyboards to choose from i have to go with the default in lilo as pressing keys has no effect except the capslock, numlock and scrolllock buttons blinking together. also the keyboard is detected as otherwise a "keyboard not detected" error would be given by my bios thanks Aarjav __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? We don't need no dependencies

The dependency stuff in Linux is really frustrating . I mean when I download some new software and try to install it , it shows some dependency problems. To give you an example recently I downloaded a a mail client called mahogany which had 2 dependencies. Now I downloaded the reqd package to solve it. To my surprise that package had 5 unsolved dependencies ! I gave up the idea thinking that I would be running around in circles. I had same nightmarish experience when I tried to upgrade rpm 3 to rpm 4 Is there some distribution available which gets over this problem ? Linux is so well organized in other ways then why this irrational dependency thing . Why can't developers make standalone software ?

I just exorcised windoze from my comp. Now, Dad uses the comp for mail and browsing. So, I'd like to have luggers suggestions, about which mailer/browser to suggest to my Dad. Some obvious options are Evolution, Balsa, Kmail, Kconq, Mozilla, Opera. I'd choose a Evolution/Opera combo. What do you say?? Mounting NTFS partition

Dear Linuxers, While mounting NTFS partition, mount replied NTFS module not installed in kernel. Is there any way I can mount it without re-compiling the kernel. I heard there are some third-party drivers for mounting NTFS partitions. Do you know any?
